Chapter Text
And God said “Let there be Light.”
But what separates God from his creation? What separates the art from the artist? If God created the universe, then who created God?
He’s yet to answer these questions, because for as long as the universe has existed Lucifer has yet to meet his creator. Created from nothingness, born into the void and left to his own devices.
Light.
The Morningstar.
That’s what everyone misunderstood; there was nothing else in the beginning. Just him, the proverbial Light of God, all alone amidst the emptiness of infinity. No matter how many times he called out, an answer was never received. A lonely child, he knew of nothing except a desire to create, to not be lonely anymore.
He pulled apart the very fabric of reality to create Night and Day, Water and Fire, Earth and Air. He pulled up the firmament from the deepest waters to create the very land that creatures have walked on for millions of years.
And God looked upon his creation and saw it was good…
But he was still lonely, and thus created again. This time, his siblings. Equal to him in power, together they brought life upon the Earth, from the smallest bacteria to the first man and woman. From that point, Lucifer and the Archangels went their separate ways. His siblings treated Adam and Lilith as pets, animals trapped inside the Garden of Eden like it was a gilded cage. He had blessed them with free will, so he couldn’t understand why they would withhold it from humanity.
So many times Adam and Lilith looked beyond the Garden with curiosity, only to be met with reprimands from the Archangels for asking questions. Lucifer wanted to bless them with infinite knowledge, to let them know the depths of the universe from whence they came, but when he brought it up he was quickly shut down by the other angels.
“You’re not God,” Michael said to cut down his ideas.
Was he not? He was the first being, after all. Existing alone for millennia before bringing his siblings into existence. Maybe giving the other angels power equal to him was his first failure, never thinking that his own creation would betray him. Maybe he was naive?
Unhappy with their choice, he plucked an apple from a tree and blessed it with knowledge. A gift to humanity. Unfortunately, it came with an unforeseen price; for now there was discord between man and woman. With infinite knowledge, Lilith no longer wished to be confined by the Garden, far less pleased with her metaphorical leash than Adam. She wanted to explore the world beyond. Disobedient, the Archangels banished her from the cage that she’d been trapped in.
And for Lucifer’s audacity to override his siblings’ decision, he was banished from the very Heavens that he created. But even with all their power, they could not take away his.
So, once again, he created. This time, from Darkness instead of Light. He brought forth a new realm for himself and his new love, and left the first one behind…
If the painting can also paint, then what separates it from the painter? If God’s creation can create, then who is truly God?
He still hasn’t found an answer to this question, but it doesn’t really matter anymore. He kisses Charlie’s forehead before putting her in her crib for the night. He doesn’t need to be God, because now he can be Dad…
