There was an Alien Invasion.
The kind of thing that happened in movies, windows smashed, cars abandoned, literal hero's zipping about, fighting the grotesque beings. Peter honestly couldn't believe it, he'd come into the office early, he and Neal were working on a case to catch an individual behind a series of sculpture thefts and forgeries, a slippery someone who was stealing real pieces of art, forging them and then having the fake (posing as a real) be miraculously found. It was unnerving how the man, or woman, was slipping their net so much that they couldn't even get a lock on the criminal's gender. Neal was oddly unhelpful with the case for a change, no assistance in finding whoever the mysterious J was.
That didn't matter anymore though, because hello, Aliens.
"You have to let me out!" Neal bit out, looking uncomfortable in the office with a handful of agents who had barricaded themselves in. Peter, Diana and Jones were among them, the former having dragged Neal in when everything went to shit. Now there was ten of them, a cabinet dragged against the door and then leant against by two of the more bulky agents.
"Neal, I know it's scary but we're safer sticking together and out of the way. We'll just be causing trouble if we need the hero's to stop fighting to save us." Diana explained carefully, mistaking Neal's antsy behaviour as fear.
"I need to get out." Neal echoed as Shazam flew past the window, chasing down two of the fleeing flighted beings, the windows rattling.
"Neal, have you seen it out there?" Peter asked patiently. Neal looked pained, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Yes, that's exactly why I need to get out. I need to help." Neal stressed.
"Neal you're not a meta, are you?" Jones asked cautiously, a couple of agents perking up hope that perhaps they had a more efficient bodyguard among them.
"No?" Neal seemed confused and shook his head but still looked on edge, one foot tapping softly on the ground.
"Then I don't see how you could help, Neal." Jones finished bluntly. Peter was quick to nod in agreement.
"The fighting is best left to those with powers like Superman and Wonder Woman." Diana chimed in and Neal frowned.
"Not every hero has powers." He countered, "a hero isn't measured by their ability to do the impossible, only by their ability to do good." Neal argued and Peter honestly was a little surprised, he hadn't expected Neal to be any semblance of protective over hero's. And that sentence sounded like something out of a ted talk. Very unNeal…
"No offensive Caffrey, I think Superman would destroy you in a fight." One of the agents against the door, Agent Knox hollered from his place.
"I'd pay to see that." The other against the door, Agent Bardsley chimed in and earned a couple of snickers and hums of agreement. Neal pulled on odd face, almost close to hiding laughter at the comments. Peter couldn't understand the joke.
"You're staying in here, Neal, that's final, I can't risk letting you loose in an Alien Invasion of all things." Peter countered, stance firmly set and not budging for anything except-
It was that exact moment, perhaps fate even, that one of the beings smashed through the window, sparking shouts of distress and shock from the room's occupants. Peter's hand went to his gun instantly, as did Knox and Jones, weapons raised and firing instantly.
The bullets did nothing except make the beast angrier, giving an ear piercing snarl, clawed hands swiping at Knox and Bardsley, the later getting caught by the sharp talons while Knox dodged. Bardsley dropped instantly, hands desperately clutching at their shredded stomach.
Peter cursed, as the creature was joined by another who hurled themselves through the shattered window.
The agents had all shuffled up to the walls to get as far away as possible, Knox and another agent were down by Bardsley's side in an attempt to slow the bleeding.
Peter scanned for Neal, finding him still in the centre of the room, gaze locked with one of the monsters.
"Neal." Peter hissed quietly, trying to get the attention of his CI.
"Neal, back up slowly." Jones uttered under his breath, attempting to edge forward but forced back when the other creature turned to snarl at him threateningly.
Diana made a noise of distress, fearful of the outcome for their CI while Peter debated rushing forward and taking the brunt of the attention to spare Neal. Neal however didn't seem fazed, breaking eye contact from the beast to scan his surroundings, he moved first. Peter and Jones both let out exclamations or noises of shock as Neal turned and in one solid movement launched the stapler at the one eyed creature, hitting the first dead in its eye with terrifying accuracy. The creature gave a pained wail, eye scrunched shut and hunching over. The other was unsurprisingly angered by the motion and turned to charge at Neal.
"Neal, look out!" Peter yelled but Neal ignored him, waiting until the last minute to then vault back onto the desk and then up, clinging onto the ceiling fan, dropping down to sit on what was vaguely the monster equivalent of shoulders, thighs either side of the alien's eye and freakishly wide mouth. One punch, two, and then a third to the beasts eye also had the second creature hiss in pain, clawed arms waving frantically and without aim. Neal seemed to practically weave and wave through the limbs was though he was water, none of the swipes coming close to hitting the CI.
"Neal!" Jones shouted in warning as he first creature finally blinked away its clouded vision and charged again at Neal. Neal, while still squeezing his thighs around the monster, didn't even turn, one of his hands reaching into his jacket to throw two… Throwing stars? At the beast. Both hit their mark, dead in the centre of the Alien's eye, some sort of black thick sludge seeping from the cuts.
"What the fuck." Knox whispered silently, Bardsley's wound stabilised for now, the other agents watching in concern.
The first creature was blinded and furious. Neal finally threw himself back, vaulting off the second creature with a flexible twist, throwing his weight against the blinded creature. The creature stumbled, a step back, two, three, four and Neal pushed back from it, solid kick to one leg and the beast fell backwards out of the smashed window, the height surely would kill it. The second was dealt with in a similar such fashion, a series of thrown objects Jones had caught a better glimpse of and could 100% say there were shaped like a Bat, and the office was suddenly free once more of threat.
"What the fuck?" Knox asked again, his words filling the silence amidst the shrieks and thuds and general such apocalypse happenings.
"I said I needed to get out and help." Neal retorted quietly, smoothing down his ruffled suit and straightening the tie he'd worn today.
"Did anyone else see that or did we all have a collective hallucination?" One of the other agents asked and Jones nodded.
"We must have."
"Neal what was that?" Peter asked hesitantly.
"What ever do you mean?" Neal asked, head tilting in confusion.
"Uh, everything that just happened."
"Are you Batman?" Jones asked, because those had been Batarangs. Without a doubt.
"Of course not."
"Bats, we need you ASAP-" The distorted voice hissed through Neal's jacket. Without flinching, Neal reaching into the inner pocket, pulled out a Justice League communicator and-
"ETA 3 minutes." Neal replied gruffly.
"Need a lift, honey?" A different voice chimed, more human sounding.
"Yes please, boy scout, thank you." And with that, Neal shot a smile at the rest of the Agents.
"Of course I'm not Batman." Neal spoke, and then jumped out of the window.
He missed the splutters of shock and confusion after Clark caught him mid-air.
