Truth was, life was boring. Kakashi couldn’t say his relationship with Gai had ended with a bang or a whimper or even ended at all. Hell, he wasn’t even sure it had ever properly started. Try as he might to fit this puzzle into an Icha Icha Romance narrative, all his mind could piece together was this: the story of a childhood friendship growing into something messy under their circumstances and then wasting away in their twenties, gradually crushed under the weight of their inadequacies.
Kakashi returns from the Land of the Waves, exhausted and triggered.
Meanwhile, Gai is satisfied with how his team is doing.
They both sign their kids up for the chuunin exams, and find themselves interacting again after months of awkward distance.
The events that unfurl take them, and their relationship, to an even rockier place.Kakagai-centric retelling of Naruto from after the Land of Waves to right before Shippuden.

Life was a complicated mess. Kakashi had thought things had been complicated two years ago, but now Kakashi would laugh at the Kakashi of two years ago for his naïve thoughts. How innocent that Kakashi had been. He had no idea what had been due to come. That Kakashi had three terror students (or had, two of them were being trained by Sannin now). That Kakashi had also bonded to a man with a swirly mask known as Mr. Kidnapper (named by Kakashi) who was secretly an Uchiha. Said Mr. Kidnapper had also gotten him pregnant and they now had a two year old daughter, all while Naruto was due to return to Konoha.
So yes, Kakashi wished life would calm down, but that wouldn't happen. Not with the Akatsuki on the move (hunting Naruto), and Orochimaru (hunting Sasuke).
Kakashi swore he needed a holiday.
Kakashi would also love to find out Mr. Kidnapper's identity too. That would be nice.

His eyes crack open to a blurry mess of a world. Everything swims, and the pain in his head seems to have narrowed, shooting through his eye but deep and back and fuck it hurts to think. Overwhelming nausea follows.
That small voice dissolves into the quiet, choking hiccups of someone trying to hide their tears.
Her hair is bright, bubble gum pink. It hurts to look at. She looks real.

His name is Hatake Kakashi. He is a jounin of Konahagakure no Sato. He doesn’t feel like that’s true. Something is very wrong with him.
He is thirty-five years old, a university student for the second time, hardly attached to his country, let alone his town, and he was a teenager when he last properly watched Naruto. Waking up as the traumatised goofy teacher guy must be some kind of joke.

Guilt and happiness warred within Sakura. She was nothing beside him. Rock Lee was too kind and pure for their harsh ninja world, and Sakura needed him to realise it. Despite her efforts at self-reform, she knew she could never truly deserve Lee. She would die before the day ever came.
Sakura leant towards him, placing a firm hand on his shoulder.

Which obviously causes enough chaos that Kakashi wants to now single handedly make things right in a reality which is a lot more messed up than his. But hey, at least in this one, all his genin have their limbs attached to their bodies and his dead teammates being alive is just a minor inconvenience.
