Summary
Last year, in the Fourth of July's sweltering summer heat, Joseph Kavinsky tried to take his own life.
He succeeded for only a few minutes, but survived, his loyal dogs dutifully saving the life he didn't want. Hospitals and rehab were an awful way to come back into the realm of the living and the sobriety didn't stick. Kavinsky drops out of high school, aimless and miserable, trying to regain control of the dream forest that now has him branded for what he is-a dream thief. What's worse, he's begun pouring black, tarry liquid from his fucking face anytime he doesn't dream for too long. Trying to hide his supernatural ails and struggling to keep the pieces of his life together enough not to burden his friends, a voice begins to come to him in his sleep, promising a better world for dreamers like him. Movement with freedom. No more nightwash. A world that was shaped for things like him.
The pack graduates from Aglionby and go to begin their lives of college and adulthood, and Kavinsky is left alone to his own devices. Sick of the excuse of a life he's been living, he gives in to the wills of the mysterious dreamer sharing his nights, and discovers he is, for better or worse, much less alone than he believed.

Hennessy settled a hand atop his on the gear shift. Softly, she said, “Ronan. That is such bullshit.”or: ronan plans his wedding, breaks a bad habit, and goes to confession.

“Bloodsucker.” He greeted, leaning one elbow against the bar and crowding into Adam’s space as much as was possible when there was a long wooden slab between them, “How’s it going?”
Adam couldn’t stop the look of disgust from crawling onto his face, but he quickly tamped it down into an apathetic expression, “What do you want?”
“No warm welcome?” The man mocked.
“For you?” Adam responded? “Not likely.”
“Seems like everything worked out well for you.” The man rapped his knuckles against the bar and looked Adam up and down in a slow movement, “All things considered.”
If Adam could blush, he would have.
The first time Adam had seen this man, he hadn’t thought much about him, a little bit too panicked at that moment. But now that he was right in front of him, looming into his space, Adam realised that he was really quite attractive, which was infuriating. He hated it when mean people were attractive, because it always seemed like such a waste.

The betrayal he was feeling must have been written on his face, because Ronan crossed his arms. “If you wanted me to tell him something else, you should have told me.”
“You wouldn’t have lied to him.”
Ronan shrugged. “Probably not, but I could have not picked up his call.”
“That would be cruel of you considering the fright you gave all of us last fall.”
“Tsk, there’s just no winning with you.”
“So, what did he say?”
“Now you want me to reveal Parrish’s private confidence?”
“Can I just say I find it ludicrous that you still call your ex boyfriend by his last name?”
“You call him by it sometimes too.”

Most of the time, Adam appeared perfectly normal. He was friendly and very polite, if a bit reserved with everyone but Ronan. He clearly liked Matthew, and was wary of Declan, which were not unusual reactions to the brothers. Matthew studiously took notes on these casual interactions.
But over time, Matthew began to realize there was a lot more to Adam than met the eye.
