He felt his palms begin to sweat as he kneaded and gripped at the fabric of his shorts, faded by the sun and beginning to wear thin. His vision began to fade at the edges, darkening while everything else began to brighten. The distant sounds of the hospital faded outside the examination room they were in, sounding as though he was underwater. Drowning.
“Did you hear me, Itadori?”
Doctor Shoko’s voice came, slicing through. Despite her usual vacant expression being ever present, he could see the crease of her eyebrows, concerned. She was worried. He didn’t want her to worry.
Letting out a hesitant and somewhat awkward laugh, he reached up, smiling, rubbing the back of his neck. It felt cold.
“Hah, jeez! That wasn’t what I wanted to hear!”
