Early on in their journey, Silver contracts an illness that puts his brain and, consequently, the Urca’s schedule and Flint’s whole plan in jeopardy. When Flint is forced by circumstances to confront his strange fascination with their crew’s new incompetent cook, they develop an unlikely relationship that changes the course of Flint’s war and, inadvertently, his life and heart.
For all of Silver’s scheming, for all his careful balancing acts, it was Flint’s heavy-handed moves that had brought him to this fragile brink. And Flint, whether out of arrogance or ignorance, hadn’t seen it coming.
But Silver had. And he wasn’t going to let it stand.

However, an unfortunate series of events causes both Jim and Kate to receive detention to be carried out during the Fall Break. The first day of their punishment's tasks sets them aboard the Navy's newest innovation in shipbuilding, the Centurion, the fastest, sturdiest ship ever built, a prize which a new pirate rising to prominence calling herself the Moray would love to steal for herself and wreak havoc across the Terran Empire.
