Thin pianist fingers trail along the wooden paneling, pausing at doorways and hallways. A head tilt, a holding of breath, tight in the chest, until it all whooshes out in a quiet huff. Nobody around.
Nobody was awake at this time. Upstairs and downstairs, you could hear a pin drop. His hearing had always been extraordinary. Doctors had confirmed it was an unusually strong sense of his.
That came in handy, at times like these.
He walks down the hall. A pause, a quick shuffle of feet, repeat- until the cool night air hits your face and the starlit nightingale song lulls you to peace. Usually, Arthur would stop and listen. 'Stop and smell the roses,' if you will. But the press of a worn, leather-bound book to Arthur's chest meant there would be no stopping tonight.

A fourteen-year old boy, blind since birth, vanishes in the middle of the day. Panic erupts, barely concealed under whispers of secrecy. Head Matron, Marie Pilon, heads to a childhood friend and gets recommended to talk with a consulting detective and his somehow not-boyfriend-but-still-kinda-boyfriend podcaster.
The game is, of course, afoot.

Arthur walks these ten steps with a confidence that had grown tremendously since he and John had bought this apartment, and had secured itself once he'd been able to do it about two weeks ago without stumbling or having to trace his fingers over the almost sickly pale (as John had described it) wall.

Well, it feels like he’s lost somehow. Lost what? John doesn’t know. But it feels like by going into that building and spending his evenings there, he’s somehow failed.
or John is a broke techie, so he takes a job at the local high school, helping in the sound booth and teaching students more about it. Arthur Lester is a single dad whose daughter is in her last year of high school, and her theater department needs a new pianist for their fall musical.
High school drama occurs, there is no budget to fix anything, and somewhere along the way, John and Arthur find each other. -

A gasp broke through still air, followed by coughing, sputtering, and some frankly over-dramatized wheezing.
Arthur! You’re awake! Are you okay? What happened!? Where-!?
“Jesus, John,” a break for more coughing, “I- I don’t know, okay? My head feels fuzzy, I can't- I can't think.”
His arm and John's angled behind them to prop up his torso. Had he sat down? He must’ve at some point. Or he’d fallen again. Actually, on second thought, it was almost definitely falling.
What do you mean fuzzy? Like you hit your head or-?
“No! No I-,” he shook his head, then the nothing of his vision began to swim and he quickly reevaluated, “Well, maybe actually. But no, I mean my thoughts. Everything’s coming through a bit jumbled, just give me a moment.”
He sat there for a minute or two.
"Where are we, John?"
We’re at the edge of a dark forest.
The man sighed, "Again?"
TLDR:
They're in Dracula now.

It's dark in his and John's bedroom, and if it wasn't for the fact that it's the middle of the night, and he can hear John snoring, and he knows by that logic the room is supposed to be dark, he would have figured it out either way.
So he imagines his current position if it were existing in a vacuum. There's nothing before, nothing after. The room is dark. He can only tell from the lack of any light.
