Out there on the balcony, the faint glow of the cigarette illuminating his fingertips, he instead looks like a man in atonement. For what, Angel isn’t sure. Aki exhales through his nose like a muted laugh. “Didn’t realize you paid that close of attention.”
“I don’t.” A lie.
Aki stares at him for a moment. Takes a slow drag. “I’m not miserable,” he says quietly. “I just…” he trails off.
Angel waits. The insects sing. Aki sighs.
“Do you ever think that maybe you’re just… not meant for the things you want?”--------
