Summary
Booker and everybody else were cursed in a very big way and bound to quite a few things. Bound to die at twenty-five years old. Bound to be in a zombified state of how they first died that kept their bodies mutating over the years.
Bound to never speak out loud again, which also tied into the way that they were bound to know the worst things that would befall humanity and who was doomed to join them next.
That’s why when the opportunity crops up to try and make a five year old Nile Freeman’s life as normal and happy as it could be, they take it, even if means at least twenty years of doing anything she needs and running to the grocery store when her mom or dad needs another jug of milk or whatever they need for the new Jewish or Halal recipes they’re very sweetly trying to make.
Booker can just sit on any fucking mystical connection he may or may not feel with Nile the older and older she gets and shut the hell up, because he’s also fully on board with trying to ensure Nile eventually dies a peaceful death caused by old age.
It’s a pity she doesn’t really go along with it once she connects the dots.

Summary
When Booker was seven, Sundays meant playing pretend with Nile in the synagogue basement while their moms worked. Twenty years later, Booker receives a letter from a country he’s never heard of claiming that the ketubah he wrote in magic marker that one time he played pretend wedding with Nile requires his presence forthwith, so he can begin courting the heir to the throne. Booker insists it’s all an elaborate prank right up until his arrival on the lush Caribbean Isle of Nok. Instead of mischief afoot, it is an ancient fey magic, and Booker now faces the very real possibility of being married to a gorgeous soon-to-be queen.
Regardless of what anybody else thinks, Nile and Booker must figure out how to reconnect and decide if they think they have a future together on Nok.
Or, rom-com fantasy tropes crash landed into an exploration of intergenerational trauma, oppression, and liberation.

Throughout her years, even before her first death, she’s made a habit of cataloging the exact distance she was from her hometown of Chicago.
