Obviously, they had a third rule. But it didn't need reiterating: Margo and Eliot came first. They were a unit.
They keep their habit of seducing first year Brakebills boys to presented Betas and Alphas and outside of their own dynamic the duo don't really have friends.
When first-year Quentin Coldwater shows up all doe-eyed, Eliot is surprised when he worms his way under his skin and Margo can barely admit that she can't get him out of her head. Quentin is mostly oblivious, as usual.
What happens when Margo and Eliot get to know Quentin while waiting for him to present?
The duo wasn't looking for a regular, let alone a committed third, at least as far as Margo knew.
What happens when Quentin finally presents? Far later than most magical adepts, in the middle of the cottage sitting room?

The bathroom door is shut when Eliot reaches it, but oddly the sound of the shower can be heard from the hall. Already this is curious, but as he approaches to study the wards the fall of water is broken, suddenly, by a gasp.
Now the soundproofing must be slipping. Cocking his head, personal boundaries momentarily forgotten, he catches another moan through the door and this second voice becomes recognizable. So it is either faulty wards, or Quentin's heat can't be contained. That seems just as likely for a while, but Eliot admits to himself that his judgment may be clouded by how thrilling he finds Q’s particularly vocal responses to be. He can recognize when dick has distorted his reality. He’s mature enough to notice that sort of thing.
