They'd never broached the topic of kids. Dean knew parenthood was a tender spot for Cas that was better left unprodded. Dean, well he was getting old. He'd been a father figure to enough kids throughout the years that he could field an entire baseball field. He had more than he could have ever guessed was in the cards for him, and he wasn't in the business of asking for more, so if that was all, that was enough for him. Anything with Cas would be enough. But when Sam had called late one night and asked them if they could take in a young girl whose parents had been killed by the shifter he'd been hunting down, he and Cas hadn't hesitated to agree.

Against all odds, Dean gets Cas back. They leave the hunting life, move out of the bunker to an old run down farm house in the country, try to figure out what a post-Chuck life holds for them. They never thought a couple of wayward kids would figure into that equation, but here they are now.Series

What does John see when he looks at Cas?
Cas doesn’t look like a monster.
But neither does Dean.
John stands, slow. He holds out a hand. Calloused like Dean’s hands are calloused. Scarred the same way that Dean’s hands are scarred. There’s the smell of him in the air too. Earthy and dark, slightly sour around the edges. The room feels suddenly choked with it. Claustrophobic.
Cas probably smells like the fabric softener they buy in bulk at Costco, but so does Dean so he can’t tell.
John says, toneless, “I hear you’ve been driving my car.”

aka Love Conquers All: The Final Cut
Cas's love for Dean ends up getting him out of The Empty much to The Shadow's chagrin. Unfortunately, he's now stuck in the interdimensional fabric of the cosmos where even Jack can't see him. With Cas MIA for a year, Dean's had time to hit rock bottom and climb up out of it again.
When Dean's soul plays beacon to Cas, leading him back home, it will take some doing to get them good and reunited.
There's also the matter of the love nuke Cas accidentally set off in The Empty. But that's Jack's problem.

Injured after the hell rescue goes wrong, Dean ends up disabled and living in a small rural town in Eastern Washington. With Sam fucked off to god knows where and without the fight to distract him, Dean has nothing left to focus on but his burgeoning sobriety, and persistent dreams of hell.
Set in the arid low-lands of the river valley, surrounded by apple orchards and twisting irrigation canals, Dean becomes convinced he can see a great beast stalking through the hills bordering the town. The same beast he has dreamt of since returning from hell, the same one he can sometimes feel beside him when he knows that he’s alone.
Walking the line between grief and reality, isolation and community, Dean has to pull together what's real and what isn't as he adjust to his disability, and finds faith that he is capable of building lasting relationships and creating a life for himself worth loving.
Also eventually Cas shows up, and they save the world.

Dean's just looking for safety; relief from the oppressive weight of his depression when he stumbles across a kind and genuine college student who just doesn't want to feel lonely anymore.
Sam wants more than the complicated relationship he has with his brother, but after years of abuse and misunderstandings he's afraid that he and Dean will never be able to move past the things that tore them apart in the first place.
Gabe wasn't trying to make things difficult for Castiel, but unfortunately Cas has the worst taste in men and in his defense, Dean is nothing like what Gabe was picturing.Series

Cas has been back from the Empty for less than twelve hours.
Dean is still trying to remember how to breathe.
Almost a year after Castiel is taken by the Empty, Dean Winchester pulls him right back out again, like scruffing a grumpy old cat who's on his eighth life out of nine.
With no apocalypse on the horizon and with a deathbed love confession still hanging heavy in the air between them, Dean suggests his go-to idea: that they take off together and drive around the backroads of flyover country until they figure it out.

But after some reflection, he feels he owes it to his old friend Sam to show up to his engagement party and explain that leaving Lawrence had nothing to do with Sam, and everything to do with Sam's cocky older brother who broke Castiel's heart. Maybe it’s the harp solos from that sample track; maybe Dean’s nervous that this is his last shot and if this guy can’t save Dean from filling out the back end of his contract with “Best Of” and “Live In Concert” compilations he might as well walk into the fucking sea.
