“Apparently, and you’re going to love this,” Tom began gently, “The moon is going to appear purple. They aren’t sure if it’s a one-night-only event, but either way the moon is going to be shifting in color from that golden white to lilac…”
So a purple moon. Interesting.
“Sounds thrilling. Do they know why it’s purple?” Pete asked, popping the candy into his mouth, savoring the familiarity with a soft exhale.
Tom shrugged, “So far? No one can tell why exactly, but…” He hesitated and reached for his glasses, pushing them back up where they belonged.
“Something about Spectroscopy readings…wavelengths of light regarding the moon coming back with purple tints, I went to college for Engineering, not astronomy love.”
Pete nodded slowly, taking it all in, “Great, so we get a spooky moon one night in October, cool. I’m sure it’ll be beautiful to see,” He responded and popped a second Reese's into his mouth.

“Per tradition, first piece goes to the birthday boy…” And with every ounce of care he could muster, Bradley carefully placed the piece in the lid of the container and slid it across the grass to the base of the stone.
Bradley sniffled again, “Sorry, it’s the dry kind…again, didn’t have time to make one at home…but at least it’s Rum cake, right?”
No response. But that was to be expected, Bradley supposed.
Bradley carefully tore off a second piece and gently handed it off to Pete, who didn’t say much but rather nodded his thanks.
And then it was his turn. Bradley carefully tore off a piece of cake for himself and shifted his position ever so slightly.
For just a second, Bradley wasn’t sure what to say, but felt like he should say something.
“Happy birthday, Jake…here’s to the first of many we’re going to spend like this until we can spend your birthday together again,” He raised the piece ever so slightly, and for some strange reason, Pete did too.

Indeed, there was a small craft low at her one o’ clock, faint and almost unnoticeable in its white paint. Weird. Possible intelligence craft. Maybe aggressive. But usually enemy craft weren’t that small, or that pale. “Sea Raptor to Control, I have eyes on the craft. One bogey, 10 miles and closing. Is it one of ours?” Still no response. “I’m going to check it out.”

It might not be as easy as she thinks though when the sweetest man keeps smiling at her and volunteering himself to be her little grunt to help with her experiments.
