He stared up at his roommate, eyes wide. The two of them had been fighting about something or other for nearly ten minutes by now- about what, he couldn’t remember. It had been something stupid, probably. It always started that way, then ended with hurt feelings and words uttered that should have been left unsaid.
His roommate glared down at him. Then Kaveh laughed.
It was a hysterical, disbelieving laugh like Alhaitham had just cracked the funniest joke he had ever heard. He practically doubled over as tears began streaming down his face. But it wasn’t funny. They both knew it. A million feelings began stabbing themselves into Kaveh, his chest beginning to ache with the need for air. But he didn’t stop his crazed laughter until he was desperate for breath. He finally inhaled, opening his eyes to meet the gaze of the man who stood above him. He nearly started laughing again when he saw an almost fearful expression in the eyes of Alhaitham.
“You know what?” A slow grin spread across his face, equally if not more hysterical than his laughter. “Maybe you’re right.”

The second Kayla and Austin’s names leave his mouth, Will’s face shuts down entirely. His jaw tightens, and his eyes drop to the ground as hands twist through the dying grass, close to ripping out a patch. And yet, the son of Apollo remains silent.
In any other instance he’d double back and apologize, really anything to bring a little something back to Will’s face. But he doesn’t. He can’t. The anger inside him is too hot, too suffocating. The same anger that had burned through him years ago the night Bianca said goodbye, and again when he learned what her final sacrifice had cost.
It circles his lungs, choking him out, and he knows that he can’t survive watching someone he cares about slip through his fingers again. Not again. Not him.
“Gods, you need to think, Will. It’s not fair!” he shouts, the ground below them trembling in time with his pounding heart. The decay spreads faster and faster, nearing the tree line, but he’s too focused on Will. “And if you keep going like this, you’re going to kill yourself—”
“Good.”
