Tears fell down in front of their knees, staining their cheeks and clothes they always took the time to make sure looked good. They didn’t care about that now. Far ahead of them was Ena. She was walking with her back turned to Mizuki, their cries seeming to not reach her. Was she ignoring them? The thought of it made their tears flow harder. Their chest ached, as if their heart, which was fragile enough, was smashing into pieces right inside of them. Their worst fear was happening. She hates me now. I know it. I shouldn’t have told her. As Mizuki reached their hand out after Ena, their vision would go dark, and they would awaken in their bed again.

I was headed back to the train station with Ena when I found myself standing in a dead-end street.
“Uh…” I looked down at the maps app I had open on my phone, up to the road, and then back down again. It was definitely telling me to go this way, and I was pretty sure it was right—after all, I’d just passed through here a few days ago—but no matter how many times I looked away, the road in front of me remained firmly blocked off.
My first thought was that they must have started construction here or something, but I immediately dismissed the idea. There were no workers, no machines, not even a fluorescent sign to indicate there was road work ahead. In fact, the street didn’t even continue forward like I remembered, but stopped short at a patchy field grass that seemed to stretch behind the nearby houses. Past it was a thick cluster of trees and bushes, overgrown enough to completely block the way forward, and beyond that, I could make out the backsides of a few decrepit buildings.
“Sorry, Ena, we must’ve taken the wrong turn—” I began, turning to her, but she wasn’t there. “Wait, Ena?”
There was no response.
