Desperate to know who still thinks he's Hogwarts Most Ravishing bachelor (surely everyone?), he finds a spell in The Quibbler that allegedly shows how people feel about you using a series of helpful symbols floating above their heads. Hearts for love, stars for admiration, that sort of thing.
(He should've known not to trust a magazine that also featured an article on "Training Your Bowtruckle to Fetch Your Slippers," but in his defence, he was going through a crisis.)
