“Are you well, Shufu?” Lan Xichen asks, all gentle concern.
“Mn. I have had a meeting with the rest of the elders.” Best to get it over with, he thinks.
“Yes, I was informed they called a council. What guidance will they offer?”
Lan Qiren allows himself one more indulgent moment of distraction with a sip of his tea, whose quality demands a moment of appreciation. After that, though, there’s no other way to avoid what must be done.
“They — we — must ask our Sect Leader to thoughtfully consider the issue of a marriage from which a Sect heir may be produced.”
Lan Xichen goes very, very still, and Lan Qiren’s heart aches for him.
“…Marriage.”
“You are of marriageable age, Xichen,” Lan Qiren reminds his nephew. “It is not an unreasonable concern. You must have an heir.”
