Chapter 1: On Carbonated Drinks
Chapter Text
William Wei hauls himself over the wall, careful not to jostle the cups in his hands. So far so good. Until it’s not good. Until a random voice suddenly says, “Sneaking in after curfew is forbidden in the Misty Peaks.”
William Wei nearly tilts sideways and goes crashing to the ground, which. Is not ideal. He manages to regain his balance and, though he’s startled, he turns to the side and finds himself faced with a man dressed head-to-toe in white. Oh. Hm. A Lan of some kind, then, and he doesn’t seem happy. Well then. “I just went to get some sparkling water! They say the Aunt’s Awakening has the best sparkling water in the world! Promise not to say anything and I’ll give you a jar.”
The man’s scowl intensifies. “Carbonated beverages are forbidden in the Misty Peaks.”
“…what?” No sparkling water? How will William Wei survive? “Come on, can’t you help a guy out?”
The Lan’s face darkens. “No.” And then he lunges. Just like that.
William Wei leans sharply backward, eyes wide, and finds himself suddenly drawn into a fight for his right to drink sparkling water. And, well, he can’t lose, can he? That would mean his midnight run would be pointless!
It really is unfair—this guy is just as good as he is! And fighting with cups in his hand is hard, which means that he spills more water than he intended.
He ends up going back to the dormitories empty-handed, practically feeling the Lan’s glare on him from all the way on the other side of the Misty Peaks.
This really is the worst.

Chapter Text
William Wei has heard of one of the most prestigious and virtuous teachers in the Misty Peaks—Chiron Lan. Everyone in the wizarding world knows of the three characteristics that are used to describe him: stilted, stubborn, and strict. Very strict. Chiron had a reputation as being one of those teachers who made outstanding students out of even the most bratty of people. Everyone who entered his classroom came out at least much more decent in expression and etiquette.
Huffing, William exclaimed, “Don’t I seem decent enough to you? I don’t think I need some fancy schooling.”
John Cheng responded with the confidence of an oracle, “You’re going to be one of the lowest points of Mr. Lan’s teaching career, I know it.”
In their year, apart from the Cheng Group, there were members from other groups who were sent to study at the Misty Peaks because of its reputation for high education, everyone was around fifteen or sixteen here. Since the groups knew each other – not by that much, though – everyone knew each other’s face. So with that, it was widely known that even though William Wei wasn’t born into the Cheng Group, he was the group’s star member.
But let’s forget about it for now. It only took a few seconds for everyone present in the Misty Peaks to start intermingling with one another.
A group member walked up to William and struck up a conversation with him, “I bet Lily Pad Lake over in the Cloud of Dreams is waayyyy much better than here, am I right?”
William laughed, “Fun is only where the party’s at! Though there are a lot less rules there, not to mention we don’t need to wake up so early.”
For context, members of the Lan Group went to bed at a healthy time of nine in the evening and woke up as early as five in the morning to get ready for their day and have a hearty breakfast. Someone else asked John Cheng, “When do you guys wake up then? What do you normally do?”
John spoke up with a humph, “Him? He wakes up at nine a.m. and doesn’t sleep until one in the morning.”
“He doesn’t even practice his magic or swordsmanship,” he started listing things out with his fingers, “he goes bird hunting, boating, swimming, flirting his way around-”
William quickly cut John off so he couldn’t reveal any more of his life, “That’s because I can perform magic and use my sword in my sleep! Of course I have enough time for stuff like that!”
One of their younger peers spoke out in a high and breaking voice, “Next year I’m differently going to Lily Pad Lake! Nothing’s gonna stop me!”
Someone quickly responded to him, sass clearly in their voice, “We wouldn’t need to do anything, your brother will just do all the work.”
The young man drooped in demeanor. He was the second son of the main Nathan family line: Judas Nathan. His half-brother was renown in the wizarding world as already being a fierce leader and fighter at a young age. He cared very deeply for Judas’ grades; so much, in fact, Judas would gladly run and hide from him, despite how strong their brotherly bond was.
William laughed it off, “Gotta be honest, Aunt’s Awakening is a fun place too!”
Judas spoke wearily, “Will-bro, listen. The Misty Peaks are literally nothing like Lily Pad Lake. While we’re staying here, there’s someone we need to stay away from, like, you shouldn’t even look at them!”
William tilted his head, “Who? Chiron?”
Judas shook his head, “Not that old coot. You need to look out for this total teacher’s pet, Walter Lan!”
“...Walter Lan… Walter Lan…” William scratched his head for a moment, “Wait! That Walter Lan????”
Walter Lan was the youngest son of the Lan Group’s leader, who is respectfully titled The Green Ginger™️. Both Walter and his brother were already labeled prodigies at the young age of fourteen, deemed a perfect example for their peers to compare themselves to. They were so well known, one would be a fool not to recognize their names.
Judas exasperated, “Noo, I’m talking about his brother- Of course I’m talking about Walter! Hnnnng, he’s like some prudish grandpa was given eternal youth as a teen. He’s like his uncle but worse, way worse!”
William was silent for a moment before exclaiming a small ’oh’, “Isn’t he the angry one?”
“Gotta be more specific,” John said in a deadpan tone.
William said, “Straight faced, he doesn’t really say much and he looks like he’s, uh, pretty sad I guess?”
“That’s him!” Judas said with certainty, “But he’s been in isolation for a few days, and you came yesterday; when did you see him?”
“Yesterday night.”
“Oh, yesterday night… Yesterday night!?” John blinked in surprise.
Judas quickly began speaking in a panicked tone, “There’s a curfew here in the Misty Peaks! Where did you meet him?!”
“Why don’t I know about this?” John added in.
“You don’t need to know everything about my life,” William said before he pointed to the top of a tall wall, “It happened up there.”
The others were staring at the wall with gaping mouths. John clenched his teeth, “We just showed up here and you already started messing around! What is wrong with you!?”
William grinned, “Nothing’s wrong at all! When we were passing by there this cute little shop called ‘King’s Grin’! Last night I was so curious about what they sold, I couldn’t sleep at all! So I went down into the city and visited- and guess what they had!”
The others were silent, but William kept going, “They had Aunt’s Awakening’s famous sparkling water! King’s Grin was a water bar! Filled to the brim with some of the best sparkling waters I’ve ever seen! So I bought some! Before you start talking: we don’t normally have the chance to drink this over at the Cloud of Dreams!”
“Then… where’s the water?” John raised his eyebrow.
“Ugh, Walter found me and I ended up spilling it all, such money wasted!” William said with remorse that was only for the spilled water.
Judas remarked with an awed voice, “Will-bro, you really have that kind of luck! Walter probably got out of his isolation and went on a night patrol. Then he ran into you!”
John suddenly spoke up, “Isn’t there some dumb rule about people leaving at night not being allowed to come back into the Misty Peaks until seven in the morning? How come he let you in?”
William shrugged, “He didn’t really… let me in. He just found me on the roof and started spouting rules until he suddenly started fighting me!”
“...You had to have provoked him, I just know it, what did you do?”
“I did noothing, all I did was tell him that I went off to get some sparkling water, I even offered him some!”
John’s eyebrow was raised higher and so was his temper, “Stuff like sparkling water is banned here, idiot.”
William responded, “He told me the same thing! At least a little nicer than you, though.”
“Didn’t he start fighting you?” John asked.
“He did! He was so rude about it too!” William quickly changed his tone, “Just attacking me out of nowhere without even letting me say my peace!”
Everyone around them started murmuring, complaining about all the outlandish rules of the Misty Peaks and the behavior of its residents.
“W-wait, you’re saying Walter Lan just started fighting you?” Judas blurted out, and to which William nodded. Judas continued, “You are so doomed, Will-bro. Walter isn’t the type to attack first, talk second; he probably has it in big time for you! Be! Careful! Walter is the detention monitor here in Misty Peaks!”
William waved his hand, “Psh, haters gonna hate. I don’t think I need to be scared of some egghead. If he’s such a prodigy, how come he needed to get out of isolation instead of continuing to hone his magic? It’d be a waste of his time to come after me, I-…”
Before he could finish his sentence while everyone was walking into class, they saw a boy sitting upright in the classroom who emitted an icy aura. The boy swept a cold glance at them.
Immediately, everyone shut up. They entered the classroom, quickly picking seats that were a good distance away from Walter Lan.
