Story Title: Of Wolves and Rabbits
Rating: T
Genre: Friendship/Romance
Summary: Amber was a free spirited kid from the city who always got herself into trouble. Razor was a boy from the forest who lacked human interaction. When one of Amber's misdeeds land her in Wolvendom, a chance meeting begins to arise. Both of them knew that wolves ate rabbits. This story in particular, might be a little different.
Chance Meeting
The warm sun shone down from Mondstadt. Winds flowing on the chill breeze. People lounge and smile in comfort as they give thanks to their lord Barbatos.
However, that doesn't seem to be the case for the Outriders.
In a small office room, sat an old man puffing the cigarette in his mouth in peace. A stack of papers from the Grand Master had been enlisted to him and seemed to never dwindle in numbers. In all his years as an Outrider, the paperwork has always been his least favorite aspect of the job. Sign this, report that, and make sure the numbers of resources used were appropriate. He sighed. It was going to be a long day.
"Sir! We've got a problem!" A lanky man burst open his door. Seems like this day wasn't going to be as tedious as he thought. "It's about your granddaughter, she—"
"Let me guess, she sneaked into the towers to get more bird eggs? Managed to burn something on accident? Or maybe, she poisoned the Outriders with her top notch cooking?" He chuckled. Amber had always been a troublemaker despite not intending to do half of the offenses she did over the course of growing up. But even if she did all that, she'll always be his beautiful granddaughter. Even if she burned the little hair he had on his balding head.
"No sir, even worse. She ran out the gates trying to run from one of the guards."
His eyes shot wide open. "What!? Do you have any idea where she is right now?!"
"We've asked the guards and several people in the area. We sent some of our peers to Windrise to check, but nothing came up. We've asked the citizens in Springvale, the people said that they saw her run to either Wolvendom or the Dawn Winery."
The old man got up from his chair, putting out the cigar in a nearby ashtray. The paperwork could wait, Amber rushing out of the gates had priority. "Gather up more men for a search party! Bring them to Wolvendom and the winery. Tell the ones being sent to Wolvendom to get their weapons in case of an attack."
The outrider saluted him before going. If she were to run to the winery, then at least she'd be safe under Diluc's hands. But had she wandered out to Wolvendom, then those beasts better be prepared to take the full length of his wrath.
She ran and ran until her legs nearly gave out. Almost tripping on the rocky terrain and nearly hitting trees.
She messed up big time. It doesn't matter if her grandpa saves her again or not, she broke the record of Teyvat's biggest screwup in history! Either way, she's going to be done for once they get her!
Slowing down to a halt, Amber finally took the time to gather herself. Her huffs filled the air as her eyes scanned the terrain. Where the heck was she anyways? There was just trees and trees everywhere. This can't be Whispering Woods, she'd known that place by heart by the countless times her grandpa took her there for a trip.
"Weird..." Was the vibe the forest gave out. Nothing more, nothing less.
A crack came from her feet; getting a yelp out of her. She paused and saw a small broken branch lying underneath her feet. That was a bit embarrassing. "Glad nobody's here to see that."
Another sound came into her ears, surprising her once again. Only this time, the sound was not something that came from her or her actions. "Is anyone there?"
She took another step back. Scanning her surroundings, she saw the bushes around her shivering in wild anger. She swore she saw red flashing eyes in one of them. Out from the darkness came silhouettes covered in black shadow. Vicious energy radiating from all of them; all concentrated at her.
Her heart sank as the sun revealed them in their truest forms.
Wolves.
She heard plenty of stories about wolves. Most of them included them either having a war with or eating people. She gulped as the wolves begin to grow both in size and in numbers. Only a couple of seconds passed before she was ultimately surrounded by all of them.
"H-Hello. I'm A-Amber. Nice to m-meet you..." Maybe being nice to them would work...?
They did not share the same sentiments as her. All of them stared at Amber with their rabid-like gaze. Hungry. Powerful. Hateful.
She was going to be killed.
"N-No..." A breathy whimper escaped her mouth. But she wasn't going to back down. Even if she was really scared and her knees were shivering, she wouldn't let a couple of wolves scare her! She grabbed the nearest stick she could find and pointed them at the beasts. "B-Back off! Bad boys! BAD!"
They must've taken her threat as a challenge. Since not only were they not phased in the slightest, she somehow managed to anger them even more. There was no way she could fight and no way she could outrun any of these. If she could hold on long enough, then maybe her grandpa—
Her eyes widened. Amber didn't know where she was. She had no combat experience of any sort apart from the self training she did alone at night. Her legs were too small and she knew that wolves travel faster than the winds themselves. There was no way out of whatever she got herself in. Even if her grandpa did come to rescue her, the wolves would've probably already eaten her up.
The reality finally caught up with her. She had no chance.
Amber dropped the useless stick she had. She dropped down to her knees. Finally, she dropped all the fear and the tears she hid in her eyes. She wailed to the skies. She didn't know how much Barbatos can hear of her. All she hoped was that it's enough for him to hear her anguish.
"I'm sorry..." Amber sniffed. "Mom, dad, gramps. I promise I won't do anything bad ever again! I'll be a good girl from now on!"
So please...
Save me.
The growls grew larger and larger. She closed her eyes and braced herself. She only wished for it to not hurt.
But as she braced herself, the growls lowered down. Slowly until the fearsome sounds were no more. Instead, the shuffling of feet perked her ears instead. Amber glimpsed. A boy was standing in front of her. He looked about her age. But why wasn't he scared? Both of them were surrounded by wolves! But then she realized. The wolves surrounding both of them didn't look angry. No, they don't even look as hostile like they were earlier. Alert, but not with the intent to eat her.
Who exactly is he?
He wore torn leather clothes, some even too big for someone his size. His short silver hair shined against the faint sunlight. His eyes – despite being red – held no sense of danger nor malice in them; just curiosity. For some odd reason, he looks like one of those dogs she'd see near the plaza of Mondstadt. He wasn't wearing any shoes and he had several small wounds running through his face and body.
She wiped her eyes; using one of her arms to push herself up.
"J-Just who are you?"
The boy did not respond. Eyeing her in silence before starting to sniff the air. His face went in all directions, but eventually landed on her. Whatever he's smelling, it's definitely her. Wait. Does that mean he was a cannibal or something?!
Before she could even mouth a response, he took hold of her hand and smelled her with fervent energy. In her surprise, she took her hand and instinctively slapped him. "What's wrong with you?!"
Both his and her eyes widened in shock. The boy's eyes no longer held the curiosity it once had, being replaced by disbelief and anger. The same went for all the wolves around them. Her left hand covered her mouth. "I'm really sorry. I didn't mean it! It was on accident! Are you okay?"
He growled. All the wolves around them growled in unison. We're they connected to him or something?!
She's done it. She's really done for. She needed to appeal to him, quick. Taking one of her gloves out, she gave it to him. "L-Look, you wanted to smell me right?! Here! Take this!"
He glared at her. Not surprising considering what she just did. But his hands were slowly getting to her glove. He gripped it and sniffed the glove. It must've been enough, since he didn't look as mad anymore.
"You're really easy to please, huh?" Her words went unheard as he continued to smell the glove she gave. "Why are you even here?"
"Amber!"
"Huh?!"
A flaming arrow fell right in between the boy and her. Panic ensures as the wolves turn their attention away from her in search for whoever had shot the arrow. A group of humans nearing them garnered their attention and all had started to run away. Even the wolf boy.
"W-Wait!" She called out; extending her arm. He stopped and stared at her. The look of betrayal remained in his face before he ran away into the forest. "I'm sorry..."
"Amber!" Urgency was evident in the familiar voice approaching her. Rash footsteps came closer and closer. The usual warmth of her grandpa's arms showed itself. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you anywhere?"
Amber's eyes fell to the floor. "No..."
He sighed; pushing her head up against his chest. "Good. Good..." His eyes stared into hers; making her feel worse than she already did. "What were you thinking going outside the gates?! I told you many times not to go out, remember?"
"Yeah..."
"You even landed yourself in Wolvendom of all places too. The gates were one thing but you could've gotten hurt, young lady!"
She just wanted to become a slime and melt away. "Sorry, gramps..."
"I know you are, little runt." He smiled, "But don't you ever go to this place again. Do you hear me?"
Her lips refused to answer. Normally, she'd say yes. But one variable was keeping her from doing so.
"Hey grandpa, do you know any boy that lives around here?"
"...No and you're grounded."
That very same day, Amber closed herself inside her room. Partially because she was grounded for going outside Mond. But that was fine.
Nighttime had come and Amber's attention turned into the stars. She always found them beautiful. They compliment well with the winds of the city. Reaching an arm into the skies; slowly closing in her fingers. As if she was carefully catching the stars and not wanting to let them get away from her grip. Opening her hands again, she let out a sigh after seeing nothing manifest in her palm.
"Maybe if I can learn how to glide, I can reach the stars up there quicker." Amber giggled to herself.
Her mind wandered from the stars to the incident earlier in the afternoon. That wolf boy was weird. She noticed that he wasn't being attacked by the wolves either, despite being a human like her. Who was he anyways? What does he do? Why is he with those dangerous wolves in Wolvendom?
More questions presented themselves, but no answers came into mind.
"Maybe I can try and see him again. But if I do that, I'll probably get eaten on the spot. Not to mention mom and dad would ground me even more."
He looked real mad when her grandpa came to the rescue. Did he have anything against humans? If so, then why didn't he immediately chow her down right then and there? He just smelled her hand like a weirdo. Chances are, maybe he is a weirdo. Weird boy living in the forest with a bunch of weird wolves? Definitely a weirdo.
Now that she thinks about it, why did he smell her?
She never remembered putting any perfume on. Perfumes smelled bad to be honest. She took a shower before she left, so her being smelly was definitely out of the question. Hmm. What was the last thing she ate before she left the gates? Maybe that was the reason and he just wanted a taste of the food she'd eaten. Can't be it, he'd smell her belly if he wanted some of her food. Wait, does it work that way?
"My head's starting to hurt..." She yawned. Amber stepped away from the window and into her bed. Whatever, it's not like she'll see him ever again. Not when she was basically on provision for the next week or so.
A final thought slipped into her consciousness before closing her eyes.
Who is he?
Running into the forest, the wolf boy huffed in exhaustion. The humans had seen them once again, he couldn't let them get closer to his lupical. Not after what happened last time a group of them approached their forest.
Back at the base, the wolves gathered around in a circle. They had gone hunting in groups and his group was the only one that did not bring as much food on the table. Actually, they bought nothing to the table. He had that girl's finger clothes which he liked the smell of. He still kept it.
The wolves began to chastise his group. Some were rightfully mad, others disappointed, and few barking menacingly. He himself did not know if the specific barks meant anything, but through sheer instinct he can understand what they are currently feeling.
It was a rough day.
After being sent to do another hunting session, nightfall has taken over the bright yellow sun in the skies. The boy sighs; looking up into the shining night stars. While he himself had no understanding of what these unreachable objects in the skies were, he knew that the beauty of them captured his attention. So beautiful. So near. So small.
Everything was calm. He feels relaxed. He feels sleepy.
But his sleep would come another time.
One of the wolves on guard growled; alerting everyone including himself. From afar, the sound of feet were heard. It was a man. His lupical surrounded him yet again. Since he couldn't fight against any enemy, he was always made sure to be protected by them. The man got closer to them. They growled, they barked, but this man was not scared of his lupical.
"Good evening everyone. The night stars are beautiful today, don't you think?" He couldn't understand any of the sounds that came from his mouth. But he did not seem afraid. Even with the wolves' threats. "I heard from a silly little girl in Mondstadt that there was this little boy you guys were around with. Care to show me to him?"
His lupical was still alert, but they let him through. He was tall; he was scary. His hand reached into his clothes. The wolves were alert with the man's moves. He got something from a little box.
It was something orange. It was cooked. It smelled delicious.
The man dropped to his knees. He offered the orange thing he had. "Here ya go, buddy. Didn't want to bring meat with me so I got myself a hashbrown. Hope ya like it!"
He still did not understand what those sounds meant. He took the offering and bit into it. It was delicious. Very delicious. It tasted nothing like the meals the wolves would give him nor did it taste like the fruits he would gather from the wild. Just within seconds, the food in his hands were no more. He stared into the man's eyes. Hoping to see if he had more in his container. He just laughed at him.
"Sorry kiddo, only bought one to convince you. Seems like that was enough." He held out his hand. Both Razor and the wolves were confused by the gesture. None of the humans they've encountered in the past have ever done it before. "Say...How 'bout you come down to Mondstadt with me? I can get you more food and a little friend right around your age."
The man looked at the glove the boy had on his hand.
"Oh would you look at that, she already gave you a gift."
And that's it for the first chapter.
This was a premise I've been holding back on for a while now. Actually, it's been months now that I think about it. But now it's here! Man, I'm excited to make this one.
I ain't spilling but I got some solid ideas on how this story will flow. And when I say that I mean I'm just thinking up of something on the spot with no outlines at all. But don't worry, for I am a professional non-professional in the writing industry. I can make this work.
Anyways, much love to you all. Hope you enjoy the upcoming chapters.
That's all for now and I will see you next time.
