Work Text:
“Penny loafer fashion moment!” Inga squeals as she snaps a picture of her and Nancy’s matching shoes.
After Inga had expressed her newfound appreciation for Nancy’s sense of style, Nancy had agreed to take her out thrifting to help her expand her wardrobe.
“Gosh, is this top not totes adorbs? I bet it would look fab on you, Nance.” Inga holds out a cropped vest to her.
Nancy hesitantly takes the vest, then has an idea.
“Inga, why don’t I dress you in my style while you dress me in yours?”
“Oh em gee I totally love that! I’m going to pick the most rockin’ outfit you’ve ever seen.” Inga immediately rushes over to the store’s skirt aisle while Nancy examines a rack of dresses.
It had been a few weeks since the girls had become actual good friends after initially getting off on the wrong foot. Nancy hadn’t had too many friends like Inga back in River Heights. She was usually too busy solving mysteries for shopping and partying. If anyone had wanted to get close to her they were the ones who would need to put effort into it.
Nancy had been content focusing on her work, but now with Inga things were different. Nancy wished she had more experience with friendships so she would know how to act on shopping trips like these, how to talk the way Inga did, and how to reciprocate her enthusiasm. Most of all Nancy wondered why Inga was so important to her, even compared to the other new friends she had made in California.
Nancy settled on a dress that was Inga’s size and went to find a sweater to match it.
She looked around to see Inga rooting around in the accessories. She was full of such determination and passion, that’s what drew Nancy to her. Their personalities were similar in that way, they just expressed themselves through very different outlets.
Nancy chose a belt and headband to complete the outfit, then met up with Inga outside the changing rooms.
“There’s already someone in this room who has been HOGGING IT FOREVER” Inga complains, loud enough for whoever was inside to hear and ignore, “So I guess we’ll just have to share the other one.”
Nancy felt a small blush on her cheeks “Oh, are you sure?”
“Of course, plus it’ll be easier that way for me to show you exactly how the outfit goes.” Inga gestures to the overwhelming pile of clothes in her arms, then ushers Nancy into the small room.
The girls exchange their chosen outfits and begin changing. Nancy tugs on a denim skirt under a slightly large t-shirt.
“No, no, the shirt needs to be tucked into the skirt. Here let me help.”
Inga reaches out and touches Nancy’s hips. Nancy feels a bit overwhelmed as her friend has changed out of her clothes, but has yet to change into the ones Nancy chose for her. Inga undoes the skirt and tucks the shirt in before refastening it. She lingers for a moment.
“I should help you with the vest too. Your nails look pretty cute today, I wouldn’t want you to chip your polish.”
Inga steps closer to Nancy, and Nancy watches her fingers do up the buttons along her waist. She glances up at the taller girl; Inga meets her gaze. Nancy leans up and kisses her.
Nancy pulls back, face flushed.
“I’m sorry- I mean I shouldn’t have done that I-”
“It’s okay, Nance. If you weren’t going to do it, I was.”
Nancy looks back at her friend and the two giggle.
“Come on, put on the bomber jacket then return the favor by helping me get dressed.”
Nancy threw on the jacket as Inga slipped into the dress Nancy chose for her.
“Zip me up?”
Nancy pulled up the zipper and fastened the button at the top. Inga turned around and gave her a kiss.
“Returning the favor” she winked.
The two girls finished accessorizing and looked at themselves in the mirror.
“You look totally fab, Nance.”
“You’re positively beautiful, Inga.”
Inga took out her phone and snapped a pic of them together in the mirror.
“Nancy and Inga fashion moment!”
