Chapter 1: Lena's Secret
Chapter Text
‘This day was supposed to be a routine yearly checkup.’ Lena kept repeating in her mind as she sat on the uncomfortable bed in a gown waiting for her OB to return. Lena hated yearly check ups but she always made sure she never missed an appointment when it came to her OBGYN appointments.
. Lena felt like she was waiting in that room for an hour when her doctor came back and sat in front of Lena sadly “Miss. Luthor, I found some unusual issues when it came to your exam. Which is the reason why I proceeded to do a pelvic exam after the routine test.”
Lena looked at the doctor and nodded “I assume that is why I’m back just a few days later. Well, what did you find? You don’t have to sugarcoat things for me.”
The obgyn sighed “Lena, I’m sorry but your pelvic exam resulted in my finding out that you have endometriosis. Endometriosis, is”
Lena put her hand up to stop her doctor “Endometriosis is when the endometrium tissue, which is the tissue that usually lines the inside of a woman’s uterus, grows outside it. I’ve studied it before so what is the damage that it’s done?”
The obgyn sighed and looked to Lena “Lena, Your endometriosis is so severe, that the damage has most likely made you infertile and by the looks of the scar tissue you will never be able to conceive and give birth to your own biological children, I’m so sorry. We can try removing the tissue and trying Intrauterine Insemination for you if you choose to try to have children. There are options we can approach if you feel like you ever want to try giving birth.”
Lena looked to her doctor as hot tears filled her eyes “I’m only twenty-three.”
The ob nodded “I know and Lena, I’m really sorry. You can get ready and head out, if you choose to have the surgery to remove the tissue and you want to give IUI a go, just call back and make an appointment, if not, I’ll see you next year.”
Lena just nodded as the Obgyn left her room and then Lena got dressed and went back to her house so that she could be alone, while she was there she cried and then turned off all of her electronics. She didn’t want to talk to anyone at that moment. She just wanted to be alone
Present Day
About a year after that doctor’s appointment, Lena had moved to National City to get a fresh start, she had been named the CEO of LuthorCorp which she had soon renamed LCorp. While in National City Lena met and fell in love with Alex Danvers. They had been together for well over a year and now the words “You may never be able to conceive and give birth to biological children” had been replaying over and over again when she was alone in her thoughts. At twenty-three, the infertility hadn’t really bothered her like it had been bothering her recently.
A few weeks ago Alex had mentioned someday wanting to start a family and Lena immediately began to draw away from her girlfriend. She knew Alex wanted a family and it made her feel awful that She wouldn’t be able to provide that for Alex. Granted she knew Alex would willingly carry kids for them but she wanted to be some sort of help. Lena hadn’t told Alex about her fertility problems however, tonight was going to be the night that she told her. Lena had already prepared herself for Alex to leave her just as Jack had left her when she told him what had happened.
Lena had called her work day early so that she could prepare homemade chicken pot pies for dinner. Lena had no doubt that Alex would suspect that something was up when she got home to a home cooked meal along with a homemade guinness chocolate cake.
Alex arrived home just as Lena was taking the Chicken Pot pies out of the oven.. Lena had just finished icing the cake when the oven timer went off. She grabbed her oven mitts and then pulled the Chicken pot pies out of the over and sat them on the stove. Lena smiled when Alex walked up and wrapped her arms around her “It smells wonderful babe.” Alex said as she kissed Lena’s cheek “You have out done yourself. I was expecting to get home and order some take out and watch movies.”
Lena smiled, “We can still watch movies after we eat dinner.” Alex nodded and then joined Lena at the dinner table
Once they had finished dinner and had sat down to watch a movie and eat some cake Lena turned to Alex “I need to tell you something, I’ve hardly told anyone about what I’m going to tell you about.”
Alex could see the pain in Lena’s eyes “Honey, what’s bothering you?” She immediately wrapped her arms around Lena. “You know you can tell me anything.”
Lena nodded and then she took Alex’s hands for what she feared was going to be the last time. “I know you want a family and I feel like I need to put this out in the open before we continue to move forward.”
Alex squeezed Lena’s hands and looked into the blue-green eyes that she loved so much. “It’s okay if you don’t want a family Lena, we don’t have to have a family immediately.”
Lena felt tears fill her eyes “No, I want a family Alex, it’s just that right before I moved to National City five years ago I was diagnosed with a severe case of endometriosis. My doctor ran a lot of tests on me after my diagnosis and determined that the endometriosis had likely made me infertile. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get pregnant.” Lena felt tears rolling down her face “I want to have a family but Alex, I’m terrified that I’m hindering you because I can't get pregnant.”
Alex immediately pulled Lena into her arms and began to stroke her back “Lee, It doesn’t bother me that you can’t get pregnant. If we want children I can always carry or we can take the steps to help you to be able to carry a baby. We can even adopt a child Lena, I love you and that isn’t going to change because you have endometriosis. We are in this fight together Lena.” Alex held onto Lena as she began to cry. “Lena, I’m not leaving you, if somebody left you because of problems outside of your control, they weren’t worth having your love.”
Lena held onto Alex and nodded “I love you too.” Lena didn’t want to talk much more about it, instead she just cuddled up against Alex and nodded “He wasn’t” she said softly as she looked up to Alex.
Alex kissed Lena and then turned on a movie and pulled Lena as close to her as she possibly could and held her through the movie. About half way through the movie, Alex noticed that Lena had fallen asleep so she lifted her girlfriend up and carried her to the bedroom laying her in the bed before she went and locked all of the doors and put away the leftovers before she turned off all the lights and then crawled into the bed and pulled Lena into her arms and then she went to sleep holding Lena to reassure her girlfriend.
The Next Day
Kelly only recently began working with Social services and was looking at some files when she found the file on a young four year old girl named Esme, she had been tasked with updating the file and as soon as she seen Esme and how she acted it instantly reminded her of Lena so she ran the DNA since there was nothing in her file. The only DNA match in the System was a familial match to Alexander Luthor so Kelly immediately called Alex. If Kelly’s instinct was right, this three year old girl who was living in a terrible group home was Lena’s daughter. So Kelly called Alex and immediately asked “Can you and Lena meet me at the tower? This is an emergency.”
Alex nodded and pulled Lena into her arms “Kelly, we are already at the tower, me, Lena and Kara. We’ve been doing research. We will stay here for a bit.”
Kelly gathered her things and went to the tower, she secured the DNA results and the picture of the girl and then went to the Tower, she immediately walked to Lena and Alex.
Alex looked at Kelly “Is everything okay?”
Kelly looked at the couple “Since what happened with Orlando and Joey I’ve been trying to get the children from Miss. Hoschild’s home into new placements, but where I’m the new case worker I wasn’t very familiar with all the children so I looked through their files and on a little three year old girl, all they were able to tell me was that she was half Daxamite and Half human. So I ran her DNA through the system and I found a familial match to Lex, but it’s not paternity. Lex is the girl's uncle.”
Lena looked at Kelly in a state of shock “I didn’t think it was possible..” She grabbed the file from Kelly and opened it to see the picture and immediately Lena knew that this little girl was hers “Rhea…I didn’t think she had the chance..”
Alex looked at Lena “Honey? What do you mean?”
Lena wiped away the tears that were falling “When she took Mon-El and I, she took pieces of our hair because they had some type of technology that allowed her to create an embryo from locks of hair, I didn’t think she was going to have the time to create an embryo, but look at her, Alex she has my eyes.” Lena said softly as she looked at the picture.
Kelly looked at Lena confused as she saw the look in Lena’s eyes “You didn’t know about Esme?”
Lena looked at Kelly “No, I didn’t. Rhea must have created her and implanted her in a surrogate..”
Alex could see the pain in Lena’s eyes so she pulled her closer. “You want her to come home.” Lena nodded and Alex looked at Kelly “What can we do to get custody of her?”
Kelly looked at Alex “Where Lena never signed papers because she didn’t know about her. They should be able to reinstate her parental rights after a home visit. I’ll get an emergency home visit ready and an emergency hearing started. Give me a couple of days.”
Lena and Alex nodded “Keep us updated.” Lena stated before gathering her things and waiting on Alex so they could go back to the penthouse so that they could prepare the guest room to become a room for Esme.
Chapter 2: Welcome Home, Esme
Chapter Text
It had been a week since the discovery of Esme’s DNA and the request for an emergency hearing had been filed; however the first emergency hearing had been denied because Lena had not filed the appropriate parental rights reinstatement petition. A few days before the second hearing had been scheduled Lena had met with Kelly and filled out the necessary paperwork requesting that her parental rights be reinstated. After leaving the meeting that day, Lena and Alex had returned to the penthouse and prepared Esme’s room. The couple turned their guest room into a room fit for a four year old, the room included a gorgeous twin size canopy bed with white furniture. A closet full of clothing, the dresser and chest full of clothing as well. Lena had even brought in a construction team to build a little window reading nook with two bookshelves full of a wide variety of books. Some Irish Fairy Tales, some of the books Lena had brought with her when she moved into her father’s house, including the Storybook that her mother used to read to her at night. Along with many other books. The room was painted white with little accents of purple scattered through the room which matched Esme’s bedding perfectly. Above Esme’s bed but below the top of the Canopy, was Esme in Wooden letters painted in all shades of purple to match her room perfectly.
Now, 4 days later, Lena and Alex finally received the call that they had been waiting for, the judge had approved an emergency placement due to a video which CPS had anonymously received of the poor treatment of the children living with Miss. Hochschild. Child Protective Services revoked Miss. Hochschild’s foster parent license and now they were working endlessly to find homes for the children that had been living in the home. Esme was the only child who had a biological parent that was still alive and on earth. The judge had been apprehensive but ultimately listened to Kelly’s recommendation and placed Esme in the custody of Lena Luthor and Alexandra Danvers then she had set up a court date to reinstate Lena’s parental rights and to allow for an adoption to take place. Lena and Alex had just finished their lunch when they heard a gentle knock on the door.
Lena stood up and took a deep cleansing breath. She couldn’t believe she was finally bringing her daughter home. “They are here. Are you ready?” Lena had chosen a casual look for today. Lena had put on jeans and a purple blouse, and had left her hair in her natural wave. She wanted Esme to feel at home.
Alex stood up from the table and straightened her blue blouse and dusted off her jeans she then smiled and kissed the side of Lena’s head “I’m ready. Are you ready?” Lena nodded and then took Alex’s hand and walked to the door and opened it.
Kelly felt Esme tighten the grip on her hand when the door opened so Kelly bent down and got eye level with Esme “Esme, these are my friends Lena and Alex. They have been so excited to meet you.”
When Lena laid her eyes on Esme she instantly felt her heart fill with a Love that she could only imagine is how a mother feels when the doctor’s lay their newborn baby on their chest. She blinked back the water in her eyes and then bent down to Esme’s level when Kelly stood up “Hi Esme, it’s really nice to finally meet you. I’ve been waiting to meet you for a very long time. This is my girlfriend, her name is Alex.” Lena motioned back to Alex as she held her hand out to the little girl “Do you want to come inside?”
Esme took Lena’s hand and smiled “It’s nice to meet you! May I come inside?”
Lena smiled standing up and then she felt her heart pang with guilt when she saw the power dampener still on her daughter, she shot a scornful look at Kelly who held up the key to the bracelet. Lena walked Esme into the house and smiled when she spotted Esme looking at the Barbie play house that was in the corner of the living room. “You can go play with it.”
Esme smiled and scurried off to play with the dolls in the play house, it wasn’t long until Esme walked up to Alex “Will you play with me?”
Alex smiled and took the Barbie that was offered to her and then went and sat on the floor with Esme and played with her. When Alex saw that Esme had been specific about two dolls, one little Barbie girl that resembled Esme and the other was a doll that had green eyes “Esme? You really like those two dolls.”
Esme nodded looking at Alex “Yes, the little girl looks like me and the big one has green eyes like me. It makes me think of my mommy.” Esme said softly looking at Alex
Alex looked at the little girl “What do you think about when you think about your mommy?”
Esme smiled as she looked at the doll and then to Alex “I know my mommy still loves me. I can feel her sometimes especially when I am sad, I can feel my mommy. I love her Miss Alex. I know my mommy is out there looking for me. She’s gonna find me one day and she's going to take me home and we will be a family.”
Lena felt tears fill her eyes as she walked over and joined the girls “Esme, Are you mad at your mommy for not already finding you?” She said as Kelly joined them and then sat on the couch so she didn’t invade their space.
Esme handed the mommy Barbie to Lena and smiled “No, I love her very much and I can’t wait to see her. Miss Kelly said that today was a very important day for me and I think she’s right. I can feel my mommy getting closer to me and when I see mommy I’m going to give her the biggest and bestest hug.”
Kelly smiled holding the file and the key in her hand. She didn’t want to interrupt the family bonding that she was experiencing. Kelly grabbed a tissue and then dabbed at her eyes, she was so happy that she’d been able to get Esme in the custody of her mommy. She finished drying her eyes and then spoke up “Esme? Do you like being here?
Esme laid the Barbie down and smiled happily “Yes, I really like it. I want to live here.”
Lena smiled and then laid the Barbie down and lifted Esme into her lap “You do?” Lena smiled as she tucked some of Esme’s ringlet curls behind her ear. “What if I told you,I have a secret to share with you?”
Esme smiled looking at Lena “Will you share it with me?” She then took Lena’s hand in her own and smiled.
Lena smiled as she held the little girl before looking at Kelly for permission. When Kelly nodded Lena smiled “Esme, you do get to live here. Miss Kelly talked to the judge and she said that you get to live here with Alex and me.”
Esme looked at Lena and Alex and smiled “Really? I get to live here with you and Alex?”
Lena nodded and smiled. She couldn’t help but to kiss the little girl's head “Yes, you do. Would you like to go see your room?”
Esme smiled looking at Lena “Please? I’ve never had my own room.”
Alex smiled looking at Esme and Lena. “Well you get to have your own room here, come on and we will go look at it.” Alex stood up and waited for Lena and Esme to get up.
Esme smiled as she stood up and held her hands out to hold Lena and Alex’s hands. Lena stood up and took Esme’s hand after Alex had taken the other “Let's go see your room sweet pea.” Alex said as she walked to the room “Alright Esme let's go see your room.”
Kelly followed them and smiled when she watched Lena open the door up and then watched Esme run into the room and immediately go to the window reading nook. Lena stood in the doorway and watched as Esme looked at the books. Kelly looked at Lena and spoke softly “You should tell her, I think she’d really like to know that her mommy found her. I haven’t seen her this happy since I met her. The judge just has to sign the paperwork and once she sees how well Esme has taken up to you two She’ll give her to you, You two just need to fill out her paperwork to change her name.”
Alex was standing beside Lena and she nodded “Go on Lee, She deserves to know. Kelly and I are right here.”
Lena smiled looking at Kelly and Alex “You two promise you’ll stay right here?”
Kelly and Alex nodded “Yes now go tell your baby girl she doesn’t have to wait anymore to meet her mommy.” Alex said softly and kissed Lena to hopefully give her a boost of confidence.
Lena kissed Alex back quickly and then walked over to the reading nook that Esme had already climbed into with the help of her little set of stairs. Lena sat down beside Esme and smiled seeing the book that she was so familiar with “That book is pretty special to me. My mommy used to read that to me before she’d tuck me in at bedtime.”
Esme smiled looking up at Lena and crawled into her lap “Will you read it to me?” She asked as she handed Lena the book and then she got comfortable in Lena’s lap“Do you think my mommy will read to me at bedtime? I’ve never had a mommy who would read to me and tuck me in.”
Lena smiled and then looked at Esme “Yes I will read it to you” She took the book and then laid it down “First, can we talk about your mommy for a minute?”
Esme nodded looking at Lena “Yes we can.” Esme then looked into Lena’s eyes and noticed that Lena’s eyes were just as unique as her own “We have the same eyes. They are Blue and Green.”
Lena smiled and looked at the innocent girl “Yes, we do. I got them from my mommy Elizabeth. You got them from me.”
Esme was confused at the statement and she looked at Lena “But how did I get them from you?”
Lena smiled as she looked over at Alex and Kelly. Alex walked over and bent down “You know how you told us that you could feel that your mommy was close and that she was going to find you one day.”
Esme nodded “Yeah and I’m going to give her the biggest and bestest hug.”
Lena smiled tearfully as she rubbed circles on the back of Esme’s hand “Then, you should give your mommy the biggest and bestest hug.” Esme was confused as she looked at Lena. She was about to ask how and then Lena said “You're sitting in your mommy’s lap.”
Esme’s eyes widened as she looked at Lena “You’re my Mommy?” Lena nodded and immediately Esme wrapped her tiny arms around Lena’s neck “I was right, you found me.”
Lena smiled as she wrapped her arms around Esme “I did all thanks to Miss Kelly realizing it. I am so sorry I didn’t find you sooner Esme. I didn’t know about you and one day when you’re older I promise I'll tell you all about it. Esme, we are going to be a family and we are going to be together. Alex and I are never going to let anyone take you from us again.”
Kelly smiled and brought the key over to Lena and Esme “Didn’t I tell you that today was going to be a really important day for you?
Esme nodded as she cuddled to Lena “Yes, my mommy found me and we are going to be a family.”
Alex smiled walking over to Esme “Absolutely sweet pea.”
Esme then looked at Alex “Does that mean you’re going to be my mommy too Alex?”
Alex smiled and nodded “If you want me to be, You can call me momma, if not you can just call me Alex.”
Esme smiled as she looked between Alex and Lena “I think I’ll like having two mommies. I’ll have a mommy and a momma.”
Alex and Lena smiled as they each kissed Esme’s cheek and then Alex grabbed the key from Kelly “What do you say we take that bracelet off?”
Esme looked at Alex and Lena “Are you sure? I don’t wanna hurt you two.”
Lena looked to Esme “Let us take it off of you baby, you won’t hurt us I promise.” She then looked to Esme “I’ll tell you another Secret.. We are friends with Supergirl, you won’t hurt us, we will help you learn how to control your powers baby. I promise. Since you’re half human, you won’t have all of the full powers of a Daxamite, I promise momma, SuperGirl and I will help you control your powers sweetie.”
Esme nodded and then held her wrist out to Alex so she could unlock the bracelet. When the bracelet was unlocked Esme moved her wrist freely “Thank you.”
Alex got up and walked over to put the bracelet away, Kelly then followed her “I’m getting ready to leave so you three can get ready for your first night as a family but I want to leave you all with this. Everything you all need is here, the adoption form if you choose to adopt, and the name changing form, We have our next hearing in about a week, have these filled out before you three arrive to court especially, her name one. As of now I’ve transferred all of her paperwork under the name of Esme Luthor because the DNA proved she is Lena's but you two can change it.” Kelly smiled, handing Alex the file “You two have a good night, I will see you all in court next week, if not before. I’ll let myself out.” Kelly then left the penthouse feeling pleased that the family was finally together after a week of waiting.
Later that night, as Lena was bathing Esme, Esme looked up at Lena after Lena rinsed her hair “Lena?”
Lena looked to Esme and smiled “Yes baby?
Esme looked at Lena and took Lena’s hand “Thank you.”
Lena looked to Esme confused “For what baby?”
Esme played with Lena’s hand “For bringing me home after you found me.You saved me Lena.”
Lena smiled and leaned over the tub and kissed Esme’s head “Sweetheart, as soon as I found out about you last week, I knew I wanted you to come home with us. If I would have known when you were born I would have fought to get you.”
Esme smiled looking up at Lena “I know you would have.” .
Once Lena had finished giving Esme her bath, Lena helped Esme out of the tub and then wrapped Esme in a fluffy towel and then carried her to her bedroom to get Esme ready for bed. Lena dressed Esme and then kissed Esme’s head as Esme went and climbed into the nook and grabbed the book that she had been looking at earlier before handing it to Lena “Will you read to me? I’ve never been read to before.”
Lena grabbed the book and then picked Esme up off the nook and carried her over to the bed and laid her in the bed pulling the blankets up over Esme before climbing into the bed to lay next to Esme just as Lena’s mother used to do to her. Esme smiled and then laid on Lena’s chest and got comfortable so she could listen to the story. Lena read an Irish Folktale called The Enchanted Cave to Esme. About half way through the story Esme had fallen asleep laying against Lena’s Chest. When Lena noticed that her daughter was asleep, she laid the book on the bedside table and then just held Esme for a few minutes.
When Alex hadn’t seen Lena return to the living room she walked into Esme’s room and snapped a picture of what she saw before looking at Lena. Lena seemed to be struggling with something so Alex softly asked “Lena? Are you Okay?”
Lena looked up and smiled at Alex before nodding “Yes, I am. I just want her to feel safe with us.” Lena then moved Esme off of her chest and laid her down before getting out of the bed.
Alex wrapped her arm around Lena’s waist and kissed her head “I understand, I think she knows that she’s safe with us.” Alex smiled looking at the little girl in the bed in front of them “Let's tell her goodnight and then go and lay down.” Alex moved forward and kissed Esme’s head “Goodnight Sweet pea.”
Lena smiled, moving over to Esme’s bed and tucking her in and kissing her head “Goodnight sweetheart, I love you.”
Esme stirred ever so slightly “Goodnight Mommy, I love you .” she said softly before she went back to sleep.
Lena’s heart soared when she heard Esme call her Mommy in her sleep state. She wiped her eyes and then walked out of the room with Alex.
Chapter 3: We are a Family, Esme.
Chapter Text
On Saturday morning, Esme woke up bright and early and ran into Lena and Alex’s bedroom jumping on their bed “Goodmorning.” She then made herself comfortable in between the two women in the bed and smiled when they both woke up.
Alex looked over to the Alarm clock and saw that it was 7:15am and she groaned “You are just like your mommy.”
Esme giggled as she looked at Alex and then cuddled between them “That’s not so bad.” Esme curled up under the blankets looking at Alex and Lena “Can we watch cartoons in bed?”
Lena giggled as she rolled over on the bed when she felt Esme getting comfortable in the bed “Hey, at least it's not 5 am like I used to get up. Good Morning baby girl.” Lena smiled, kissing her daughter’s head. “Of course you can baby but first, What do you want for breakfast?”
Esme smiled looking at Lena and thinking for a moment before stating “Danver’s family Blueberry Pancakes.” She giggled looking at Alex “Please?”
Alex giggled sitting on the bed and tickling Esme “I fed them to you one time when Lena was at the tower early and now you’re addicted.”
Esme giggled laughing as Alex tickled her and she held her hands out to Lena.
Lena giggled and joined in on the tickle fest for a few minutes until Alex stopped tickling Esme “So you don’t want me to make breakfast? You want Alex to make it instead?”
Esme nodded “We can snuggle and watch cartoons, I snuggle with Alex a lot in the mornings.”
Lena nodded and looked at Alex “You don’t care right? I’ll make breakfast tomorrow.”
Alex smiled, getting up out of the bed and leaning over to kiss Lena “no, I don’t care, I’ll go make Blueberry Pancakes and you two can watch cartoons.” She kissed Esme and then left to go and make breakfast for their family.
Lena smiled and pulled Esme against her body as she began to rub Esme’s back “What do you want to watch baby girl?”
Esme looked at Lena and cuddled closer against her mother “Uh.. The Magic School Bus returns? Can we watch an episode about space?”
Lena smiled as she pulled up Netflix and turned on The Magic School Bus Returns kids in Space 46 minute movie as she pulled Esme closer to her and began to rub her back. “This one is new, we haven’t watched it yet.”
Esme smiled and laid her head on Lena’s chest as she began to watch the movie with Lena.
Lena held onto Esme and smiled, she loved that her precious girl had taken such an interest in science much like herself. Lena held onto the hope that Esme would never question herself when it came to believing in herself.
Once the movie was over Lena went to change her clothes into lounge clothing before lifting Esme up from the bed “I bet, the pancakes are almost done, Let's go wash out hands and go sit at the table.”
Esme nodded, kissing Lena’s cheek “Okay!”
Lena sat Esme down on the floor and then they both went into the ensuite bathroom and washed their hands after they got ready for the day. Lena and Esme then walked into the living area and immediately over to the table. Lena picked Esme up and sat her in the booster seat at the table.
Alex smiled as she placed Esme’s plate and cup in front of her “Blueberry pancakes, sausage link, and cut up strawberries with a cup of milk for our girl .” Alex then walked over to the counter and brought over her and Lena’s plates. Lena’s plate had pancakes, sausage links and a mixture of fresh fruit while Alex’s had more pancakes and sausage with just a little fruit. “I was thinking we could go to the Children’s Science Museum and have lunch in the park today? I asked Kara if she wanted to tag along but she said that Andrea is hounding her about writing another article. She said she’ll come next time though.”
Esme grabbed her fork and looked at Alex and Lena “ Do you think they will have the planets?”
Lena looked at Esme “I’m sure they will have a Solar System Exhibit, we will try to make sure that they have one so you can see them.”
Esme smiled and took a bite of her pancakes and after she swallowed the bit she looked to Lena then she looked down “I’m an alien, is that a bad thing?”
Lena took Esme’s hand and kissed her cheek “No, it’s not a bad thing, I know Miss. Hochschild tried to make it seem like a bad thing but it’s not. I know that Miss Hochschild made you think that you are always going to hurt people because of your powers but, I promise me, Alex, and Supergirl are going to help you control them.” Lena looked at Esme “You being Half- Alien isn’t a bad thing. I promise, I’m going to teach you everything you want to know. Alex, Me and Kara all know your father and we can tell you so much about him. Kara more so than we can but I can assure you, your father would love you just like we love you.” Lena smiled, “I promise, as you get older we will tell you everything you need to know.”
Esme smiled and nodded “Thank you.” She then resumed her breakfast like the normally happy child they had discovered that she was.
Lena, Alex, and Esme ate their breakfast and Esme filled Alex in on the movie that she had watched with Lena and she smiled when Alex paid attention to every word that she had said.
Once the family had finished breakfast they began their day. Even though Esme had been bathed the night before, she was sticky from the breakfast so Alex took Esme to bathe her in the bathroom they’d turned into Esme’s bathroom while Lena went and showered and got ready for their family day in the master bathroom. Since they were having a casual family day Lena decided to wear a pair of jeans with sneakers and a red casual blouse. She straightened her hair and then applied an all natural makeup look. She walked out of the bedroom and then went to get Esme’s clothing. Lena picked out a floral tunic dress with yellow striped leggings. The tunic dress had wildflower floral design on it that matched the leggings perfectly. Lena then grabbed a pair of cream sandals that Esme could play at the park in. The weather in National City was still fairly warm even though Fall was just around the corner.
Alex got Esme out of the tub and brought her to Lena in her room “I’m going to go get ready. I’ll see you two in about 30 minutes.” Alex smiled, kissing Lena and then kissing Esme’s head before going to get ready.
Lena smiled and dried off Esme, she then wrapped Esme in the towel and she pulled Esme into her lap as she sat on the nook “I’m going to dry your hair before you get dressed so your dress doesn’t get wet. How do you want your hair fixed?”
Esme smiled as she kicked her legs softly as she sat in Lena’s lap “Um? Can you pull half of it up and then put a pretty Hair Bow in it?”
Lena smiled as she put the curl cream in her daughter’s hair “Of course,” Lena then used the hair dryer on the lowest heat setting and dried Esme’s hair. Once Esme’s hair was dry Lena helped Esme get dressed and then she fixed Esme’s hair the way she wanted it “All ready for the day!” Lena smiled as she let Esme model for her “Can I take a picture of you?”
Esme giggled and nodded “Yes and then, can we take a picture together?”
Lena smiled, grabbing her cellphone and bringing up the camera “Of course.” Lena then took a few pictures of Esme and then Lena picked Esme up and took a few pictures of them in the mirror before she turned the camera around to take a few selfie pictures, One of Esme and Lena smiling, one of Lena kissing Esme’s cheek. In the last one, Esme wrapped her arms around Lena’s neck and kissed her mother’s cheek. When Lena saw the last picture she immediately made it her cell phone lock screen while making one of just Esme her cellphone wallpaper. “I love you so much Esme.”
Esme smiled and hugged Lena “I love you too.”
Alex walked into the bedroom and then she walked over to the girls, Alex was wearing a pair of skinny jeans with a white blouse accompanied by her leather jacket. “Alright, my turn to have a photo shoot with my girls.” Alex said softly as she walked over to take pictures of the three of them. In Alex’s favorite one Lena is holding Esme in the middle of the couple and Esme had her arms around both Alex and Lena. She was smiling a huge smile that Alex swore was exactly like Lena’s especially in that picture of them. “Alright, so who's ready to go to the museum?”
Esme giggled looking at Alex “I am! Let’s go!” she smiled as Lena sat her on the ground. Esme grabbed her babydoll and then held her hand out to Lena or Alex.
Alex took Esme’s hand as they approached the door, once they had all left the penthouse, Lena shut and locked the door as they went to the parking garage and they walked to the BMW-3 Series. Lena handed Alex the keys to the BMW and then she picked Esme up and she put her in the carseat and buckled her up. Lena smiled, kissing Esme’s head before she got into the passenger seat.
Alex waited until Lena was buckled up and she drove to the children’s museum. Esme smiled as she watched the DVD player that Lena had installed in the BMW. Esme held onto the baby doll and looked up front “I’ve never been to a Museum.”
Lena looked back into the seat “Well, we will always let you do the things you want to do sweetheart.”
Esme smiled “Thank you!” She then grinned as she watched the show
A little while later, the family arrived at the science museum. Alex had made sure that the children’s museum had a Space exhibit, “I double checked to make sure they had a Solar System exhibit.”
Esme kicked her little legs as they pulled into a parking system “Thank you!”
Lena smiled as she looked over at Alex “She’s going to love it.” Then Lena looked back to Esme “Baby Girl, when we go in you have to keep a hold of my hand or Alex’s hand okay?”
Esme nodded as she laid her babydoll in the seat beside of her booster seat “Okay! I promise!”
Lena got out of the car as well as Alex and then they went to the back seat and helped Esme out. Esme grabbed both Lena and Alex’s hands “Can we see the Planets first?”
Lena giggled as she locked the car “Yes, we can”
The family of three walked around the museum for several hours. They even looked at Esme’s favorite exhibits multiple times. After about their fourth time walking the space exhibit, Esme looked to Alex and Lena “I’m getting hungry.”
Lena smiled looking at Esme “Do you want to go get some food and then go to the park? We can eat and then you can play.”
Lena, Alex, and Esme finished up the trip and then they loaded into the BMW and drove to pick up Big Belly burger before going to the park. They found an unoccupied picnic area and then sat up their lunch. Esme got a kids meal with chicken nuggets and Apples with an apple juice while Lena and Alex each got burgers and fries. Once Esme was finished with her kids meal she looked at Lena “Can I go play now?”
Alex nodded looking at Esme “Yes, but make sure we can still see you Esme. We will be right here.”
Esme smiled and then she ran off to go play. “I will!” she shouted as she went towards the jungle gym.”
Lena and Alex smiled as they finished their meal on the picnic bench. “She’s so happy.” Lena said softly as she looked at Alex “She told me she loved me earlier and squeezed my neck.” Lena smiled and showed Alex the picture.
Alex smiled looking at the Image that was Lena’s lock Screen “You’re such an amazing Mom and she's starting to feel more at home with us.”
Lena smiled as she looked at the image “She’s everything I’ve ever wanted.”
Alex nodded, pulling Lena close to her “I can tell, I’ve noticed when you get up in the middle of the night just to go and watch her sleep.”
Lena smiled as she kissed Alex “ I try not to disturb you when I get up. She reminds me so much of myself when I was her age. When I was four, I remember moving in with Lionel, I was so scared and Lillian was never any help. She never made me feel like I belonged there, I want to make sure that Esme never feels that way. Lillian only ever taught me to doubt myself and I don’t want Esme to grow up doubting herself like I did.” Lena smiled softly “But Honestly, In a way I’m glad that Lillian made me doubt myself so much that I trusted Rhea. Because without trusting Rhea, we wouldn’t have Esme.” Lena took Alex’s hand “I think we should name her Esme Elizabeth-Hope Danvers-Luthor. I figured Elizabeth could be after both of our moms. I know it’s my mom’s name but Eliza is in Elizabeth.”
Alex smiled looking at Lena tearfully “Are you saying that you want me to adopt Esme?”
Lena nodded, wiping Alex’s tears “Yes, I do. We are a family and she is ours but I want her to legally be yours as well.”
Alex nodded, hugging Lena. “I would love to adopt her, Lena.”
Lena smiled and she was about to kiss Alex again when she heard a soft shaky voice call out “I want my mommy.” Lena knew the voice and she immediately pulled away from Alex.
Lena looked at Alex “Esme’s scared.” She immediately began looking for Esme and she jumped up when she couldn’t find her. “I can’t see her, Alex.”
Alex looked around and got up “We will find her.” before Alex could say another word Lena was already up and searching through the park.
Alex saw a woman who reminded her of Miss Hochschild and her heart stopped so she used the com “Lee? I think Esme’s old foster mom was here.”
Lena took a deep breath and then she heard the tiny cries of Esme hiding in the bushes “Mommy.” Esme kept saying in a shaky voice.
Lena went over to the bush and bent down “Esme, honey, Mommy is right here.” She held her arms out to Esme.
Esme was quick to get out of the bush and then she wrapped her arms around her mommy’s neck and she buried her face in Lena’s shoulder “Mommy.”
Lena rubbed Esme’s back and kissed her head as she held the tiny body in her arms “I’ve got you baby. Mommy has you.” She held onto Esme and rubbed her daughter’s back. Once Esme had calmed down a little bit Lena lifted Esme up in her arms and used her com to get in contact with Alex “I have Esme Alex, We are going back to the picnic area.” Lena walked over to the picnic area and sat down with Esme in her lap “What’s wrong sweetheart?”
Esme sniffled as she held onto Lena while Alex joined them “She found me, she told me you never wanted me, then she told me that now you're going to take me back to her house.I told her that wasn’t true. I told her that you want me and that you love me. She was wrong, wasn't she mommy?” Esme said as she held onto Lena tightly.
Lena started seeing red as she listened to her daughter “Baby, tell mommy, was it Miss Hoschchild?”
Esme nodded as she sniffled “Yes mommy.” Esme reached over and grabbed Alex’s hand when she saw that Alex had offered the hand to her.
Lena took a deep breath and looked at Esme “Will you look at Mommy?” when Esme looked up at her Lena kissed her head “Esme, it's not true. You are everything mommy has ever wanted, You and Alex are everything to mommy.” Lena was angry that this woman had tracked her daughter down and told her these lies “Esme, You are Mommy’s miracle. I wish more than anything that I had known about you. Mommy would have come and got you on February 9th, 2018 if I had known about you.” Lena played with Esme’s hair “Many years ago, Mommy was told she couldn’t have a baby and it broke my heart. I had always wanted to be a Mommy and then I wasn’t able to. You were created by a very bad lady using Mommy’s hair and your dad’s hair. I promise when you are older I will tell you all about it.” Esme nodded as she wiped her eyes with the hand that Alex wasn’t holding. Lena held onto Esme “Esme, my love you are Mommy and Alex’s precious baby. We are never going to take you back to Miss. Hoschchild’s house. Mommy and Alex love you so much Esme. When we go back in front of the judge, Mommy and Alex are going to change your name to Esme Elizabeth-Hope Danvers-Luthor.”
Esme looked at Lena and then at Alex “Does that mean that Alex is going to be my mommy too?”
Alex smiled leaning forward and kissed Esme’s head “Yes, I’m going to adopt you my love and you will have two mommies. We are always going to be a family sweet girl. We love you.”
Esme smiled as she laid against her mommy and looked at Alex “I love you both too.” she wiped her eyes “Can we go home?”
Alex nodded looking at Esme “Yes baby, you and your mommy stay here and I’ll clean everything up.”
Lena smiled thankfully to Alex as she held Esme. Lena could still feel the tenseness in Esme’s body so she began to rub Esme’s back and hum the Irish Lullaby that her mother had sung to her when she was scared. As Lena hummed the song Esme began to relax back against Lena.
Once Alex had finished cleaning up the picnic area she looked to Lena “Where did you learn that?”
Lena smiled looking away from Esme’s face and up at Alex “My mother used to sing it to me when I was scared at her age.”
Alex nodded and kissed Lena’s cheek “She must have been a wonderful woman and a wonderful mom.”
Lena nodded sadly as she rocked Esme “My mom was my hero.” When Alex motioned that she was ready to go home, Lena lifted Esme up into her arms and then took Alex’s hand as they walked back to the BMW. When they got to the car, Lena buckled in Esme and handed her baby doll to her “Let’s go home baby. We will put up your toys from the museum and later, we will get in our comfiest pajamas, order pizza, and then we will watch movies until you go to bed.”
Once they got home, that was exactly what they did. Lena, Alex and Esme played with her dolls and then for dinner they ordered Pepperoni Pizza and they watched movies, Esme laid with her head in Lena’s lap and her feet up against Alex. They were on their 4th movie of the night when Esme finally fell asleep while Lena played with her hair.
Lena looked over to Alex and sighed “I can’t believe that woman tracked her down and told her all of those things.”
Alex laid her hand on Lena’s shoulder “We will keep her safe Lena. I promise. Come on, let's get our little miss to bed and then we will watch a movie before we go to bed.”
Lena nodded as she played with Esme’s hair some more “She’s perfect and she’s ours.”
Alex smiled and picked Esme up to carry her to bed. “She's perfect like her mommy.”
Lena blushed looking at Alex and then she followed her girlfriend and Esme to the bedroom. Alex laid Esme on the bed and pulled the blankets over her before kissing her head and then moving away from the bed so Lena could tuck Esme in. Lena was kissing Esme’s head when Esme’s eyes fluttered open “Go back to sleep baby, We are getting ready to go to bed too. Mommy and Momma love you so much Esme.”
Esme stretched and smiled at Lena and then over at Alex “Goodnight Mommy and Momma, I love you.”
Alex and Lena smiled, kissing Esme again “Goodnight baby, We love you.” the couple said in unison.
Chapter 4: Esme Elizabeth-Hope Danvers-Luthor
Notes:
Sorry I missed updating yesterday! I hope that this chapter makes up for missing yesterday and possibly this weekend! If all goes well, my next update will be no later than Monday evening
Also, I noticed I've made a slight timeline error so I will be going back and fixing the age errors
Esme's birthday would actually be February 8th, 2018 since the invasion happened in May of 2017. So technically Esme is only three currently since it's the fall of 2021. A lot happens in this chapter which is why it is so much longer!
Chapter Text
Lena and Alex had just gone to lay down in their room when Lena heard the soft calls coming from Esme’s room “Mommy.” she said as she cried. Lena was immediately running into the room with Alex right behind her.
Lena got into Esme’s room and she felt her heart breaking as she saw Esme sitting up in the bed with crocodile tears cascading down her face. Esme’s eyes were red and Lena immediately pulled Esme into her arms and began to rub her back “I’m right here baby.”
Esme clung to Lena as she cried some more “I had a really bad dream. I woke up and I tried to calm myself down so I didn’t bother you but then I just got more scared. I’m sorry, please don’t send me back.” Esme then buried her face into Lena’s chest.
Lena held Esme tight as she felt the tears her daughter was shedding starting to soak through her shirt. “Baby, I promise, we aren’t sending you back. Why don’t you tell Mommy about your bad dream?”
Esme’s body began to tremble in her mom’s hold and she whispered “It was of the group home.” Esme sniffled lying on her mother “It started out that we were playing together in a big yard. You, me and Momma were playing. Then it cut to being back in the group home and I kept asking Miss Hochschild where’s mommy and she kept telling me I told you your mommy never wanted you. I couldn’t feel you in my dream anymore like I used to. It was like you weren’t there and it scared me mommy. It really scared me and now I don’t wanna go back to sleep. I’m scared my dream will come back.”
Alex sat at the foot of the bed “Esme? Would you feel safer if you slept with Mommy and Momma tonight?”
Esme nodded looking tearfully at Alex “Yes, but I’m too scared to go back to sleep right now. Lena and Alex nodded “Of course,” Alex said softly “Do you want to know what you Grandma Eliza used to do for me when I had bad dreams?” When Esme nodded Alex continued “When I would call for her after my bad dreams she would bring me warm milk to drink and she’d stay with me until I went back to sleep.”
“Can I have some warm milk in a sippy cup?” Esme was almost four and a Luthor so she didn’t really need a sippy cup but she was also very sleepy and didn’t want to risk spilling the milk and upsetting Lena or Alex.
Lena kissed Esme’s head “Momma can go get that ready and I’ll take you to our bedroom and get you comfy while we wait on Momma” Esme nodded and stayed clung to Lena’s body as Lena stood up with her.
Alex helped Lena get up from the bed and then walked to the kitchen to get the milk ready for Esme. Alex sealed up the sippy cup and then walked into the bedroom handing the cup to Esme “Alright sweet pea. Here is your milk. Are you, me, and mommy going to snuggle and watch TV?” Alex climbed into the bed and cuddled under the sheets with Esme and Lena.
Lena smiled as Esme snuggled between the two of them and then she turned on one of Esme’s favorite shows. Lena and Alex wrapped their arms around Esme and soon Esme began to drift off along with both of her moms. The three of them stayed snuggled together for the night. Esme, Lena and Alex barely even moved until the next morning.
The night terrors and ending up in Mommy and Momma’s bed went nightly for a month eventually Lena got to the point that she wasn’t sleeping well as she watched her daughter struggle through the night. Every night often ended up the same way that the first night had ended, the three of them in bed together.
Last night would have ended no differently had Lena tried letting Esme sleep in her own room but Lena knew she needed to get sleep the night before court. Lena finally went to sleep around 1:30am as she held onto Esme and Alex held onto them both.
Lena’s alarm went off at 6am, she immediately woke up and then crawled out of the bed quietly so that she didn’t wake Esme or Alex up. The court hearing wasn’t until 9:30am so she didn’t want to wake her girls up as early as she wanted to get up.
Lena walked into the kitchen and made herself a rather large cup of tea with some Avocado Toast and scrambled eggs before she walked out to sit on the balcony. Today was a big day for them and Lena was anxious about finally making Esme her and Alex’s legally. Lena with the help of Kelly and her lawyer had submitted the name change and Alex’s adoption paperwork two weeks ago. As long as the judge approved it by the end of the day Esme’s legal name would be Esme Elizabeth-Hope Danvers-Luthor and her birth certificate would have Lena Kieran Luthor and Alexandra Caroline Danvers listed as her parents.
Lena wasn’t sure how much time had passed but she had managed to watch the sun rise. Once the sun was up, Lena walked into the house and began to make breakfast for her girls. She made Alex and Esme some French Toast with Strawberries and blueberries on the top. Lena cut up Esme’s and placed it on Esme’s placemat that was in front of her booster seat and then plated Alex’s and placed it on the placemat in front of Alex’s seat. She poured Esme some Orange Juice and poured Alex a cup of coffee. Lena was getting ready to go get Esme and Alex up since it was 7:30 am when she heard the pitter patter of Esme’s feet followed by Alex
Esme opened the door and wiped her sleepy eyes “Mommy!” She giggled when seeing Lena and then Esme ran to Lena.
Lena smiled and lifted Esme up and pushed her hair out of her face kissing her cheek “Good morning baby love.” she smiled as Esme wrapped her arms around Lena’s neck. Lena carried Esme to her chair and sat her down. “Mommy made you breakfast and I gave you some Orange Juice.”
Alex smiled and followed behind Lena, once Lena had sat Esme down in the booster chair Alex stole her good morning kiss “How long have you been up?”
Lena kissed Alex and then smiled “I’ve been up an hour and a half. I made breakfast for myself and some tea and ate on the balcony. Today is a big day so I wanted to make sure to have enough time to be ready. I’m going to go take a shower and get ready, while you two eat breakfast then I’ll get Esme ready while you get ready.” Lena kissed Alex again before leaning down and kissing Esme’s head “I hope you two enjoy breakfast.” Lena then smiled at her girls and went into the master bedroom and took a shower. Once she was done with her shower she dried her hair and then put a soft curl in her hair. Once she had applied her makeup she walked into the walk-in closet and grabbed her emerald green dress and a pair of black close toed heels. Lena hadn’t really dressed this professional since she’d left LuthorCorp, it was going to take her a little time to get used to this look again.Once Lena was satisfied with her outfit for court she walked to Esme’s room and laid out a solid red ¾ sleeve dress and a white sweater before laying out a pair of brown ankle boots. Esme had been asking for her ears to be pierced like her moms but Lena wanted to wait until after court to get Esme’s ears pierced so she grabbed a pair of the Ruby stud Clip on earrings that Kelly had brought over as a before court gift. Lena then grabbe Esme’s favorite doll and dressed the doll in a matching outfit.
Once Lena was satisfied with the outfit choice she walked out and to the dinette area “Are we super sticky this morning?”
Esme held her hands up and shook her head no “Nope, I didn’t get sticky mommy!” she giggled as Lena grabbed a wet wipe and quickly wiped off Esme’s mouth and her hands before lifting her up “Lets go get dressed then.” Lena gave Alex a kiss once Alex stood up and then took Esme back to her room to get her dressed.
While Lena was dressing Esme, Alex quickly went and took a shower, then dried her hair and applied a light layer of makeup before putting on a pair of Dress Slacks and a Amber Yellow colored blouse before putting in tiny diamond stud earrings.
Once the family of three were dressed and ready for court, Lena placed a red bow in Esme’s hair at the bottom of the half of hair Lena had pulled back. “Let's go.” Alex smiled as she grabbed hers and Lena’s jackets as they locked their house up and then got into the BMW and they drove to the court house.
Once they arrived at the Courthouse and they were parked, Lena and Alex helped Esme out of the car and they began to walk toward the courthouse doors. Esme was holding both Lena and Alex’s hands as they approached the door of the courthouse. Esme’s hands began to get clammy and she stopped at the bottom of the steps and started crying.
Lena bent down in front of Esme and wrapped her arms around her “What’s going on baby?”
Esme let go of Alex’s hand and wrapped her arms around Lena’s neck “I’m scared. Mommy, I don’t want them to send me back.” Lena looked up to Alex and her eyes filled with tears, the truth was, Lena was just as afraid of the judge sending Esme back.
Alex bent down and wrapped her arms around Lena and Esme “It’s going to be okay, Kelly is here baby. She’s not going to let them send you back.”
Kelly, Kara, J’onn, Brainy, and Nia all walked up and instantly their arms were wrapped around the family of three. “El Mayarah” Kara said softly as she held them. “It’s going to be okay. Esme, you have a full team here and a full family.”
Esme looked up at Kara and smiled as she started calming down. Once Esme had calmed down the family walked unitedly into the court house. When Kara noticed that Miss. Hochschild was in the court house; she didn’t want to alarm Esme, Lena, or Alex so she alerted the team and they formed a barrier around the family of three.
Once they got into the courtroom, Lena and Alex’s lawyer Trevor Langan, Lena, Alex, and Esme walked up to the table in the front of the room. They sat down and then Esme climbed into Lena’s lap and took Alex’s hand while holding her doll.
The Cabinet’s lawyer sat at the other table while Kelly sat behind the stands.
The judge arrived and sat down. He called the court to order and then Miss Hochschild arrived and walked up to the table beside the Cabinet’s lawyer.
The Judge looked at the woman “You’re not supposed to be here, I revoked your foster care licenses.
Miss Hochschild looked at the judge and took a breath. “But I was still her guardian from the time she was found until Miss Olsen had her removed with no reasoning.”
Lena felt Esme’s tiny body begin to tremble and then Esme turned around and buried her face in Lena’s shoulder. Lena knew the tears were getting ready to come on. She tapped her lawyer’s arm.
Trevor Langan looked at Esme then looked at the judge “May I approach your honor?”
Judge Donnelly looked to The lawyer and nodded “Yes you may Mr. Langan.
Trevor walked up to the Bench “Your Honor, Miss Luthor’s Daughter Esme is very terrified of just the voice of Miss Hochschild. I think it would be in my Client’s best interest if Miss. Hochschild is removed.”
Elizabeth Donnelly nodded as she seen the four year old turned around and was trembling in Lena’s arms “I fully agree Mr. Langan. Miss Hochschild, you need to leave, you are no longer associated with my family court or with the cabinet, if this becomes a problem, I will have you held in contempt. I revoked your Foster Care licenses once Miss Olsen showed me the video and with your license being revoked, you have no business attending this adoption hearing.”
Miss Hochschild looked to the judge and began to speak up when the cabinet lawyer looked sternly at her sternly. The cabinet attorney looked to Judge Donnelly “I’m sorry your honor, I didn’t know her foster care licenses had been revoked.”
Judge Donnelly nodded and then had the Bailiff escort Miss. Hochschild out of the courtroom. “Okay, so with that disturbance taken care of. Let’s begin with Miss Lena Luthor” She looked at Lena “Miss Luthor, I see in my file that you are the biological mother of Esme but that you never actually signed any paperwork terminating your parental rights. Is this correct?”
Lena nodded looking at the Judge “That is correct, Your Honor.”
Judge Donnelly asked Lena “How did she end up in the foster care system?”
Lena took a deep breath “I didn’t know about her. I wish I had.” The judge motioned for her to continue with her statement “In 2017, I was abducted by Queen Rhea of Daxam and Rhea used my DNA and her son Mon-El’s DNA to create an Embryo which she implanted into a surrogate who then carried Esme to term and placed her in the system. If I would have been informed of her conception and her birth I would have gone to the Hospital the day she was born and brought her home with me.”
The judge nodded with a smile “I can see that you two have bonded in the past month.” She then looked at Alex “Miss. Danvers I see that you would like to adopt Esme.” Alex nodded, “Can you explain to me why you would like to adopt Esme?”
Alex smiled looking at the Judge “Lena and I have been in a committed relationship for almost two years. I love Lena and I love Esme. SInce Esme has come to live with Lena and I, we have bonded as a family and there is a love that I have never felt before when I look at Esme. I want to adopt her because when I look at her I don’t just see her as Lena’s daughter, I see her as our daughter and I would love nothing more than to make that feeling a reality.”
Judge Donnelly smiled as she continued her round of questions when she questioned Kelly her decision was settled and she raised her hand to gain everyone’s attention. “I have made my final decision.” She smiled and looked at the family “After hearing the statements from Miss Luthor, Miss Danvers, and Miss Olsen I have decided that it is in Esme’s best interest for Miss Luthor’s parental rights to be permanently reinstated and for Miss Danvers to permanently adopt Esme.” She looked down signing the papers to approve the adoption and the right reinstatement. “On this Day, September 30, 2021, I hereby grant Lena Luthor’s parental rights reinstatement, Alexandra Danvers adoption petition and the name change petition of Esme Luthor. From this day forward Esme will legally be Esme Elizabeth-Hope Danvers-Luthor. Congratulations to you three and I hope you live a promising life together as a family.”
Tears immediately began to fall from Lena and Alex’s eyes as they looked at Esme.
Esme looked up when she felt her mom’s breathing change “Mommy, why are you crying?” Esme hadn’t noticed that Alex was crying but she focused on wiping Lena’s tears “Mommy are you sad?”
Lena looked to Esme and kissed her head “No, baby mommy is so happy. That’s why I’m crying.” Esme looked over and saw Alex crying and she took her Momma’s hand.
Alex looked at Esme and leaned forward kissing Esme as well “You’re ours baby.. Your new name is Esme Elizabeth-Hope Danvers-Luthor.”
Esme looked at her mommy and momma and immediately started to cry “Nobody can take me away again?”
Lena smiled as she wiped away Esme’s tears “Nobody can take you away from Mommy and Momma ever again.”
Esme turned to look at the judge and she smiled “Thank you.”
Judge Donnelly smiled “Would you like to take a picture with me?”
Esme nodded as she looked around the room “Can we all take a picture?”
Judge Donnelly smiled, “Come on.”
The family walked up to the judge’s bench and then all of Esme’s aunts and uncles followed behind them and they all began to pose. Esme held the Gavel while she sat on Lena’s hip and next to Alex, which positioned her perfectly in the middle of her moms. Everyone smiled as the Bailiff took the picture on the camera that Kara had given him.
Once they were dismissed, Lena, Alex and Esme walked hand in hand out of the courtroom and down the steps. Esme pulled on Alex’s sleeve once they’d made it to the bottom of the steps. When Alex bent down Esme leaned against Alex’s ear “Are we going to give Mommy the ring now?”
Alex smiled and motioned for Kara to occupy Lena so that she and Esme could set up the surprise they’d been planning all week.
Kara and Kelly both knew the signal so they walked up to Lena and tugged on her shoulder. Kara wrapped her arms around Lena “I’m so happy that you finally have the peace in knowing that Esme is forever going to be yours.”
Lena smiled hugging Kara as the tears that had built up began to fall onto Kara’s shoulder “I’m so relieved that she’s ours permanently. Alex and I wouldn’t have stopped until she was.”
Kara nodded as she held onto Lena “I know it’s taken a huge weight off your shoulders.
Lena nodded, pulling back from Kara “It really has. She’s so loved and having all of you there for her just proved it.”
When Kara looked up and saw that Alex was ready she smiled and motioned for Esme to begin.
Esme walked up to Lena and pulled on her dress “Mommy? Can momma and I ask you something?”
Lena turned around and looked to Esme “Of course.” Once Lena turned around Alex got down on her knee and Esme showed the little ring box. Lena’s heart immediately began to race.
Alex looked at Lena with a smile “Lena, we’ve been together almost two years. You’ve been my light when I felt that everything was falling to darkness. When I first met you I fell in love with you instantly, I just didn’t have the courage to speak up and tell you.” Alex felt tears fall down her eyes “When we first met Esme I knew instantly that you were going to be an amazing mother and you have proven it over and over again. I love watching you with our daughter and I can’t wait for our future together.” Alex smiled as she took a breath “Esme is a Danvers-Luthor now and I’ve been dying to ask you this question. Lena Kieran Luthor, Would you do me the tremendous honor of becoming Mrs. Danvers-Luthor?”
Esme then spoke up and smiled as Alex helped her open the box “Mommy, will you marry momma?”
Lena felt a new wave of tears fall down her face as she looked to Esme and Alex “Yes, a million times yes.”
Alex smiled as Lena bent down and kissed her. “I love you.”
Lena smiled as she looked into Alex’s eyes “I love you too.”
Esme giggled as she held the box up to her moms, inside of the box was a beautiful 3 carat princess cut diamond ring with smaller diamonds along the sides of the white gold band. Alex grabbed the engagement ring and then slid it on Lena’s left hand.
Nia, Kelly, and Kara all took pictures while J’onn and Brainy had videoed the entire proposal. Lena wiped her tears looking at Alex and Esme. Esme smiled looking at her parents “We are all going to be Danvers-Luthor's!” She giggled as she looked at her moms.
Kelly was holding Esme’s doll as she looked at the family, she was thrilled that it seemed that everything was coming together for her friends and their daughter.
Chapter Text
Since the adoption had been finalized, Lena had taken a step back to be a stay-at-home mom. Of course she would work behind the scenes from the penthouse however, Lena and Alex had made the decision that the tower was no place for a three year old to be spending tons of time at and neither mom felt comfortable with putting Esme into a daycare so Lena stayed home while Alex worked in the field with the team. Lena loved being able to be with Esme every second of the day though so she didn’t complain.
Esme had returned to sleeping in her room about a week after the court date when the papers had come in the mail and Lena had read them to her. Lena and Alex couldn’t deny it though, they both missed their nighttime snuggles with their daughter but they were happy that she’d finally started feeling safe in their home again.
Lena had finally gotten the time to sit down and actually research her mother’s family now that things had settled down with Esme. However, between doing research on her mother, planning the wedding, looking for a house, and preparing for the holidays coming up Lena didn’t really have a lot of spare time but she always made sure to make sure Esme and Alex had all of her extra time. While Lena was working on her computer Esme often sat in her lap and pretended that she was working or she would color and then once Lena had finished up what she was doing, she’d get on the floor and play with Esme, they often played with her doll house.
When Kara had noticed that Lena was still searching for answers, she got Alex to tell her where Lena was born and then she bought them three tickets to Wicklow, Ireland. Alex and Kara talked Lena into ordering Esme’s passport and putting a rush on it so that the family could take off and go to Ireland.
When Alex got home that night she brought in takeout and looked to Lena while she finished packing Esme’s bags “Are you ready for tomorrow?”
Lena looked to Alex and took a deep breath “Honestly? I’m terrified of the answers we will find in Ireland, but I’m excited about going back and showing you and Esme my home country. I wish Kara could join us like she wanted.”
Alex sat down and wrapped her arm around Lena “She’s going to fly over. She just isn’t sure when. J'onn, Nia, and Brainy said they can handle National City for a week. Kara just has to get away from Catco.”
Lena nodded and she looked to Alex “I shouldn’t have sold Catco.”
Alex kissed her fiancée “You did what you needed to do at that time.” Lena nodded as she looked at Alex and cuddled into her.
Esme ran through the house and immediately jumped into Alex’s lap “Hi Momma.”
Alex smiled wrapping her free arm around Esme “Hi bug, did you and mommy have fun today?”
Esme nodded leaning against Alex “Yelp! We played with dolls! Mommy let me pack toys for our trip!”
Alex smiled, kissing Esme’s head. “I’m glad, what do you say, we go eat dinner and then we watch some TV and get in bed early, We have a long flight tomorrow.”
Esme nodded as Lena stood up and then Alex followed behind lifting Esme up as she got up. Once seated, the family enjoyed their dinner and their tv until it was getting hard for them to stay awake. Alex carried Esme to bed and covered her up in the fleece blanket that she’d begged for while laying her quilt over her. The two mothers kissed Esme goodnight and tucked her into bed before they put all the luggage beside their door so that it was easily accessible for when they were ready to leave the following morning.
Ireland
The Danvers-Luthor family had left National City at 6 am for their flight to Ireland. When they arrived at their Airbnb in Wicklow it was 12:15 am. After a long day of flying the family was completely exhausted so they ended up piling into the master bedroom of the airbnb and sleeping until 8am. When the sun began to shine through the sheer curtains of the Airbnb, Lena got up and then went to their complimentary kitchen area and made her a cup of the tea that had been provided to them. She made Alex coffee and grabbed Esme her juice that Lena had thrown in the fridge before they had gone to sleep when they arrived. Lena walked back into the bedroom and woke up her fiancée and their daughter “Good Morning my loves.” Lena smiled as she saw Alex and Esme begin to stir. Lena handed Alex her cup of coffee and then opened up Esme’s juice “I figured we all are hungry so we could get ready and head out for breakfast.”
Esme looked up at Lena “Pancakes?”
Lena smiled looking at Esme “We will find a place for pancakes. Come on Sweetie Mommy will get you dressed.”
Alex sat up in the bed and sipped her coffee “Thank you for making me a cup of coffee babe.” She leaned up on her knees to kiss Lena
Lena smiled and kissed Alex “You’re welcome. Once you’re done go ahead and get dressed. The high for today here is about fifty-five degrees so make sure you dress warm.” Lena had packed several different seasonal outfits for the family since Ireland’s weather was often unpredictable.
Lena went and opened Esme’s bag and then she dressed Esme in a pair of jeans with a pink sweater accompanied by a pair of boots and then she laid out a little jacket for Esme to wear. Once Esme was dressed, Lena fixed Esme’s hair with two side braids that met in the center of her head and then she put the matching bow in Esme’s hair “All Ready for your first day in Ireland.” She smiled, kissing Esme’s cheek.
When Lena walked back into the master room after getting Esme dressed Alex had already gotten dressed in a cream sweater with a pair of skinny jeans and boots and she was finishing her hair and makeup.
Lena smiled as she looked at Alex “It’s a sweater day for all three of us.” She kissed Alex’s cheek and then she grabbed her gray tunic sweater which she paired with a pair of jeggings and a pair of black boots. Lena quickly fixed her hair and make up before she looked up a breakfast diner. The family walked to their rental car and then they drove to the diner. Lena looked into the backseat and smiled “Your grandmother Elizabeth used to bring me to this diner for breakfast on the weekends.”
Alex listened to Lena talk to Esme as they parked and then walked into the dinner. Once they were seated Alex looked at Lena “You don’t talk about your mother often. I would love to hear more stories about her.”
Lena smiled sadly “I don’t talk a lot about her because I really miss her and now that I’m 28 my memories are very vague. She passed away when I was four. I remember that she was a teacher. We used to bake pretty frequently. We stayed with her parents some nights too. I couldn’t find out anything about them. My mom’s name was Elizabeth Kieran, however, many people knew her as Elizabeth Walsh and I’m not quite sure why that is. Possibly something due to the affair.” Lena shrugged her shoulders when the waitress walked over
The waitress grabbed her pen and notepad to take the order, however when she saw Lena she immediately stopped in her tracks “Lena.. Lena Kieran?”
Lena looked up with a soft smile “Well It’s Lena Luthor now but I used to be Lena Kieran, May I ask how you know who I am?”
The waitress smiled “ Oh! I’m sorry I forgot that your name got changed. I’m Kate, Lizzie and I were great friends. You used to call me Aunt Kate.”
Lena smiled looking at the woman “Oh, I’m sorry. I actually don’t remember but it's nice to be back in Ireland. Kate, let me introduce you to my family. This is my fiancée Alex Danvers and our three year old daughter Esme Danvers-Luthor.”
Esme smiled looking at Kate “Hi! Can I have pancakes?”
Lena couldn’t help but to giggle as Kate wrote down the order “What will your mommies have then?”
Esme giggled, “Mommy will want eggs and avocado toast. Momma will have pancakes too!”
Kate smiled as she wrote down the order “Alright, Lena, she looks just like you when you were her age.”
Lena smiled, taking Esme’s little hand “Thank you Kate. I’ll have tea with my breakfast, Alex will want coffee and Esme will want apple juice.”
Kate took the order and smiled “Well, It’s nice seeing you again Lena, I’ll go put your order in and have it out as soon as I can.” Kate went to put the order in and then picked up the phone and called a number that she hadn’t called in years “Amelia? She’s here with her fiancée and her daughter. Lena looks just like her mother and Esme looks just like Lena.”
Amelia took a deep breath “I didn’t think she was going to show up twenty-four years later. I’ll come to the diner after I call her.”
Kate hung up the phone and then she took the drinks out and once the meals were ready she took it out to the family “Enjoy breakfast you three.” She sat down all of the plates and refilled the drinks before she returned to work.
Lena, Alex and Esme ate and then they sat and talked about what they planned on doing on their first day in Ireland.
Esme looked at Lena “Mommy? Can we find a playground later?”
Lena smiled looking at Esme “Of course we can baby.”
Alex smiled, “I want to go to the Irish Fairy Trails.”
Lena nodded as she finished her food “Absolutely, We will do a lot of things together, I want to go shopping as well. There used to be a few shops that were mainly handmade items.”
Lena, Alex, and Esme finished their meals and they were about to ask Kate for their bill when Amelia walked into the diner and then walked over to Lena when Kate pointed to the table
Amelia walked up to the table, She was older at least in her sixties and she smiled at Lena “Lena?”
Lena looked at the woman and smiled slightly “Yes, May I ask who you are?”
Amelia smiled looking at Lena “I apologize for the intrusion. Lena, I’m Amelia Kieran. I’m your grandmother.”
Lena looked up at the woman in shock “Maimeó(Grandmother)?”
Amelia smiled, “Yes mo ghrá beag (My Little Love).”
She heard the name that only her grandmother called her and then she looked at her and noticed the woman’s features and she smiled “It really is you.”
Amelia nodded as she looked at Lena “Yes. You’ve grown so much Lena. I’m so incredibly proud of you.”
Esme looked at Lena “Mommy?”
Lena turned her attention to Esme “Yes my love?”
Esme looked at her mommy and pointed to the woman “what did those words mean?”
Lena smiled as she looked at Esme “Well Baby, this is Mommy’s Grandma. I’ll teach you those words when you’re bigger.” she then took Alex’s hand “Maimeó, this is my fiancée Alex and our daughter Esme.”
Alex smiled and extended the hand that didn’t have a hold of Lena’s “It’s nice to meet you.”
Amelia smiled, shaking Alex’s hand “It’s nice to meet you as well. I was actually wondering if you three would want to come to dinner tonight? I know it’s a little soon but today is my husband’s birthday and I know it would make his day if he got to see Lena and meet her family.”
Alex could feel Lena’s body as she offered and Alex looked at Amelia “If you leave us your address we may come over. We got here around midnight last night so I don’t want to make promises and end up not being able to make it.”
Amelia nodded and then grabbed her notepad and pen from her purse and then wrote down their address. “I’ve already taken care of your meals as well.”
Alex and Lena looked to Amelia and Lena spoke up “You didn’t have too..”
Amelia smiled and nodded “I know I didn’t have too but it's the least I can do. I really hope you three can make it. I have to go but, please if you’re up for it come to the house.”
Once Amelia left, Lena, Esme and Alex left afterwards, they explored all the things they wanted to explore and around 2pm Esme was ready for a nap so Lena and Alex were taking turns carrying Esme through the local shops. In one of the shops Esme spotted a pink and purple Irish Wool Blanket and she looked at her moms “Can I have that? Please?”
Lena smiled and grabbed the blanket and let Esme feel it. Once it was in Esme’s hands Esme laid her head on Alex’s shoulder. Lena smiled and took the blanket laying it over Esme. Esme snuggled into the blanket and slowly she fell asleep as she held the blanket in her hands. Once Alex noticed that Esme was asleep she and Lena walked up to the cash register and they paid for the blanket before leaving the store and going back to their rental car. Once the back door was open, Lena grabbed the blanket from Esme so that Alex could put her in the carseat and buckle her in. Esme was starting to wake up when Lena laid the blanket back over her “Finish your nap baby, we will go back to the Airbnb and let you finish your nap out before we explore anymore.”
Esme snuggled back up under the blanket and fell asleep in her carseat.
Alex and Lena buckled up and then Alex took Lena’s hand “ Babe, what’s going on? You’ve not talked much since your grandmother showed up earlier.”
Lena looked to Alex and sighed “It was a state of shock for me, I believed my mother’s entire family had passed away. After I went back to the states with my dad, I never heard from my mom's family. Now, I just want to know why. Why they didn’t fight to keep me here with them, I didn’t know my dad. He was a stranger. They were my family.”
Alex rubbed circles on the back of Lena’s hand “I’m sorry honey. We don’t have to go to dinner tonight with them. I want you to be comfortable.
Lena sighed and looked at Alex squeezing her hand “I’m having mixed emotions about it. I want to go see my grandpa but I’m afraid that I’ll discover that the reason they didn’t get me is because they didn’t want me. I don’t know what is the best answer. If you were in my shoes what would you want to do?”
Alex brought Lena’s hand up to her lips and kissed her hand “I would go because this is why we came to Ireland, we came to learn more about your mother and her family. You can find answers in them that you will always wonder if we don’t go and if you start feeling any uneasiness. We will leave.”
Lena nodded as she looked at Alex and laid her head on Alex’s shoulder. “Okay, we will go. I'd love to show you and Esme pictures of my mom.”
Alex smiled and nodded “You don’t have to feel pressure to stay if you are feeling ready to leave. Let’s go back to the Airbnb and rest some before we head over there. She put on the note that dinner would be done around 5.”
Lena nodded as she laid against Alex “Thank you.”
They arrived back to their Airbnb shortly after their conversation in the car, Lena chose to carry Esme in while Alex carried in their bags that they had acquired as they were shopping. Esme had gotten a couple of new stuffed Animals while Alex and Lena had gotten some things too including an Irish Wool Blanket for their bed at home. Lena took Esme into the kids bedroom and laid her in the bed making sure to keep the blanket over her. Lena tucked her in and then went into the living room and laid on the couch with Alex as they took a nap while watching a movie.
Once the family had taken their naps, they all refreshed their outfits and then they all got into the car, Esme held her blanket and her new teddy bear in her arm as they drove to their destination.
Once they got there Amelia and her husband Declan walked out to greet the family. Declan smiled looking at Lena as Alex wrapped her arm around Lena’s waist while Lena held Esme in her arms. Declan smiled looking at Lena “ mo aingeal álainn(My beautiful angel) I’m so glad that you made it. You look so beautiful and happy.”
Lena smiled as she leaned against Alex rubbing Esme’s back “Thank you Grandad. This is my fiancée Alex and our daughter Esme.”
Declan smiled looking at Alex and Esme “It’s very nice to meet you two, I’m Declan Kieran.” He then extended his hand to Alex
Alex smiled and extended her hand to shake Declan’s hand “It’s nice to meet you.”
Declan and Amelia smiled and Amelia looked to them “Please, follow us in.” Declan and Amelia smiled and then walked into the house.
Esme’s eyes widened when she saw a toy area in the living room “Mommy, look toys.”
Amelia smiled looking at Esme “Yes, after I met you this morning we got some of your Mommy’s toys out of her playroom.”
Esme looked to Amelia “Mommy had a playroom.”
Lena couldn’t help but to smile “Yes, I did. I used to stay here with them when my mommy had to work. My mommy was a teacher.”
Esme smiled as she looked at Lena “Can I go play?”
Lena sat Esme down on the floor and smiled “Of course you can baby, Do you want momma and I to hold your blanket?”
Esme nodded and handed Alex her blanket before she went to the area with all the toys.
Alex smiled as she watched Esme go to the toys before folding the blanket over her arm. Declan smiled “Please come sit on the couch. We are just waiting on a few more people to show up and we will begin to have supper.”
Lena and Alex nodded as they went and sat on the couch while Declan and Amelia sat in the living chairs. Lena looked on the table and picked up a picture she hadn’t seen in a long time and she felt her eyes fill with tears. Alex saw Lena’s tears and she looked at the picture “Honey?”
Lena smiled, wiping her eyes “It's my mom and I at the Lake House. I haven’t seen this picture in 24 years.”
Alex smiled wrapping her arms around Lena “You two were so happy.”
Amelia smiled and handed Lena a tissue “Lizzie and Lena were always really happy together. That was the summer before Lena turned 4.”
Lena smiled sadly “I loved her so much. She was my hero.”
Alex rubbed Lena’s arm kissing her head “I know, that's why we named our daughter after her.”
Amelia and Declan looked to Alex “You two named her after Lizzie?” Declan asked as he looked back at his great grand-daughter.
Lena smiled and nodded “Yes, her full name is Esme Elizabeth-Hope Danvers-Luthor.”
Amelia wiped away her tears “That’s a beautiful name.”
Alex nodded as she held onto Lena “Thank you, We thought it was the best of both worlds, My mom’s name is Eliza so we decided to choose Elizabeth to honor both moms even though it was Lizzie’s name.”
Amelia smiled looking at the family “It's wonderful.” Amelia looked at Lena and Alex and then looked at the time “Excuse me. I’m going to go get the charcuterie board.” She then walked into the kitchen and got the charcuterie board, when she saw the woman walking up the steps. Amelia opened the door as the woman approached the door.
The woman walked into the kitchen and smiled before she spoke softly “Are they here?”
Amelia nodded as she showed the woman the family to her “They’ve been here for a little bit, Lena was crying just a few minutes ago after looking at the Lakehouse picture.”
The woman nodded “That was the summer before her world was flipped upside down." The woman sighed "Let's go in there, I can’t wait to see her. I just hope she doesn’t leave.” Amelia grabbed the Charcuterie Board and walked out into the living room and laid it on the table as the woman walked out behind Amelia. It was now or never she thought as she stood in the archway between the kitchen and the living room “Lena?” she said softly as she looked on the couch.
Lena heard her name being called and she turned around and immediately gasped at the sight of the woman, it was like she was staring at a ghost. Lena felt her eyes fill with more tears as she looked at the woman “Mom?”

Chapter Text
Elizabeth had been receiving at least fifteen threatening calls from Lillian Luthor in the past hour. Lena was nestled up against Elizabeth chest asleep as Elizabeth stroked Lena’s raven locks. This had not been the first night that Elizabeth had received these calls. She had received them so many times that she’d memorized the number.
When the calls finally stopped that night, Elizabeth began to listen to the messages that had been left on the machine.
She listened to the messages and heard Lillian’s voice “When I find you and your little brat Elizabeth, you’re going to wish you had never been born and that you’d never slept with my husband. You ruined my marriage now, I’m going to destroy your lives, then I’ll make that brat of yours watch as I take away her mother for good. Then, I’ll end her life too.”
Once Elizabeth heard what Lillian was saying she grabbed the phone and called the safe number that Lionel had given her.
Lionel was still in his office when he answered the phone and heard Elizabeth speak in a trembling voice. She began to beg as she had done every night since she began getting the messages. “Lionel, you have to make her stop, she’s threatening Lena now Lionel.”
Lionel took a deep breath “Elizabeth, I’m not going to let her harm either of you. I’m going to get her to stop.”
Elizabeth looked at Lena who had curled tighter into her mother “She’s not going to stop until we are dead. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of Lena.” She then hung up the phone and began to plan a way that she could fake their deaths and make it believable so that both Lillian and Lionel believed they were dead.
Lionel went to speak but before he could say anything the line went dead.
It took Elizabeth about a week to get a plan in motion, She was going to fake their deaths by drowning. All they had to do was make sure that Lionel and Lillian believed that they were dead. Elizabeth had begun the process of changing their last names to Walsh. Elizabeth hadn’t listed Lionel as Lena’s father on the birth certificate. So changing Lena’s name wouldn’t be too hard once everything was set in stone. Elizabeth got in the water and kept her eyes on Lena as she was finishing lunch and then Elizabeth went under water to begin to follow through with her plan. When she came back up she looked around the picnic area “LENA!” she shouted as she got out of the water and began to run on the shore.
A tall and dark figure held the four year old in his arms as he walked toward the car.
Lena was terrified “MOMMY! Mommy Help!” she shouted before the man put her in the car and shut the door as the driver zoomed off.
Elizabeth ran towards the calls of her daughter and then she watched as the car left, Elizabeth ran after the car until the car vanished. “Lena.” she kept saying.
Present Day: Ireland
Lena went pale as she looked at her mother in front of her. This had to be a dream, her mother was dead, Lena had watched her drown in the lake behind the lake house when she was four. “This isn’t possible. You drowned,”
Elizabeth looked at Lena “Sweetheart, let me explain.” She walked over to take Lena’s hand
Lena looked to her mother as tears fell furiously and she took her hand away from her mother “You abandoned me, you all abandoned me, you forced me to grow up with the Luthor’s. You put me in a position where I wasn’t wanted. Where I craved to feel love and I would do whatever means were necessary to feel it even if it went against everything I knew was right.”
Elizabeth looked at Lena as her heart broke while watching her daughter’s heart break. “Lena, please listen to me. Please give me a chance to explain what happened.”
Alex wrapped her arms around Lena when she felt Lena’s full body weight shift against her and she raised her hand to stop Elizabeth from speaking “You truly don't understand what she has gone through and still continues to go through because of her last name . You have to give her some time to take this in, you were her hero and she’s just found out that the one person who she thought was different abandoned her at four years old.”
Lena looked at the woman “I named my daughter after someone who abandoned me.
Elizabeth sighed as she sat on her parents coffee table “Lena, I didn’t abandon you. Honey, I didn’t get a choice.”
Lena looked to her mother and took a breath. “You always have a choice, you just made the wrong choice.”
Elizabeth sighed but understood the reluctance “ Lena, if I would have had a choice you never would have been taken from me. Lena, all I’m asking is for you to give me a chance to explain and if you still feel this way I’ll leave and I won’t try to be in your life but please give me a chance Lena.” Elizabeth felt like her entire world had been crushed when she listened to Lena say that she’d abandoned her. That was never Elizabeth’s intention.
Lena held onto Alex and nodded “Okay.” Lena wiped the tears from her eyes
Esme looked back from playing and when she saw that Lena was upset she immediately ran and climbed onto the couch and began to stroke Lena’s hair “It’s okay Mommy,” she said softly before kissing her cheek as she stood on the couch cushions, she didn’t want her mommy to feel sad and she knew she liked when her mommy stroked her hair when she felt sad.
Alex watched Esme and made sure she was close enough to the back of the couch that she wouldn’t fall if she moved the wrong way.
Elizabeth took a deep breath as she watched her granddaughter comfort her Mother in a way that she used to comfort her “Lena.. Honey.. Lillian found out about you and me even though we were here. She would call our house phone and she use to leave messages threathening me that when she found us she was going to murder me in front of you. You’ve always been so kind and caring, I couldn’t imagine what it would do to you if she found us and she killed me as you watched.I called your father and explained the situation to him. He told me that she wouldn’t stop and that ultimately it was going to put you in danger. I begged him to make her stop for weeks, I mean as a mom how could I watch my precious baby be in danger because of me. I had to do everything in my power to protect you. So I came up with a plan.. we’d fake our deaths so that we could run and hide from her. That's why I began to go by Elizabeth Walsh. I was working on the plan, we’d go to the lake house alone and then we’d fake our deaths by drowning.” Elizabeth looked at Lena “I went in first, I was trying to make it look like we’d drowned. I went under the water and when I came back up, Lena you were gone. You had been ripped away from our picnic area.. I got out of the water and all I could hear was you crying and shouting mommy. I was running towards your crying and then you just disappeared.”
Lena looked at her mother and took a breath “They always told me you were dead. I don’t remember being taken.”
Elizabeth looked up at her daughter “I searched for you, when I finally found you, the adoption had been finalized and there wasn’t anything I could do to get you back because it had been reported that I was dead. You were so beautiful and I wanted nothing more than to take you home. I wanted to bring you home so bad. You belonged here with me, not in Metropolis with them.”
Lena looked at Elizabeth as did Alex “How do we know you’re telling the truth?” Alex held tightly to Lena and Esme since she’d moved to her lap.
Amelia looked at Alex and Lena “Why would she lie about it? She’s been in pain for 24 years because of what happened.”
Elizabeth looked to Alex “I’d never lie to her just as I’m sure you would never lie to your daughter.”
Esme looked at Alex “Momma.. Her heart is sad, I can hear it”
Elizabeth looked to Alex and looked at the girl and then back at Lena “How old is she?”
Lena looked at Elizabeth “She’ll be four in February.”
Elizabeth counted it up “The invasion.. I was on my way to National City that day, I was going to talk to her, when my plane landed I saw the news coverage, I wanted to help find you.”
Lena looked at Elizabeth and immediately pulled Esme into her chest and kissed her “Yes. It’s a long story that we haven't told her yet.”
Elizabeth nodded looking at Lena who had instantly gone into mom mode. Esme looked up at Lena and began to wiggle “Mommy you're hugging me too tight.”
Lena loosened up her hold on Esme “I’m sorry sweetpea.” Lena kissed Esme’s face.
Esme smiled “Can we go eat?”
Amelia smiled looking at Esme, Lena, Alex, Declan, and Elizabeth. “Of course we can if your moms say it's okay.”
Alex searched Lena’s eyes and when she couldn’t see the want to leave Alex nodded “Yes, we can go eat.”
Lena smiled slightly as Esme perked up “Let's go eat Mommy” She climbed off the couch and out of her mom’s arms and then held her hands out for her moms. Esme just wanted her mommy to be happy. She didn’t like that Lena didn’t seem like herself. So when everyone walked out of the room Esme pulled Lena’s hand to keep her back “Mommy, I don’t like that you're sad.”
Lena bent down and looked at Esme “Esme, baby, mommy is sad because according to your grandma, Mommy was taken from her.” Lena sighed “I thought my mommy had passed away but here she is and It's difficult for mommy to process.”
Esme wrapped her arms around her mommy and kissed her “She loves you mommy I could hear the way her heart was sounding. It was like yours when I came home.”
Lena kissed Esme’s cheeks and smiled “Thank you my sweet girl. Let's go eat.”
Lena and Esme walked to the dinner table and sat down. Alex had already made Esme’s plate and had placed it on the table at the seat Esme was going to be sitting at.
Lena sat at the seat beside Alex as she made her plate. She was still trying to take everything in. Alex laid her hand on Lena’s leg to try to give Lena some type of peace then Alex looked at Amelia, Declan, and Elizabeth “We appreciate the invite however, after dinner I think we will all three be leaving.”
Elizabeth wanted to ask why but when she noticed Lena was being silent she nodded “I understand. Thank you for coming. I’m sorry to disrupt your trip.”
Lena looked at Elizabeth “ It's not okay, I know you want me to say it is but it's not okay.” She then shoved her food away and got up from the table and went to the living room.
Alex went to get up and Elizabeth put her hand on Alex’s arm “Let me talk to her, this is my fault.”
Alex looked to Elizabeth “You’re the cause of this.”
Elizabeth nodded as she stood up “I know that’s why I should talk to her. Alex, I’m her mother, she deserved so much more than the life she was forced into. And I need to take the blame for it all. If she’s going to lash out, I’d rather Lena lash out at me so she can have you to fall back on.” Elizabeth then got up from the table and walked into the living room. When she saw Lena sitting on the floor with the picture frame laying in her lap. Elizabeth wanted nothing more than to comfort Lena but she knew that was a big step so she walked to Lena and sat beside her “Lena. I know you’re hurt.”
Lena looked at Elizabeth “Hurt? No, I’m pissed.”
Elizabeth nodded “I can only imagine how upsetting this has been for you.”
Lena looked to Elizabeth “Exactly, you can only imagine, try being the person who lived it. My whole life I lived in a lie, I mourned for you for 24 years. I grieved and begged the higher powers to take me away from the hell hole I was living in. I went to boarding school to escape the home of Lillian Luthor, she didn’t send me there, I asked to go. But, the pain never went away and eventually I got to a point where I created little imaginary boxes and shoved my emotions into them so I didn’t grieve and mourn for you anymore. Then I found out that all along, I was grieving a person who was very much alive, she just didn’t bother to come and find me.”
Elizabeth sighed and nodded “I did come and find you Lena. You were eight and I was in Metropolis. I saw you at school and my heart leaped out of my chest. I left before you could see me and I went to a lawyer. I had every intention of bringing you back home with me. When I talked to the lawyer, he researched the case and told me no lawyer would ever take my case because Lillian had gotten the adoption approved with a death certificate. In the eyes of the United States I was dead and no judge was going to overturn the certificate. Lena, I tried. Lillian just had me beat. Lena, I’m so sorry that you had to go through your life without me. I never wanted that for you. Lena I’m so sorry. I know that my words probably mean little to nothing to you but I truly am sorry. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, and I won’t bother you anymore. I just had to see you, even though In my heart I know this is probably the last time I will ever get to see you.”
Lena looked at her mother sadly. “I don’t want it to be the last time I see you, but I really need some time to process everything.”
Elizabeth nodded looking at Lena and tucking a strand of hair behind Lena’s ear “Take all the time you need, If you find that you still want to see me, I’ll be here but, if you find that you don’t want to see me I’ll understand. I can never make the past 24 years up to you Lena. Let's just have dinner and then I’ll give you my address and my number if you find that you want to contact me.”
Lena nodded and then got up and walked back into the dining room and took her seat. Lena remained silent as she ate, she watched Esme and wasn’t sure what was going to be the right decision. She’d always wanted this but now that her mother was sitting in front of her, she wasn’t sure what to do.
After dinner was over, Lena, Alex, and Esme loaded into the rental and left, returning to the Airbnb. Once they got there, Alex bathed Esme and tucked her in before she met Lena on the couch and pulled her into her arms “We don’t have to talk about it, Just let me hold you.”
Lena just nodded as she laid in Alex’s arms, she didn’t want to watch the television, she didn’t want to talk, all she wanted to do was lay in Alex’s arms with silence surrounding them.
Chapter Text
The next morning, Lena woke up before Alex and Esme. She turned over in bed and looked at her phone and she sighed seeing that it was 6 in the morning. She slid out of bed and then walked into the kitchen area of the little cottage they were staying in. Lena had ordered groceries yesterday so that they could have breakfast in the cottage some mornings. Lena immediately boiled some water before making herself a cup of tea, as Lena sipped the tea she thought back to the information she’d learned the night before and soon enough when she just wasn’t feeling up to thinking about it. She grabbed the necessities she needed to bake some cinnamon bread. She couldn’t let her mind freely race right now thinking about the fact that her mom and grandparents were alive.
Lena made two loaves of cinnamon bread before she began to make pancakes for her two favorite girls. Alex and Esme joined Lena in the kitchen around 9am and Alex looked at Lena “How long have you been up?” She asked
Lena looked at the clock on the stove “I woke up around 6 this morning.” She then handed Alex a cup of coffee and handed her a slice of Cinnamon Bread.
Alex smiled slightly, “Thank you, love. I love when you bake but Lena, what’s on your mind?”
Lena looked to Alex “I just needed to follow a recipe and concentrate on structure. Last night there was a lot to take in.”
Alex nodded as she looked at Lena “We will get through this.”
Esme walked up to Lena and lifted her arms up “Mommy?” She smiled sleepily as she held her arms up to Lena. Esme was three so she didn’t fully know what was going on but she had grown accustomed to Lena’s heart beat and when she heard the change she wanted to comfort her mother. Lena lifted Esme into her arms and shifted her to her hip so that she could continue making the pancakes. Esme snuggled into her Mommy’s neck after kissing her. “I love you.”
Lena smiled as she held onto Esme and flipped the pancake “I love you too my sweet girl.” Lena smiled as Esme relaxed against her mother.
Alex grabbed her cellphone and immediately took a picture of the scene in front of her, Lena in lounge clothes holding onto Esme who was still in her Pajamas while Lena was making Pancakes. Alex smiled as she watched Lena finish breakfast. “You two, are so sweet.” Alex smiled as she finished her coffee.
Lena smiled looking over at Alex “You’re too kind.” Lena finished plating the pancakes before placing the plate on the counter and carrying Esme over and sitting her in her highchair booster seat. Lena kissed Esme’s head before she began to plate a pancake for Esme and cut it up.
Esme smiled looking at the Pancakes on her plate “Is Aunt Kara gonna come today? She said she was coming.” Esme took her fork and began to eat the pancake.
Lena smiled as she looked at Esme “Maybe, we can try to call her. It’s 1 am so she might be awake.” Esme smiled as she looked at Alex and Lena and smiled. Lena grabbed her cellphone as she was texting Kara to see if she was awake.
Kara immediately giggled as she facetimed Lena “Well, Goodmorning.”
Lena smiled as she handed Esme the phone “Aunt Kara! Are you coming? Mommy found her mommy last night!”
Kara looked at Esme and smiled seeing the excitement in her niece’s eyes “I’ll see if i can get Supergirl to fly me over right now and I’ll take the rest of the week off from work.”
Esme nodded “Mommy made Pancakes! You need to hurry!”
Kara nodded “Alright, I’ll call her right now.” Kara ended the call and began to pack for the rest of the week to be in Ireland with her family. She left J’onn a message that she was just a button push away and then She grabbed her things and flew off to Ireland. She arrived at the Airbnb and knocked on the door.
Esme giggled as Alex went to answer the door “Supergirl brought Aunt Kara!”
Kara smiled as she walked into the cottage and over to the kitchen where everyone was sitting for breakfast. “Oh, can I have some pancakes too?”
Lena nodded as she handed a plate of pancakes to Kara “Of course, Welcome to Ireland.”
Kara smiled looking at Esme “Hi munchkin.”
Esme smiled at Kara “We have to tell supergirl thank you.” She smiled as she looked at Kara “Are you going to get to stay with us?” When Kara nodded Esme giggled as she finished her pancake and drank her milk “Mommy? Can I go play now?”
Lena smiled looking at Esme and then going to help her down. “Of course, Mommy will come and get you ready after Mommy, Momma and Aunt Kara are finished with breakfast.”
Esme smiled and grabbed some of her toys and ran off to play. Kara looked at Lena and Alex “So what Esme said earlier, is it true? I thought your mom was dead?”
Lena sipped her tea looking at Kara “It is, we found out last night. It was a big shock.”
Alex nodded as she took Lena’s hand “We went to a diner yesterday morning and found her mom’s friend Kate and then her grandmother Amelia showed up.”
Lena nodded as she sighed “I made the mistake of accepting the offer and then going to my grandparents for dinner. We went and we were talking and then my mother just showed up. She told me the story of how she was still alive and it’s been so hard to handle. Esme is convinced she loves me and she misses me but Kara, how can I trust my mother when it’s been 24 years since I laid eyes on her.” Lena dabbed at her eyes looking at her best friend.
Kara looked at Lena “The same way I let my mother back in when I found her on Argo, the same way I let my father back in. You just have to give your family a chance and Alex, Esme and I are going to be right here with you the entire time.”
Lena nodded looking at Kara and holding Alex’s hand “I don’t want to let everyone down and I don’t want Esme to get hurt in the crossfire. She is so excited about having a family after 3 years. I can't hurt her like that and I don’t want to be hurt like that again.” Lena sighed
Kara looked at Lena and laid her hand on Lena’s shoulder “I know you don’t want to be hurt by her again.”
Lena nodded looking at Alex and Kara “Thank you. I’m just not sure what the best answer is, I want answers from my mom but at the same time, I’m not sure her answers are what I’m going to want to hear. How could a mother knowingly be away from her own daughter for twenty-four years?” Lena felt tears in her eyes “I didn’t even know about Esme and I was away from her for the first three years of her life and it breaks my heart every day that she had to live with that awful woman because I didn't know about her. If I had known about her I would have brought her home as an infant, I would have raised her. She never would have had to live with Miss Hochschild.”
Alex and Kara listened to Lena’s story “Lena, only you have the right answers about what to do with your mother, We will support your decision regardless.” Alex said softly “If you want to go and talk to her mother, Kara and I will take Esme out for the day so you can talk to her.” Alex also wanted to let Esme pick out something for Lena. Esme had mentioned a necklace earlier. Lena’s birthday was coming up soon anyway.
Lena nodded “I think that will be helpful. I’ll probably call my grandmother since I have her number. Are you sure you two don't mind taking Esme out while I invite my mother over?”
Kara nodded “Of course we don’t! You clear the air and we will take the munchkin out for the day.”
Lena smiled and then walked into Esme’s room “Esme, baby?”
Esme nodded with a smile “Yes Mommy?” she said as she sat her toys down.
Lena smiled and grabbed one of Esme’s outfits and laid it on the bed. “Momma and Aunt Kara are going to take you out for a little while, I’m going to call my mother.”
Esme looked at Lena “Mommy, Why don’t you want us here?” She looked at Lena with concern on her face.
Lena bent down and picked up Esme “Well, Mommy needs to talk to her mom and I think it’ll be better if it's just me and her. I promise this will be the only day that Mommy won’t be with you Momma and Aunt Kara.”
Esme nodded and wrapped her arms around Lena’s neck and leaned in to kiss her “Okay mommy.”
Lena smiled and then she got Esme dressed and fixed her hair “You are going to have the best day with Momma and Aunt Kara. Mommy will be here when you, momma and Aunt Kara get back. I promise.” Lena smiled and kissed Esme’s forehead. “You just worry about having fun.”
Esme nodded, “Okay mommy.”
Once Lena had Esme dressed she took her back to Alex and Kara who were finished getting dressed. Lena bent down and pulled Esme into a tight hug “I love you so much little love. You go and have fun with Momma and Aunt Kara, Mommy will see you soon. “ Lena held Esme a little tighter than she normally did but Esme was like her little guardian angel. Esme also grounded Lena when she was nervous and right now nervousness was all she felt.
Esme held Lena and squeezed her neck, “Mommy, I love you too. It’s gonna be okay.” She kissed Lena’s cheek before Lena let go of her.”
Lena smiled, kissing Esme’s cheek and then she watched Alex, Kara, and Esme get in the rental and leave. She then took a deep breath and called Amelia ““Maimeó, if I give you the address of the AirBNB Alex and I are staying in, will you tell mom to come over? I want to talk to her, just me and her, nobody else. Alex has Esme out with her sister Kara.”
Amelia nodded “Of course dear, let me get a pen and paper.” Amelia grabbed the pen and waited for the Address “I’m ready when you are.”
Lena told her grandmother the address and then once she’d gotten it Lena hung up and went to get ready for this conversation with her mother.
Notes:
I am so sorry, it's been so long! My dog got hurt and we thought we'd have to put him down. I have three co-workers who are quarantined so that's messed my entire team's schedule up for the past week.

Chapter Text
Lena prepared some small brunch items as she waited for her mother to arrive at the cottage. When she heard the soft knock on the door Lena could have swore her heart was going to drop out of her chest before she could open the door. She downed the rest of her drink before going to answer the door. She didn’t know how to address Elizabeth so she just opened the door “Please come in, I made some brunch items.”
Elizabeth looked at Lena “You didn’t have to do all of this.”
Lena looked at Elizabeth and shrugged her shoulders “I know I didn't have to but I needed to in order to not break down after seeing you last night.”
Elizabeth looked at Lena “I didn’t mean to put you in that position Lena. I just wanted to see you, I wanted you to know I was alive and that I never stopped thinking about you.”
Lena looked at Elizabeth “I find it very hard to believe that you never stopped thinking about me. Considering it’s been Twenty-Four years since you even laid eyes on me or contacted me.”
Elizabeth looked to Lena “I’m really sorry that it’s been so long.”
Lena looked to Elizabeth “Do you expect me to just instantly forgive you or your parents for how I was raised? Do you expect me to fall into your arms and cry because my mom is back because honestly, it’s not going to happen. I’m never going to understand why you didn’t just immediately begin searching for me when I was taken. I don’t know how you can even get through the day and think that any of this is okay?”
Elizabeth looked at Lena “Lena, I knew I wouldn't have had a chance at getting you back. Your father had so much more money than I did. He could have gotten the best lawyers in Metropolis. Lena, I don’t expect you to forgive me, I truly don’t. I just wanted to see you again, I completely understand you not wanting me in your life but Lena I did think of you everyday that you were gone.”
Lena felt tears in her eyes “How do you survive the guilt? Esme, yes she is mine biologically and I didn’t raise her but I didn’t even know about her! Ever since that sweet girl came into my world, I have had a constant heartache knowing she grew up for three years in foster care. Three years, my sweet girl lived in constant fear. Even though it wasn’t my fault I still hate that she grew up that way.”
Elizabeth looked to Lena “I don’t survive it well, I survived by living with the fact that you might come back and that I could see you again. I wanted you Lena, I did. It just wasn’t possible at the time.”
Lena looked to Elizabeth “You didn’t know I would come back that's the thing. The Invasion made international news, YOU didn’t even come to make sure I was okay. I was framed, I went to jail. I have been in so much danger, at times, I just needed my mom but you never even showed up to try to comfort me. You knew about me and you never even tried.”
Elizabeth felt tears fall down her face “Lena, I’m sorry. I should have been there for you.”
Lena looked to Elizabeth meeting her eyes “Why wasn’t I important enough for you to come save me. You’re my mom and you could have protected me. You could have been there for me. All you had to do was google Lena Luthor and you would have seen everything. I just wasn’t important enough.”
“Lena, I never want you to think that you weren’t ‘important enough.’ Of course you were my love, that's why when you were eight I came back to the states and when I saw you, my heart broke and all I wanted to do was hug you and bring you home. But, I knew you believed I was dead and there was nothing to stop Lillian from making that a reality if I had been able to take the case to court. Lillian wouldn’t have hesitated to kill me and I couldn’t bear the thought of you being alone forever. I know forgiveness is something I may never get from you so, I’m not even going to ask because truly I don’t even believe that I deserve it. But Lena, there is no greater pain than knowing you were alive and that I couldn’t be around you.”
“What my life would be like? Really? What about what my life was? I was raised in a loveless household, father became an abusive drunk by the time I was eight years old. Lex was manipulative and is still manipulative. Lillian couldn’t stand me because I look so much like you. My life wasn’t peachy, Lillian sent me to boarding school almost immediately after Lionel died. I’m terrified because when they realize that Esme is a Luthor and a daxamite hybrid, Esme is going to be a target because she shares daxamite blood, and I’m terrified of something happening to my child! You don’t get to act like everything is okay because It’s never going to be mom!”
Elizabeth laid her hand on Lena’s arms “Lena, I am so sorry. I know I can never change what happened to you but I want to help, I will protect you, Alex and Esme even if it costs me my life. I know things can never be like they were before but Lena, do you think you could ever just give me a chance? Please just give me a chance to try and make things right?”
Lena looked to Elizabeth and took a deep breath “This is your last chance, and just so you know, I’m not doing this for you or even for me. I’m doing it for my daughter because she deserves it. She told me she knows you love me.” Lena took a deep breath. “I meant it when I said I didn't want last night to be the last time I see you but I still need time to process everything. We are going back to National City in a few days. If you truly want to have a second chance, I would like for you to come back to National City.”
Elizabeth nodded as she rubbed Lena’s arms “I would be honored to return to National City with you three. I’m being truthful when I say I want to try and make things right.”
Lena nodded looking at Elizabeth, “Then prove it to Alex, Esme, and I.”
Elizabeth nodded “I will, I’ll go and talk with your grandparents too, we might be able to make it a family thing, of course we will stay elsewhere so we aren’t intruding on you three.”
Lena nodded “Thank you.” She then began to eat some of the brunch items with her mother. Lena was truly hopeful that giving Elizabeth, Amelia, and Declan a second chance was worth it.
Elizabeth smiled as she ate with Lena, She was determined to make this chance worth it for Lena and her family. “You’re welcome.”
Chapter 9: Esme, Momma, and Aunt Kara's Day out
Chapter Text
Alex, Kara and Esme walked through Wicklow. Esme was in the middle of her momma and her Aunt Kara. She was happy to be able to spend this time with her Aunt and Momma. Kara looked over at Alex and smiled “Do you think Lena is going to find closure with her mother?”
Alex looked at Kara “I’m not sure. Lena was really upset last night when Elizabeth showed up. After we got back to the AirBnb she was just really silent and she just wanted to lay in my arms after we got Esme in bed. We laid on the couch for a couple hours before we went to bed. My heart broke for her.” Alex admitted thinking back to the night before and watching Lena lay in her lap and cry. “She was so broken-hearted.”
Kara sighed as she looked at Alex “I hate that she felt that way.”
Alex nodded, “I felt pretty helpless last night.” She sighed and then looked down at Esme.
Esme smiled at her mom and Aunt “Mommy is going to feel better soon. I just know it.” She then smiled seeing a jewelry store “Can we get mommy a necklace?”
Kara smiled looking at Alex “We could get her a necklace that contains all of your birthstones in it. Kara began looking up mother’s necklace and she smiled seeing an Irish Style necklace online at a place called Irish Traditions “ I think Lena will like this one, let's find a place to make it. The necklace was called a Mother’s Family Pendant and it contained a Claddagh and three stones linked together by trinity knots.
Alex, Esme and Kara found a jewelry store that could make the necklace while they were in the store. Alex walked in and grabbed the Pendant before walking up to the Clerk. The Clerk smiled “This is one of our best sellers, what are the birthstones that are needed in it.”
Alex smiled looking at the Clerk “The October Pink Crystal, April’s diamond and February's amethyst.”
Esme giggled looking at the clerk “February is for me!”
The clerk smiled looking at the young girl “February is when my birthday is too. How old are you going to be?”
Esme smiled looking at the clerk “I’m gonna be 4! This is for my mommy! It’s a surprise.”
The clerk smiled “Your Mommy will love it. I’ll go get this ready for your mommy sweetheart.” The clerk then moved into the back with the necklace.
Alex and Kara smiled looking at Esme who was still walking around the store “Momma, mommy will love all of these.”
Alex smiled looking at Esme “What else do you want to get Mommy?”
Esme smiled as she looked at the jewelry and when she saw a Mommy, Daughter heart bracelet set her eyes lit up “I want these but Momma we gotta find a third one! So Mommy, you and me, have matching bracelets.” The set had a big heart and out of the left corner there was a smaller heart cut out.
Kara began looking and when she found another of the same set she smiled “What if we get both of these that way You and both of your mommies can match.”
Esme nodded “Yes please!”She then looked at her Momma and Aunt Kara.
Kara smiled picking her niece up from the jewelry store “Your mommy is going to love both of her presents.”
Esme smiled “I think so too!” She then hugged her aunt as Alex walked up to the register with the jewelry she was getting along with the necklace.
Alex paid for all of the pieces and then walked back to her sister and daughter “How about we go grab some lunch and then get ready to go back to check on mommy?” Esme nodded looking at her momma. The three then walked to a little restaurant and sat down to have lunch. Once they had finished lunch Alex’s phone began to ring as Lena and Esme’s photo flashed across her screen for a facetime call “Esme, Mommy is calling.” Esme giggled and climbed into Alex’s lap as she answered the phone call “Hey.” Alex said as Esme smiled
Esme giggled seeing her mommy “Hi mommy!”
Lena’s face lit up when she saw Alex and Esme “Hello you two.”
Alex smiled as she looked at Lena “Did everything go okay with Elizabeth?”
Lena nodded “Yes, it did, I told her I couldn’t forgive her but that I’m willing to give her a second chance if she comes back to National City.”
Alex smiled looking at Lena “Did she agree?”
Lena took a deep breath “Yes she did and she’s going to tell my grandparents about that. I want them in my life but I’m not uprooting everything for them, we have a life in National City and I quite enjoy that life.”
Alex smiled as Kara spoke up “You know we support your decision Lena.”
Lena giggled “Yes, absolutely. I’m sure you three have had a wonderful day but I was calling to tell you three that my mom has just left to go speak with my grandparents so whenever you three want to come back to the Airbnb, I’ll be waiting. Esme, did you have a good day with momma and aunt Kara?”
Esme smiled “Yes Mommy! We got you presents!”
Lena giggled “Well you didn’t have to get me any presents but I’m looking forward to seeing them when you get back. I love you.”
Esme smiled, kissing the phone screen “I love you too mommy!”
Alex smiled holding onto Esme “We will be back soon honey, we were wrapping up to come back anyway. I love you.”
Lena smiled as she kissed the phone after Esme did “I love you too Alex.I’ll see you soon.”
Lena hung up the phone and then she grabbed a book and read on it as she wanted for Alex, Kara, and Esme to return.
Once Alex paid for lunch, the girls went to the rental car and then drove back to the Airbnb. Once Alex had parked and helped Esme get out of the car they walked into the cottage.
Esme ran into the house and directly over to Lena “Mommy!” She giggled as she climbed onto Lena after she’d put her book on the end table.
Lena smiled wrapping her arms around Esme “Hi baby girl. Did you have a fun time?” Lena smiled as she kissed Esme’s head.
Esme giggled and hugged Lena “Yeah we did mommy!”
Alex walked over with the jewelry bag and then kissed Lena before sitting on the chair beside of the couch “We all had a blast.”
Esme giggled and got down before going to get the bag from the jewelry store, she then grabbed out the bracelets “Look Mommy, We can all three have matching bracelets.” She smiled, handing them to her mommy. “We will always be close.” She smiled and then she reached for the necklace.
Alex smiled, grabbing the necklace and opening the box. “ Esme wanted to get her mommy a necklace, so Kara and I decided to get you a Mother’s pendant to represent our family.”
Lena admired the necklace and once she saw the birthstones she felt tears in her eyes. “I love it so much, I’ll wear it all the time. I’ll always have my girls with me.” Lena smiled as she looked at Alex “Will you put it in me?” Alex smiled and then grabbed the necklace and latched it around Lena’s neck. “Perfect.” Lena smiled as she looked at the bracelets and then she unlatched the one for Esme and put it on her daughter’s wrist before she took the bigger ones and put one on Alex’s wrist and the other she clasped around her own wrist “ See, Mommy and Momma told you we were going to be a family forever and these bracelets and Mommy’s necklace represent that.”
Alex smiled as Kara took a picture of the family of three all looking at each other then she sent it to Alex and Lena’s phones. “Such a beautiful family.”
Lena smiled looking at Kara “Thank you. It feels like it’s been a long time coming to become a family but I’m so happy that we are one and soon we will all share the same last name.”
Alex smiled as she moved to wrap her arms around Lena and Esme “Yes we will and It’ll be a wonderful day.”
Esme and Lena smiled as they relaxed against Alex’s arms.
Chapter 10: Happy Birthday Lena!
Notes:
I had every intention of posting this chapter yesterday but then we were hit with a sudden loss within my extended family. I'm not sure how the update schedule is going to be this week but I hope you enjoy this Chapter!
Chapter Text
Lena, Alex, Esme and Kara spent the remainder of their time in Ireland. It was nice to be able to bond without the worry that Kara and Alex would have to rush off to the Tower because of an attack. Of course Attacks in National City didn’t settle down, however the others and superman were taking care of everything so Kara could have a short vacation with her sister, niece and future sister-in-law. They would be leaving that night so Lena was trying to get everything ready.
Lena had just finished repacking Esme’s suitcase when Esme climbed onto the bed beside her “Mommy? Happy Birthday.”
Lena looked at Esme and smiled then she put the suitcase on the floor and sat beside her daughter “Well, thank you sweetheart.” She smiled and pulled Esme into her lap “You know this is mommy’s best birthday ever.”
Esme smiled looking at Lena “Really? Why?”
Lena giggled, kissing Esme’s head “Because I got the best birthday present in the world.”
Esme looked at Lena “Really? What?”
Lena smiled as she hugged Esme tightly to her chest “I got you, and Momma and I are going to get married. Finding you was Mommy’s favorite birthday present.”
Esme smiled as she wrapped her arms around Lena’s neck “I love you.”
Lena smiled, holding Esme “I love you too.”
Esme leaned back and looked at Lena “You didn’t say anything about your mommy and grandparents.”
Lena looked into Esme’s eyes “Well. Mommy is still trying to process everything with them but celebrating my birthday with you, momma and Aunt Kara is all I could want for my birthday.”
Esme smiled at Lena “You’re the best mommy in the world.”
Lena smiled as she stood up and got Esme’s clothes ready for the day. “And you’re the best baby in the entire world.” She smiled as she helped change Esme’s clothes “We are going to have lunch with Momma and Aunt Kara then we will come back and watch movies before we get ready to go home.”
Esme nodded “What about your mom?”
Lena smiled looking at Esme “My mom and grandparents are going to fly back to National City so that we can try to repair our relationships. Esme, Mommy wants you to know that it doesn’t matter if things with my mom and grandparents get better. You and Momma are two of the most important things to me and with or without them, you and momma will always be two of the most important things to me. I promise.”
Esme smiled as she finished getting ready “I love you Mommy.” She smiled before she grabbed Lovie and then went into the living room to find Kara. “Aunt Kara!”
Kara smiled, grabbing Esme up and pretending to let her fly in the air “Hi Esme, What do you want to do today? I know we are going to celebrate your Mommy’s birthday.”
Esme giggled and noticed that Alex and Lena were still packing “I wanna make mommy a birthday card without her knowing.”
Kara smiled and then went and grabbed some blank paper and colored pencils and crayons and took Esme into her guest room. Kara sat in the floor with Esme and handed Esme paper and colored pencils and crayons.
Esme began to draw a picture of her family on the paper, she made sure to include Kara, Lena, Alex, and Esme all holding hands. Kara then wrote on the card Happy Birthday Mommy, Love Esme. Kara and Esme spent hours coloring and drawing together while Alex and Lena finished packing up. Kara’s superspeed had been helpful in packing her bag for the return.
Esme climbed into Kara’s lap and looked at her “Aunt Kara? Should I make something that has Mommy’s mom and her grandparents?”
Kara looked to Esme “I don’t think mommy is ready for that right now sweetheart, it’s been very hard on mommy to see them all again. I remember when you were reunited with Mommy, you were really happy. Your mommy isn’t as happy as you were when you found mommy again. She’s going to be okay though Esme because she has you and your momma.”
Esme nodded “I don’t want mommy to be sad, it makes me sad. Can we go and give Mommy’s card to her now?”
Kara smiled, kissing her niece’s head before she opened the door and they went to find Lena.
Alex and Lena had just finished in their bedroom and Alex looked to Lena “I know today wasn’t the birthday you dreamed of having in Ireland. I’m sorry that it's been such a rough week in Ireland.” Alex said as she sat on the bed and pulled Lena into her arms “I know I told you when you woke up, but, Happy Birthday sweetheart. We are going to enjoy these last few hours and celebrate your birthday before we go home. Then we will have a celebration with our family back in National City tomorrow.”
Lena smiled as she relaxed against Alex’s arms “I love being in Ireland but I’m ready to go back to National City and be with everyone there. I know my mom and grandparents are coming back but I’m just not sure how everything will play out with them back in National City.”
Alex rubbed Lena’s shoulder “ We will cross that bridge when we get there Lena, for now, lets just enjoy this time we have together with Kara and our little girl.”
Lena nodded as she heard the pitter patter of Esme’s feet in the living room “Let’s get ready to go eat. Esme and Kara must be done with their Aunt Kara and Esme time.” She smiled as she kissed Alex and then went to the living room with Alex.
Esme smiled seeing her mommy and momma “Mommy! I made this for you!” She ran the card over and handed it to Lena and put on her biggest smile.
Lena smiled taking the drawing from Esme “Oh, I love it so much, Thank you my sweet girl. I love it. I'll put it in mine and momma’s bag so that when we get home I can put it on the door of the fridge, so I can see it every day.” Lena smiled as she kissed Esme’s head and hugged her. “Let’s get ready to go eat and then we will watch movies before our plane leaves tonight.” The family then left and went to eat.
Once their meal was finished and they had made it back to the Airbnb. Alex, Kara, Lena, and Esme all sat together and watched a few movies before Alex’s alarm went off signaling that it was time for them to go to the airport. “Alright, it’s time to go home, are you all ready?”
Esme smiled as she laid her head on Lena’s shoulder “Can I go to sleep on the plane?”
Lena smiled as she stood up and rubbed Esme’s back “Of course you can sweetheart. Let’s go home.”
Kara carried all the bags out to the car and then once she saw that her family was settled she smiled “I will see you all back in National City.”
Kara flew off as Lena, Alex and Esme drove to the airport. They boarded the plane and flew home. Once they landed at the airport in National City Lena, Alex and Esme went home and they all climbed into the bed so that they could take a nap.
Several Hours Later
Once the family woke up and got ready for their evening at the tower with their friends. Lena checked her email and saw that Elizabeth, Amelia and Declan would be there the following day. She locked her phone and then turned her attention to her family as they got ready to head to the tower.
Lena smiled as Esme twirled in her dress “Aunt Nia picked it out for me!” she smiled as she twirled again.
Lena smiled, picking Esme up “You look beautiful Sweetheart.”
Alex smiled as she took a picture of both Lena and Esme as they twirled around in the living room “Let’s go to the tower you two. I’m sure that everyone is waiting for us.”
Lena smiled as she sat Esme on the ground before they walked out to the car. The three of them held hands as they walked to the car. Once they got to the car, Lena buckled Esme in and they got in the passenger seat as Alex got into the driver’s seat. Alex took Lena’s hand as she drove them to the tower.
Once they arrived at the tower, they saw a banner that said ‘Happy Birthday, Lena’ and then they were met with hugs from Kelly, Nia, Brainy, J’onn, Eliza, and Kara. Esme smiled seeing the donuts and the big belly burger and she ran around the tower playing with Kelly and Nia.
Lena ate her burger and then grabbed a donut as she watched Esme play with Kelly and Nia.
J’onn smiled as he sat down beside Lena and Alex “So, Kara told us you found your mother?”
Lena nodded as she looked at J’onn “My mother and my grandparents, they are supposed to be here tomorrow. I told them that if they wanted to have a second chance to be in My life and a chance to be in Esme and Alex's, they needed to come here for a little while.”
J’onn looked at Lena “I know that couldn’t have been easy. You know that we all have your back here, you are not only a part of our team Lena but you are a part of our family. You’ve always belonged with this family Lena.”
Lena smiled looking at J’onn “Thank you. J’onn. Esme is blessed to have a Grandpa like you.”
J’onn smiled as he leaned over and hugged Lena and then he hugged Alex “On the contrary, Esme is blessed to have you two as her moms.”
As the night went on Lena had started to feel at ease again as she was surrounded by the family that she hadn’t been born into but that she had chosen.
Chapter 11: Halloween!

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Halloween was coming up, and with all the chaos of the last week, Lena had honestly forgotten that Trick-or-Treat was coming up , until Alex had asked her about them going out with Esme. The following morning Esme walked into her mom’s room and smiled. It was 8 in the morning when she climbed into her mom’s bed. Lena was already awake and she was reading a book. Lena smiled, feeling the bed dip once Esme crawled between them “Good Morning, sweetheart.” she smiled as she laid her book on the side table. Lena smiled as she opened her arms up to Esme who soon crawled into her arms. “I thought you would be sleeping longer.”
Esme smiled as she snuggled into Lena. “ Mommy? Are we going to go out and trick or treat?”
Lena looked down at Esme and nodded “Yes, we will. We are gonna go get you a costume today. Mommy almost forgot about it until Momma reminded her about it last night.” Lena smiled “We were so busy having fun in Ireland that Mommy forgot but we still have a few days before we go and we can go to a place called Spirit Halloween today, do you know who you’d want to be for Halloween?”
Esme looked at Lena “I don’t know mommy.” Esme had never actually been Trick or Treating so she was just excited to be out with her mommy and momma.
Lena nodded “Alright sweetheart, We will figure it out.” Lena kissed Esme and then smiled “How about in the spirit of halloween, Mommy makes some Pumpkin shaped pancakes.”
Esme nodded and smiled “I’d like that! Let's go mommy!”
Alex had woken up once Esme had climbed into the bed and she smiled listening to their daughter “We can even watch cartoons this morning.” She smiled when Esme nodded “Come on! Let's go have breakfast and cartoons!”
The family of three walked out of the bedroom together. Lena smiled as Alex and Esme went to go cuddle on the couch while she made pumpkin-shaped pancakes. Lena made Pumpkin-shaped pancakes, sausage links and then she cut up some strawberries and bananas before she made Esme’s plate. She sat the plate at Esme’s chair and smiled before plating the rest of the pancakes and sausage and bringing the plate of fruit over to the table “Alex, Esme. Come on, let's have breakfast. She then grabbed one of Esme’s straw cups and filled it with orange juice as she grabbed two mugs from the cabinet, she took the cups to the table and then she went and grabbed the coffee and filled up the two mugs.
The family enjoyed breakfast and then sat and watched some cartoons before they went to Spirit Halloween to let Esme pick out her costume. Once they got into the store Esme’s eyes grew as she saw all the costumes “I get to pick out whatever I want?”
Lena and Alex smiled “Yes you do honey, Whatever you want.” Lena smiled as she took Esme’s hand “Come on sweetheart, lets go to the costumes that are your size.” Lena, Esme and Alex walked to the children’s costume section.
Esme walked all around the children’s section and looked at all the costumes. She began to pick out multiple costumes and hand them to Alex. She picked out Cinderella, Ariel, Supergirl, Korra from her new favorite tv show The Legend of Korra, Magenta from Blue's clues, and then she picked out Vampirina and she smiled at her moms “Mommy! Look!” she squealed as she looked at the costumes. “Can I have them all?
Lena giggled looking at all the costumes “Baby, you can’t wear all of them”
Esme looked at Lena “mmhmm, I can wear one each day.” She then looked at her mommy with puppy dog eyes “Please?
Alex giggled as she looked at Esme’s puppy dog eyes “Lee, come on it’s her first halloween with our family.”
Esme nodded “Please mommy?” She looked at Lena and smiled
Lena looked into Esme’s blue-green eyes and she nodded “Okay, we can get them all”
Esme giggled and wrapped her arms around Lena’s legs “Thank you.”
Lena took the costumes and walked up to the cash register and paid for the seven costumes and then they left Spirit Halloween and grabbed lunch before they went home. Once they got home Esme smiled and held up her Cinderella costume “Can I put it on?” She asked Alex who nodded and helped her put on the costume. Esme and her moms ended up watching all three of the Cinderella movies that Saturday. After spending the day together Alex bathed Esme while Lena got her room ready for bedtime.
Every day, for the rest of the week Esme dressed up for Halloween. It was finally Halloween night and Esme was thrilled she couldn’t wait to go trick or treating with her moms. She laid all of her costumes out on her bed and looked at each of them. After the family ate dinner Esme narrowed her choices down to Supergirl and Korra for Trick or Treat. Esme walked out of her room and sighed “Mommy, Momma. I don’t know who I wanna be, Korra or Supergirl. Will you help me?”
Alex and Lena smiled as they walked Esme into her room and tried helping her decide on her costume, eventually Esme decided to go as Supergirl for Trick or Treat so that she wouldn’t have to wait for Korra to be washed before wearing her to dress up again.”
Once Esme was almost ready Kara arrived at the house and was knocking on the door “I bet that’s Aunt Kara.” Lena said as she looked at Alex. Lena was curling Esme’s hair since Esme had asked for Super Girl’s curls for halloween too. “Alright, we are almost done here, Maybe Momma will go and answer the door so that we can surprise Aunt Kara with how you look, she’s going to love it.”
Alex smiled taking a picture of Lena curling Esme’s hair and then she went and let Kara into the penthouse “Esme wants to surprise you with her halloween costume.” Since Alex and Lena had gotten custody of Esme they had explained to Esme that Kara was Supergirl because one night while they were having game night, Esme had woken up and walked out of her bedroom quietly just as Kara had changed into Supergirl to go to an alien attack in the city. Alex and Lena explained to Esme the importance of keeping Aunt Kara’s secret a secret. Esme understood that it was important and promised that she wouldn’t tell anyone and she hadn’t told anyone, not even Amelia, Declan, and Elizabeth.
Kara smiled looking at her sister “Oh, I can’t wait!” She smiled as she walked over and sat down on the couch, “I made her a treat bag.” Kara smiled showing it to Alex. “I wanted to be the first one to give her something for Trick or Treat.”
Alex smiled as she sat down with her sister “She’s going to love it.”
About 10 minutes later, Lena opened the bathroom door and smiled “Kara, close your eyes and no xray vision, your niece wants to surprise you.”
Kara nodded with a smile as she closed her eyes “Okay, I’ve got my eyes closed and I promise no X-ray vision.”
Esme smiled as she walked out behind Lena to be double sure that her Aunt Kara couldn’t see her. “On Three.”
Kara nodded with a smile “Okay, On three.”
Esme and Lena counted to three and then Lena moved to the side as Esme stood in the SuperGirl pose. “Look Aunt Kara!”
Kara smiled looking at Esme “Well, aren’t you the cutest little supergirl. I’m so honored that you chose to go dressed as me for Halloween.”
Esme giggled looking at Kara “Mommy and Momma helped but I love it!”
Kara smiled and handed Esme her bucket “Then how about we go get some candy?”
Esme nodded as she looked at Kara. “Do you think i could take a picture with Supergirl since I’m being her”
Kara smiled and looked at the time “Let me go get her.” She smiled and then went to change into her suit and got ready so that she could take some pictures with her niece before they went Trick or Treating. Once they had finished their photo shoot Kara went and changed back into her Kara clothes as they got ready to go trick or treating.
They started out at the tower and then they walked around National City. By the time they were finished Trick or Treating Esme had received tons of candy that Lena and Alex knew she would never finish off so they would potentially throw away the majority of the candy. Esme yawned as they left their last house “I’m sleepy.” She said softly as she walked over to Lena and lifted her arms up to her mommy “Will you carry me?”
Lena smiled and lifted up her tiny Supergirl as they went back home. On the way home Esme fell asleep on Lena’s shoulder. Lena took comfort in knowing that Esme finally felt safe enough to fall asleep on her shoulder.
Once they were back home Lena and Alex double teamed to get Esme in her Pajamas. When Lena and Alex laid Esme down in her bed Esme opened her eyes up and said “I gotta brush my teeth.”
Lena smiled, kissing Esme’s head and tucking her in “we will brush them three times tomorrow baby love. Go to sleep, you were asleep on mommy’s shoulder after trick or treating. It’ll be okay for tonight baby. Happy Halloween, Mommy loves you.”
Alex then leaned over and kissed Esme’s head “Goodnight Super Esme, Momma loves you, I’ll see you tomorrow at the tower when mommy brings you. Get some sleep.”
Esme smiled sleepily at her moms “Goodnight Mommy and Momma, Happy Halloween, Love you.”
Lena and Alex smiled as they turned on Esme’s nightlight and then left Esme’s bedroom.
Notes:
For the time being, I'm going to have to minimize my updates to at least once a week until I get some trainings over with! I'm hoping that by moving things to once a week I'll be able to focus on my chapters longer.
November through February are going to be very busy months for me. I have many work trainings through these months and I am due February 11th with my baby so on top of my trainings I will also be preparing for his arrival! He will probably be here around the first week of February so I will possibly be able to update more while I am on Maternity leave! I don't plan on giving up on this story unless the readers just stop having interest in it!

Chapter Text
Two weeks after Halloween Lena, Alex, and Esme piled into their car and began to drive to the outside of town. Things had settled down now that Elizabeth, Amelia and Declan had moved to National City. In order to rebuild their relationship they had decided to start doing weekly dinners. Lena was a little frightened that the dinner would turn out a disaster like the one in Ireland had changed but she was hopeful that it would go over well.
Esme looked up at Lena from the back seat “Mommy? It’s gonna be okay.”
Lena smiled looking back at Esme from the passenger seat “I hope so little love.” Lena smiled as she blew Esme a kiss before she looked at Alex.
Alex held onto Lena’s hand as she drove to the house which Elizabeth and her parents were living in. Once they pulled in Alex looked to Lena “Are you sure you’re ready for this?”
Lena sighed looking at Alex “I’m not sure, but I want to at least give them a chance, I missed my mom for over twenty years. Now, she's here, she is alive and I want the chance to get to know her again. I want you and Esme to be able to know her and my grandparents.”
Alex nodded, kissing Lena’s hand “Alright. I’ll get the cookies you and Esme baked out of the car, while you get Esme out.”
Lena nodded and then got out of the car and unbuckled Esme and lifted her up and settled her on her hip. Yes, Esme was perfectly capable of walking but holding Esme was more for Lena’s serenity than anything. Lena kissed Esme’s cheek as she walked into the house behind Alex.
Alex walked in and sat the cookies on the table and then walked over to help Amelia finish cooking “I’ll help you.” Amelia gave Alex a smile and a nod before handing her a spatula and telling her what to help with
Lena smiled as she held onto Esme and walked into the living room to find her mom.
Elizabeth was sitting on the couch looking through some of her photo albums when she felt the couch dip beside her. She looked over and smiled when she saw Lena “I’m glad you came.”
Lena nodded, adjusting Esme in her lap as she looked at Elizabeth “Well, I want to give this relationship another chance for my fiancee and my daughter.”
Elizabeth smiled, laying her hand on Lena’s shoulder, “Thank you.”
Esme giggled looking at Lena and Elizabeth “Mommy? Nana? Can we make cookies?”
Elizabeth nodded as she looked at Esme “I think we can definitely make cookies. Do you want to go with me to the kitchen to see what kinds of cookies Gran might have?”
Esme nodded as she climbed off of Lena’s lap and then took Elizabeth’s hand and walked with her grandmother to the kitchen “Mama! We are gonna bake cookies.”
Alex smiled looking at Esme “Are you? I bet that will be fun!”
Esme giggled and began to look at her Gran “Gran where's the cookies?”
Amelia giggled and opened the freezer grabbing some chocolate chip cookie dough. “I have some cookie cutters too that we can use.”
Esme smiled looking at Amelia “Okay! Can I help mama?”
Alex nodded “Sure you can, how is mommy?”
Esme smiled as she looked at Alex “She’s okay, she’s nervous.”
Alex nodded “Alright, I’m sure she’ll be okay. If you’ll stay with Nana and Gran I’ll go talk to mommy.”
Esme nodded “Mmkay Mama!” she smiled as she focused on cooking.
Alex went into the living room to find Lena. When she didn’t see Lena in the living room she looked out the glass doors and saw Lena outside on the deck so she walked out and wrapped her arms around Lena from behind “Hey, I guess your nerves are getting the best of you.”
Lena leaned back against Alex and nodded “Just a little bit, I figured I would come outside to try and calm down before my grandfather gets here and before dinner. Esme is so excited about getting to bake cookies tonight.”
Alex smiled as she pulled Lena’s body close to her “Honey, I know that this is difficult after 24 years. I’m here with you and our daughter is here with you. Let us ground you when you don’t feel like you can ground yourself.”
Lena nodded as she relaxed against Alex “I’m trying, this is just harder for me than I thought it would be, I mean.. I thought she was dead the majority of my life.”
Alex nodded, kissing the back of Lena’s head “I know, it probably feels like your entire world has shifted in just a matter of months. We got a gorgeous baby girl, and then in the middle of adjusting to our new life as moms, you found your family. I know when my dad came back and then died again, I felt like my world had crashed all around me as well. I’m going to support your decision no matter what. I love you Lena Kieran Luthor..”
Lena smiled as she laid against Alex and finally began to feel at peace with her decision to try to reconnect with her family after twenty-four years. “I love you too, Thank you.” she said softly, closing her eyes as she listened to their surroundings. “Being outside of the City is so peaceful.”
Alex nodded “We will find a house outside of the city, I think it’ll be lovely to not be in the city anymore. Esme can grow up with a yard and so many other things. She’ll get the chance to learn about her powers without the chaos of the city.”
Lena smiled as she listened to Alex “I found a nice little home on the outskirts of town, it’s five-bedrooms with two offices and many other things, I know that’s a little large but Esme could have her own play room, We could have a library. We could make it anything we wanted.”
Alex smiled, holding onto Lena “We can go look at it this weekend.”
Lena nodded as she looked into the sky “I’ll call the realtor tomorrow.”
Alex nodded as she let go of Lena “I’m going to go finish dinner with your grandmother, We will be waiting on you to bake cookies, Esme is really excited about that.”
Lena nodded, turning back and kissing Alex “Thank You, I love you.”
Declan walked out of the door and looked at Alex and Lena “Alex? Would you mind if I sat and talked with Lena?”
Alex looked into Lena’s eyes and when Lena gave approval Alex nodded “Sure, I need to go back in and help anyway and try to keep our daughter from eating Raw cookie dough.” Alex giggled and then kissed Lena again before going back into the house.

Chapter Text
Declan sat in one of the balcony chairs and looked at Lena “I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult this is for you, Lena.”
Lena looked at Declan and sat in one of the opposite chairs before she sighed, “No, you can’t for twenty-four years all I ever wanted was to feel like I belonged and now that I have that family, my beautiful little girl and my beautiful fiancee. My whole word was turned upside down again.”
Declan sighed “Lena, we didn’t mean to make you feel like your world was turned upside down. We just missed you.”
Lena put her hands over her eyes and took a deep breath “Then why didn’t you look for me when my dad died? It was all over the news.” Lena looked at Declan “Why did you wait until I was twenty-eight, and on vacation with my family? I was separated from Esme for four years, and it’s almost destroyed me. I wasn’t even there when she was born. I didn’t even know about her and it’s destroyed me.. You three knew about me.”
Declan looked to Lena and reached out for her “Lena, we thought you were better off. Lena, you have to believe that we are all so very sorry about this.”
Lena glared over at Declan before looking off into the night “Sometimes, sorry doesn’t cut it. You all have stayed away for the majority of my life. I’m only open to this entire arrangement because of Alex and Esme.”
Declan looked at her hands “Lena, we love you so much we never wanted this to happen. You were always our pride and joy Lena.”
Lena felt tears in her eyes “Then you should have tried to find me. When I was framed, you weren’t there. When I was kidnapped, you weren’t there. When my father died, you weren’t there. When Lillian shipped me to boarding school when I was eleven, you never even bothered to try to find me. When Lex held me hostage not once but twice, you never even attempted to try to make sure I was okay. When I was told I was infertile, I was utterly alone.” Lena let her tears fall down her face “So if you three are coming to me for absolution about it all, I can’t give it to you, no, I won’t give it to you. Family is supposed to be there for you in your darkest of times. I can’t forgive you three for what has happened in the past but I can say, I don’t want to keep hating you three. I want better for Alex, Esme and myself. I want my daughter to grow up never feeling like she just doesn’t belong. I want her to grow up surrounded by family and if you three are willing to do that, then we can move forward from all of this but only if you decide.”
Declan looked to Lena “We are willing to do that honey, I’m sorry you felt like we weren’t. We want to make things right Lena. We never wanted to hurt you Lena and We will try to make up for it. I promise, please just give us a chance?”
Lena nodded looking at her grandfather “I’m going to but sometimes I’m going to need time for me too.” Declan just nodded before he heard Esme.
Esme ran over to the screen door and yelled “Mommy! It’s time to eat! Come on!” She giggled looking at Lena.
Lena smiled and stood up “I guess we are being summoned to dinner.” Declan stood up with Lena and then they walked in, Lena stopped to swoop Esme up into her arms as they went to the table to sit down for dinner.
Notes:
I will be taking more of a break from this for a while! I love this story but I could have my baby in as early as 3 weeks so I'm trying to keep my focus on him! I will try to update between preparation for him! I'm sorry It's taken over a month to reply!
Chapter 14: Chapter 14:
Chapter Text
A/N: I’m sorry it's been so long since I updated! My baby is now almost 2 and is becoming more independent so hopefully this will help me be able to start updating again. This will be short but hopefully everyone is still interested. I promise I didn't forget! I’m really wanting to get back into writing! If you have stuck with me since my last update, thank you.
Esme smiled as she saw her mommy walk into the kitchen, Esme smiled as she wrapped her arms around Lena. “Mommy, Momma said we can bake cookies after we eat.”
Lena giggled and kissed Esme “Yes baby, we will.”
As the evening went on Lena, Amelia and Elizabeth baked and began to mend their relationship while Declan, Alex, and Esme played. When Esme started getting sleepy Alex and Lena left Lena’s grandparents and drove home. Lena seemed to be more relaxed then she had been after their first meeting with the Kieran’s in Ireland.
Once Esme was bathed, and in bed Lena smiled as she sat with Alex in the living room. Lena was laid back with Alex rubbing her feet. Alex looked at Lena “You seem more relaxed after spending time with them tonight.”
Lena nodded “I am, I think that with them showing effort and then being able to talk to my grandfather and seeing how happy Esme is, this is what I always dreamed of. I’m still struggling but not like I was.”
Alex smiled as she listened to her fiancee “I’m really happy for you Lena. Now that it’s just us, maybe we should start thinking about moving the wedding up. I know you wanted to get married next spring but I’m thinking maybe we can get married in December.”
Lena smiled as she nodded “I think that is an amazing idea, I really can’t wait to be your wife and honestly the faster we get married the happier I will be. We will go look at the house this weekend and if we want it we can put an offer up and hopefully move into it soon. Let's go to bed and maybe we can go look at the house tomorrow.”
Alex nodded and once she made sure that Lena wasn't hiding how she was feeling, the couple went to bed, anxious about what the following day was going to bring.
Chapter 15: Chapter 15: A New beginning
Chapter Text
The next morning arrived with the soft warmth of sunlight spilling through the curtains. Lena stirred awake, the peaceful quiet of the early hours filling the room. She smiled as she felt Alex's arm around her, still nestled close.
"Morning," Alex whispered groggily, her voice low and warm.
Lena shifted slightly, brushing a strand of hair away from Alex's face. "Morning, love. You sleep okay?"
Alex yawned and nodded, her eyes fluttering open. "I did, surprisingly. I was a little nervous about today, but now I just feel… excited." She smiled, sitting up and stretching. "So, are we really doing this? Looking at the house today?"
Lena sat up beside her, her heart racing with a mix of excitement and nerves. "Yeah. I think it’s time. I can’t wait to see it in person, to start planning our future. I know we’ve talked about it for a while, but now that we’re making it real, it feels… different. In a good way."
Alex smiled, her eyes shining with love and support. "I think it's the perfect next step for us. We’ve been through so much already, and this house, it feels like it's the beginning of something bigger. Something we’ve always wanted."
Lena leaned in and kissed her softly. "I couldn’t agree more."
After a quiet breakfast, the two women bundled up for the chilly winter morning, Esme still snoozing peacefully in her room. They quickly gathered their things and made their way to the house, their excitement palpable.
The drive was filled with chatter about what their life would look like in the new home. Alex suggested a bigger kitchen for Lena to bake in and a cozy reading nook by the window, while Lena pictured the small garden she’d want to plant for Esme.
When they finally pulled up in front of the house, Lena felt a rush of emotions. The house was everything they’d dreamed of. It wasn’t too big, but it had just enough space for the three of them, with room to grow.
“This is it,” Lena whispered, gazing up at the warm, brick exterior. "This could be our home."
Alex grinned, squeezing Lena’s hand. "Let’s go see if it feels just as right inside."
They stepped into the house, the scent of fresh paint and polished wood floors greeting them. The spacious living room opened up into a kitchen that seemed to call to Lena immediately. She could picture herself standing there, baking cookies with Esme, just as they had talked about the night before.
The house had an inviting, comfortable feel, with plenty of light streaming through the windows and an open layout that made it easy to imagine their family there. There was even a small, fenced-in backyard—perfect for a little garden and a swing set for Esme.
Lena and Alex took their time exploring each room, imagining their future. They talked about how they would decorate, where they’d put Esme’s toys, and what colors they would paint the walls. The possibilities felt endless.
“This place is perfect, Lena,” Alex said softly, her voice full of certainty. "It’s just right for us."
Lena nodded, feeling her heart swell. “It really is. It’s not just the house—it’s the life we’re going to build here. I can see it all already."
They walked through the house once more, the final tour before they made their decision. As they stood in the living room, looking out at the backyard, Alex turned to Lena, her eyes full of love.
"I think we should make an offer," Alex said, her voice firm but filled with excitement. "I want this to be our home."
Lena smiled, her heart full. "I couldn’t agree more. Let’s make it official."
That afternoon, after meeting with the real estate agent and agreeing to put in an offer, Lena and Alex sat in their car, their hands intertwined.
“It feels surreal, doesn’t it?” Lena said, her voice soft.
“Yeah, but it feels right. I know this is the next step. And I can’t wait to spend every day with you and Esme here,” Alex said, squeezing Lena’s hand.
The drive home was quiet, but the air between them buzzed with anticipation. They were ready for this. Ready for the house, ready for the wedding, ready for the future they would build together.
When they arrived home, Esme was awake and waiting for them, her big blue eyes full of energy. She rushed to them as soon as they stepped inside, wrapping her arms around both of their legs.
“Mommy, Mommy! What’s the house like? Is it nice?” Esme asked excitedly.
Lena smiled down at her daughter, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear. “It’s beautiful, sweetheart. We’re going to make it our home.”
Esme’s eyes lit up. “Can I have my own room?”
Lena laughed, kneeling down to Esme’s level. “Of course, baby. You’ll have your own room, and we’ll decorate it however you want. How does that sound?”
Esme clapped her hands with excitement. “Yay! I’m going to put all my toys in there!”
Alex chuckled softly, wrapping her arm around Lena. “I think it’s going to be perfect.”
Later that evening, after dinner, the three of them curled up on the couch together. Lena leaned back, content in the warmth of the moment, her heart full of love for her family.
Alex rested her hand on Lena’s, her thumb gently rubbing over her knuckles. "So, we’re really doing this. A house, a wedding... we’re building a life."
Lena looked over at Alex, her heart swelling with affection. “We really are. And I can’t wait to do it all with you.”
Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Home
Summary:
Double Chapters! after being gone for so long
Chapter Text
The days following their visit to the house were filled with anticipation. Every time Lena and Alex spoke about it, their excitement grew—planning the wedding, imagining their future in that home, and thinking about all the new memories they would create. The offer they had put in was accepted, and everything seemed to be falling into place.
Lena stood in front of her mirror, carefully brushing her hair. The wedding was now only a few weeks away, and she was finding herself a little overwhelmed. The house was about to be theirs, and there were still so many details to work out—decorations, moving, and of course, the new routines they’d need to establish once they were settled.
Alex walked into the room, giving Lena a soft smile. "How's my beautiful fiancée this morning?" she asked, her voice warm and loving.
Lena turned to her, a slight frown on her face. "I’m good, just feeling a little... overwhelmed, I guess. There’s so much happening all at once. The house, the wedding... it’s a lot to juggle."
Alex approached her, standing behind her and wrapping her arms around Lena's waist. "I get it, love. But remember, we’re in this together. We’ve got each other through it all. We’re creating something amazing, and we’re going to get through it, step by step."
Lena smiled softly, leaning back into Alex’s embrace. "I know. You’re right. I just want everything to be perfect. For Esme, for us."
Alex kissed her neck gently. "It will be. It already is. We’re building our dream life together. And there’s no rush. We have time, we have each other, and we’ll take it one day at a time."
Lena closed her eyes for a moment, letting Alex's comforting words settle over her. She had always dreamed of this—of a home, of a family, of love. And now it was all within reach.
As they prepared to head out to finalize the paperwork for the house, Lena caught herself thinking about all the memories she wanted to make there. She imagined family dinners around the table, lazy Sunday mornings spent on the couch, and late-night talks with Alex, just enjoying each other’s company.
Esme, now full of excitement about her new room, had already started drawing up plans for her space, including a big bookshelf to hold all her favorite stories and a window seat where she could read. It warmed Lena’s heart to see her daughter so eager about the future.
That evening, after all the paperwork was finalized, Lena, Alex, and Esme celebrated with a simple but joyful dinner at home. As they sat around the table, Lena couldn't help but feel like everything was aligning perfectly.
"Do you think we’ll be ready to move in before the wedding?" Alex asked as she cut into her steak, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Lena nodded, glancing at Esme, who was happily digging into her meal. "I think we can make it work. We’ll have a few things to finish up before we can settle in fully, but it’ll be worth it."
The conversation shifted to wedding plans, and soon they were discussing everything from the flowers to the music. It felt good to finally have a clear picture of their future.
As the evening wound down and Esme was tucked into bed, Lena and Alex found themselves on the couch once more, holding each other close.
“Tonight felt like the first real step toward everything we’ve dreamed of,” Lena said softly, looking over at Alex. “It’s all coming together.”
Alex smiled, her fingers tracing Lena’s arm. “It is. And I can’t wait to see it all unfold. Our life, our family... all of it.”
Lena looked at Alex with a sense of peace. "I’ve waited a long time for this. I think... I think this is what I’ve always wanted, what we’ve both wanted."
Alex leaned in and kissed her gently, her lips soft and reassuring. "I’m so glad we found each other. I can't imagine my life without you, Lena. You and Esme are everything to me."
Lena's heart swelled. "And you’re everything to me, Alex."
They settled into the quiet of the evening, knowing that, no matter what came next, they had each other. As they looked forward to the future, they knew the house they were about to move into would be more than just four walls and a roof—it would be the place where their new life together truly began.
The wedding, the house, the life they had dreamed of—everything was falling into place. And nothing could have made them more grateful.
