The sun was just about to rise from above the horizon. It was a Saturday morning in the Gibbs household. Jethro was just about to turn over and go back to sleep when he became aware of little footsteps tottering over the floorboards and the dip as a weight pressed into the mattress next to him. Sleepily he opened his eyes to find a pair of bright blues eyes looking back at him.

“It’s not time to wake up, Sweetheart,” his said, his voice husky with sleep.

“Can we make breakfast for Mommy?” the little girl asked, her eyes still open wide, pleading with her father.

“Mommy’s not back for a few hours yet. If we make it now, it will be spoiled by the time she gets to eat it.”

What Jethro didn’t have the heart to tell his little girl was that he was exhausted and while he wanted more than anything to get a post-nightshift breakfast ready for his wife, his working week had involved very little sleep and if he didn’t sleep now, he’d not be able to enjoy spending the day with his daughter – something that had kept him going all week.

“But can we later?”

“No promises, sweetie. We both need to sleep so we can go have fun later.”

Even in the low light, he could see the pout on the girl, he pulled her in to a hug and held her gently until they both fell back asleep.

The sun was streaming in through the gap in the curtains, Jethro opened his eyes, realising immediately that his daughter was no longer cocooned in his arms. He could smell cooking and his first horrified thought was that she had gone to cook breakfast on her own, he bolted to the top of the stairs when he heard his wife’s voice. This calmed him instantly and he walked steadily down the stairs.

“Hiya Daddy!” she little girl chirped from the kitchen.

Gibbs smiled as he walked closer and found her making pancakes with her mom. He walked up behind his wife, putting his hands on her hips as he placed a kiss on her cheek.

“Hmm, think I was meant to be doing this for you,” he admitted.

“Well, that’s crazy. You’ve not slept all week. I told Little Miss Bouncy here that it was a much better idea if we made coffee and pancakes for Daddy, so he’s got lots of energy for taking her out today while Mommy sleeps.”

Jethro smiled, placing a kiss on her neck, pulling her closer to him.

“You have all the best ideas, my love.”
