Chapter Text
After what seemed to be the most extended summer that Sawamura and the Seidou team had encountered, they finally got the chance to be the champions of Kōshien. The match between Seidou and Komadai was intense. Both teams fought with the same strategy of using pitcher relay. It took three extra innings for the game to end finally. Sawamura pitched for the last five innings while Miyuki played as the catcher for the entire game. Sawamura was itching to stand and throw on the mound while watching at the bullpen. And when he finally did, all he could think of was this would be the final official game he'll be playing with Miyuki and the other third-years. The score was 1-1 during the substitution, but that didn't bother him. He had complete trust that they'd be able to score another run. Likewise, he had complete faith that they'd be able to prevent Komadai from scoring another run.
They've been waiting for this day. The days they spent playing baseball were finally rewarded. With every match they won, the chance to play and stand on the field with his teammates remained. In the last five innings, Sawamura couldn't help but think that this would be the final game. After this, there'll be no official matches for the third-year players. And when they finally won, Sawamura couldn't help but feel sad about the fact that the games had ended. To him, it felt like a dream. He'd never thought even once that he'd get to be the ace for a team that is strong enough to be at the Nationals. Back in middle school, all he could imagine was playing to his heart's content together with his friends. While it made him sad that he was the only one who got the chance to stand on the mound at Kōshien, he played with his first team in mind. He promised them that he'd bring them to Kōshien, and he managed to fulfill it.
He felt numb and couldn't move during their announcement as the Kōshien's team champion. He couldn't even hear all the cheers coming from the stand. All he could think of was that his dream had ended. And now, his teammates had gathered around him and had woken him up. They won at last, but that also meant that his senpai could no longer play with them for the upcoming Fall Tournament - not even on the following seasons to come. Sawamura was happy. He was. But at the same time, he couldn't help but feel sad that he wouldn't be able to play with Miyuki and the others. No more yells from Zono. No more hyena laugh coming from Kuramochi. No more encouragement from Kawakami, who was always ready to back them up. No more Shirasu laser and Asou's super-fast ball pickup when the ball's reaching the outfield.
But that's just high school baseball is. So Sawamura will take what he learned from his senpai and make sure to pass it on to his kouhai. It may be sad, but this is not yet the end. Because with every ending comes a new beginning. He didn't expect that he'd be chosen as the team's new captain.
After the summer tournament, Coach Kataoka informed Miyuki and his two vice-captains to select the next captain. The coach already had someone in mind but still requested their opinion. They conducted a meeting two days after winning Senbatsu. However, the three third-year students had their meeting already. Zono and Miyuki elected Sawamura to be the team's new captain. Kuramochi, however, was reluctant to agree.
"What seemed to be the problem, Kuramochi?" Zono asked nonchalantly. "You've witnessed how Sawamura lead the team splendidly during our match with Seihou even without Miyuki. He improved at an alarming rate during the Summer tournament. He wasn't a genius pitcher, yet he defeated Amahisa and even Narumiya. He knows what it means to be weak, so he can sympathize with his teammates who are struggling. I think Sawamura will be an even better captain compared to this guy."
"Why thank you," Miyuki replied in annoyance as Zono pointed his finger at him.
Kuramochi let out a deep sigh before speaking.
"I understand what you're trying to say. But don't you think it would be too much burden to bear for Sawamura to be the captain and ace of the team simultaneously? Don't get me wrong. I know he's capable of being the captain. He can lead the team with his spirit and passion alone. I'm just worried he might push himself too much and end up injuring himself," Kuramochi explained his sentiments as he remembered Chris' injury.
"I was chosen as captain despite being the main catcher and the cleanup batter. I may not be that good at it, but I managed somehow. I think Sawamura will do just fine," Miyuki spoke.
"Well, that's..."
"And besides, that's the reason why we're electing vice-captains as well, right?" Miyuki added. "We just need to choose the right people who can stop Sawamura when he's pushing himself too much - people who will help him lead the team. Just like what you guys did when I was the captain."
Kuramochi and Zono couldn't help but be surprised at Miyuki's honesty; they almost thought an angel possessed him. Kuramochi then cleared his throat before speaking once more.
"Okay. If that's what you think, then I have no choice but to agree, do I?" Kuramochi hesitantly replied as he scratched the back of his head.
"As for the vice-captain position, I nominate Kanemaru and Toujou," Zono exclaimed as soon as Kuramochi agreed with their choice for captain's position.
"Hmm. Those two are not a bad option, but I wanted Furuya to be vice-captain," Miyuki said while looking at his notes.
Kuramochi, who hasn't provided his opinion yet, looked at the two. He was okay with either of the three, so he listened to their reasons first.
"Why Kanemaru and Toujou?"
"I think it would be best to select vice-captains that are batters and fielders at the same time, just like with our last team. Besides, Sawamura has Okumura and Furuya to help him with the catchers and pitchers. We even have Yui," Zono explained.
"Well, you certainly got the point there," Miyuki interjected as he pondered Zono's statements.
"If you'd ask me, I think it's better for Furuya if we let him be. I'm not saying he's not capable of leading the team, but I prefer him to play to his heart's content without thinking of his position. He can continue aiming for the ace position, of course. But when I saw him play during the Summer tournament going all out at the very beginning until the very end, I realized that that's how he should be. By playing like that, he can inspire our teammates too. Unfortunately, I'm not sure when it started, but at some point, he became too burdened by the ace's number and even got himself injured."
"I agree," Kuramochi replied. "He did great during Spring Koshien, but his performance was even better during the Summer tournament. It feels like watching a bird who finally got out of the cage and roared towards the sky. He doesn't have to get the number 1 jersey to be the ace. At least for me, Sawamura and Furuya are both the team's aces. Without either of them, our team wouldn't have won."
Miyuki just smiled at Zono and Kuramochi's statement. At least, when it comes to this department, he really can't beat the two. For this reason, they got selected as vice-captains. They have something that Miyuki lacks, and he's afraid he may never have. But that's just how a team should be. They make up for each other's weaknesses.
"Well, I guess that's it for our meeting," Miyuki finally spoke as he stood to exit the room.
"Eh? It's over??" Zono blurted out. "We haven't finalized the vice-captain position yet!"
"Kanemaru and Toujou, right?" Miyuki replied without a second's hesitation as he looked back at the two for confirmation.
"O-Ohh," the two agreed in unison.
They thought that Miyuki would object at some point, but he accepted their opinion so readily they couldn't help but be surprised.
And now, standing in front of the coaching staff - ready to provide the name of the players they selected as captain and vice-captains.
"We selected Sawamura as the captain, Kanemaru and Toujou as vice-captains," Miyuki spoke, to which the two simply nodded.
Coach Kataoka did not say anything. He just closed his eyes, but he was smiling slightly. Coach Ochiai and Oota, on the other hand, were a bit surprised while Takashima pushed her glasses up her nose to hide her triumphant smile. As someone who scouted Sawamura, she couldn't help but be proud. At least when it comes to leading the team, Takashima knew Sawamura was capable enough. Because she witnessed how the boy led a team so weak, they didn't even win a single match, and yet they continued to give their all until the game ended. By simply looking, she knew that his teammates back then were new to the sport, and yet, she felt their team's unwavering spirit, and that's because of the pitcher that was standing on the mound.
After a moment of silence, Coach Kataoka finally spoke. "It's decided then. I will formally declare Sawamura as Seidou's new captain. The vice-captains will be Kominato and Kanemaru."
The three students just smiled. But then, Miyuki decided to ask Coach Kataoka what the other two couldn't ask.
"You already have someone in mind even before we provided our suggestions, isn't it, Coach?"
"I did," the coach confirmed, to which the other two students were utterly surprised.
Because right now, there are two possible reasons why Coach Kataoka decided to go with their options. He had the same person in mind for the captain and vice-captain positions. He had a different choice but decided to agree with their suggestion.
"I did have someone in mind, but it wouldn't be enough if the previous captain and vice-captains end up choosing a different person, right?" Coach Kataoka replied with a smirk.
Takashima couldn't help but think how cunning Coach Kataoka could be. Last year had been different when it came to selecting the next captain. Back then, he had already decided that Miyuki would be the captain. Then, add the fact that Yuuki also suggested the same person. But this time was different. He knew that the other coaching staff might disagree, so he let the current captain and vice-captains decide as well. He probably had confidence that they'd choose Sawamura as well to be the team's next captain. As for Takashima, she couldn't agree more. As someone who witnessed the boy lead his team during his middle school year, she knew he would be capable. Back then, he was only a diamond in the rough, but now, he's a fully pledged pitcher who can lead a strong team and make his team even stronger through his pitching.
The day after they finalized the new captain and vice-captains, Coach Kataoka asked Miyuki for Sawamura, Toujou, and Kanemaru to be called. As usual, Sawamura was lively and loud early in the morning as he tried to wake Furuya from his deep slumber.
"Furuya! Stop sleeping while eating your breakfast!" Sawamura's shout can be heard across the room as everyone busied themselves with their breakfast.
"You're still so noisy as ever, Sawamura," Miyuki commented as he sat in front of the boy.
"Cap! That's because this guy's been slacking off! It's not even the start of practice yet, and he's sleeping already. Geez!"
Miyuki just snickered. He wondered how the boy would react when the time came that he'd be informed that he would be the next captain. Additionally, he might miss how the boy always calls him 'cap.' Although he wouldn't admit it to the boy himself.
"Oh, by the way, Sawamura," Miyuki started to which Sawamura stopped his rumbling towards Furuya.
"Yes, Cap?"
"Coach Kataoka wants you to go to his office after breakfast," Miyuki continued.
"Okay, Cap. I'll go there as fast as I can as soon as I finish breakfast," Sawamura saluted.
"Also, bring Toujou and Kanemaru with you," Miyuki added.
Kanemaru and Toujou, sitting at the same table, heard Miyuki and simply nodded. Although, they couldn't help but be curious why they were being called.
Their question was answered once they arrived at the coach's office.
"Thank you for taking the time to come here," Coach Kataoka began speaking as soon as the students arrived at his office. "You must be wondering why I called you here."
Sawamura, Kanemaru, and Toujou simply nodded, unsure what to say. On the other hand, Miyuki, Kuramochi, and Zono remained silent as they let their coach do the honor of announcing the new captain and vice-captains. Oota, Takashima, and Coach Ochiai were there too.
"As you may know, Miyuki and the rest of the third-year players will no longer be playing for the upcoming Fall Tournament," the coach started. "To prepare for the next tournament, we need to select the new leaders of this team. And we have decided for you to be the one to lead the team."
The three second-years were surprised. They remained silent, so Coach Kataoka decided to continue speaking.
"Sawamura Eijun, starting today, you will be the new captain of Seidou," Kataoka announced.
Sawamura was taken aback, but Toujou and Kanemaru simply smiled. If there's someone who can replace Miyuki as the captain, that would undoubtedly be Sawamura. He's already proven himself many times.
"Kanemaru and Toujou, I want you to support Sawamura as the new vice-captains of the team," the coach added.
"Yes, sir!" the two replied in unison.
After the announcement, Sawamura finally found his voice and decided to speak.
"But, boss! Are you sure it's okay for me to be the captain? I'm not even sure if I can live up to your expectations," Sawamura spoke hesitantly as he looked at the ground.
Miyuki and Zono were surprised. They thought that Sawamura would immediately accept it and let out his typical laugh as he promised to fulfill his duty just like how he usually would. However, Kuramochi couldn't help but get worried.
"Sawamura," Toujou said as he placed his hand on Sawamura's back. "I also think that you'd be the right person for the position."
"You may be an idiot, but you're more than capable when it comes to leading the team. Have more confidence," Kanemaru awkwardly added as he scratched the back of his neck. "Geez. You should just be honest and accept it willingly. Why do you tend to be humble at the wrong place and at the wrong time? This isn't like you at all."
"Toujou, Kanemaru! You guys!"
Sawamura was about to hug the two when Coach Kataoka cleared his throat to catch their attention.
"You don't have to do anything special, Sawamura. Leading by example, inspiring people through your spirit and passion, motivating your teammates through your hard work - you just need to play baseball like you always do," Coach Kataoka said with a smile.
"Well, if you find it too bothersome, you can just give up your position to someone else who'll be more capable than you," Miyuki added with a smirk as if to challenge Sawamura.
I was able to do it, so why can't you?
Message received. Sawamura was suddenly all fired, his eyes blazing.
"Fine! I'll do it. I'll be the captain! Challenge accepted, Cap! And I will do it a hundred times - no, I'll do it a thousand times better than you!" Sawamura retorted, to which Miyuki snickered in the background while Kuramochi tried to kick him in the butt with all his might.
"And Sawamura," the coach interrupted the battery's bickering. "Even if you're the captain now, you're still free to aim for the ace's position for this upcoming Fall tournament."
"Of course, Boss!" Sawamura replied. "There's no way I'll let anyone steal the number one jersey so easily."
Miyuki and the rest couldn't help but be amazed at the boy's unwavering spirit. But, right now, they wanted to see just how far Sawamura could go.
On that same day, Sawamura was announced as the captain in front of the whole team.
The Fall Tournament ended without a hitch. They reached the semi-finals but were defeated by Inashiro. Looking at it prospectively, they did well considering the loss of their third-year players. They knew which part they needed to work on to use the team's current strength with the results. Sawamura was still chosen as the ace, while Kuki and Asada were selected as relief pitchers. It was important that the two players also gained experience during the tournament. Seto played shortstop and leadoff batter. Okumura was the main catcher, but there were times that Yui played the position, especially when Furuya was playing on the mound. Takatsu finally managed to become a first-string member and got to play as the first baseman. Although, to be honest, he would've preferred shortstop, add to the fact that he had to face Kanemaru during plays as the current third baseman.
Kariba had decided to take on Nabe's duties and responsibilities. He knew that it would be impossible for him to be a first-string member with Okumura and Yui as catchers. So he decided to help the team by learning from Nabe to gather information from other schools. And even if he wasn't a first-string member, he's still the oldest catcher now, with Miyuki and Ono gone.
Miyuki continued his game-calling lessons even though he had already moved into the third-year dorm. Since he had already decided to become a professional baseball player after graduating high school. He only needed to prepare for the final exams, unlike the other third years who also needed to prepare for college entrance exams. Kuramochi was his new roommate. He couldn't help but complain every time Miyuki would conduct their discussions in their room. It annoyed him that Miyuki was having the time of his life teaching his fellow catchers and pitchers while he was struggling from studying.
From time to time, he would still practice playing catch with Sawamura. Right now, he finally managed to stabilize all his first 11 numbers while they were now trying other pitches that he could add to his repertoire in preparation for next year's Summer Tournament.
Everyone was able to accept their loss and decided to move forward. The most important thing was to be prepared for the next Summer Tournament. However, for Sawamura, he couldn't help but feel responsible for their loss. He promised Miyuki that he'd be a better captain, but he had failed him. He knew it would be inefficient to dwell on the past. But he couldn't help but doubt himself and think that maybe, he was not cut out to be the team's captain after all.
The Fall Tournament finally ended. Inashiro won the tournament. After their loss, Sawamura decided to watch the finals with the other first-string members and Kariba. They went on with their practice. Sawamura was still as loud as ever. He continued supporting his team like he always does. Even though he still had some doubts about whether he could lead the team or not, he didn't want others to feel anxious.
Weeks had passed. The team was busy preparing for the upcoming Jingu Tournament and the winter camp. But Sawamura's self-doubt and anxiety continued to grow.
The winter break was almost near. One day, during their lunch break, Sawamura noticed one of his female classmates seemed to be bothered by something. Maybe because he could sympathize with her, he couldn't help but ask what was happening.
"Hey, Akane. You seemed out of it these past few days. Is something bothering you?" Sawamura asked when they were assigned cleaning duties for the day.
"Eh? What're you talking about, Sawamura-kun?" Akane replied, slightly surprised that the most oblivious person she ever knew would notice that something was wrong.
"I'm not sure but, you've been quiet these days. You've been turning down our classmates' invitations when you're the one who typically initiates to go somewhere after classes," Sawamura responded.
Akane was surprised at how observant Sawamura could be that she remained quiet for a while and just kept looking at Sawamura.
"I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean to pry! I was just concerned, is all," Sawamura started explaining upon noticing how her female classmate suddenly turned silent. "If nothing is bothering you or if something was indeed bothering you, there's no need to tell me if you don't feel like it."
Sawamura laughed awkwardly and simply continued cleaning the room. Akane smiled as soon as Sawamura turned his back and sat on a chair as she looked outside the window.
"Thanks for asking, Sawamura-kun," Akane said as she gently closed her eyes. "To be honest, I thought I was doing fairly well. I just never thought you, of all people, would notice that something's bothering me."
"O-Oh. I see," Sawamura replied as he looked back once again at his classmate. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to talk about it."
Akane shook her head as she smiled once more then looked at Sawamura.
"If it's you, then I guess I wouldn't mind telling you."
"A-Are you sure?"
"I have a feeling that if it's you, you won't judge me at all. I just got this impression that you're the type of person to treat others equally."
"Well, thanks," Sawamura replied as he blushed like an idiot.
"But you have to promise me one thing," Akane continued.
"What is it?"
"You have to tell me what's been bothering you these past few weeks as well."
"Eh?"
"You think I wouldn't notice? I may not look like it, but I'm pretty good at observing other people, you know."
Sawamura was surprised because he thought he was doing an excellent job hiding his problems. He didn't want to bother anyone, especially his team, so he decided to keep it all in.
"Promise?" Akane asked as she reached out her pinky finger.
The pitcher then realized that it might be best to share his worries with someone outside the team. If it's just talking about it, he guessed it would be fine. Sawamura then locked his pinky finger to Akane's as he smiled hesitantly.
Akane started sharing her worries as soon as they finished cleaning the room. Sawamura sat on the floor as he paid full attention to what his classmate had to say.
"You see, I fell in love with a man slightly older than me. He's in college and studying at a university right now," Akane began. "We've been dating for almost a year now, but my parents are not aware of our relationship."
"O-Oh. I see," Sawamura reacted, slightly blushing at the topic. "Are you sure it's okay for you to tell me these things?? It's not too late to stop."
Sawamura was slightly panicking now. He'd never been in a relationship before. And ever since he started playing baseball, it's all he could ever think of. So, in a nutshell, he might not be the best person to talk to when it comes to relationship matters.
Akane only laughed at Sawamura's reaction.
"It's okay, Sawamura-kun," Akane replied. "As I said, if it's you, then I wouldn't mind telling you. And I think hearing someone's perspective who hasn't been in a relationship would be better."
"O-Okay, thank you for trusting me," Sawamura whispered, unable to look at her classmate. "I promise I won't tell this to anyone."
Akane continued with her story.
"My boyfriend wanted to introduce himself to my family and to let them know that he was sincere about me," Akane started. "But I was the one who was hesitating. To be honest, I was scared. I was scared that my parents would reject me and my relationship."
"But that's understandable! Of course, you'd be scared! While it's true that you love your boyfriend, you also love your parents. You wanted to meet their expectations, and you don't want them disappointed. I honestly think that there's nothing wrong with that," Sawamura spoke as he clenched his fist tightly.
He had been struggling for quite a while now. He couldn't help but feel the same way as Akane does. They might be in a different situation now, but it somehow felt familiar. He wanted to do better and meet the team's expectations. They've helped him grow as a player, and he wanted to help the team as much as he could. But with his current situation, he couldn't help but feel like his strength wasn't enough.
"Thank you, Sawamura-kun," Akane smiled as tears streak down her face. "But that's not the end of it, though."
Sawamura looked at Akane as if urging her to continue.
"You see, Sawamura-kun," Akane spoke once more as she gathered her strength to tell Sawamura what's been bothering her all this time. "I'm pregnant. And I don't know how to tell my parents and my boyfriend about it."
Akane, unable to hold her tears back, covered her face with her hands as she started crying. Meanwhile, Sawamura was at a loss and didn't know what to do. The first thing he thought of was to pull out his handkerchief and hand it to the girl. She noticed Sawamura's action and reached for the handkerchief as she continued sobbing. And then, he heard him speak once more.
"What is it that you want, then?" Sawamura asked in a serious tone as he gently grasped her shoulders.
Sawamura's gaze was so intense and sincere that Akane couldn't look away.
"What do you want to do from now on? If you've been struggling about it, then that means that you wanted to keep the baby, right?" Sawamura asked to which Akane just nodded.
"Then, go through with it! No matter the consequences, stand your ground! If people ever judge you, don't ever let that bring you down! Who cares if you made a mistake in the past? All you did was fall in love. Who cares if you're doing the right thing or not? You just have to believe in what you have decided to do!" Sawamura added as tears almost started forming on the corner of his eyes.
Sawamura's grasp tightened as he looked down to hide his face.
"You're strong, Akane. You are strong," Sawamura continued. "You're much stronger than me. You've been facing this situation all alone, haven't you? And yet you didn't run away from it! At least to me, that just proves your strength and resolve. So be proud of yourself!"
She didn't realize how much pain she was in until she had said those words to someone. But, at the same time, she didn't know how much she wanted to hear someone tell her that what she was doing was right. Tears continued falling like a river as she looked at Sawamura.
"Do you think it's okay for me to keep the baby?"
"Yes."
"Even if I caused other people inconvenience?"
"Yeah."
"Even if people ended up hating me?"
"At least for me, I won't," Sawamura beamed in response.
Akane continued bawling as she ended up hugging Sawamura. She was trembling terribly. It must've taken all her courage to tell Sawamura what she's been going through. The boy just smiled as he kept drawing circles on her back as if to comfort her.
It took a while for Akane to calm down finally. Then, when Sawamura noticed that his classmate had already stopped crying, he spoke once more.
"And based on what you said about your boyfriend, I think he'll be happy instead of feeling bothered about the baby. He seemed to be sincere about your relationship, so why don't you try telling him about it, for now?"
Akane smiled at the thought of his boyfriend and nodded. "Thanks, Sawamura-kun. I'll tell him as soon as I can."
Sawamura smiled and ruffled the girl's hair.
"If you're so scared of facing your family alone, then ask your boyfriend for help," Sawamura added and then blushed slightly at what he's about to say next. "I mean, if I were your boyfriend, I would be happy if you would rely on me and ask me for help. Because that means I'm reliable, right?"
Akane giggled at the thought of Sawamura having a girlfriend.
"Ahh! You just laughed at me, didn't you?"
"Sorry, I didn't mean to make fun of you," Akane replied while still laughing. "I was just thinking that whoever will be your lover in the future would be very lucky."
"O-Oh. Thanks," Sawamura whispered as he tried to hide his embarrassment.
And then a thought suddenly crossed his mind. It's okay to rely on his friends. It's okay to ask for help. Because if he were in his friend's position, he would be happy if he would be relied on. Just like how he wanted his teammates to depend on him, his teammates wanted him to rely on them. Sawamura couldn't help but feel stupid. He had been the one to tell Azuma back then that a person can't play baseball on his own. And here he was, feeling responsible for the team's loss when no one even blamed him for that. The players knew that they were still lacking one way or another, trying their best to address that.
His thoughts were suddenly interrupted when Akane called his name.
"Sawamura-kun, are you okay?"
"Oh, yeah. I'm fine," Sawamura replied as he tried to laugh it off.
"So, what was bothering you?"
"Huh?"
"You promised you'll tell me your worries too. So spit it out," Akane said as she placed her arms across her chest.
"Well, that's..." Sawamura was already hesitating to share because his troubles seemed petty compared to Akane's. "I'm fine now. It's nothing."
"Sawamura-kun, do you intend to break your promise with me?"
"Of course not! That's not my intention at all! How shall I say it?" Sawamura spoke in panic as he flailed his arms around. "Hearing your worries somehow helped me as well. So I think I'll be fine now."
"It's alright, Sawamura-kun. I'll listen anyway," Akane said. "And besides, we already made a promise, so please tell me what's bothering you too, or rather, what bothered you if you seem so convinced that you're fine now."
Sawamura then remembered that he had promised Akane that he'd tell her what had been worrying him all this time. It would be shameful if he would back down now.
"You know how I've recently become the team's captain, right?"
"Of course, congratulations on that, by the way," Akane smiled in response.
"Well, to be honest, I'm not sure if I deserve to be the captain of the team," Sawamura replied in a gentle tone. "I thought just playing with all I've got would be good enough to lead the team, but it seems I was wrong. I've been losing my confidence these days. This self-doubt has been eating on me, and I couldn't seem to get out of it. I wanted to tell Harucchi or Kanemaru that I'm not doing fine. I wanted to ask for help, but I don't know if that's the right thing to do. I'm the team's captain now. I'm not supposed to be showing them that I'm weak."
Akane couldn't help but be surprised. She only knew the enthusiastic side of Sawamura that she never thought that he could feel such negative feelings too. He was always loud and full of energy that she felt that the boy had no worries. Now she realized that behind those smiles hide an ordinary boy who can feel helpless at times.
"But it's okay now. While talking to you, I realized a lot of things." Sawamura added. "I realized it's okay to feel weak from time to time. It's okay to feel like I wanted to give up. It's okay to cry my heart out until no more tears come out. It's okay to doubt myself sometimes. But you know what, amidst all those negative feelings I'm experiencing right now, it's okay to admit that I'm not doing fine. Most of all, it's okay to ask for help if I feel like I couldn't recover on my own - to reach out to them, not as my teammates, but as my friends. I think they would be happier if I relied on them."
"I guess I was too caught up in trying to meet their expectations that I lost sight of what it truly means to be a captain and an ace. I was happy when they chose me to be the captain. I was happy when Miyuki chose me as the captain. He never really praises me, you know? That stingy bastard," Sawamura went on but frowned slightly at the thought of his former captain. "I joined Seidou because of him. I wanted to know how far I could go if he were my catcher. And it's also thanks to him that I came this far. So if he decided to leave the team to me as the new captain, I felt like he had somehow already acknowledged me. Although, I think he'd never say that straight to my face."
The pitcher just smiled bitterly at the thought. But, on the other hand, Akane couldn't help but be amazed at Sawamura's strength. Sadly, the boy hasn't even realized how amazing a person he was.
"Did you know, Sawamura-kun? It takes great strength to admit that you're weak," Akane started as she looked gently at Sawamura. "But it takes even more strength to overcome your weakness. And that's what you're doing right now."
"Is that so?" Sawamura finally smiled a genuine smile as he scratched his nose while blushing.
He looked as if a significant burden had been lifted off his heart. And Akane somehow felt the same. If anything, she was glad she could talk to Sawamura like this.
"I'll talk to my boyfriend today and to my parents. I'll apologize for causing them trouble, but I will not back down on my decision, no matter what happens."
Sawamura beamed in response and said, "I wish from the bottom of my heart that things will work out for you."
That night, Sawamura was finally able to get some good sleep.
The next day, during lunch break, Sawamura saw Akane walking across the corridor while carrying a bunch of notebooks. As soon as he remembered that Akane was pregnant, he dashed towards her as he tried to help her take the notes.
"Hey, you should've asked me for help with these notebooks," Sawamura spoke as soon as he took more than half of the load.
Akane laughed at how Sawamura's been doting at him lately.
"Geez. Sawamura-kun, I can handle this much," Akane replied but still indulged in Sawamura's meddling.
"It's better to be on the safe side," Sawamura whispered so at not to be heard.
"Okay, I understand. If that will make you feel at ease."
They continued walking towards the faculty room. Akane informed Sawamura that she had already spoken to his boyfriend and her parents. She told him how happy his boyfriend was and how he became more adamant about meeting her parents. On the other hand, her parents were shocked and cried at first—they scolder her for being irresponsible and not taking care of herself. Her father was not speaking to her, but her mother told her to give him some time to accept her current situation. It may not be the best outcome, but it's not that bad either. According to her, her boyfriend will be meeting her parents this weekend.
"I see. So that's what happened, huh? I'm glad it went fine," Sawamura commented upon hearing Akane's story.
"Yeah. And it's all thanks to you, Sawamura-kun," Akane replied with a smile.
"Oh, please. I didn't do anything at all. I just gave you a bit of advice," Sawamura vehemently denied.
"And it's because of your advice that I was able to move forward finally."
"Well, if you say so. You're welcome, I guess," Sawamura responded shyly.
As they were about to reach the top of the stairs, two students suddenly came rushing towards them and accidentally bumped Akane. The girl then lost her balance and was about to fall when Sawamura instinctively tried to catch her. At that time, the pitcher was only thinking of the baby's safety and nothing else. As he put his left foot one stair below, he felt a sudden pain as the entire weight of Akane pressed towards him. The next thing he knew, Akane was already on top of him as she tried to call his name.
"Sawamura-kun?? Sawamura-kun?? Are you alright? Please wake up!" Akane desperately called out to the boy lying on the ground.
"A-Akane? Are you okay?" Sawamura asked in a small voice.
"You idiot! That's my line!" Akane responded while still crying.
"I see. I'm glad you're fine," was all Sawamura could say as he finally lost consciousness.
A few minutes before the accident occurred, Miyuki was walking together with Kuramochi.
"Ugh. Why do I have to accompany you in searching for that idiot? If you want to talk to him, why not talk to him on your own?"
"Because he wouldn't listen even if I confront him. At least, if you're with me, he might listen attentively. You're his big bro after all," Miyuki replied teasingly.
"Huh? Who's the bother of that idiot now? We're just roommates! Oh, scratch that, former roommates," Kuramochi forcefully denied.
"Yeah. Yeah. Whatever you say, Mochi-kun."
"Stop calling me that. It's annoying."
Miyuki just kept on grinning as they continued walking towards Sawamura's room.
"So? What is it that you want to talk to him about?"
"Nothing much, really," Miyuki replied casually, not looking at Kuramochi. "I was just worried that the idiot might be feeling responsible for their loss during the Fall Tournament."
"Well, knowing that idiot . I'd say he does."
"All the more reason for me to talk to him. We're about to graduate. We can't leave him to his device if he'll keep on blaming himself every time our team losses. He'll die early if he keeps this up," Miyuki whined as he scratched the back of his head.
"Heh. It's surprising..."
"What is?"
"You, acting as a true senpai. I almost puked."
Miyuki was about to retort when he heard someone shout Sawamura's name.
"Quick! Call the school nurse! Sawamura fell on the stairs!! He's not waking up!"
Kuramochi happened to hear as well, but before he could stop Miyuki, he was already running towards the student shouting earlier. As soon as Miyuki knew where Sawamura was, he came running without even waiting for Kuramochi.
As soon as Miyuki saw the crowd, he immediately asked to give way for him, to which the students obeyed without hesitation. However, there was a girl who was sitting beside Sawamura. Looking closely, she was crying as she tried to stop the bleeding on the boy's head.
"What happened here?" Miyuki asked as he knelt beside the girl and checked Sawamura for further injuries.
"It's all my fault," Akane replied. "I'm the only one who's supposed to fall down the stairs, but Sawamura helped me, and he ended up getting injured instead."
He asked the girl to move aside for now and checked the extent of Sawamura's injury in his head. He then applied pressure on the pitcher's wound as he waited for the shortstop's arrival. He couldn't even remember how the hell he arrived faster than Kuramochi. As soon as his best friend arrived at the scene, he didn't waste any time informing the other of what to do next.
"Kuramochi, call an ambulance," Miyuki ordered, feeling annoyed at the fact that nobody even bothered calling for one. "As soon as you're done, call the coach and tell him about Sawamura."
What can a school nurse do? Judging by Sawamura's state, he needs to be sent to the hospital no matter how you look at it!
Kuramochi, upon hearing Miyuki's tone, immediately pulled out his phone from his pocket and started calling for an ambulance. Miyuki then checked Sawamura's arms and shoulders to check if it got injured during the fall. The boy seemed to be not responding. Next, he checked his legs and noticed the slight swelling on his left foot.
Shit. He might have sprained his ankle when he tried to prevent the girl from falling.
Miyuki gritted his teeth at the thought that this accident might prevent Sawamura from playing baseball. However, his thoughts were interrupted when he heard the siren outside the school.
I'm an idiot. This is not the time to be thinking about negative things.
Before standing up, Miyuki informed the girl to keep applying pressure on Sawamura's wound. The girl wiped her tears and simply nodded. Miyuki then ran towards the main entrance of the building to guide the paramedic to where Sawamura was. The commotion died down when the school nurse arrived with other faculty members. When Miyuki arrived with the medical staff, Coach Kataoka and Takashima had also arrived accompanied by Kuramochi. Sawamura was gently placed on a stretcher. Takashima volunteered to accompany him and asked Coach Kataoka to call his parents. The school nurse assisted Akane and asked if she had also incurred some injury.
As soon as Miyuki saw Sawamura looking so lifeless, he couldn't help but remember the memories of his mother. He wanted to be at the boy's side, and yet he couldn't move even a single step. Miyuki's thoughts kept wandering elsewhere when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"Miyuki, there's nothing we can do for now," Kuramochi reasoned out as he noticed his friend's weird behavior. "Let's just hope and pray that Sawamura will be fine."
Miyuki did not respond but simply looked at the ground where Sawamura was previously lying down. One cleaning staff was already wiping the remaining blood on the floor. Kuramochi was calling out to him, but he remained silent for a while.
"Oi! Miyuki! Snap out of it!" Kuramochi began shouting upon noticing that his voice was not reaching his friend. "Your hands. Make sure to wash it before going back to class."
He understood what Kuramochi was talking about as he looked at his hands and noticed the blood.
I see. This must have been that time when I was checking Sawamura's wound, huh?
Miyuki clenched his fist as he separated himself from Kuramochi. To be honest, he didn't want anyone to see him like this. He's just glad that Kuramochi was sensitive enough not to accompany him to the washroom.
The news about Sawamura's accident spread like wildfire. The entire baseball team was devastated by Sawamura's current condition, and none of them could focus on their practice. Asada was pulled out from training to prepare Sawamura's clothes if he needed to stay longer at the hospital. Haruichi informed his brother of what happened, and Ryousuke was sensible enough to let the other alumni members know.
It was almost time for dinner when Takashima and Coach Kataoka finally arrived. All members seemed determined not to eat for as long as they were not hearing any news about their ace and captain. Even some third-years were patiently waiting for an update at the cafeteria despite their busy schedule.
As soon as the coach noticed the gloomy atmosphere, he couldn't help but let out a deep sigh before breaking the news to the team.
"Sawamura suffered from a mild head injury and sprained his left ankle. For now, he's still under observation if ever there are other symptoms," Coach Kataoka started explaining. "Some of you may start visiting by tomorrow but make sure to go in small groups only. We wouldn't want to be disturbing the hospital and causing a fuzz."
The majority of the members couldn't help but relax that Sawamura's safe now.
"But to be on the safer side, Sawamura will be banned for practice for three weeks," Coach Kataoka added. "It's possible that he might not be allowed to join the Jingu Tournament. So I want everyone to practice with that possibility in mind. So, Kanemaru, you will be the captain for now."
"Yes, sir!" Kanemaru responded swiftly.
"And while it's good that all of you are worried about your teammate, going on a hunger strike is a bad idea," the coach reprimanded as he noticed that most of them were not eating properly at the moment. "Is this the team that Sawamura be returning to once he's fully recovered? Eat plenty of food and practice as hard as you can. That's the best thing you can do for now. No one will be allowed to step outside this room if you haven't consumed three bowls of rice."
"Yes, sir!" the whole team responded in unison.
While everyone was happy about the news, their previous captain was sulking on the side.
"Hyaha! What're you on about now? You heard the coach. He just needs to take a short break," Kuramochi spoke as soon as he noticed that Miyuki still seemed to be in a bad mood.
"That idiot. Just how careless could he be? Getting injured at a time like this," Miyuki said.
"Well, well. Doesn't this feel like déjà vu? Because last time I remembered, our captain was stupid enough to hide his injury so that he could play at the Finals?"
"Shut up, Kuramochi. Getting injured during a game is one thing, but getting injured outside the game is another!" Miyuki retorted. His aura was already fuming. "When that idiot arrives, I'll beat him to a pulp."
"Oi, your evil aura is oozing out, former captain, " Kuramochi couldn't help but sigh in response. "Knowing that guy, he probably acted out of instinct. Even if he didn't want to get injured himself, he probably couldn't help but get involved anyway. That's just his nature. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about it."
Miyuki let out a sigh at the thought. Kuramochi was right. But even so, he couldn't help but feel annoyed that he got hurt because he tried saving someone. To others, it might seem heroic. But for him, it just seems reckless and illogical. He's a baseball idiot through and through, so he can only care about baseball-related stuff. But that didn't seem to be the case for Sawamura.
Kuramochi, on the other hand, was getting annoyed as well with how Miyuki was acting. Clearly, he couldn't understand his feelings that well.
"Ugh. If you're so worried about that idiot, why don't you go visit him tomorrow! I'll even accompany you, for fuck's sake!" Kuramochi shouted in annoyance.
The other third-years couldn't help but listen to their usual bickering. None of them bothered to stop them, though, since this is already part of their everyday Seidou life.
"Huh?? I'm not worried about that idiot! I'm pissed off! Don't go projecting your feelings to other people! If you want to visit him, then go check him by yourself!"
Geez. This guy takes the cake. I didn't know he was this bad when handling his feelings.
"Shut up! You're pissed off because he did something reckless and got himself hurt in the process! That's what it means to be worried, you stupid, dumbass tanuki bastard!"
By the time Kuramochi finished saying his piece, they had already drawn everyone's attention. Nabe, unable to stop himself any further, suddenly burst out laughing.
"Eh? Nabe?' the two asked in unison.
Without hearing further explanation from Nabe, the rest of the team followed suit. Everyone was laughing now at their former captain and vice-captain.
"Sorry, Miyuki-kun. I knew you were bad at this department , but I didn't know it was this bad," Nabe mentioned as soon as he was done laughing at his captain.
"Huh? I don't know what you're talking about, Nabe-kun," Miyuki replied, trying to avoid the topic from being discussed any further.
"Give it up, Miyuki," Zono interjected. "You'll be visiting Sawamura tomorrow even if we have to drag you by force."
Kawakami, Shirasu, and Asou nodded. Kuramochi was already rolling his sleeves as if to let Miyuki know that he'd be the one to drag him if need be personally.
"I got it! I got it already! I just need to visit the idiot, right? Geez," Miyuki replied in annoyance as he scratched the back of his neck.
"Miyuki, it's fine to be honest with your feelings once in a while. You'll get bald shutting off your feelings like that all the time," Asou advised matter-of-factly.
Seto, on the other hand, was listening to their senpais talk. He couldn't help but compare their former captain with his best friend. He observed how agitated his friend was when they heard the news. They were eating lunch with Asada, Kuki, and Kagami. It was only for a second, but that tiny fraction of time was enough for Seto to notice how extremely worried the catcher was. Not long ago, Okumura told him that Sawamura might be blaming himself for their current loss and that he wanted to be of more help to his senpai as his catcher.
"Do you want to go visit Sawamura-senpai tomorrow?" Seto asked as soon as he remembered their previous conversation about their current ace and captain.
"I'll pass," Okumura replied after what seemed to be a long pause. "I'll visit him at a later time."
Okumura never mentioned his frustrations, but he can see it clear as day for Seto. He knew that Sawamura and Miyuki shared a deep bond, and he knew that Sawamura looked up to their previous captain no matter how much they fought all the time. And if there's someone that could help Sawamura recover from his current state of mind, that would be Miyuki. He's not there yet, but hopefully, he'll be able to stand by Sawamura's side on equal ground. For now, he has three bowls of rice to finish. Seto couldn't help but internally laugh as he saw Okumura eyeing the last two bowls of rice menacingly.
Meanwhile, Sawamura was busy having a row with his grandfather over the phone at the hospital. He knew how hardheaded his grandpa could be; he inherited the trait after all. So there he was at the hospital's garden, shouting with all his might while he sat comfortably in a wheelchair. The doctor strictly advised him not to put pressure on his ankle since it might worsen. So Sawamura had no choice but to stay put for now.
"And I keep on telling you that I'm fine! There's no need to go and visit me here in Tokyo! You'll just tire yourself out! And it's almost Christmas! You have a lot of things to do back there! So don't go dumping your work on other people!"
"Huh?? How dare you speak to your grandpa like that! And I keep on telling you that we're going to visit you no matter what! You're mother's been worried about you ever since she received the phone call from your coach. D'you have any idea how she almost fainted on the spot upon hearing the news, you stupid grandson of mine??"
Sawamura clenched his fist at the thought of worrying his parents like that. Most probably, his teammates were worried too. And Akane as well. The last thing he remembered was Akane calling his name and crying.
"I know I made all of you worried. And I truly apologize for that," Sawamura replied calmly this time. "But I'm fine now. I was advised to rest and not strain myself too much. My wound's all patched up. I've been only experiencing some slight headaches, but overall, I am fine. So please stop worrying already. I'll be fine. I'd be even worried if all of you has to go here in Tokyo just to visit me."
Sawamura's grandfather let out a deep sigh as he listened attentively to his grandson's plea.
"Are you sure you're going to be fine? You can't walk on your own right now, can you?"
"I'll be fine. The hospital was kind enough to lend me a wheelchair so I can move freely."
"There's nothing that can change your mind now, is there?"
"Nope," Sawamura beamed in response even though he knew his grandpa couldn't see him at that time.
"Okay, make sure you'll be home by Christmas. If you couldn't travel alone, you have to promise that you'll tell us, you hear me??"
"Yes. Yes. I promise. I'll call you once I'm released. But, geez. You worry too much."
"Of course, I'll worry! Is there something wrong about worrying for my grandson??"
"Okay. Okay. I understand! I'll hang up now. Say hi to mom and dad for me."
"Yeah, will do."
Once the call ended, Sawamura couldn't help but let out a deep sigh. Finally, he convinced his family not to visit him in Tokyo. As soon as he felt a sudden pain in his head, he decided to call it a night.
The next day, Chris visited him in the morning together with Takashima. He was so happy that his beloved senpai visited him despite his busy schedule.
"Shishou! Thank you for visiting this lowly Sawamura Eijun! Sorry, you had to go through the trouble of seeing me," Sawamura replied as soon as he saw Chris enter the room.
"Hello, Sawamura. How're you doing?" Chris asked as he placed a basket full of fruits on the table.
"Oh, other than my head injury and sprained ankle, I'm doing fine," Sawamura beamed in response.
"Geez. Just how reckless can you be?" Chris couldn't help but tousle the pitcher's already messy hair. "I almost had a heart attack when I received a call from Ryou saying that you fell off the stairs."
"You heard from Onii-san?"
"Yeah. He received an emergency call from his brother. Little Kominato was worried, you know, make sure to apologize for making them worry and thank them once they visit you, okay?"
"Yes, Shishou. I'm sorry that I ended up worrying all of you."
Chris knew that the younger boy had meant it. He didn't mean to worry everyone or anyone for that matter. There was an awkward silence after that. Fortunately, Takashima arrived after a few minutes.
"How are you doing, Sawamura-kun?"
"I'm doing fine now. Thanks, Takashima-san. I heard from one of the nurses that you were the one who accompanied me when they brought me to the hospital. And I apologize for causing trouble," Sawamura replied as he bowed slightly.
"You don't say, Sawamura-kun. But, really, I think I just lost ten years' worth of my life when I saw you lying lifeless on the ground," Takashima spoke as she guilt-tripped the boy.
"I-I truly apologize," Sawamura whispered, unable to look Takashima in the eyes.
"Well, so long as you're doing fine now. That's all that matters," she replied as she ruffled the boy's hair.
"Of course! I'll do my best to recover in no time!"
"Sawamura, you don't have to do your best. Just take a rest normally, please," Chris interjected, his head already aching at Sawamura's unlimited energy.
"Oh, by the way, Sawamura, when will your parents arrive here in Tokyo? Coach Kataoka called them yesterday already, didn't he? Did you call them back and inform them of your current situation? I'm sure they would want to hear personally from you."
"About that, I informed them not to visit me anymore. It's already winter break, so I can just go back to our home once I'm released, right?"
"What??"
"Eh?"
"Oh, Sawamura-kun. Why did you tell them not to visit you?"
"Is there something wrong?" Chris asked as soon as he noticed Takashima's odd reaction.
After Sawamura took his medicine, he finally managed to sleep. After that, Chris left the hospital with Takashima since they had classes. Around 10 AM, Ryousuke, Yuuki and Masuko visited Sawamura as well. However, the older Kominato was strictly forbidden by Chris to karate chop the poor pitcher in the head, so he had no choice but to settle for a double pinch on his cheeks.
"Ouch! Onii-shan! It hurtsh!!" Sawamura complained as Ryousuke pinched his cheeks as hard as he could.
"Serves you right, you idiot! That's for making my little brother cry," Ryousuke reprimanded with his hands on his waist.
"I'm so sorry. I promise I won't do it again," Sawamura replied as he rubbed his reddening cheeks.
"How's your ankle doing, Sawamura?" Yuuki couldn't help but ask upon noticing the support brace on his left foot.
"It'll take a while to heal, according to the doctor. So I'm not allowed to walk for at least a week to make sure it'll heal fully."
"That might be a bit frustrating on your part, but please be patient, Sawamura," Yuuki said with a smile as he ruffled the boy's hair.
"Uga."
"Thank you, Leader! Thank you, Masuko-senpai!"
"I've been wondering for a while now. Why does Masuko doesn't have a nickname?"
"Uga," was all Masuko could say as he noticed it too.
Oota, Nabe, Ono, Zono, Asou, and Seki were the next batch to visit. They were about to go to the hospital by walking during lunchtime since it wasn't that far when Oota saw them and invited them to join him in the car.
"Eh?? What're you all doing here?" Sawamura shouted in surprise as he saw the third-year students enter the room. "Don't tell me; you've been playing truant?? That's not good, senpai-tachi! So hurry up and go back to school."
"What shall we do, Nabe? It seems Sawamura's stupidity increased after hitting his head," Ono commented as he looked with pity towards Sawamura.
"Shut up, Bakamura! You should be happy we visited you despite our hectic schedule," Asou said proudly.
"Aren't you supposed to be preparing for college entrance exams? So please stop using me as an excuse to play hooky," Sawamura replied sarcastically.
"This kid! I'll beat the crap out of you! You ungrateful brat!" Asou blurted out while Seki had to stop him.
"Oi, stop it," Seki spoke nonchalantly.
Zono simply ignored the raucous and initiated a separate conversation with Sawamura. He informed them what the doctor had advised, just like his previous visitors. He didn't want them to worry any further, but he didn't want to lie, so he had no choice but to tell them the truth.
"I won't be allowed to walk for at least a week. It might be impossible for me to participate in Jingu Tournament," Sawamura said with a sad smile.
The third-years couldn't help but feel sad about the news. After Sawamura informed Oota of his status, they decided to go back to Seidou.
Early in the afternoon, nobody came to visit him anymore. He got bored, so he decided to take a stroll using the wheelchair. He couldn't help but sigh at the thought that he would not be home for Christmas. During Takashima's visit, she was advised by the doctor to prohibit Sawamura from traveling for now since it might make his sprained ankle worse. The doctor explained that if he wanted to heal faster, it would be better to stay put in one place as he recuperated. He recommended Sawamura remain at the hospital if there won't be anyone to look after him at the dorms since it's almost winter break.
"Listen up, Sawamura-kun. You need to call your parents and tell them you'll be staying here during Christmas break. Of course, I'll make sure to visit from time to time, but you need someone who can be with you longer," Takashima explained clearly to the boy.
Sawamura only said yes to end the conversation. But to be honest, he couldn't get the courage to call his family and tell them to come and take care of him while he was staying in Tokyo. Visitors were only allowed to remain within specific hours, so that would mean they had to rent a hotel somewhere near so they could take turns in looking out for him. As soon as he felt a slight headache, he decided to go back to his room and take some rest.
It was 4 in the afternoon when he woke up. Fortunately, his head stopped aching after getting some sleep. He looked outside the window as he suddenly remembered that he wouldn't be able to go home.
"What should I do about this? I wouldn't mind staying at the hospital for a while, but..." Sawamura's thoughts were interrupted when he felt his phone vibrate.
"Eijun? How are you doing?"
"Hey, mom. I'm doing fine. I just woke up. I've had a good sleep."
"That's good to know. So, when will you be home?"
"Uhm, about that..."
"Hmm? What is it, son?"
"I won't be able to go back home this winter break..." Sawamura spoke as he clenched his fist and tried not to cry.
"Eh? How come? Is there something wrong with you? Is there some sort of complication?"
"No, nothing like that. I was advised not to travel too far since it might worsen my sprained ankle. I was asked to stay at the hospital if the dorms are closed during Christmas vacation."
"Is that so? Then, we'll go there instead if you really can't go home." Sawamura's mother said without hesitation.
"No, that's not it, mom. You don't have to go here to Tokyo. I'll be fine on my own. I'll just be sleeping for most of the time. I can handle myself. Besides, there are nurses here who will take care of me. No need to worry about it."
"What nonsense are you talking about? We'll visit you, and that's it."
"I said I'm fine!"
"Eijun?"
"Sorry, mom. I didn't mean to raise my voice. I'll be fine. So, please? Just stay there, okay? It wouldn't be good for grandpa's health to be traveling at this time. I promise I'll go back home as soon as I recover."
His mother let out a deep sigh for a moment before answering.
"Are you sure you'll be fine there on your own?"
"Yes, I can handle myself just fine," Sawamura confirmed as he looked once more outside the window with a bitter smile.
"Okay. I'll let your father and your grandpa know."
"Okay."
"I love you, Eijun. Please take care of yourself, okay?"
"I love you too, mom. And of course, I will."
After that, the conversation finally ended.
I've already caused a lot of people trouble. So this is for the best. I'll be fine on my own.
At that time, Sawamura was unaware that Okumura had heard the entire conversation. He wasn't supposed to. He was about to leave for a while and wait for his phone call to finish when he heard Sawamura mention he wouldn't be able to return home.
