Chapter 1: here comes the sun (do do do)

Chapter Text

Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter,

Little darling, it feels like years since we’ve been here

The clinking and chattering of coffee cups and baristas flooded Matt’s senses as they walked through the door. One hand tucked into his partner’s arm, cane in the other, he stopped for a minute, taking a moment to breathe in the familiar atmosphere.

“You good?” Foggy said quietly.

“Hm?” Matt hummed, “Oh, yeah.” He smiled, content to be grounded by his boyfriend. A huge and sudden mass barreled straight into the man.

“Hey, watch it, man!” Foggy yelled, leaning down to help his partner up.

“You got a problem?” The huge man questioned. Matt had finally been able to steady himself and recenter when he heard the man’s threatening inquiry.

“No, no problem sir. Sorry, I should’ve watched where I was going,” Matt said with a grimace. He could feel Foggy’s eyes on him as he apologized, wondering why his partner would back down from the impending fight. The man hoped his lover would let the whole thing go, not wanting to ruin their day with a fight. He heard the burly man huff and walk away, muttering curses under his breath. After ordering their drinks (and pastries, of course), Foggy led his red-headed partner over to their usual booth, questions on his tongue.

“Okay, what was that?” He asked.

“What was what? I don't know what you're talking about, Fog,” he sincerely hoped that Foggy would just let the whole thing go and move past it so they could have a good day out.

“Oh no, don’t you play that game with me, Murdock. I mean, come on, that guy was a douchebag! Why didn’t you say anything?” Foggy exclaimed, pausing for a moment. “Aren’t you at least a little bit mad about what that guy said? I feel like I’m reacting more than you are,” he continued, thoughtfully.

After a beat of silence, the other man replied, “Not really… I know I should probably be more upset, but it’s been this way my whole life. People get upset about things like that all the time, I can’t just pick a fight with whoever tries to get a rise out of me. I used to get much more upset, to the point where I was just consumed with hatred for whatever stupid kid didn’t know anything better… Please, Foggy, just promise me you won’t make a big deal out of this?” Matt finished hesitantly. He could almost hear Foggy thinking. Matt listened to the rattling and groaning of the machines and baristas at the counter, waiting anxiously for his partner’s response.

“Alright,” Foggy began. “Here’s the deal, I won’t make a show of everything I hate about the ableist douchebags we meet in public, but behind closed doors? That’s out of my hands, buddy,” Foggy finished playfully. Matt breathed a quiet sigh of relief, thankful that Foggy had moved past the incident. Silently, he reached for his partner’s hand, glad to have found someone as amazing as him. As they walked out of the cafe, hands still joined, he tilted his head up to the sky, like a lizard basking in the warm rays of the sun, and breathed in the familiar sounds of the man next to him. Home.

Wear a mask and get vaccinated. COVID is serious, it's way past time when everyone should be taking it as such.
