Chapter Text
Danger Mouse wasn’t your average mouse. Besides his incredible physic, extraordinary brilliance and impossible luck; he was also a surprisingly caring person. At least when it came to his assistant.
Ernest Penfold wasn’t your average hamster. He was much much worse. Somehow even without it in his name Penfold attracted danger constantly. Evening going so far as to almost die by the hands of Crumhorn. Die! In a cartoon! Could you imagine the paperwork?!?
Luckily Danger Mouse leaped to his rescue and came out unsurprisingly unscathed. (Besides some light amnesia but that was solved rather quickly) But that is where our story brings us now, to a small letterbox in England.
“All right Colonel, I’ll make sure the moon doesn’t get turned into cheese…again. You can count on me!” Danger mouse responded to the colonel as the large screen cut to black.
“Oh crumbs chief, looks like I’ll have to finish canning my jam some other time,” Penfold stepped from the kitchen wearing a short white (jam covered) apron.” Although I fear most of it will go bad if not sealed properly..” Penfold said as he turned to look back at his pots and pans with disappointed eyes.
“Oh penfold that’s no worry! Come on adventure!,” DM quickly stops his excited speech “awaits…”
Danger mouse takes a few steps toward his assistant. He begins to speak with a lower tone. “Actually Penfold, how about you stick this one out?”
Penfold looks sharply at his taller friend. “Stick this one out? …you mean you want me to stay here?”
Danger mouse quickly changes and regains his bubbly mood. “Yes, that's exactly what you should do penfold! Why we wouldn’t want all your hard work to go to waste would we?”
“I quess…” Penfold most certainly CAN guess and he guesses that this sounds rubbish. His face obviously reflects this with his tight lips and confused expression.
“Perfect! Caio Penfold.” DM sits down on their couch/lift but before he pressed the button to thrusted downward he turns once again to penfold. “And don’t forget I expect plenty of delicious preserves once I’m back!”
And with that the amazing Danger mouse repeals off and a very confused jam covered hamster is left in his wake.

Chapter Text
Sadly for Penfold, this was only the beginning. Danger Mouse began to exclude him from almost every adventure! No matter whether it was a simple search and rescue to the inevitable saving of the world, DM seemed to always have an excuse for Penfold to stay at home.
At first, Penfold was confused yet secretly relieved. After the first week, he was getting a bit anxious. After the second, concerned and, after the third week of absolutely no adventures, Penfold was devastated.
“DM are you positive you don't want me to come with you?” Penfold asked right after the Colonel hung up. “I'm sure this one will take less than 30 minutes, we’ll be back in no time at all!”
“Hmm,” DM held his chin as he thought, “That is true, but I wouldn't want to trouble you with such a meaningless problem. Im sure those aliens didn't mean to drain the earth of all its water.”
Before the hamster could respond DM was out the door shouting back his goodbye and apology without looking back.
This was the last straw. Penfold curled up on the couch and began to think about his sad life. He was done for. Obviously, DM had just gotten sick of him messing things up and being such a coward. Penfold tried not to think of the “C” word but he couldnt help himself any longer. He was a coward. OF COURSE, this was always going to happen. Most super agents of DM’s caliber had either no sidekick or one that actually had some use besides quips and jabs. Penfold was just DM’s assistant and his friend on a good day.
It was time to start acting like the hamster DM wanted him to be. Even if it hurt, it was better than leaving. Penfold wouldn’t leave him, no matter what Danger Mouse thought about him.
