Work Text:
Earl Grey is the bravest little mouse in all of Ever After and Wonderland, to the point he's been knighted exactly 35768 times to date. So, when it came time for all of the mice in the land to decide who will bell the cat, Earl Grey was the obvious choice.
And the cat in question was none other than Kitty Cheshire.
Once night fell, Kitty Cheshire retired to her hammock for a good cat nap. Earl Grey, who had been tucked into his teacup bed by his dear owner, is wide awake. He gently creeps out of his bed, pulling his little mouse gear back on and re-arming himself with his sewing needle sword. Lastly, he descends to the ground for the key component of tonight's mission.
He used his connections with the Ella girl's mice to obtain a golden bell, just small enough for him to carry, just big enough for the other mice to hear. Said bell is in a teeny tiny box right under the crack between the dorm room door and the floor.
He doesn't unbox the bell just yet, knowing fully well that the box contains stuffing and things to keep the bell quiet for transportation. He can't risk waking dear Maddie, lest she interrupts his quest and sends him back to his snug bed.
And so, with the bell in his possession, Earl Grey sets out through the desert of the hardwood floor, the jungle of the rug, the endless climb of the wall, and the slippery slope of the hammock itself.
And then he reaches his destination: Kitty Cheshire.
He gently takes the bell from the box, careful to take all the soft things out from inside the bell. And then he takes off his belt, a piece of ribbon he stashed away that morning for this very purpose, and pulls it around the sleeping Cheshire's wrist. He threads the bell onto the ribbon and makes a good, tight knot.
And with the Cheshire belled, he makes the tiring trek home.
Maddie wakes up that morning to find her beloved mouse, not in his typical teacup. Fear strikes her heart, but only until she finds her dear little knight curled up on the rug, still in his armor.
Maddie giggles, scooping Earl Grey off the floor. "Oh, your valiant little mouse! You must have been questing late into the night. A late morning for you!"
She takes his armor off and puts his needle sword in a safe place before tucking him in again, complete with a kiss on his little head.
Earl Grey smiles as much as a mouse can in his sleep, and it only gets wider when he hears a bell ring before an irritated meow.
