Chapter Text

Wukong wasn't sure what he did wrong but now he was in the Flower Fruit Mountain with his old clothes, deep in the forest.

He somehow dove into the memory by accident... Maybe. Wukong looked around the place, everything seemed so realistic, much more than the images that would just flash through his head.

He could definitely break out of this memory and back to where he was... Yeah, he definitely should before something distracted him.

Just as Wukong was about to do so he heard someone call his name. "Wukong! There you are." Wukong's body immediately tensed up. He knew who it was but he couldn't bring himself to turn around and see... Him.

Why was this memory so realistic for anyway? "Kinda busy right now. Leave me alone." Wukong started walking away without turning to look at Macaque, he just kept walking through the forest and pushing leaves to the side that blocked his path.

Much to his bad luck, he could hear Macaque hurry after him and starting to walk close behind him.

"Look... I know that you're a bit disappointed right now because the monkeys ate all your peaches you collected but it's not that bad..." Macaque said, Wukong could clearly hear him trying to hold back his laughter. Oh, so that was the memory, this was like hundreds years ago...

Wukong looked down at his body, he was wearing his old clothes from centuries ago, he raised his hand, clenching and unclenching his fists.

Why was it all so vivid? Whatever, he shouldn't be slacking, he had to find Mk.

Wukong stopped and sat down in a meditating stance, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "What- erm, what're you doing?" Macaque asked, Wukong ignored him.

He stood still in his place and tried to break out of the memory, he could see cracks and the real view of where he was, sitting on the rock but... He couldn't reach it, he couldn't snap out of the memory.

It was like something was blocking him...

He began to panic then.

Why couldn't he break out of this memory? What was blocking him? Something clearly went wrong and he wasn't sure how he even unded up in this memory! It should've just been a flash of emotions and pictures but he was actually... In the memory.

It didn't make sense.

"Wukong, you're acting weird." Wukong opened his eyes and he finally looked at Macaque, his breathing stopped upon seeing all his six ears on display...

He hadn't seen them in so, so many years. They were as beautiful as ever.

"Weird? I'm not- no, I'm not weird at all..." Wukong said a bit too quickly and he looked away from Macaque, feeling his body sweat of how nervous he was.

"Right. You can't even look me in the eye and your heart beat is going crazy." Macaque said, Wukong shook his head and climbed up on the tree, stopping as he landed on a branch.

"Just go away Macaque." Wukong growled which seemed to surprise Macaque who landed beside him. Right, at this time he barely had outbursts at Macaque and mostly never got mad at him.

Wukong turned so his back was facing Macaque, he was still feeling riled up... His stomach coiled with a feeling he didn't feel too much, no, he wasn't nervous. He was afraid.

He couldn't face Macaque in the past like this, he couldn't face his former friend and not remember the things he did. It made him feel sick to his stomach.

"Why? C'mon, we can eat other fruits together." Wukong noticed a hand reaching out to him, before it could touch him he moved away to a different branch.

He'd never be able to escape with Macaque bothering him like this... But he didn't want to face Macaque either, no, he couldn't...

"Wukong... Peaches? You're seriously starting to worry me..." Macaque chuckled anxiously, he hopped next to Wukong yet again.

Wukong didn't reply, he simply stared down at the ground, feeling puzzled. What made this memory so different from the others? Why couldn't he snap out of it, did something go wrong?

Then he remembered Mk...

He promised the kid he would be there with him, that he would spend time with him and try to be a better mentor. Yet here he was, away from him, again...

Why couldn't he do one thing right?

Wukong exhaled and his expression darkened, he sat down and fiddled with his oddly realistic clothes, maybe to distract him or something, he shouldn't be crying. He needed to find Mk, and then everything would be okay.

Wukong tensed up when he felt warmth press against his side, Macaque was now sitting beside him and the warrior nuzzled his head on the King's shoulder. He felt the others tail intertwine with his own along with Macaque purring, a thing they used to do to soothe each other when one was feeling down...

Just the memories of this made Wukong's tears flow down, his body shuddered.

"I didn't know you were that upset about the peaches..." Macaque spoke softly, everything about this was making him feel even worse, reminding him of what he so desperately wished to hold close again. He hated it with all his heart.

"No, Macaque..." Wukong pulled away from Macaque, still refusing to meet his gaze. His tail wrapped around himself and away from the warriors.

"It's not that. I just... I made so many mistakes in my life, I can't bear to look at you and not remember what I did..." A sob tore through him and he curled up on himself further. "If only I could tell you how sorry I am but I'm too much of a coward... If only I could change things..." Wukong sniffled and wiped away his tears.

"Hey, peaches, hey..." Macaque leaned closer again and his hand brushed Wukong's cheek, caressing it softly.

"Look at me." Macaque said, Wukong hesitated but complied, he turned his head to look at Macaque, Wukong's eyes drifted all over his face...

He doesn't remember the last time he ever saw Macaque look so concerned for him, so soft to him, just being there for him... He missed this, he missed having Macaque by his side. He missed everything about him.

"I'm not quite sure what you're talking about but I'll always be here for you, no matter how many mistakes you make. You know that, right?" Macaque smiled softly. Wukong furrowed his eyebrows, feeling conflicted. No, that was false. Macaque would leave him, and it would be all his fault.

He spotted a few cracks around him, but he paid no attention. "You won't. Not after what I've done to you, you'll leave me. You deserve to have a better chance in life... I ruined that for you." Wukong said, a few more cracks popped up all around them.

"You didn't. I'm not upset, you didn't do anything." Macaque seemed more confused than before, Wukong could feel this memory shattering to pieces. "No! Maybe not now, but in future I ruined everything! I ruined it all and I can't, I don't know how to fix it! I can't do anything right!" Wukong shouted, Macaque seemed taken aback.

"Wukong-" Macaque reached his hand out to touch Wukong, maybe hold him close and comfort him but that memory already shattered and Wukong was startled back to reality. He was back on the rock, where he was...

Wukong sighed and wiped away his tears, he knew tearing through the memories would definitely be a pain in the ass. And it was. He needed to find Mk, to escape...

So he did, ignoring how horrible he felt he continued searching until he felt a presence. He wasn't alone.

Was it another memory again?

Wukong turned his head to look behind him, Macaque and Mk... He scanned them up and down, but sure enough they were real. And they were here.

"Mk..." Wukong smiled weakly.
