Jerry sighed as he fidgeted, waiting for the tailor that Osgood had insisted they go to for their wedding suits to return.
"She's very open-minded! She's living with a lady friend, if you know what I mean! She'll be delighted to help us for the wedding."
So far Jerry had tried out five suits, all of them only staying on for a few minutes as Jerry stared at himself wearing them in the mirror before being pulled off and handed back to the tailor, which speaking of, had just slipped through the curtain splitting the dressing room from the waiting area where Osgood was currently waiting. She had three or four garment bags draped over her arm, which she hung up on the rack beside the mirror with a pleasant smile.
"Here you go dear, try these on." She spoke, an accent present in her tone that Jerry had been trying and failing to identify ever since he and Osgood had walked in an hour ago, "I'll be out in the waiting room catching up with Osgood, holler if you need anything."
As the curtain swung shut behind the retreating form of the tailor, Jerry sighed and reached out for the first suit.
He quickly pulled it out of the garmet bag, slipping the trousers on and buttoning them up easily, before pulling on the patterned shirt and tucking it in, smoothing out and wrinkles. The suit jacket was next, a pretty blue color that reminded Jerry of the ocean water the night he ran away with Osgood.
Jerry, finishing off the last button on the suit jacket, took in a breath and turned to look at himself in the mirror.
Despite how much of his life he had spent in a suit, practically living out of one in his poor musician days, the reflection shown in the mirror made Jerry feel like he was looking at a stranger. His hair, curling below his ear - a similar length to the wig he had worn when he had met Osgood, he had been growing it out - looked... off, when paired with the suit.
He had shaved, only minutes before they left for the appointment. His bare skin, the lack of any sight of facial hair, felt as if it didn't match the suit.
His shoulders were accentuated by the suit, broad and...
His chest and hips were flattened off, giving him a boxy look.
They made him look, made him feel too... masculine.
Why couldn't he have just been born a girl? Why couldn't he look different?
Before Jerry knew it, they had burst into tears.
"Shit," they cursed under their shaking breath, their back meeting the wall of the dressing room and sliding down until they were settled on the floor, chest heaving and muffled sobs escaping despite their best efforts. "Shit."
Why was nothing right? The suits were wrong, Jerry felt wrong, none of it felt like it should.
"Jerry, darling?" Osgood's voice called from the other side of the curtain, concern present in his tone, "Are you alright?"
"I... it's..." Jerry brought in a shuddering breath, bringing their hands up to wipe away the frankly horrifying amount of tears that were streaming down their cheeks, "I don't know."
"May I come in?" Osgood asked simply, his shoes visible through the gap between the bottom of the curtain and floor.
"Yes," Jerry sniffed. "That's okay."
Osgood gently slipped through the curtain, his smile faltering as he saw Jerry - God, they must look like such a mess - sitting on the floor, suit rumpled, eyes red and teary.
"Oh darling," Osgood moved to crouch at Jerry's feet, reaching out to rest a comforting hand on their knee.
"I'm sorry, I just..." Jerry looked away, sniffling as they tried to twist their features back into a smile for their love.
"Jerry?" Osgood asked gently, before pausing, "Or, would you rather... Daphne?"
He was ever so smart.
Daphne's shoulders shook, but she nodded.
"Daphne it is," Osgood smiled reassuringly, "You don't have to cry, my dear. You don't need to wear a suit if you don't wish to."
"Oh, but this whole trip was to find my outfit for the wedding!" Daphne sobbed, her hands rising for her to bury her face in, "I've ruined everything! I've wasted your time, and I couldn't even tolerate wearing a suit for more than a few minutes. You probably don't even want to-"
"Daphne." Osgood cut off her panicked ramblings, gently reaching up to grab her wrists, pulling her shaking hands away from her tear-stained face, "I want you to be happy. I don't want you to force yourself to wear a suit, I want you to wear whatever makes you feel beautiful."
"But..."
"I have a surprise for you." Osgood patted Daphne's cheek gently, "I know you said no to it on the boat ride all the way back in Miami, but I went ahead and got this..." Osgood leaned away and called to the tailor - who Daphne honestly had forgotten was still outside in the waiting room - and after a few seconds reached out to accept a white garment bag.
Daphne watched as Osgood carefully turned back around and offered the bag to her.
"It's not completely altered yet, you'll need to try it on and get it fitted perfectly before it's ready for the wedding, but I thought you might like it over a suit..." Osgood's voice faded into the background as Daphne unzipped the bag and pulled out a beautiful dress, white with beautiful and intricate lace and beading.
"Is this...?" Daphne gasped and looked up at Osgood with wide eyes.
"My mother's dress!" Osgood beamed, "she was ever so disappointed when she didn't have a daughter to wear it, so she's been over the moon with the idea of you having it."
"And she's okay with..." Daphne motioned between herself and Osgood, "Us?"
"Oh, of course my love." Osgood reached up, gently cradling Daphne's cheek with his hand as he smiled brightly, "She just wants me to be happy. And you make me the happiest I have ever been."
"Oh, Osgood..." Daphne clutched the dress to her chest, "I don't know what to say."
"Well why don't you try it on, see if it makes you feel better." Osgood leaned in, and pressed a quick kiss to Daphne's cheek, "I'll be right outside if you need me."
As the curtain slipped shut behind her soon-to-be husband, Daphne turned her attention back to the beautiful dress. She carefully, reverently, hung it up and quickly stripped out of the suit she had tried on, quickly cramming it back in the garmet bag it had come from before turning back to the dress.
It was beautiful.
Daphne carefully stepped into the dress, taking care to avoid stepping on the hem or pulling on any delicate parts, gently and slowly pulling it up her body until it was settled on her like a second skin, like she had been meant for it.
It wasn't a perfect fit, but Daphne had no doubts that it would be the dress of her dreams with a little alterations.
It was obvious that Osgood's mother and Daphne weren't built the same, the dress being rather tight around the shoulders and arms while being rather loose around the chest and rear, but Daphne felt the prettiest she ever had.
The white lace beautifully complimented her dark hair and accentuated her eyes, the design of the top working to make her waist appear slim and her chest more voluminous, the train pooling beautifully behind her.
Unlike the suits she had tried on, the dress made Daphne feel feminine and pretty.
"Is everything alright in there, my love?" Osgood called from outside, his concern and love for Daphne warming her anxious heart.
"Yes... I know you're not supposed to see the bride in the dress before the wedding," the bride, Daphne had never called herself that before, "but we're already breaking most of the rules so I'm sure one more won't hurt."
With that, Daphne slipped around the curtain and moved to stand Infront of Osgood, who was looking at her as if she had personally hung each and every star in the sky.
"Oh," he breathed, reaching out to gently grab her shoulders, "Oh, you're beautiful, Daphne. The most beautiful thing I've ever seen."
"You like it?" Daphne laughed, reaching down to swirl the beautiful skirt of the dress around her legs, her vision blurring as her eyes filled with happy tears, her heart fluttering as she saw the pure unadulterated love clearly broadcasted across his face as he looked at her.
"It's perfect on you." Osgood smiled softly. "I love it. And I love you."
Careful to avoid stepping on the beautiful hem of the gown, Daphne stepped closer to Osgood and wrapped her arms around him as his crossed over her back, the pair falling into a gentle kiss.
"And I love you." Daphne whispered back with a smile, her previous fears forgotten.
