“So, will either one of you finally let us know what your names are and who we can call?” the policeman asked. “You two may be adults by Johto law, from what I can tell, but we still need to inform your parents and you may end up needing a lawyer.”
Satoshi hasn’t answered. And neither has Silver. They were both still quiet. The policeman sighed and lowered his head for a moment.
“Look, I want to help you two here. It was clear that it was just a misunderstanding between you two, but you have done property damage, and if the store owner wants to press charges… I need your Trainer Licenses, if you have those. I hope you two do.”
In Satoshi’s defense, it was Silver’s fault that got them detained.
“I do,” he finally murmured and took one of his old Pokedexes out. “‘S in the Dex. Though, uh, it may be registered under a different name. I can’t remember which region it’s from.”
The policeman looked at him for a long while and took the Pokedex from his hand. He looked expectantly at Silver, but his brother kept being quiet.
A few minutes after the officer left, Silver finally spoke up.
“You do know that that was a Unovan Pokedex, right?” he snorted, not even trying to hide his amusement. “You’re fucked , brother dearest.”
Oh. He was correct. Satoshi was fucked. Not only did he look completely different in Unova, but of course, he took the one Pokedex that wasn’t connected to the international License database and did not have his international one on it, only the Unovan one. And battling without a trainer License valid to the region — which is what they did…
Well. That’s illegal. Unless you’re one of the Grand Champions, but neither of them were ones, so that did not apply.
A different officer came back with the first one, holding his Pokedex in her hand. This one seemed a bit more serious and sat down in front of the cells.
“If you two don’t give us a number we can call, you will go to jail. Both of you. You,” the policewoman looked at Silver, “are not only not cooperating, you haven’t given us your License, so we have to assume you don’t have one. That’s all before the property damage, and the owner of the store you two almost completely destroyed wants to press charges. That in itself is at least paying her back. And you,” she turned to Satoshi, “gave us a Pokedex with a License that’s not valid in Johto that looks like it may be stolen. That gives you both charges of illegal Pokemon Battling as well. So.” She took a breath. “ Will you two cooperate? ”
“I have my International License at home?” Satoshi tried to counter, scratching the back of his head.
“You don’t know how often we hear that,” the first officer sighed. “Unless someone can bring it and we can confirm it’s yours, you will be treated as having an illegal, stolen one.”
Silver shook his head and his arms were jumping up and down. He was laughing at him! That—
“His name is Silver and he’s my older brother,” Satoshi started and Silver immediately turned to him and started shouting at him to stop. “He should have his Dex and License somewhere in his crossbody bag!”
Thank Arceus they were in separate cells, otherwise he may have ended up strangled. The female officer nodded and left.
“Uh, can you tell me where’s Pikachu?” he added after a few seconds, completely ignoring his brother.
“Your partner, I presume? It’s getting spoiled by one of the other officers.” Satoshi let himself breathe. “It’s very well-behaved and safe, no need to worry about it. I do, however, need to go now and fill out a report. You two need to behave now.”
A few minutes passed, then a quarter, half an hour. No one seemed to come back, and they were sitting in silence.
“We have to give them someone’s number,” Satoshi admitted after a couple more moments. “I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not make our father proud by having problems with law.”
That seemed to hit a spot, cause Silver’s eye twitched and he sighed heavily, slumping on the chair in his cell.
“That’s true,” he hummed. “So. Who should we call? Red?”
“I’d feel safer in jail,” Satoshi laughed. “Wataru, maybe. Or Gold? I don’t think either of them would kill us on sight. Mom’s out of the question.”
“Wataru it is, then. Hibiki would laugh at us too much to be of any help.” Silver reasoned.
“I assume you will start to cooperate, then?” the policewoman came back. They both nodded. “Good. So, who’s the person?”
“It’s… can we call him? I don’t think he’d answer a call from an unknown number,” Silver asked. “We can put the phone on speaker.”
“You can take my phone,” Satoshi added. “It’s the blue one. It doesn’t have a lock. If you go into contacts, it’s the one called, um… uncle whytaru .”
“Not a parent?” she raised her eyebrow but otherwise did the few steps he told her of. Silver laughed.
“Trust us, you wouldn’t want to meet our father.”
That ended the conversation, at least for a few minutes. One, two, three rings later, the call was answered and Wataru’s voice rang through the police station.
“ Satoshi, what do you want at this ungodly hour? ” The Johto Champion groaned.
“Please tell me you’re in Johto,” he almost begged. “Me and Silver kind of, uh, need your help.”
“ Of course I am. Where are you? ”
“The Police Station of Asagi City?” Satoshi laughed nervously. Wataru did not reply to that. A minute passed, the policewoman saying some stuff to his uncle, and all there was on the other side was silence.
“ I’ll be there in half an hour, ” Wataru’s resigned voice echoed through the cells. “ And you two better have a good explanation for your actions. Thank you for letting me know about this, officer.”
The call ended.
—————
“What did you two do ?” Wataru demanded to know the second he saw the two of them in the cells, two police officers walking behind him, faces clearly in shock. “And why did you decide that I’m the one to call? What about Kaede or Hanako? Even Ena?”
“We agreed that we’d rather stay here than face either one of them,” Silver said plainly, throwing one hand out. “And Satoshi started it.”
“ I started it? You decided that we should battle!”
“Shouldn’t have listened to me, little brother. I’m a bad influence.”
“I don’t want to hear a word more from you two,” Wataru sighed deeply and pinched the bridge of his nose. “If you don’t want either Hanako or Red to hear about this, you will tell me what happened. Right now. With no arguing.”
“Champion, sir, um, if I may– how do you know those two?” the officer that first detained them asked.
“They’re my nephews. I’m sorry you had to deal with them.” He turned to explain and then looked back at them. “Well? I’m waiting.”
Satoshi was the first to start talking. How they were just talking, but then started arguing over something he couldn’t even recall anymore. How it evolved into a Pokemon Battle. How two of their attacks combined and, somehow, hit one of the shops and destroyed half of it, and the owner called the police, who took them in.
“And I took my Unovan Pokedex with me,” Satoshi murmured. “So technically I battled without a legitimate License, so…”
“Why would you take the Unovan one?” Wataru sounded as if he was about to cry. “Satoshi. You have five other Pokedexes that have your international License on them. Why would you take the one that doesn’t?”
“I took the first one I got into my hands when we left for Johto,” he defended himself.
“You know what? Fine. I give up with you.” He turned to face Silver. “Well? Is that what happened?”
“I mean, yeah, basically.” Silver shrugged. “Though I do have my License with me. I just love to make the lives of law enforcement harder.”
“Unfortunately, I knew that already. I’m sorry for my nephews,” the Johto Champion turned towards the officers. “I can assure you that they both have valid Licenses, either me, the Kanto Champion, or Professors Oak or Elm can send you the paperwork regarding that. Unless there’s any other matter, could they be released?”
“The shopkeeper whose shop they destroyed wanted to press charges,” one of them said. “I can give you her contact information. I know her, she’s rather forgiving. You may come to an understanding.”
Twenty minutes later, they were standing outside the station, all their belongings with them and Pikachu on his shoulder. Wataru led him and Silver somewhere, towards some corner.
“Well,” he started once they stopped, his arms crossed and eyes hard like steel, looking straight at the two of them. “After you apologize to the shopkeeper, pay her back to the last dollar, and help her with repairs, I’m sure you two, as my lovely nephews, will be over the moon to let me join you in returning to Pallet Town. I haven’t seen Hanako in a while , after all. I’m sure she’ll be thrilled to hear what her sons were up to in Johto.”
Satoshi and Silver exchanged glances.
They were absolutely, positively, dead .
And Pikachu started laughing.
