Zoro is my husband

Summary:

Thanks to Sanji’s explanations while shopping, Luffy understood that he needed wedding rings. Why? Because he and Zoro had been married for the past three years.

So why no one believed him?

Work Text:

“Land!”

Luffy was sitting on the Sunny head, looking at the horizon eating bone meat. He looked up at the sound of Zoro’s voice coming from the crow’s nest loudspeaker.

“Land?”

Jinbe was reading a book and looking up at the horizon. He nodded “We finally arrived.”

“Awesome!” Luffy jumped from the Sunny head and ran to the kitchen “Nami! We arrived! Nami!”

It was snack time, Chopper was eating cotton candy, and Usopp was drinking water because he forgot (again) to bring a bottle of water to his workshop and was starting to have a migraine. Nami took the cup of tea Sanji was giving to her.

Nami hummed “By the look of the sky it should be a summer island.”

Chopper sighed “Oh no, I hope it won’t be too hot for me.”

Sanji put his hand on the pink hat “If you’re too hot, you could stay with Brook and Franky, their shift is about to start.”

Chopper nodded as Luffy started to jump “Come on Nami! We finally can have a new adventure! Yeah!”

Robin passed her head in the kitchen “Franky started to get the anchor out. I’m going to rest and Zoro prefers napping in the watchtower.”

Luffy nodded and Nami smiled, “Have a nice nap.”

Sanji waved “Rest well Robin-chan!”

The Thousand Sunny anchored at Cannes Island. The archipelago was composed of multiple islands and the main one was a seaside filled with rich peoples. Nami could smell the berries from the tourist pockets. Like every time they arrived on a new island, Nami created groups for each one's special missions.

“Me, Usopp, and Chopper, we will get new medicinal plants and books for Robin. Sanji goes shopping for groceries and Franky, Brook, and Luffy stay at the ship while Zoro and Robin are resting from their night shift.” Nami nodded “Everyone agreed? Great, now we can go!” The navigator rubbed her hands thinking of all the money she could steal.

“I don't agree.”

Nami stopped her walk and turned her head. Luffy, their captain was arms crossed, frowning “I want to go too.”

Usopp sighed “You know why you aren’t coming Luffy.”

Nami nodded “Last time we had to leave way too early because you caused a fight with marines.”

Luffy pouted “They said my hat looked stupid.”

“I didn’t say you were wrong, I said you beat up so many marines they called for Smoker.”

Luffy pouted even further. “But I want to go! Captain’s order!”

Nami could feel her veins popping on her forehead. When Luffy had an idea, you could be sure he wouldn’t stop until he had accomplished his goal. It’s one of the reasons Luffy was their captain. After all, none of them would have followed a coward.

Sanji lightened his cigarettes “Luffy could go with me.”

“You’re sure?” Nami raised her eyebrows. Sanji rarely agrees to have someone with him to do the groceries. Usually, it’s either Chopper or Brook but most of the time it was Zoro the unofficial pack mule

Sanji nodded “Of course my dear Nami-san.”

Luffy raised his arms in the air “Yeah! I’m going on an adventure with Sanji!”

Nami sighed as Sanji and Usoppp smiled at their captain's enthusiasm. She looked at Franky and Brook “You two are good? We can leave?”

The cyborg smiled “Of course! You guys can go shopping! I’ll protect Sunny and our sleeping nakamas! Super!” and made a pose.

Brook nodded “We will protect the ship until our last breath. But technically I already have my last breath.”

Nami, Usopp, and Chopper waved and started walking in the direction of the city, Sanji had started too when he noticed Luffy wasn’t following him. The cook saw their captain talking to Franky.

“When Zoro wakes up, could you tell him I’m in the city?”

“Of course! Don’t worry Captain!”

Luffy nodded with a laugh and joined Sanji.

“You think Marimo is going to freak out if he doesn’t see you?”

“Nah, but I prefer to warn him.”

Sanji sighed “I’m just sad that I won’t have the chance to see our goddess Robin-chan when she wakes up. She’s so beautiful just like our queen Nami-san!”

The duo arrived in the main city. The city looked like Water Seven, with a lot of rivers traveling in the city. A market was close to the main river and to the beach full of tourists and palms. Sanji looked around and thought it must be their lucky day seeing the market. The locals were selling their food, flowers, jewelry, and even clothes. Sanji cursed when he realized Luffy had left his sight and found him salivating in front of the meat seller.

The seller was a beautiful blonde woman, maybe if Sanji could flirt, they could pay less and Nami-san would be proud of him.

Sanji arrived smiling, ignoring his captain who had now stars in his eyes, seeing the meat.“Hi, did anyone tell you, you were too beautiful to work here? A lovely woman like you should be in a castle and not in a market.”

The woman chuckled “Thank you but” she raised her left hand, showing a silver ring on her fourth finger “my wife already told me that.”

“Oh, my dear apologies. I-”

“Sanji!” Luffy tugged his sleeve “Ne, I want meat! It looks so good! Please Sanji!”

“Yeah yeah, a minute Luffy. So we will take two pieces of pork, six pieces of beef, and five pieces of chicken.”

Luffy's eyes widened “Six?”

Sanji sighed “Fourteen please.”

The seller smiled as Luffy jumped in the air “Yeah! Thank you, Sanji!”

The woman picked up the meat and packed it up. Sanji paid up before starting to walk again. They passed in front of a florist. Sanji looked at the flowers, there were roses, sunflowers, orchids, and even marigolds. The flowers at the galley and library were starting to fade. Maybe he could buy some to replace them and of course for the ladies!

Sanji smiled,  “I’m sure Robin-chan and Nami-san would love this. Hi. I’m gonna pick two bouquets of roses, please. And a mix of two other bouquets too thank you.”  The cook paid and took the flowers.

He could feel the gaze of his captain on him. Maybe Luffy wanted more meat?

They started walking again when Luffy tugged his sleeve again “Ne Sanji, why didn’t you flirt with the woman with the meat?”

“Because she married Luffy. That means she’s with someone she’s in love with, so she won’t be interested in someone else.”

Luffy frowned “How did you know?”

“She had a wedding ring. See” Sanji showed the fourth finger of his left hand “When you’re married, you have a ring on the fourth finger of your left hand because it’s the only finger that has a vein that goes directly to the heart. It’s like having your lover close to your heart.”

“Oh” Luffy looked at his left hand “then I should have a ring too.”

“No Luf’, you have to be married to have a wedding ring.”

“But I’m married!”

Sanji stopped walking. “Luffy, you aren’t married.”

“Yes, I am!” Luffy counted on his fingers “It’s going to be our third anniversary!”

“Third?” Sanji frowned. What the hell? Since when Luffy was married?

And three years?

The Straw-hats started traveling three years ago so what, Luffy got married and just left?

What the hell?

“What do you mean three years?”

Luffy sighed as Sanji was the idiot “Zoro and I married three years ago.”

Sanji repressed a sigh. Of course, Luffy would mix things up. Luffy was smart don’t get him wrong but in matters of relationship and social manners, their sweet captain could be a little obvious and clueless.

“You’re not married Luffy.”

Luffy tapped his foot against the ground “Yes I am!”

“Luffy, I know we say the first mate is the Captain’s partner but that doesn’t mean you and Marimo are actually married, it’s different. It’s about love.”

“But I love Zoro!”

“Right.” Sanji pinched his lips. Of course, Luffy loved Zoro. Just like he loved Nami, Usopp, Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook, Jinbe, and Sanji himself. They were nakamas, of course, their captain would love them. Sanji needed to be a little more specific.

“But it’s a different kind of love. It makes you feel butterflies in your stomach or smile when you’re with the person or think about them.”

Luffy frowned and started walking pouting. Great, Sanji had succeeded in making their Captain upset.

“Luffy, come on.”

Luffy shook his head and acted like he didn’t hear the cook.

“Luffy, come back!”

The captain kept walking and then he stopped in front of what looked like a jewelry stand. Sanji went closer and saw Luffy looking at the different rings. He pulled out a small bag from his pocket but the Straw Hat Captain sighed.

Sanji went closer.“What’s wrong?”

Luffy looked sad “I don’t have enough money.”

Sanji looked at the rings. “Which one do you want?”

“The silver one. It looks like his eyes. And look, there is a touch of gold too.”

“They’re pretty.”

The price tag was showing forty-five belly and Luffy's money bag was nearly empty. Sanji didn’t actually believe that Luffy was married to Marimo but if their captain really wanted to buy rings, who was Sanji to stop him? Plus, Sanji would actually give all he had to see Marimo's face when Luffy gave him the ring.

Sanji looked at his own money bag “Nami-san just gave us enough money for the groceries. We still can go find them and see if she can give you more.”

“What if the rings were gone when we came back?” Luffy pouted “I really like them and I want to give them to Zoro.”

Sanji softly smiled, their captain was feared by the world government and the worst pirates but right now, he looked more like a sad scared kid.

Sanji looked at the seller “Hi, can you keep the rings for us? We will come back in a few with the rest of the money.”

The seller agreed and put the two rings aside.

Luffy smiled “Thank you so much! Come on Sanji! Now we have to find Nami!”

Luffy extended his arms and pulled them around Sanji's waist “Wait, Luffy no, hold on—”

Luffy extended his other arms to the next roof and suddenly Sanji was flying in the middle of the sky. They arrived on the roof and Luffy adjusted his hat “So, where do you think Nami, Usopp, and Chopper are?”

Sanji held his stomach and made a mental note to ask Chopper for a check-up to see if all of his internal organs were in the right place.

“Nami-san mentioned the bookshop so maybe we could go there.”

Luffy looked at the town. “We should ask someone.” He went close to the border of the roof and extended his head to the closest seller. Sanji could hear him “Sorry, is there a bookshop close?” The seller responded before suddenly screaming. Luffy’s head came back “The nice sir, said left and then right.”

Sanji lit up his cigarette “Okay so- wait hold on Luffy no!”

Too late. Luffy had already his arm wrapped around Sanji’s waist and started to fly across roofs.

They landed in front of the shop as Nami, Usopp, and Chopper were leaving the store.

“Sanji? Luffy? What’s going on?”

Luffy was jumping on his feet as Sanji was holding his stomach trying to not vomit. Fuck even after three years of sailing, he will never get used to it. “Chopper, when we’re back to the Sunny, I will definitely need a checkup.”

Chopper nodded “Sanji what happened?”

Luffy looked at their navigator, bouncing “Nami ne, I need more money please!”

Nami looked at him, then at Sanji “You already spent everything?”

“No Nami-san, it’s for something different.”

Luffy laughed “Shishishi, I want to buy rings for Zoro and I!”

Usopp frowned “Rings? Why rings?”

Luffy nodded “Sanji told me that when you get married, you have to wear a ring, so Zoro and I need rings.”

Nami blinked “You and Zoro need rings.”

Luffy nodded

“Because you’re married?”

Luffy nodded again.

“Together?”

“Yep.”

Nami, Usopp, and Chopper looked at each other before bursting into laughter. Luffy frowned and looked at Sanji “Why are they laughing?”

She whipped a tear “Oh Luffy, thank you for that, it’s been so long I haven't laughed like that.”

Luffy frowned further, “I don’t understand.”

“Luffy” Nami smiled “You and Zoro aren’t married.”

“Yes, we are.”

Nami tilted her head “Luffy, I know the second name of the first mate is the Captain’s partner but-”

“Sanji already told me that.” Luffy crossed his arms “Zoro is husband, why does no one believe me!”

Usopp whispered, “He’s really serious?”

“Unfortunately” Sanji exhaled some smoke. “I already tried to explain to him but our dear captain doesn’t want to understand.”

Nami frowned “Luffy, I’m not going to give you money to buy rings because you think Zoro and you are married.”

Luffy pouted “Nami you’re mean. I want the money! Captain’s order!”

Nami pinched her lips. Sanji whispered “Look Nami-san, I saw the rings, it’s only forty-five berries and for one time Luffy is asking for something personal. Also, I really want to see Marimo's face when he gives him the rings because he thinks they’re married.”

Nami looks back at Luffy. Their beloved idiot captain looked sad. He wasn’t smiling even with Usopp and Chopper making jokes in front of him. He had the same face as when Sanji refused to give him meat or Chopper would force him to do a checkup after a fight.

Sanji was right, Luffy never asks personal things when they’re on a new island besides adventure and meat. Besides, Zoro’s face when Luffy gives him the ring will definitely be worth forty-five berries.

She sighed “Fine,” Nami opened her bags and gave Luffy the money “Here, forty-five berries, and nothing more.”

Luffy eyes were full of sparkles “Thank you so much Nami!” He looked at Sanji “Ne Sanji, we have to go back to the shop!”

Luffy extended his arms, in his left arms were Nami and Sanji, and in the right Chopper and Usopp.

Nami and Sanji started to try to get out of the embrace. “Wait Luffy no!” “Luffy stop it!”

Luffy spread his legs, stooped to drown to gain momentum, and then jumped on the roof hearing his nakamas’ screams.

A minute later they arrived at the jewelry stand and while Chopper and Usoppp were trying to breathe normally again Nami and Sanji punched Luffy in the head.

“Stupid Captain!”

“What’s wrong with you!”

Luffy rubbed his head “Why did you punch me?”

Nami crossed her arms “You know why stupid captain.”

Luffy rubbed his head and suddenly stood up. His nakamas watched him get to the seller and ask for the rings.

“Hi, I have the money for the rings so can I have them please?”

The old man nodded and gave him the rings “Is it for someone special?”

Luffy nodded with a smile “It’s for Zoro. He’s my husband.”

“Well someone is lucky.” The man put the rings in a small bag while Luffy gave him the money. “Have a nice day.”

“You too.” Luffy jogged to his nakamas “I have the rings. Can we go back to the Sunny now?”

Usopp shrugged “We bought everything we needed. You?”

Sanji shook his head, “We still need vegetables.”

Luffy pouted “We don’t need vegetables, we need to go back to Sunny.”

Nami frowned, “We need vegetables Luf, and don’t worry, Zoro won’t disappear if we come back later.”

Luffy pouted as Chopper smiled at him “I’m sure Zoro will love it.”

“I hope so.”

The straw hats started walking around the market. Sanji bought the vegetables and Nami a necklace she would ship for Vivi. Usopp took some tools. Luffy and Chopper stayed by Sanji’s side.

After Sanji paid up, Chopper and Luffy were walking in front of the three other Straw Hat. The young doctor looked at their Captain.

“Luffy, you should put them in your pockets or in my bag.”

“Thank you Chopper but I prefer to keep them in my hands.”

Sanji, Nami, and Usopp watched the exchange.

The sniper rubbed his forehead “He really believes Zoro and him are married?”

Sanji hummed.

Nami smiled, “I can’t wait to see Zoro’s face. I bet he’s going to scream.”

Usopp shook his head “Nah, he won’t be awake enough to care. Or kick him into the ocean.”

Sanji chuckled “Marimo will just look at him and say what the fuck?”

Nami and Usopp burst into laughter “I seriously can’t wait to see that.”

Luffy and Chopper looked at them. The straw hat doctor titled his head “What are they talking about?”

“I don’t know. Oi! Sanji! Are we done?”

Sanji wiped a tear and looked at the different bags before looking at his captain. “Yes, we can go back to the Sunny.”

Luffy jumped in the air “Yes! Now come on! I have to give Zoro our rings!”

The five straw hats started walking in the direction of the port where the Sunny would moor.

“Zoro!” Luffy started shouting for his first mate even if he was still on land. “Zoro!”

Luffy extended his arm, grabbed the head of the Sunny, and flew across the rest of the walk to arrive on the Sunny.

Nami, Sanji, Usopp, and Chopper arrived later and saw Luffy jumping next to Zoro who was napping on the grass.

“Zoro, wake up! Come on! Zoro!”

Luffy grabbed his shirt and started to shake Zoro. Robin, Franky, Brook, and Jinbe joined the rest of the crew and watched the whole scene.

Franky frowned “What’s going on?”

Sanji lightened another cigarette. “Just watch, it’s gonna be fun.”

Sanji, like the rest of the crew, knew that Zoro was facking his sleepingness. The swordsman was a heavy sleeper but would wake up the second he heard his captain’s voice.

Luffy pouted “Zoro! Wake up! It’s important!” He shakes him even harder “Zoro wake up! Captain’s order!”

Zoro opened his good eye “Yes Luf’” he yawned and sat against one of the Sunny walls. “Did you find something in town?”

Luffy beamed. He sat in front of his first mate and took one of the rings out from the small bag. “Sanji told me that when we’re married, we have to wear a ring. So I bought you a ring!” And Luffy showed him the ring.

The whole crew was looking at them waiting for Zoro's reaction. They expected anger, confusion, boredom, and even disgust. Certainly not a smile. Zoro smiled. It wasn’t big but it was there. Sanji rubbed his eyes but no, he wasn’t hallucinating. Zoro was actually, genuinely smiling.

“Thank you Luf. You want to put it on my finger?”

Luffy beamed. Zoro showed him his left hand. Luffy spoke again “So Sanji said the fourth finger because it’s the only finger where the veins go straight to the heart.” He holds Zoro’s left hand and slowly puts the ring on the fourth finger. “I chose them because there is silver like your eyes and there is gold too because I’m going to be the Pirates King and you the best swordsman of the world so you need gold. Just like your earrings.”

“You have yours?”

Luffy frowned “Mine? But I’m gonna lose my ring during a fight if I put it on my finger because of my devil fruit.” He pouted “I don’t want to lose my ring.”

“We can put it on a necklace.”

“But it won’t be on my fourth finger! It has to be on the fourth so it can be close to my heart.”

Zoro smiled. “If we put it on a necklace, the ring will be just above your heart. It would be the exact same.”

“You’re right!” Luffy beamed “Zoro is so smart!”

Zoro put the ring on a necklace and put it around the neck of his captain. “See, it’s just above your heart.”

Luffy smiled seeing his ring over his scar just above his heart and beamed at Zoro.

Nami raised her eyebrows and said what the whole crew was thinking “What the fuck?”

Zoro looked at them and seemed to realize the whole crew saw everything. “What?”

“What?” Nami raised her arms in the air “What do you mean what?”

Usopp nodded “Why did you accept the ring?”

Zoro raised an eyebrow “Because Luffy and I are married.”

Sanji growled “Seriously? Marimo that's low. I mean, Luffy doesn’t understand that fine, but you? Come on Cactus Head, we both know you and Luffy aren’t married.”

Zoro frowned “Oi Shitty Cook, if I tell you Luffy and I are married it’s because we are dumbasses.”

Sanji felt the veins in his forehead popping. He prepared to scream when Franky crossed his arms “When did you guys get married?”

Luffy smiled “At Shell Town.”

“Shell Town?” Nami frowned, “Wait, isn't that where you two meet?”

Zoro nodded “It’s Ripper, the new commander at the time who married us on our boat before we left.”

Luffy nodded aggressively “He wanted to thank us after we defeated metal jaw asshole.”

Sanji's eyes widened. “But why?”

Luffy smiled “Ace and Sabo said I need to marry my person. Zoro is my person, he made me feel butterflies in my stomach and smiled just like you said Sanji!”

Nami blinked “You two are not serious.” Luffy and Zoro smiled at her “you two are fucking serious!”

Luffy laughed, “Shishishi, I told you we were married!.”

Sanji's eyes widened “You never kiss or cuddle or anything!”

“Zoro doesn’t like public affection.”

Nami nodded “So after Dressrosa or Skipeia, at the parties, when I saw you two kissing in an alley, I wasn’t that drunk?”

“Yep.”

“And when you asked to have just one room for the two of you at Alabasta or Water Seven it’s because you were freaking married?”

Zoro nodded, “We did our six months in Alabasta.”

Luffy smiled, “Vivi was nice, she even brought us a cake.”

“Oh my god.”

Usopp gasped “Please don’t tell me you guys had sex in our bedroom!”

Zoro frowned “What the fuck? No. Luffy and I don't like sex so we just cuddle in the room Franky made us.”

Luffy nodded “Cuddles are so cool. I love Zoro’s cuddles. Best cuddles ever. And kiss too. I love Zoro’s kiss.”

Franky narrowed his eyes “What? I thought the captain’s room was for talking strategy between the captain and first mate.”

Luffy laughed, “Shishishi, Strategy.”

Zoro smiled “Why did you think we asked for a bed?”

“I don’t know! Maybe long discussions!”

Luffy snorted.

Sanji “So when Luffy would ask during my night shift for snacks at three am and went to the captain’s room, it was for both of you?”

Zoro smiled, “Very good snacks Shitty Cook thanks.”

“I’m going to kill myself.”

Nami looked at Robin “Did you know?” she smiled and Nami rolled her eyes “Of course, you fucking knew!”

Brook nodded, “It’s pretty obvious.”

Jinbe nodded too “You guys didn’t know?”

Sanji turned his head so fast he nearly had a whiplash. “You fucking knew too?”

Brook nodded “I saw them kissing after Zoro woke up at Thriller Bark. And you Jinbe?”

“I saw them kissing too at the Ryugu Kingdom.”

Luffy looked at Sanji “So now you believe me Zoro is my husband or do you need proof?”

Sanji shook his head “Never.”

Luffy and Zoro started laughing.

Chopper frowned. “I’m happy for you but I’m a bit sad too. We weren’t there for your wedding.”

Zoro shrugged, “We still can renew our vows.”

Luffy and Chopper exclaimed “Really?”

Zoro nodded.

Luffy beamed “When I will be Pirate King and you the greatest swordsman of the world we will renew our vows with everyone!”

Zoro softly smiled “Aye, aye Captain.”

Luffy smiled. The rest of the crew started talking about the future wedding, Nami and Robin were talking about the flowers until Robin told Nami she will have to do the ceremony since she was the third in command and Nami started panicking before thinking about how much money they could pay her. Jinbe asked Brook what music he would play, Chopper and Usopp wanted to create the guest list and who would be Luffy’s best man. Franky claimed he needed to start preparing the fireworks.

Sanji thought about the menu and the cake. He was about to ask if he could make the cake green when he saw Luffy cupping Zoro’s face with his hands. Luffy put his forehead against Zoro’s and kissed him so gently and intimately that Sanji looked away and felt like a voyeur.

After that day, the crew expected big changes in their routine but in reality, everything was the same. It is just that now, they will see the little things.

Like Luffy holding Zoro’s hand or red sash. Him resting his head on Zoro’s shoulder or Zoro starting to nap against Luffy’s back. How Zoro would always press his knee against Luffy’s when they were eating. They would understand that Luffy would join Zoro at the crow’s nest during night shifts because he wasn’t able to sleep alone.

They would always look at each other before a separation even a short one and have a silent conversation based on, be careful , be safe , I need you so come back to me , I love you

The only things that would have changed are now when Zoro was sleepy or lost in thought he would brush his ring with his thumb and when Luffy wasn’t sure about something or before a fight or away from Zoro even for five minutes, he would bring his ring to his lips and kiss it. They weren’t subtle about kissing anymore. Now, the Mugiwara were used to seeing Luffy stealing kisses during Zoro’s training or naps, there was also the good morning/good night kiss after Night Shift or before and after fights. Now Zoro would nap with the straw hat on his face with Luffy curled up next to him or on his laps.

Sanji didn’t find the energy to complain even for annoying Marimo. Seeing his Captain and his friend happy was worth wanting to bleach his eyes all the time.
