Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“Doctor Oak?” a young girl approaches Blue after class. She seems a bit timid, and her face is bright red.

“I’ve told you many times, Mr Oak is just fine! Heck, even Blue’s fine.” Blue shakes his head at the young girl. Selene. She’s rather quiet but shines in battling and academics.

“Well! We wanted to know who you’re married to!” another boy pipes up from behind Selene. Hau. Hau is bright and the total opposite to Selene, he’s very chatty and outgoing. But one common trait between both students are their outstanding grades.

Blue starts to chuckle at his own joke, “Have you ever heard about a combee’s wax?

The two teenagers tilt their heads in confusion. Blue wonders if he looked so babyish at their age.

“Mind your own combee’s wax!” Blue shakes his head. “Have a lovely day you two!”

Hau mutters, feeling dejected, while Selene awkwardly shuffles out of his classroom.

Blue leans back into the staffroom’s couch, he closes his eyes for a moment. He feels the couch dip next to him and the aroma of expensive Kalosian coffee causes him to bat a lazy eye at the person sitting beside him.

“Hello, Mr Isamu.” Blue winks and accepts the coffee from Red.

Red rolls his eyes at Blue and takes a sip of his own coffee. Red’s always enjoyed black coffee while Blue’s needs to have more cream and sugar than coffee. Red finds that it’s just dessert but continues to make it every day with no complaints just for Blue.

“You know, Hau and Selene actually asked me a funny question today…” Blue swirls his cup of coffee around before taking another sip. Red raises his eyebrows at him. Red can’t raise a singular eyebrow, and every time Red has tried, Blue has relentlessly made fun of him, so he had no choice but to give up.

“They asked who I was married to.” Blue sits up a little straighter. Red can’t help but look unimpressed, who can blame him? He expected something interesting, not as boring as this.

“Anyways, I didn’t answer. I’ll leave it to them to find out.” Blue shrugs. “I am a history teacher after all. Let my teaching guide them to the answer. If they ask you, don’t answer!”

Red nods and places a hand on Blue’s knee. He reaches over Blue to grab chips from Blue’s bag.

“I packed you some!” Blue gently slaps Red’s hand away. Red frowns and Blue closes his lunchbox.

“Professor Isamu!” Red’s jolted from marking his student’s papers by Hau and another boy, Elio. Elio’s a good kid, he’s a hardworking person but is terrible at communicating with people. Red gets the kid.

“Ummm…” Elio looks to the side, rocking back and forth on his heels. “We were uh— Wonderin—“

Elio is cut off.

“We were wondering if you knew who Mr Oak is married to! We see you guys hanging out and stuff!”

Red wonders if Blue being queer occured to these kids, but to be honest it’s already been confirmed. No straight man wears green capris.

“We think it’s Professor Huang!” Hau grins proudly, Elio nods in agreement. Red raises his eyebrows and leans in with a little bit of interest.

“Well… Because Mr Oak and Professor Huang seem to have a sort of connection!” Elio pipes in. Red scoffs to himself, the only connection those two have is they’re both absolute geeks about Kanto literature.

“We see them talking to one another after classes! Blue’s always patting his shoulder and stuff.” Hau looks determined. Red scoffs internally again. Blue only does that to seem friendly, he’s afraid of someone thinking about him in a negative light.

“So are we on the right track?” Hau places his hands on Red’s desk and stares him down, what is up with this kid? Red simply shrugs and points to the door. The two kids leave, discussing their leads.

“Do you think it could be Mr Isamu?” Elio suggests with a shrug, as if he knew it wasn’t true.

“Nah. He’s too cool.” Hau replies. Red’s grinning like a maniac, the kid just said Red’s way cooler than Blue. He’ll have to rub it in Blue’s face later at home.
