Chapter Text

It had been a grueling week in the traveler’s Hyrule. The monster attacks had been relentless both from the black blooded monsters and Hyrule’s regular monster foes. Everyone was exhausted and they were running low on materials.

So when a portal opened up for them right after they had been ambushed there was both relief and anxiety. What was waiting for them on the other side of that portal? They were in desperate need of rest and if they were placed in the middle of another fight there was no way they were getting out of it without injuries.

“Well guess there’s nothing else to do. We walk through in pairs.” Time called as he approached the portal, the captain stepping to his side.

“Right. Time and I will go through first” Warriors knew they were all exhausted but if they were walking into yet another fight, he and the old man wanted to take the brunt of it for the others. “Legend, Hyrule you guys follow.”

Legend grumbled about not needing orders but didn’t fight. Honestly, he wanted to get his successor away from his hyrule as fast as possible. The monsters here had a weird obsession with the kid’s blood and Legend was dreading the day ‘Rulie would have to face them alone again.

“Sky, you follow with Four and Wind.” Warriors continued to hand out marching orders. His fellow knight nodding along sleepily. The exhaustion was deeply settled into all of their bones, but even so Sky wasn’t about to drop his guard, not when he was being tasked to watch his younger brothers’ backs. (Even though Four wasn’t as young as he seemed, and Wind hated being babied)

“Twilight, Wild, you’re guard the rear with Epona.” The final two nodded along with Wild sneaking next to the horse to steal her reigns from her master. He gave a cheeky grin to Twilight as he did so, earning him a roll of the eyes, though he knew if the rancher didn’t truly want him to lead his precious companion, he wouldn’t have let him steal the reigns so easily.

The two watched as the rest of the chain made their way through the portal. Hoping for something good to be on the other side while also keeping an eye out for any monsters or shadows that could be following them. Finally, it was their turn to head through the portal.

Wild tapped his slate pulling out an apple and holding it in front of Epona. Smiling as she crunched down on the apple and happily followed him towards the portal.

“You’re worst then Ilia when it comes to spoiling my horse.” Twilight observed with no true heat. He could never be mad at someone pampering Epona, nor could he ever truly be angry with Wild.

Wild just snorted as they passed through the portal. He leaned so Twilight could see him around Epona. ‘You’re just scared she’ll start to like me better.’ He signed at his brother as they walked through the portal.

Twilight’s response would forever be lost to Wild as he looks at the new landscape in front of them.

There was a large tree to his right and a small pond in front of him surrounded by trees. No not just any pond, this was Firly Pond. The pond that ran below the bridge to his house! His eyes tracked upward, to the left there was a pole with a familiar banner flapping in the wind. And if he looked further, he could see the unmistakable box like shape of Bolson’s houses.

He was home. Not just in his hyrule but in Hateno village. Just steps away from his house. He offered up a quick thanks to the gods because this was incredible luck.

“Anyone recognize this Hyrule?” Time called out asking the familiar question from every portal they walk through.

Wild quickly got their attention waving his hands excitedly in front of himself. “Mine.” His voice was always soft thanks to the damage to his vocal cords from the guardian blast, but he knew they heard him.

Wind let out a loud groan, his arms dropping dramatically at his sides. “Please tell me we are near a town.” He groaned, while a few others winced as well. It was well known in the group just how big Wild’s Hyrule was. The last few times they had been dropped here they had to walk for days before finding any form of safe haven. For someone like Wind who wasn’t used to walking such long distances it was one of his least favorite Hyrules.

Wild just smiled, delighted with how close they were to his home. They would all be able to rest. “Hateno.” He said pointing towards the box shaped houses on the ridge. The group turned to see what he was pointing at.

Wind let out an excited gasp. “A town!” That meant an inn with real beds and being able to sleep for the whole night.

“Thank the goddess.” Sky slumped a bit as he finally let the exhaustion hit him. They were safe. As wild as Wild’s Hyrule could be, the towns had always been safe.

“Good we need to restock.” Warriors said thinking about how low they were on supplies. But even as he did, he could feel his body starting to relax as well. There would be time to restock tomorrow. The sun had already gone down, and they were being blessed with a break.

The group started to head towards the town when Twilight’s voice rang out. “Hey Cub, where are you going?”

They all looked back to see Wild leading Epona away from the village. For a moment they all started to tense again. This was Wild’s Hyrule after all. He knew it better than anyone. Maybe this town wasn’t safe after all. Didn’t Wild say he had assassins after him in his Hyrule. Maybe this was their base.

Their fears were quickly put to rest as Wild stopped and looked over his shoulder and smiled warmly at all of them. “Home.” He said in that soft voice of his before turning back and leading Epona up the small incline behind them.

“Home?” Legend repeated dumbfounded. “Did the kid who sleeps in trees just say he has a home?”

“Don’t get your hopes to high.” Warriors teased as he bumped Legend’s shoulder as he passed, following Wild. “Who knows could just be his favorite tree.”

“You idiots,” Four rolled his eyes as he walked by the two of them. “He literally told you he bought a house the first time we met Malon.” He snarked at them over his shoulder.

The two stopped their bickering in an instant before looking at each other. “Oh ya.” They both said at the same time before following the rest of the chain.

Twilight ignored them and rushed to catch up with Wild and Epona. “So where is this house of yours?” He was just as curious as the others. Yet all he received was a bright smile from Wild as he continued to lead them up the hill.

As they made it to the top of the hill the cliff face to their left evened out with them revealing a quaint but cozy view.

There was a large tree overlooking a small pond. Surrounding the pond were flowers and smaller trees. They were recently planted but would grow into behemoths if properly cared for and given the time. Nestled in all this wildlife was a little house, it’s chimney standing tall and giving the structure away. It was a soft cream color and Twilight could just make out a horse stable on the side of the house facing them. The house stood alone tucked into a space between the cliff face and a drop off into the pond below. Connected to the rest of the village by a sturdy wooden bridge. It was a picturesque village home.

More importantly it was perfect for Wild. The house was wrapped in nature, the mountain it was tucked into and the river in front of it made for a secluded place that was beautiful and peaceful. It was part of the village but had enough space to give their wild child space to relax. Wild loved his people. He was friends with practically everyone in his Hyrule and was a friendly young man. But he was easily overwhelmed by large crowds or over exposure to groups.

It had taken time for the chain to find a balance with both Wild and Hyrule’s needs for alone time. The group had found that allowing the two to wander together every now and then was quite beneficial to both of their solitary travelers.

Looking at the little house, Twilight knew it was the perfect place for his cub.

Wild continued to lead the way, the rest of the chain gasping and shouting as they crested the hill. “This is your house!” Wind cried as he ran towards the structure.

Wild laughed, an airy sound they all recognized as his damaged voice’s version of the sound. Twilight moved to walk beside his cub as he led Epona to the stable. There were no gates to the pens, more just a structure for the horse to take shelter in if it wanted and a place to hang up gear. The structure allowed the horse to wander as far as it wanted, as wild as the boy who owned the house. Twilight wasn’t worried, Epona wouldn’t wander too far and even if she did, she always came when called.

He gently took the lead from Wild as they approached the structure. “I’ve got her. Why don’t you show the others where to go.” Wild started to argue, while he was very excited to show all his brothers his home, he particularly wanted to show Twilight. But before he could they heard the sound of a door being thrown open.

“This place is so cool!” Wind called as he ran in.

“Wind we should wait for Wild!” Warriors called trying to hold some form of manners in the group. Legend walked right past him and into the house.

“What we walk into places all the time without asking. Do you think Wild’s going to mind?” Legend called to the captain as he strutted into the house, Hyrule right behind him.

Sky followed the duo resting a sleepy hand on Warriors’s shoulder. “He not wrong. Breaking and entering kinda goes right along with adventuring. It’s the only way we find things.” Sky explained warmly. He knew Warriors’s adventure was quite different from the rest of theirs in many ways. The captain had never had to do a fetch quest for his items or track down certain villagers before. He had led men into battle and worried about battlefield locations and solider movement.

While his adventure was inherently different his knowledge was invaluable in their current journey, being the only one used to coordinating groups of competent warriors. Everyone in the chain brought unique skills and items from their quests, while they might share a destination and a spirit, they were all individuals.

But with Warriors experience being so different Sky and Time were quick to come to his aid when there seemed to be a gap in his experience. Twilight helped as well but his attention was normally on the younger members of the chain. Legend would help but prefers to tease first and answer questions (with riddles) later.

Warriors started to protest the idea when Wild slid up on his other side and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder to get his attention. ‘You’re always welcome.’ He signed. He would never deny his brothers entry to his home. ‘Thank you for waiting.’ He tagged on earning a relaxed smile for the captain. While Wild was no stranger to just walking into random people’s homes it was nice to have the captain wait for his permission before entering.

The three headed in. Four tailing behind them and Time heading over to help Twilight with Epona.

The weapon displays shouldn’t have surprised anyone. On the three walls downstairs Wild had a collection of weapons. Wind and Legend were standing there discussing the giant hammer on the wall. Sky made his way over to look at the elegant spear, and Hyrule was looking at the decorated shields.

“Please don’t touch.” Wild called to the group as he made his way inside. He knew they wouldn’t break them. The weapons were sturdy and no one else in the chain seemed to have his talent for breaking their gear, but he was still worried. The champions’ weapons were very dear to him, it’s why he kept them safe in his house rather than in his slate.

Wind whirled around pointing at the Daruk’s Bolder Breaker. “Can you really use this without a power bracket.” Wind’s Skull hammer was huge, but its weight was distributed fairly, this hammer looked like only a Goron could use it.

Wild looked over at him with a smile and a nod before ducking under the stairs.

Warriors made his way to Wild’s bow collection. “You’ve got quite the collection.” He called to Wild as he examined a beautifully made blue bow.

“And they are all expertly crafted.” Four said as he observed the Scimitar and matching shield on the wall. “I know you asked us not to touch, but later would you mind showing me some of these?” He asked as he turned to face Wild. The champion returned to the room with a pile of blankets. “I won’t touch them if you don’t want me to, but I’d love to get a closer look at the craftsmanship.”

Wild thought about it for a moment. Out of everyone in the chain Four was the least likely to break the champions’ weapons. And he would probably be able to tell Wild how best to care for them.

He moved to set the blankets on the kitchen table before signing. “We can look at them tomorrow. I’m trusting you to take good care of them, they mean a lot to me.”

“Why?” Wind asked, looking back to the weapons. He cocked his head to the side looking for anything special about them. “Did they help you on your quest?” He spun to face Wild. “Or are them magic items!?” It was always exciting to compare dungeon items with the other heroes as some items were extremely unique and fun to ‘borrow’ when his brothers weren’t looking.

Legend turned to look at the weapons again, his eye catching on the elegant spear this time. A distinctly non-Hylian design. “Or did someone give them to you?”

Wild paused and looked down as he thought about what to say. ‘They belonged.’ His hands stilled again as he thought over his words and what he was ready to say. ‘To the champions.’

As he finished his sign he felt a hand land on his shoulder. Looking up he saw Twilight and Time standing beside him. Twilight turned to look at the room but never removed his hand from Wild’s shoulder. It was nice to have that physical reminder that he was no longer alone.

Wild took a stabilizing breath before looking at the other people in the room. His brothers were once again looking at the weapons but this time with a heavier almost reverent air to them. He had mentioned the champions in passing before. His brothers knew of them and of their deaths, but he hadn’t told them much about the champions’ personalities. Not even their names, just their titles. Maybe it was time to open up. He cleared this throat gaining their attention before signing again. ‘I’ll tell you about them tomorrow when we look over their weapons.’

Wind looked ecstatic to learn more about his brother’s adventure. The others had more solemn expressions. While they were glade Wild was opening up, they also knew the weight of these stories. The tales of fallen comrades. Most of them had lost someone, and few had opened up about their own losses.

‘But first sleep.’ Wild continued as he moved to the pile of blankets on the table. ‘I only have one bed, but I can talk to Bolson tomorrow about getting some extra cots. For tonight though I have extra blankets you can use.’

“This is more than enough Champion.” Time reassured as he started handing out the blankets.

Legend and Hyrule took their regular bedding and started to set up a place to sleep in the weapons nook, placing their bedding down next to the bow display. Four and Sky bedding down next to them. Warriors and Wind filled out the rest of the space next to the shields. Time took a place next to the stairs. Placing himself between his boys and the door.

Twilight moved to settle near Time when Wild grabbed his hand. He turned to give his cub his attention. The younger letting go of his hand to sign. ‘Want to join me upstairs?’ He seemed a little shy about asking but Twilight felt nothing but warmth for his little brother.

They regularly slept near each other. Twilight waking up to help sooth Wild’s nightmares. He was more than happy to follow Wild upstairs. The two collapsed into Wild’s bed. It wasn’t the largest bed but had plenty of room for the two of them.

With all the heroes safely tucked away in the little house they all slept soundly. Unaware of the chaos and fear the following days would bring.

Chapter Text

Even months after his adventure ended, Wild still woke with the rising sun. Maybe it’s because of how quickly he had joined the chain that he never got used to the idea of sleeping in. Or maybe it was his old life’s habits, the reason unremembered but his body still responding to the internal clock that wasn’t totally his.

He wasn’t the only one to wake with the dawn. Twilight was up. His time spent as a ranch hand leading to him getting up early as well. Though it was unclear if Wild woke him or if he woke Wild, they were both getting up and ready at the same time.

As they came downstairs Time greeted them, his life on the farm making him wake up with the sun. The rest of the chain were still sound asleep it seemed, though Wild could put good money on the Captain or Traveler waking up next. Warriors military background prevented him from sleeping in and Hyrule was to use to life on the road.

“Morning,” Twilight whispered his greeting to Time. “I’m going to go take care of Epona.” And with that he slipped out of the house. Wild made his way over to the kitchen to start working on breakfast.

“Anything I can help with?” Time whispered as he watched Wild get set up. Wild took a moment to look at his slate deciding what to make. They had been moving around so quickly he hadn’t had time to cook anything besides meat and vegetable skewers for the past week. And while he knew his brothers were always grateful for his cooking, he wanted to make them something nice now that he had the time.

Wind was always asking for his crepes. With his mind made up he pulled out different types of fruit from his slate and handed them over to Time. ‘Can you cut these up? I’m going to make some crepes and we can use those for toppings.’ He signed to the older hero.

Time smiled at the champion. “Of course.” He replied as he moved over to the table so he could complete the task without being in Wild’s way.

They worked in tandem to prepare the meal. The only sound in the house being Wild’s cheerful humming as he prepared the batter.

That is until there was a groan from the sleeping heroes. Time looked over just in time to watch the Captain push himself into a sitting position. He took a moment to register his surroundings before delicately removing himself from the sleep pile. Careful not to jostle Wind to much as the boy had very much invaded his space in his sleep. “Morning” he greeted the two as he sat next to Time. He grabbed a knife and started helping with the fruit without asking.

Slowly the rest of the chain awoke from their slumber. Hyrule woke next accidentally waking Legend in the process. The two joining the table as well. Four woke up shortly after and Wind woke when Twilight returned, the sound of the door enough to wake him now that he didn’t have the Captain as a pillow.

The chain settled in for breakfast. Wild distributing crepes and allowing them to pick their own toppings from the fruit Time and Warriors cut as well as butter, honey, and fresh whipped cream. After setting down their food Wild moved to wake up Sky. The first chosen hero would sleep through a thunderstorm if they let him.

As they ate Warriors turned to Wild. “Is there any place in town we can go to restock?” He didn’t know how long they would have in Wild’s Hyrule or if they would need to travel to handle any black-blooded monsters. While the group was in need of a break, he still wanted to make sure they got what they needed while they could.

‘The East Winds is the store in town.’ Wild signed. ‘We can pick up some ingredients there and arrows. Purah’s lab is up the hill. Flora likes to work there when she’s not traveling, and they will probably know if there were any strange monster sightings.’ Wild explained knowing the next question the Captain would ask. It was the norm for the chain to try and locate any signs of the black-blooded monsters or the shadow.

“That’s great. After breakfast a few of us can restock while the rest go to talk to Flora and Purah about monster sightings.” Time was relieved that they seemed to be in, not only a safe place, but also close to a reliable source of information.

“What about potions?” Legend asked. He was worried as the monster attacks in Hyrule’s Hyrule had been relentless, and they had used most of their red and green potions just staying afloat

Wild looked down as he responded. ‘My Hyrule doesn’t sell potions.’ He knew it wasn’t the answer anyone wanted. ‘But I’ll be able to brew up some elixirs while we’re here. The hearty elixirs are just as, if not more effective, as your red potions.’ He looked back at Legend as he signed trying to think of solutions.

“But you don’t have any for magic.” The Vet argued back. He wasn’t mad at Wild. Honestly the fact the kid could brew his own versions of potions was extremely helpful. But he was worried about the lack of green potions not just for himself but mainly for Hyrule. His healing abilities took a lot of magic, as did his fighting style. Hyrule would need green potions eventually.

Wild’s head dropped again. It wasn’t the first time he had to recognize just how different his Hyrule was from theirs.

“We can’t worry about that now.” Twilight said getting the conversation moving again. “Wild being able to make any elixirs will help a lot.” He continued trying to reassure his cub. “Meanwhile we can stock up on arrows and other supplies.”

“We should take this opportunity to get any supplies we can.” Warriors agreed.

“Alright then after breakfast Wild can led the way to the shop and the lab. We can worry about making up elixirs after we talk to Flora.” Time decided. Now that they had a plan the rest of the day should run smoothly.

After breakfast Wild led the way out of the house, but instead of leading them to the bridge he turned to walk to the side of the house. The others started to wonder where he was going until they spotted two men sitting next to the cooking pot outside of Wild’s home.

The older man wearing pink pants and an open blue shirt looked up and smiled at Wild’s approach. “Link! I didn’t know you were back.” The man’s falsetto tone rang through the air as he stood up to greet Wild. “And you have guests.” He commented as he saw the rest of the chain leaving Wild’s house.

‘Hey Bolson.’ Wild signed his greeting. ‘I just got back last night. Do you think you could find eight cots? My brothers are staying with me, and I don’t have enough bedding.’ Wild explained answering Bolson’s unasked question of who the men behind him were.

“Ah! I didn’t know you had brothers. Let alone so many.” Bolson said looking over the group with new eyes. He was quite fond of Link and knew the boy had no living family. However, he always believed in family being the people that you chose and as long as these people were good to Link he wouldn’t ask to many questions. “Karson and I will get right on that for you.”

‘Thank you’ Wild signed before waving goodbye and turning back to face the chain who had gathered awkwardly by his door. ‘They are going to get us some extra cots for tonight.’

“Oh thank the goddess.” Wind cheered. He was thrilled at the idea of sleeping in an actual bed tonight.

“You don’t have to do that.” Time tried to reassure the younger hero that he didn’t have to spend so much money on them when there was no guarantee that they would be staying the night.

Wind squawked in offense but Wild cut them both off. ‘I want to. It will make it feel like it’s your home to.’ He ended with a shy smile, and no one was going to argue with that.

Time smiled warmly at the Champion. He knew exactly what Wild meant, after all he and Malon had tried to make Lon Lon Ranch feel like home to all the boys as well. He understood Wild’s desire to make them feel at home.

Warriors moved to head towards the bridge. “Since we have bedding completed would you mind leading the way to the store.” He asked as he turned back to face Wild. Wild quickly moved to lead the chain across the bridge into the village.

He was leading them over to the entrance of the East Winds when his Sheikah Slate suddenly let out a shrill tone. He pulled the device from his hip and opened it immediately to see the screen flashing.

“Is everything okay?” Sky asked as he and Twilight approached Wild. The rest of the group hung back knowing better than to crowd Wild.

“Don’t know.” Wild whispered, not taking his hands or eyes off the slate. The screen stopped flashing and brought him to the map function. Everything looked normal. Except there was a new symbol on his map. One that looked uncomfortably familiar. “Time!” Wild called out for their unofficial leader.

Time moved quickly to his side, taking Sky’s place. Wild wasted no time showing Time the slate. It was opened to the map feature and zoomed into Hyrule Field. There on the map was a cartoon symbol of a cow’s head flashing in light blue. The same symbol that Lon Lon Ranch used to market their milk. Time pulled the slate closer hoping he was wrong. But it was identical even down to the shade of blue.

“What is this?” He asked, turning to look at Wild his heart racing.

‘I don’t know.’ Wild signed. ‘I’ve never seen it before.’ He looked back at the Lon Lon Ranch symbol shining brightly on his map screen. ‘I’ve never heard it make that sound either.’

“How far away is this?” Time asked looking between the screen and Wild.

“How far is what?” Legend asked tired of being left out of the conversation.

Time looked up to see the rest of the chain looking nervously between his white-knuckled grip on Wild’s slate, an item he rarely let others touch, and Wild’s slightly shaking hands.

He blew out a breath. He didn’t like anything about this situation. “The Lon Lon Ranch symbol just appeased on Wild’s map.”

“But that can’t be.” Twilight said as color drained from his face. “We’re thousands of years in the future.”

“How far away is it.” Warriors quickly stepped into his captain role. Something wasn’t right here. They all turned to face Wild once more.

‘It will take days to get there.’ The group winced at the answers. ‘And that area is full of guardians.’

Time’s hand tightened on the slates handle. If this had something to do with Lon Lon Ranch he couldn’t ignore it. He didn’t care how far or what dangers there were, he was going. He took another look at the map before he turned on his heel. “Then we better start walking.” He started heading towards the town exit when Wild ran in front of him halting his progress.

‘That could take close to a week.’ he signed aggressively.

“If you have another option, I’m all ears.” Time was trying very hard to keep his composure. In any other situation he probably could. But Lon Lon Ranch was his home. It was Marlon’s home. Where she was supposed to be safe. He didn’t know why Lon Lon’s symbol was suddenly appearing on Wild’s map but he had to get there as soon as possible.

Wild paused thinking over what to do. ‘We could teleport.’

“Cub no.” Twilight stepped in. “Last time we were here you said you couldn’t teleport with more than one person.” The last time they were in Wild’s Hyrule Wind had asked if they could teleport to the nearest town and Wild had explained to them the limits of the teleport pads. By himself there was no problem. But adding a guest put a strain on his body. The more guests the hard it would be on Wild physically. A group their size would probably lead to Wild passing out after teleporting them. Something none of them wanted to force him to do unless it was the only option.

‘So, we don’t take the whole group.’ Wild signed cutting off the argument. He held his hand out to Time for the slate. Once in hand he showed them the map. ‘I can teleport Time and myself to this shrine over here.’ He pointed to the Wahgo Katta shrine next to the Riverside stables. ‘We can take two of my horse and make our way to the ruins.’ Wild continue showing them the path they would take. ‘It be close to two hours on horseback. Once we figure this out we’ll come back. It will take a few hours tops.’ He finished his plan while trying to reassure them this was the fastest option.

In any other situation Time would have refused the plan. Anything that put one of the boys in unnecessary risk or separated their group would have been an automatic no. But Hateno was safe, the others would be alright, and something was affecting Lon Lon Ranch. “Are you sure you’ll be alright?” He asked giving Wild his best stern face. The one the boys had named his ‘dad face.’

‘Positive.’ Wild confirmed with a determined nod.

“Alright here’s the plan. Wild and I will go see what this is. Legend, Four, and Hyrule you are in charge of restocking. Warrior, Twilight, Sky and Wind head to,” he paused turning to Wild. “Where did you say Flora would be?”

Wild pointed up through the village. ‘Head that way and up the hill. At the top of the hill is the Tech Lab you can’t miss it.’

“Right. You four head over there and see if there have been any black-blooded monster sightings.” Time finished off his plan.

“Are you sure about this?” Warriors asked. “You’re going days away and taking the only person who has a map. If something goes wrong, we won’t be able to get to you quickly.” He didn’t like this plan. They had no idea what the two of them were rushing into. This was the sort of plan Time would normally help him shut down.

“I don’t have a lot of other options.” Time argued back. They had already wasted plenty of time just trying to figure this out. “We will check in with Wind once we get there.” He knew this wasn’t his best plan but something was telling him he couldn’t wait. He walked over to Wild and placed his hand on his shoulder. “We’ll be back soon.” He said looking over the group before nodding too Wild. The boy waved to the others before tapping something on his screen. The two of them were surrounded by blue glowing lights and then teleported away leaving only swirls of blue lights behind.

“I don’t like this.” Twilight muttered.

“That makes two of us.” Warriors sighed, not looking away from where their two brothers once stood.

“They’ll be alright.” Sky reassured trying to keep a positive attitude, but everyone could feel the shift in the air. Something had just changed. And it was only the beginning.
_________________________________________

For Time he was looking at his boys in Hateno village one moment. Then the world turned electric blue. As the blue faded he found himself and Wild standing at the front of a shrine staring at one of the oddly horse shaped stables in Wild’s Hyrule.

Wild took a step forward before stumbling a little. Time quickly caught the boy’s shoulder to stabilize him. “Are you alright?” He remembered that teleporting with a passenger put a strain on Wild’s body.

‘I’m fine.’ Wild signed as he blinked black spots from his vision. He would be fine. Normally after a teleport he was ready for action. But now he felt the same way he would after standing too quickly. The black dots danced around his vision but were quickly clearing up.

He righted himself before leading the way to the stable. He ran up to the counter to talk to Ember.

“Link! It’s good to see you again. It’s been a while.” Ember called as he approached. His call alerted the other stable workers who paused in their work to wave at Wild.

‘Sorry I’ve been traveling.’ Wild signed as he waved back to a few of the workers. ‘I’ll need to take two horses with me.’

“Two?” Amber was surprised as he hadn’t seen the princess and he knew the boy normally travled alone. He looked past the hero in front of him to look for the boy’s traveling companion.

He spotted a man approaching the counter. The man wore a full set of armor, a rarity to find nowadays. He had a scar over his right eye and facial tattoos, all giving the man a striking and imposing appearance. Yet he made his way to Link’s side like he belonged there.

‘Ya’ Link signed drawling Ember’s attention back to him. ‘Traveling with family.’ That took Ember by surprise. He didn’t know Link had any family. The boy never mentioned anyone before. But then again Ember, like most stable workers, didn’t ask too many questions of their guests beyond do you like bananas?

Speaking of. “Well it’s nice to meet you, would you like some bananas?” Ember asked turning to face the man again.

The man blinked while Link tried hard not to laugh as his face displayed his mirth over the situation. “No. Thank you.” The man, not a yoga clan member, responded. “Now about the horses.”

“Right right. Link which horses am I pulling for you?” Ember asked, turning back to face Link.

Wild paused as he thought over which horses would be best for their situation. While he loved Phantom the giant black horse was too slow and too easy to spot when traveling Hyrule Field. Princess, his pure white mare, would be a good choice but he had loaned her to Flora before he left. Though Flora was adamant about giving him Princess back once she found her own horse. (They had heard rumors of a golden horse that he knew she was fascinated by) that left Carmel, his brown mare with a reddish mane, Seafoam, his all blue stallion, and Shortcake, his pink mare with a blond mane. Shortcake was the gentlest of the trio, and if he was with one of the less confident riders he would have picked her in a heartbeat. But Time would be fine with a more unruly mount. Plus, the other two were faster.

‘Seafoam and Carmel please.’ Wild signed and Ember nodded.

“Alright I’ll go grab them for you.” Time watched the man leave in the opposite direction of the three horses the stable housed.

“Wild where is he-”

His question was cut off by Wild who turned to him and signed, “horse magic.’ And that was all the explanation he gave before Ember came back around with two horses. Wild quickly moved to the blue horse but Time had to and chuckle.

Both horses were obviously well loved and taken care of. Seafoam had on a rather extravagant set of gear with bright colors, gems, and fabrics all over and even a feather on top of it’s head. Carmel mane was overly long and had wildflowers twisted and braided into it. They were both obviously Wild’s horses. Time chuckled and shook his head fondly as he walked over to mount Carmel.

‘What?’ Wild signed cocking his head curiously at Time. The older man just shook his head again.

“Nothing. Shall we get started?” Time asked holding his hand out to the path in front of them.

Wild nodded and started his horse into a walk. Once they pulled away from the stable and the travelers arriving, he drew Seafoam into a canter and started quickly moving down the path. He wasn’t sure if they should break into a full gallop. He knew Time wanted to get to the symbol on the map as quick as possible but there were still guardians in the area. Speaking of.

Time had Carmel following closely behind Wild and had planned to pull up beside the boy once they got away from the stable. But Wild quickly led them off the path and up the hill next to the stable.

“Wild?” He called unsure where they were heading but following anyway. Wild pointed to the other hill. The path out of the stable had two hills on either side. The one Wild had led them to was the southern one and he pointed to the Northern one.

Time wasn’t sure what Wild was pointing at until they crested the top of their hill, then he could spot it. There was a mechanical spider like object moving around the top of the north hill. It’s eye constantly searching the area around it.

A guardian. Wild had told them all about the destructive machinery before. Had shown them the scars that littered his body from his fateful encounter with them. Wild always did his best to lead the chain away from guardian locations when they were in his Hyrule. They had seen them from afar and so far had been lucky enough not to fight the autonomous machines.

Time knew it was foolish to hope they would never have to. Luck had never been on his side like that. But he couldn’t help it. The scars on Wild were horrific enough to look at, he didn’t want to watch as one of his boys was injured by those machines. Wild had done an amazing job so far keeping the group away from them, Time could only hope their luck held.

Wild turned in his saddle to face him. ‘He only patrols that hill, but if we get to close he’ll spot us.’ Time understood the wide birth Wild was giving the creature.

“Good call.” Wild smiled back at him. There was always something about getting approval from the older members of the chain that filled him with warmth.

The two road on farther into Hyrule field, rejoining the path once they were away from the guardian on the hill. As they approached the spot where the Lon Lon Ranch symbol had appeared on the map, Wild noticed something. “The ranch ruins”

“What?” Time asked as he pulled his horse beside Wild’s. The boy turned to look back at him.

‘I completely forgot but there are the ruins of a ranch up ahead. It was destroyed during the calamity. I never gave it much thought. It felt familiar but in the same way everything in Hyrule field does.’

The ruins in the field always filled him with this vague feeling of sadness but the context was just out of reach. A thought blowing in the wind. A phantom familiarity that wasn’t truly his anymore. It wasn’t just the guardians that made him avoid the field. ‘I forgot about it until we visited Lon Lon Ranch’ he paused as he thought about his next words. ‘They have a similar lay out.’

Time took all of that in with mixed emotions. On one hand his and Malon’s ranch had potentially survived for centuries if not longer, as no one knew just how far down the timeline Wild was. And that was exciting. Malon’s legacy lasting that long. Truly amazing. On the other hand, the Ranch had been destroyed. He didn’t blame Wild, he would never blame Wild for what happened during the Calamity. But he wasn’t sure what he would feel walking into the ruins of his home.

“Perhaps that is why the Lon Lon Symbol appeared there…” they still had no clue what they were walking into. Maybe there was no cause for concern.

But as they drew close, they heard a frantic beeping sound. Wild stiffened then swung his head around to look for the guardian, but there wasn’t one. They weren’t being hunted. So what was?

Wild swung off Seafoam, he didn’t want to risk his horses being blasted by the active guardian somewhere in their vicinity. Time quickly followed. The two making their way closer to the ranch ruins and the beeping sound.

When they came up on the ruins they saw a guardian stomping around the area. Its body lit up red as it stalked around looking for its prey. But it was turned away from them and most of the ranch. The crumbling tower and old corral were behind it as its focus was on what remained of the farm house.

Wild could make out the form of two bokoblins on horseback kicking up a fuss on the other end of the house. But the guardian wasn’t shooting at them, even though they were shrieking like it was. No, the guardian was hunting something else.

Then the guardian fired. It’s laser shooting over the top of the farmhouse ruins and into the field near the bokoblins. And a woman screamed.

Time’s heart dropped. He’d recognize that voice anywhere, and he had never heard it that terrified before. He never wanted to again. “Malon!”

Time was off racing towards the guardian. He had no plan on how to deal with it. Nor did he know how Malon was here. His only thought was to get that thing away from Malon.

His shout had garnered him the attention of the guardian. It whipped its head around to face him, it’s eye locking onto him and the terrifying pinging sound starting up and quickly gaining in speed.

Time had to think fast but his eye was dragged to a flash of red hair. Malon sat up from behind the broken-down wall of the farm house. Her face streaked with tears and eyes wide with terror. The mechanical nightmare was moving away from her and straight towards her husband, and all she could do was watch.

Yet Time was relieved. Malon was alright. Now he needed a plan to defeat this thing. The beeping had reached a fever point, and the guardian was too close to dodge. Time went to grab his shield hoping it would be enough.

“Get down!” Wild screamed.

Time didn’t even think before following the boy’s instructions. Dropping down to his knee.

Wild charge forward after Time. He watched the guardian turn towards them and lock it’s sights in the older hero. He saw Malon raise her head up as fear seeped into his veins. But he had to shake it off. Kill the guardian then think about how he almost lost more loved ones to these beasts.

He tapped his slate pulling out his ancient arrows. He only had four left but that would be fine. He’d make this in one shot. He had to.

He yelled at Time to drop and the older hero did. Wild continued his run forward. He ran straight at Time, using the older hero as a springboard to launch himself into the air and towards the guardian. He drew his bow and the world around him slowed down. He could see the energy for the guardian’s beam building in its eye as he released his ancient arrow right into the glowing orb.

The arrow found its mark striking the guardian straight through its eye. The world came speeding back into focus as Wild’s feet hit the ground. The guardian’s body shuddered before it exploded into parts.

Time stood back up, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Wild killed the machine with one shot. But his brain was quickly wiped of all thoughts as Malon jumped over the ruined wall and ran straight to him. He stood up and caught her in his arms and held her close as she sobbed.

Wild started to approach the couple when they all heard an angry squeal. They forgot about the bokoblins. With the guardian gone the two horse riding bokoblins were riding straight for them.

Wild turned to see one of the silver bokoblin drawing an arrow back on its bow. Wild was faster knocking his own arrow and firing at the bokoblin. He hit it square in the head knocking it from its saddle.

Before he could look for the second a sharp pain erupted in his shoulder.

“Wild!” Malon screamed as she watched the boy get shot through the shoulder.

Time drew his own bow and shot the second bokoblin from his mount. “I’ll handle them. Get him behind cover.” Time told her. Nodding to the ruined wall she had already hid behind once. He then took off towards the bokoblin that had shot Wild, as it was the closer of the two.

Malon moved quickly to Wild’s side. ‘I’m fine.’ The boy tried to sign.

“No, you’re not. You have an arrow in your shoulder. Now move.” Malon commanded as calmly as she could trying to move Wild down and behind their limited cover.

Before she could the other bokoblin rose back to its feet and squealed at them as it lined up its next shot. Malon moved fast grabbing Wild shield from his back and putting it between them and the shot just in time to block the bokoblin’s arrow.

As she lowered the shield Wild drew back another shot and released it. The arrow in his shoulder had struck his left shoulder, the one he held the bow in. Lining up the shot hurt but he had had far worse as he fired his arrow straight into the bokoblin’s head for a second time.

Time had made quick work of the first bokoblin. It was a silver but between the biggoron sword, his experience and the bokoblins lack of shield or close rage weaponry it didn’t take him long. It also helped that these monsters weren’t infected. A blessing. As soon as he finished, he turned on his heel and rushed to finish the second. Wild’s shot knocked the Bokoblin down and Time slid in and cut the creature in half.

With a quick look around to make sure there were no more surprises, Time turned his attention to Wild and Malon. With the danger gone, Wild had finally sat down. Malon was kneeling next to him looking over his wounded shoulder. Time moved quickly to join them.

The arrowhead was sticking out of the front of Wild’s shoulder. At least it would be easy to remove. Malon was fretting over the boy as Time approached.

Time kneeled in front of Wild placing his hand on the boy’s good shoulder. “I’ve got one red potion left. We’ll have to pull it out though.” Wild grimaced but nodded knowing what had to be done.

“How can I help.” Malon asked. She trusted her husband’s assessment of the situation. If he said they had to rip the arrow out, then that’s what they would do. She had experience with treating some injuries, both from living on a ranch and Time coming home with various injuries.

Wild offered her his hand to hold with a pained smile. “Hold his hand. Wild pretty good at not moving during things like this.” Time said as he moved to snap the tail of the arrow off.

“The fact that you’ve done something like this before to him is not comforting.” Malon informed her husband as she took Wild’s hand tightly in her own. Her voice softened as she looked at the boy. “I’ve got you.”

When Time had first brought the boys home it was a little strange. But Malon had instantly loved each of them. Finding out about Twilight being their descendent was a surprise but in the best way. And yet with every letter her husband sent and every visit she received, she had come to think of all the boys as hers, not just Twilight. These were her boys. She knew Time felt the same way. This was the first time, however she had to witness one of the boys being injured, and she hated it. She didn’t know how Time could handle this being a regular occurrence.

Wild smiled back at her but it quickly turned to a grimace and his hand reactively squeezed hers as Time pulled the arrow out of his shoulder. “There.” Time said as he threw the arrow away and pulled a red potion from his bag. “Malon can you put pressure on his wound?” He asked as he grabbed the potion. Malon quickly placed her hands on Wild’s shoulder applying pressure to both sides of the wound. His blood dyeing her hands red. His whimpers filling her ears.

“It’s alright honey. It’s almost over.” She tried to sooth as Time lifted the potion to Wild’s lips. The boy moved to hold the potion himself with his good arm and took a swallow. The magic instantly healed the hole in his arm. He handed the half drank potion back to Time. Malon wanted to argue that he should drink the whole thing but resisted when Time took it back without complaint.

The three of them sat there for a moment, processing what had occurred. Time pulled out a cloth from his bag and handed it to Malon to clean off her hands. She gave him a weak but grateful smile in return as she began the process of removing Wild’s blood from her skin.

“Malon.” Time started and then stopped, still wrapping his head around his wife’s appearance. “How- how did you get here?”

“I don’t know.” She said, handing the cloth back to him. “I was in the kitchen cleaning up breakfast, the next thing I know I’m falling through the floor and the ranch is in ruins and that thing was beeping at me. Luckily, I was able to duck down before it shot me.” Malon tried to remember as many details as she could. Her voice and body started to tremble as she recounted what happened.

Time quickly pulled his wife into his arms and held her close rubbing her back and trying to comfort her. “I’ve got you.”

Malon let out a sob. “It wouldn’t leave me alone. It kept searching and beeping and shooting that laser.” She pulled away a bit to look up at Time. “But I knew you’d come. You always come when I need you.”

Time pulled her back kissing her forehead. He was so grateful she wasn’t hurt. “If I knew it was you, I would have gotten her faster.” He knows Wild had led him in the quickest and safest path. There was no faster option. But that didn’t stop him from wishing he could have gotten to Malon quicker. That he could live up to her faith in him.

Malon just shook her head. “You’re here now.”

Wild smiled at the couple but stayed quite wanting to give them the illusion of privacy. But they needed to move. Hyrule field was never truly safe. He moved his hand to wave to Time to get his attention.

Once Time noticed the boy waving at him, he gently nudged Malon so that she would turn to look at Wild to. Once he had both of their attention Wild started signing.

‘We should head back. There are more guardians in the field.’

Time nodded. “What’s the quickest way back to Hateno?” He wanted to get Malon to somewhere safe as fast as possible.

‘I can teleport the three of us back there.’ Wild started to sign as he stood up, but he stumbled and almost fell back down. Between teleporting Time with him and the blood loss from the arrow he wasn’t feeling the best. The potion helped but since he didn’t drink the whole thing, he was still feeling some fatigue.

Malon moved away from Time. Standing quickly to help stabilize Wild. Time quickly followed her. “Can you handle teleporting with two extra people?” Time asked. Wild was about to reassure him he could, even though he wasn’t sure if that was true, when Malon cut him off.

“What do you mean?” She asked Time before turning back to face Wild. “Could teleporting hurt you?” She asked fretting over him.

‘No’ Wild signed but was once again undermined, this time by Time.

“By himself no but adding on passengers is a physical drain for him.” Wild started to protest again when Time sent him the dreaded ‘dad look.’ “Don’t think I didn’t see you stumble after you teleported just the two of us.” Wild’s hands stilled. He didn’t have anything to say to that.

“Okay so no teleporting the three of us at once.” Malon concluded, turning back to face her husband but her arms still wrapped around Wild. “What are our other options?”

Time stopped to think. “It would take days to walk back to Hateno.” He thought aloud bringing his hand to his chin. “Wild could teleport us one at a time.” He said looking at Wild for confirmation.

Wild angrily shook his head ‘that would leave someone behind in Hyrule Field. Alone and vulnerable.’

“You’re right that’s not something we can do.” Time agreed. “Unless the person who stayed behind was somewhere safe.”

‘The stable.’ Wild signed. ‘We can ride back to the stable. Then I can teleport one of you to Hateno while the other waits at the stable. There’s a shrine right next to the stable so it won’t take me long to return for whoever is left behind.’

Time smiled at Wild. It was the best solution they had. He didn’t like that it required Wild to play taxi for them as he knew it would put a strain on the boy’s body. However, it was the fastest and safest way to get Malon to safety and to reunite with the rest of the boys. “Great idea Wild.”

Wild felt his chest warm with pride over the praise Time gave him. He then raised his hands to his mouth and let out a sharp whistle. The sound of whinnying and pounding hooves could be heard as Seafoam and Carmel came galloping towards them.

Malon gasped in delight as the two horses came towards them. “Are they both yours?” She asked, turning to look at Wild. The boy beamed with pride as he signed his response.

‘Yep. The blue one is Seafoam and the brown one is Carmel. I own three other horses as well.’ He signed happily as the two horses stopped in front of them. He was always happy to talk about his horses and was quite excited to show them to Malon.

He had hoped to show them off to Time, Twilight, and Warriors as they were the experienced riders of the group. While Warriors had never trained his Epona he was still quite fond of horses. Time and Twilight on the other hand were ranchers and he desperately wanted their proud and awed responses to his horses. He never dreamed he’d have the opportunity to show his horses to Malon. The woman who raised the first Epona and started the legendary bond between the Links and their beloved steed.

Malon walked over to Carmel and petted the horse’s snout as she looked over the creature. “I can tell they are well loved and well trained.” She said as she ran her fingers through the horse’s flower filled mane. She turned over her shoulder to look at Wild. “You’ve done an excellent job with them.”

Wild beamed and his chest filled with warmth. Malon was impressed with his horse! ‘If we knew you were going to be here, I would have brought another for you. You’d love Shortcake and Phantom. Princess is with Flora right now.’ The boy excitedly signed.

Time chuckled watching the boy fawn over Malon’s praise before stepping up to Carmel’s side. “Don’t worry about it Cub. It’s not the first time we’ve shared a horse. Besides it just means that Malon can’t race us back to the stable. Believe me we’d never win.” Wild turned to look at him with a bit of surprise on his face while Malon looked at her husband with fond pride. He knew her well. “Believe me Cub. The only one of us that might be able to beat her, and that’s a pretty big might, is Twilight.” Time was not ashamed to admit that his Wife was the better rider.

“Well, I’m glad you know me so well.” Malon teased him. “You know this means I’m riding in front.” She said watching Time grab hold of the saddle.

“Oh, I already knew that.” Time said as he hosted himself up on to Carmel but slid back in the saddle so that Malon could sit in front of him. He held his hand out as an offer to help her up. He knew she didn’t need it, but he still liked to help her.

Malon rolled her eyes fondly but took his hand anyways and swung up into the saddle as well. She got comfortable and picked up Carmel’s reigns. Time watched as Wild turned to mount Seafoam. Once the boy’s attention was off of them he wrapped his arms around his wife and held her close.

“I promise I’ll make this up to you. I won’t let you be in such danger again.” He whispered into her ear. Malon relaxed against him and rested one of her hands on top of his forearm.

“This isn’t your fault. And you came when I need you. There is nothing to make up for. Besides,” she pulled away and looked at him over her shoulder. “I get to spend more time with you and the boys. That’s a gift to me.” Time smiled at his wife with love. How did he get so lucky.

Wild whistled breaking their little bubble as he pulled Seafoam back on to the path leading them back to the Riverside stable. Malon quickly pulled Carmel into action and moved to ride beside Wild. “So Wild, how did you get some many horses?” Malon was curious what Wild did to buy so many animals.

Wild smiled and happily told Malon about how all his horses were once wild and how he caught and tamed them. They spent the nearly two-hour ride with Wild telling her stories and Malon asking questions and laughing along. He told her how Seafoam was his first horse tamed near the dueling peak stables. How he found Carmel near the Outskirts Stables. How he rescued Shortcake from her bokoblin rider on the Rist Peninsula. Finding Princess near the Sanidin Park Ruins, and finding Phantom, his giant horse, in the Taobab Grasslands. He was telling her about how taming the giant horse was the easy part but riding past two lynels was terrifying.

Time’s interest peaked here. “How did you get by them?” He asked curiously.

Wild went on to explain about his lynel mask and how he had worn it while riding Phantom through the valley and barely avoided setting the Lynels off.

As Wild weaved his tales he noticed the Time was constantly scanning the area. He had one hand resting against Malon’s stomach holding onto his wife while his other rested on his bow. He was on high alert. Higher than Wild had ever seen the old man. Wild kept an eye out for any surprises but he also tried to keep the atmosphere light. Time was stressed and Malon had a terrifying introduction to his world. He wanted to try and show that his homeland wasn’t a terrible place but was quite beautiful.

The conversation ended when Malon caught sight of the stable. She let out a laugh looking at the horse shaped building. “Wild what is that?” She asked with laughter.

Wild smiled. ‘It’s the stable we were heading to. They’re all over my Hyrule and take care of the horses and travelers.’ Wild answered

“A ranch and inn all in one.” Malon smiled looking at the structure. “Honey we might have to move here I think I found our true calling.” She joked. Time rolled his eyes and commented back something about Talon never allowing it, but it was lost to Wild.

Wild felt warmth and sadness fill him at once. On the one hand it was amazing to hear Malon say she’d even consider living in his Hyrule. He knew his Hyrule wasn’t everyone’s favorite place. Between the long distances, roaming bosses, and changing weather, he knew the others weren’t always fond of being here. So, it was nice to hear someone praise it. On the other his heartaches knowing that Malon and Time couldn’t stay here. They would eventually all go back to their timelines and leave him alone. Yes, he had people here who he loved dearly but it wasn’t the same as having his brothers around.

They dismounted once they reached the stable, Ember coming back out to take the horse back. Malon gave them both a pat before they left while Wild gave them Endura carrots for their good work. Ember took both horses back behind the stable where they seemingly disappeared. Malon pointed and looked at Wild in shock and confusion while Time snorted. “Horse magic?” He asked Wild with a raised eyebrow.

Wild nodded along. ‘Horse magic.’

“I have so many questions.” Malon declared as she turned to fully face the two. Her eyes lighting up with excitement.

“First let’s get back to the others.” Time was just as curious as his wife, but he wanted her safe more than he wanted answers. The stable was a good start but Wild’s home with the rest of the boys felt far safer. “Cub, are you good to teleport?” He asked, turning his attention to Wild.

The boy nodded though Time had a feeling that he would say yes even if he wasn’t ready. He blew out a deep breath, one day he’d have to talk to the boy about his sacrificial tendencies. “Then you and Malon can go first. I’ll wait here.”

Malon looked at the stable with mild disappointment. She would have loved to poke around a bit to figure out this horse magic. Yet the opportunity to see the rest of her boys and see more of Wilds world was far more exciting. She also knew her husband would never go first and leave her here alone so there was no reason to try and argue. Besides, Wild probably knew something about this horse magic.

Wild nodded once more before signing. ‘Don’t go anywhere.’ With a playfully stern look to Time causing the old man to laugh. While Wild and Hyrule were the worst about it, all Links had a predisposition to wander. It was just rare for Time to be the one getting the warning.

“I’m not going anywhere.” He laughed before pulling Malon into a hug and a quick kiss. “I love you.”

Malon smiled back at him. “I love you to.”

As they pulled apart Wild stepped forward his slate ready in one hand and gave Malon a bow and offered his other hand, the way a knight would to a lady of high standing. Malon laughed, “why thank you sir knight.” She joked as she placed her hand in his. Wild raised his head with a smile. He gave a wave to Time before hitting the button on his slate and teleporting him and Malon away.

Twilight sat facing the shrine in Hateno. He was slowly starting to lose his mind. It had been over five hours since his mentor and his cub had left them. They had yet to call and check in like they promised, and Twilight’s nerves were starting to wear thin.

He, Warriors, Sky, and Wind had made their way up to the Ancient Tech Lab up in the hill. Wild was right, Flora was there along with Purah. But besides being excited to hear about Wild’s return they didn’t have any more information. Flora knew there were black-blooded monsters around but the sightings were spread out across Hyrule so she had no true direction to point them in.

Wind wanted to explore the area, and while Flora told them the area was mostly safe Warriors was able to dissuade Wind from doing so as he was the only one with a way to communicate with Wild and Time.

Everyone was a bit on edge. They had no idea what Time and Wild were heading toward. It could very well be a trap for Time. Lon Lon Ranch shouldn’t be here and the fact its symbol had appeared so far from them. Time would always rush to take care of his loved ones this could be a blatant trap for him.

Everyone was trying to distract themselves from their worry over their missing two members. Warriors and Wind had returned to the house and were sparing outside. Sky had returned as well but was sitting under the tree whittling while talking to Bolson and Karson, having stricken up a conversation when he used the cooking pot to make lunch for the chain.

He knew Four, Legend, and Hyrule had restocked their supplies and returned to Wild’s home. Four studying the weapons on the wall, while Legend took the time to clean and inspect his gear, a task Hyrule was helping with.

But Twilight couldn’t wait at the house. He had to do something, but the only thing he could do was wait. So, he would wait where they would return. He didn’t have any high hopes for Wild calling to check in like they said they would. When the second and the third hour came and went, he knew the two had gotten distracted by something or worse into some fight. They wouldn’t be calling. And if they did, he knew someone would come and tell him. So now he waits.

And his waiting paid off as the shrine lit up a bright blue as Wild teleported to it.

Twilight stood ready to help if needed, but he wasn’t expecting who appeared.

_________________________________________

Malon’s eyes were wide and her feet unsteady as they arrived Myahm Agana. She didn’t know what she was expecting when Wild and Time were discussing teleporting. She had seen her husband use his ocarina to warp to different places before, but she never joined him. However, disintegrating into blue light and reappearing was not what she had in mind.

Wild used their joined hands to steady her as she stumbled even though he was swaying himself. Malon righted herself and moved to check on the boy who looked a little out of it when a voice called to her.

“Malon?” Twilight called as he ran up to the two.

“Twilight.” Malon turned happy to see her descendant.

“How are you here?” Twilight asked as he looked the two over. “Cub your arm!” He called as he caught sight of the blood on Wild’s tunic. “Are you alright? What happened? Where’s Time?”

Wild pulled away from them. ‘I’m alright.’ He signed though there was a bit of a shake to his hand. ‘I’m going to get Time.’

“Wait Cub! What happened?” Twilight asked again reaching for the boy, but he had already teleported away. The young man turned back to Malon still looking worried.

“Oh, it’s okay Darling.” Malon soothed cupping his cheek in her hand. She knew he was worried about his brother and most likely frustrated with himself for not being able to help. You know one Link you know them all. “We decided to travel one at a time to put less of a strain on Wild.” She explained calmly. “Time is fine. Wild,” she paused remembering what happened at the ruined ranch. “He got shot with an arrow but he’s okay for now. But don’t you worry once they’re both back here you can help me bully that boy into taking a rest.”

Twilight gave her a weak but warm smile. He was still worried but that was okay. He’d feel a lot better once Wild and Time were in his sight.

Just then the shrine lit up again. The blue lines started to swirl together. Then Wild and Time appeared on the pedestal. Time, used to warping and portals landed just fine, but Wild swayed on his feet before his body started to tip to the side.

Malon and Twilight called out for the boy, but Time moved fast catching the boy before he could hit the ground. Wild groaned and reached a hand up to rest against his aching head.

Time placed his hands under Wild’s knees and shoulders and lifted the boy into his arms. Malon and Twilight moving closer to inspect the boy.

Wild started to sign. ‘I’m alright. Just tired and dizzy. And my head hurts.’ His hands were slower and less coordinated than usual.

Time wanted to say a lot of things but instead tried to be gentle with him. “Next time tell me you need a break. We could have waited at the stable for a bit before rushing back here.” He knew the boy had only been trying to get Malon to safety as quickly as possible and then reunite the couple and the chain, but he needed to slow down and take care of himself to.

Wild groaned a bit in acknowledgment. Time smiled down fondly at the boy before looking up. Twilight was next to him looking down at Wild with worry. He could tell his protégée was about to crawl out of his skin with the need to do something.

“Pup, can you lead the way back to Cub’s house?” Time probably could have found the way himself, but he knew this would allow Twilight to feel like he was doing something. The boy snapped to attention.

“Of course.” He said, turning to lead them towards Wild’s home. Time hated just how serious Twilight became at times, but he understood.

“We get to see Wild’s home?” Malon asked, lightening the mood a bit.

“You’ll love it.” Time said as he walked next to his wife. They walked through the area full of block like houses and he watched as Malon looked each over trying to figure out which one could be Wild’s, but they passed them all and continued walking.

When they got to the bridge, he heard Malon gasp a bit as her eyes set on Wild’s house. “Oh, it really is charming.” Malon smiled at Time and the boy in his arms.

In front of the house Warriors and Wind were sparing but paused when they saw Twilight crossing the bridge. He wouldn’t be back unless. Then they spotted Time with Wild in his arms.

“What happened?” Warriors called as he ran towards them, drawing the attention of the rest of the chain. Sky getting up from his spot near the tree and Legend opening the door to the house with Hyrule and Four behind him.

That’s when Sky caught sight of the fourth person. “Malon?”

Malon waved at the boys once they crossed the bridge. “Hello, it’s good to see y’all again.”

The group quickly descended into pandemonium. Hyrule ran over to check over Wild who was insisting he was fine, while Twilight argued that he was obviously not. Warriors and Legend came over to ask Time what had happened and how Malon arrived. While Sky, Four and Wind flocked to Malon asking if she was okay.

There was a lot of noise and chaos but through it all Malon caught Time’s eye and the two shared a fond smile. While today had been terrifying, Malon couldn’t help but be grateful. She was with her husband and their boys. She got to have extra time with their strange little family and she couldn’t be more grateful to the powers at be.

Notes:

did I use this as an excuse to talk about my horses in botw, yes, yes I did.
also Malon is here hurray!!
side note: i actually timed in universe how long it would take to reach the ranch ruins in botw from both the riverside stable (1:40) and the wetland stables (2:20) which is wild because the wetlands looks closer but the river gets in the way (plus there are more guardians and a bokoblin coming from that direction.

I still want to write more about Malon reuniting with the boys. maybe the next chapter will focus on Malon settling in and spending time with the Chain before the next guest arrives.
or
maybe I'll right a second story just about the down time in between trips and the next chapter will be about the next loved one arriving. either the bunny boy or the cucoo
let me know which you prefer in the comments.
thank you so much for reading my story, i hope you like it.

Chapter Text

Once they got home Time started to lead Wild up to his bed, but Wild began to protest.

Time shook his head at the wiggling boy in his arms. He needed to lay down and relax, everyone was safe now. Malon was safe now, and Time couldn’t be more grateful for that. He owed her safety to Wild. There was no way he would have gotten to his wife in time without the boy, nor could he have defeated the guardian on his own. At least not fast enough to avoid the deadly blow.

Wild had more than earned his rest. Even if he hadn’t Time would still insist on it. His boys need to learn to take better care of themselves.

“Wild you need to rest.” Time argued with the boy as he started to make his way upstairs.

‘Fine! But not up there.’ Wild signed point his finger towards the loft. Now Time was confused. Where else would Wild rest?

Time paused in carrying him up the stairs and gave Wild a raised eyebrow, waiting for him to explain. Wild pointed to the weapons nook. Time followed the direction and saw that the weapons nook was now full of the cots Wild had requested earlier that day. It seems like the rest of the boys had made themselves at home here.

With a fond sign he carried Wild over to the cots and laid the boy down. “Alright you can nap down here.” He was about to walk away when Wild caught his attention again.

‘No, I’m sleeping down here. The Loft is for you and Malon.” Wild signed. Time was taken aback by the offer. He wasn’t the only one as Malon had come up behind him.

“Oh Darling no, we can’t take your bed.” Malon wasn’t about to put one of her boys out, especially when he was being kind enough to allow them all to stay.

“Nah he’s right.” Warriors called drawing the couples’ attention to him. “A lady like Malon deserves some privacy.” He said, flourishing his statement with a bow. “Besides the cub seems to already be in a cuddle pile.” He snickered, pointing behind them.

While their backs were turned Twilight and followed Wild onto the collection of mattresses and was fretting over him. Sky had crawled in along the other side pulling Wild down for a nap with him. There was no winning and no escaping for Wild.

Legend stepped forward and held his hand out to Wild. Wild gave him a confused look which Legend met with a roll of his eyes. “Your tunic has blood on it. I’ll go get it out.” Wild signed a quick ‘thank you’ before tapping his slate. His top changed to a well-worn shirt. His tunic appeared in his hand, and he handed it over to Legend.

Malon smiled down at the boys. It was so good to see them again. She gentle grabbed Time’s hand and led him away from the boys. Hyrule walked past them and flopped down on the cots near Wild’s and Sky’s legs and used the two as pillows.

Time followed her easily until they were out of the house. Warriors trailed behind before grabbing Wind and pulling the boy back into some more playful sparing. Legend and Four followed heading for the small pond to remove the blood from Wild’s clothes, but Legend made sure they were close enough to watch and heckle the sparing pair.

Malon made her way towards the cooking pot near the house before turning to face her husband. “Wild is normally the one who cooks for you all, correct?” She asked with a playfully raised eyebrow.

Time sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. He knew he wasn’t much help in the kitchen, he was getting better, but he still had a lot to learn. A trait many of his fellow heroes shared. Sure, some of them had a meal or two they had learned to make, but no one in the group could cook like Wild. Thankfully the boy enjoyed the activity and didn’t mind feeding eight other people every day.

“I’d like to make dinner tonight. Repay him for the help today and let him rest.” Malon knew Wild was the only reason Time had reached her in time. More importantly he was the only reason she hadn’t watched the guardian blow a hole through her husband. She was also aware of how much of a toll transporting them had taken on Wild’s body. She wanted to repay his kindness.

She may not know why she was here, but she wanted to be helpful while she was. Who knows when her boys will be taken from her again.

Time smiled at her fondly. “If you want to do that we better move fast. If Wild wakes up before it’s done, he’s going to jump in to help and there will be no stopping him.”

“Well then, do you know where we can get some ingredients?” Malon asked with a determined look in her eyes.

“The East Winds sells a few food items.” Legend said slipping over to join their conversation. “I was in there earlier today. Need help remembering where it is old man?” He teased Time placing a hand on his cocked hip.

Time rolled his eye. “I have a better memory than you would believe.” His thoughts briefly drifted to Termina before he shook them off. He offered his arm to Malon and she waved goodbye to Legend as the two set out over the bridge.

As they made their way into the small village Malon allowed her eyes to wander around. The first time she walked through here her attention was split between Wild and looking for his home. Now she could take in the cozy little village.

She watched the children running around the town as the villagers travled to and from the fields and shops. It really was a lovely place. While it wasn’t Lon Lon Ranch, she was happy that Wild had found such a peaceful place to call home.

Time led the way over to a building with a big pot on its roof. He opened the door allowing Malon to enter first before he followed. The store owner called out a greeting to the two as they made their way inside.

Time looked over at the front part of the store to see that the shelf’s were empty. A quick look at the signs saying ‘Arrows’, and ‘Bomb Arrows’ told him exactly what Legend, Hyrule, and Four had bought this morning.

Malon made her way towards the back of the store finding milk, two types of mushrooms, eggs, and rice. She had to do a double take when looking at the milk before letting out a delighted laugh.

Time turned his attention back to his wife at the sound. He walked over to her as she picked up one of the bottles of milk and turned it to face him. “Honey, look!” There on the bottle was the familiar design of a blue cartoonish cow head. A smile broke across Time’s face as well, matching his wife’s delighted grin.

Seeing the ranch destroyed today was hard but seeing that Lon Lon Ranch was still being remembered in some form was exciting. Even after thousands of years their home was still remembered.

“Well, we have to use this.” Malon said, handing him the bottle. “I have to make sure the quality hasn’t dropped.” She joked, but Time knew how serious she was about the quality of the milk leaving their ranch.

Malon turned back to her options thinking over what to make for dinner. “Do you think Wild has salt in his kitchen?”

“I would be shocked if he didn’t.” Time responded. If it wasn’t in the kitchen, he definitely had some in his slate. The trick was getting it from him without alerting the boy to someone else making dinner.

Malon nodded as she moved to inspect the mushrooms. With the milk she would be able to make some Cream of Mushroom Soup for the boys tonight. She finished her selection and the two paid for their groceries before heading back outside.

Time took the bags the shopkeeper had given them and offered his arm once more to Malon. She gave a fond roll of her eyes but indulged him nonetheless. They had missed each other.

However, a man walking around in a full set of armor drew attention. Malon was well aware of this even in their time. Her Link got very different receptions if he journeyed with her to castle town wearing his armor vs his farm clothes. He was never treated poorly, but if the guards saw his armor, they were more likely to put her husband to work. So, when someone called out for her husband she was only a little surprised.

“Time! You’re back! Does that mean Wild has returned as well?” A voice called from behind them. They stopped and turned to see who was calling for them. There hurrying through town as quickly as possible without breaking into a full run was a woman. She had long blonde hair, that had a braid along the top of her head like a crown and was wearing a blue and white shirt and black pants.

“Princess Zelda.” Time called lowing his head in a sight bow. Malon following his lead and giving a shallow curtsy.

She was surprised at the girl’s identity. She had only ever seen their Zelda dressed in royal gowns. The only time she had seen the royal dressed differently was when she was disguised. Every now and then a male Sheikah would come to the ranch asking for her husband’s help. It had taken a few visits before Malon had caught on to their Royal Highnesse’s secret.

Then again this was Wild’s Zelda, and after seeing some of their Hyrule for herself she could see why the royalty might choose to wear more practical traveling clothes.

“Oh, stop that.” Zelda said as she approached. “I already told you, you don’t have to bow to me.” She huffed as she stopped in front of them. “There isn’t much of a monarchy anymore. Besides I know it’s confusing with each of you having your own Zeldas. I truly don’t mind being called Flora.”

Truth be told, the princess actually enjoyed it. It felt like she was no longer the heir to the throne but rather just a girl who was friends with Wild. Though she was working hard to restore her kingdom, it had only been a few months since the calamity was defeated. It was nice to be seen as just another person and not the prophesied savior of the world. It was also the nickname her Link had come up with for her.

“Of course, Flora.” Time smiled. Besides Sun and Tetra, Flora was the Zelda with the least princess like attitude. She cared little for titles and was far more interested in the restoration of Hyrule and her research into its ancient past. “May I introduce you to my wife, Malon.”

Flora’s attention snapped to the woman next to Time. She had been curious as to who the woman was, as she knew all of the villagers in Hateno, but Time’s wife was the last person she suspected her to be. “You’re wife?” She asked in shock as the couple nodded to her. Flora quickly shook off her surprise as her royal etiquette kicked in. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She said with a shallow curtsy of her own.

“Same to you.” Malon replied with her usual sweet country drawl. Flora couldn’t help but smile at the warm tone of voice the other woman greeted her with. Yet her mind was still racing with questions.

“But how did you get here?” She asked, before turning to face Time. “The others told me you and Wild had gone to investigate a ranch?” Which was strange in and of itself, as the only ranch Flora was aware of was the old Lon Lon Ranch. It was once part of outer castle town in Hyrule Field, but it and the rest of the town, were destroyed in the Calamity.

Time and Malon shared a look before turning back to the princess. “It’s a bit of a long story, and we’re not sure of everything ourselves.” Time began to explain.

“But we can tell you what we do know back at the house.” Malon finished for her husband. “Wild and a few of the other boys are resting so we were going to surprise them with dinner. Would you like to join us?”

Flora quickly agreed as the three made their way back towards Wild’s home.

Wild awoke later than he planned. Sky was laying below him, his head pillowed on the chosen hero’s chest, Sky’s arms draped over his shoulders holding him close. Slowly Wild detangled himself from the sleeping hero, being extra careful when he found Hyrule was still sleeping as well. The traveler was using their legs a pillow.

Slowly Wild looked around the room only to find they were the only ones in the house. He pushed himself up and headed for the door. When he exited the house, he saw a large group surrounding his cooking pot. As he walked over, he caught the tail end of a conversation.

“Interesting. So, we have no idea what brought you here or how to return you to your own time.” Flora said from her spot near the cooking pot.

“That about sums it up.” Malon said as she stirred what smelled to be a delicious soup.

“Fascinating. I wonder if more people will be pulled from their timelines?” Flora pondered. Wild knew she was just thinking out loud as she often did.

“I hope not.” Legend replied, folding his arms in front of him with a grumpy pout. “last thing we need is to go searching for more people through time.”

“What you don’t want your friends to come visit?” Warriors teased, though it fell flat as the members of the groups thought about their loved ones in danger.

Legend leveled him with a glare. “I don’t want them coming here.” Wild tried to not take that personally. It wasn’t his Hyrule that was the problem but rather the threat of having their loved ones somewhere they shouldn’t be. “Besides Malon got dropped days away from us. If it wasn’t for the champions fancy map and teleporting, we never would have reached her. What happens if the next time we switch someone else is dropped in with us? What if next time we don’t have a fancy map? What if we never know they are there until its already to late? What then?”

Legend knew that the Captain was just teasing him the way they always did, but this was to serious to joke about. The truth of the matter was that they got luck with Malon. Ever since Wild and Time returned with her the Vet’s brain had been in overdrive.

How did she get her? What brought her here? Could they get her back to Time’s Hyrule or was she stuck here? And worst of all, were there others out there? Was this the shadows newest tacti?. Kidnap their loved ones and drop them into impossible scenarios?

Legend had already had to choose between saving the world and the person he loved. He wasn’t sure he would be strong enough to make that choice again. Losing Mar- losing HER was one of the hardest things that had ever happened to him. If he had to chose between the fate of Hyrule and one of his brothers, his sister Fable, or Ravio, he wasn’t sure he could do it. No, he wouldn’t do it this time. He’d rather die.

The group was silent after Legend’s rant. Their own brains rushing with worries for their own loved ones. That was part of a quest after all. You leave your loved ones somewhere safe, or you rescue them and bring them somewhere safe. They had never been faced with a loved one being dropped into danger out of no where. At least not in the middle of a quest.

“Well, let’s not fret over what hasn’t happened yet.” Malon said bring the group back to reality. “Wild I see you’re up just in time for dinner.” She smiled warmly at the boy, using his arrival as a way to further distract the group.

Wild waved awkwardly as he made his way over to sit between Flora and Twilight. Malon watched as her descendant instantly made room for his cub. Flora turned to ask after her knight’s wellbeing. It was good to see the young man being cared for.

“Wind.” She called gently. The youngest perked up at her call. “Would you mind going and waking the other two?” A wicked grin broke across the pirate’s face as he raced off towards the house. Time shook his head before turning to his wife.

“You might regret asking him that.” He chuckled as they watched the pirate scurry through the door.

“Why would-” Flora started to ask when Legend, Four, and Warriors all held up three fingers, then two, then one, then….

The sound of a large gust of wind could be heard from inside the house, followed by the sound of surprised shouting. Shortly after Wind came skipping out of the house. Hyrule and Sky followed, both heroes were trying to fix their hair which was sticking up in all directions.

“What did you even do Sailor?” Four asked from his spot next to Twilight. The Pirate happily pulled out his Wind Walker with a flourish.

“Just created a little breeze.” He said as he sat down next to Four. Four and Flora’s eyes locked on to the Wind Waker in his hands.

“Extraordinary.” Flora said as she resisted the urge to reach out and touch the item. “Such a small item can change the wind.”

“You’re showing us how that works later.” Four declared as his eyes danced over the new item.

“Later.” Time said watching the three with growing concern. “And away from the house.”

Malon shook her head at the her husband as Flora and Four started asking questions about the Wind Walker. She began passing out bowls of soup to the group, gently pushing Wild back to his seat when he tried to help. “I’ve got it tonight dear.”

The meal remained pleasant as the group descended into comfortable conversation. Though Twilight spent most of the meal trying to convince Flora, Four, Wind, and Wild that testing how far they could send Wild on his paraglider with the Wind Walker was not a safe activity. It was chaotic, but it was good.

After dinner Flora had excused herself. She often split her time in Hateno between Wild’s home and Purah’s Lab. With all the extra people taking refuge in Wild’s home she decided it was best to return to the lab.

The chain had made their way back inside the house. They had changed into more comfortable clothes and had placed their gear to the side. Most of the boys had found their way to the cots in the weapons nook, various conversations bouncing around the group. Malon was seated at the table with Time standing beside her. Warriors sat across from them, Twilight leaned against the table, the four of them having their own conversation while the younger members of the chain were causing chaos in the nook.

That is until Wind raised his voice over the others. “Hey Wild, you said you’d tell us about these weapons.” The sailor called pointing at the weapons on the wall. The room fell silent as everyone’s attention shifted to the champion.

Wild’s face was solemn as he looked at the weapons on his walls.

“You don’t have to share.” Sky spoke up from his seat near Wild. “If your not ready, you don’t have to share.”

Wild gave him a weak smile before pushing to his feet and walking towards the weapons. He stopped in front of the middle stand and rested his hand against the Lightscale Trident. He paused for a second taking a steadying breath, before he wrapped his hand around the Trident and gently took it down from its stand.

He turned back to face the rest of the group, making his way to sit next to Four, allowing the weapons master to inspect the Trident. Four hesitated his hand hovering over the trident. Wild gave him a gentle nod letting him know it was okay, that he trusted him. Gently Four rested his hands on the Trident as started his inspection.

“It’s beautiful.” Four commented. “And perfectly balanced.”

“This is the Lightscale Trident.” His voice was soft, and the group leaned in to hear him. “It was the weapon wielded by Princess Mipha of the Zora Domain.” Wild paused to take in a breath and stabilize himself. “From what I’ve been told we were childhood friends. I don’t have many memories from my childhood, but I know she was dear to me.” His hand raised to rest over his heart.

“It’s strange everyone in the Zora domain has such fond memories of her. They tell me about how close we were, and I’ve read her diary. And yet I have very few memories of our time together. Outside of a handful of memories I don’t know her at all. Yet there’s this solemn ache in my chest when I think of her. All the champions really.”

The group sat in still silence absorbing his words. Now that he had started no one was willing to stop him.

“I remember the day she agreed to become the Zora Champion and pilot Vah Ruta. We went up to Vah Ruta afterwards. She needed to train as its Pilot and form a bond with the Divine Beast. While we were up there, she healed one of my wounds and we talked. She told me that after the Calamity was over, she wanted to spend more time together.”

He paused for a long moment after that, lost in his own thoughts.

“She sounds kind.” Malon spoke, breaking the heavy atmosphere.

Wild raised his head to meet her gaze. “She was.” He looked down for another moment before holding his hands out to Four. The blacksmith quickly returned the trident to him. Wild moved to place the Lightscale Trident back in its home.

“When the Calamity came Ganon sent manifestations of himself to each of the Divine Beast to kill the Champions.” The room became deadly silent again as he spoke. Wild had never told them how the Champions had died. He stood now with his back to his brothers, looking at the weapons of the Champions.

“When I defeated the blights and freed the Divine Beast, I also freed the spirits of the Champions. They were able to take over the Divine Beasts again and helped me defeat Ganon. After freeing the Beasts, their people were so grateful that they gave me the Champions’ weapons as a thank you.” His hand gently rested against the trident once more. “But I was too scared to use them. I couldn’t handle breaking my friend’s weapons. Even if I barely remember them.”

“Cub.” Twilight whispered as he moved from his seat to approach his protégée.

Wild turned to face them. There were tears gathering in his eyes but they hadn’t fallen yet. He turned to face Four, causing the blacksmith to sit up straighter.

“Since we’re here I’d like to ask you a favor Four.” The blacksmith nodded his head telling Wild to continue. “I want to return these weapons to the Champions’ families. Mipha has a little brother, Daruk and Urbosa have descendents, and while Revali has no living family I know a Rito who has his spirit.”

Daruk, Urbosa, and Revali. The names of the other champions. The chains eyes drifted to the weapons behind Wild, wondering who’s weapon was who’s. Who were these Champions, and what did they mean to Wild?

“But I want to make sure they are as durable as possible.” Wild didn’t want to think how crushed Sidon would be if he broke his sister’s trident or Riju’s feelings of failure if she shattered Lady Urbosa’s scimitar or shield. Yunobo wouldn’t recover from breaking Daruk’s Bolder Breaker, and while he was able to fix it he knew Teba’s pride would be permanently stained from breaking his hero’s bow. “Can you help me restore them?”

Four’s eyes widened at the question. These weapons obviously meant a lot to Wild. They were one of the only things he had left of his dead friends. He was putting a lot of faith and trust into Four and his abilities as a blacksmith.

“It would be my honor.” Four made up his mind right then and there that these would be his finest works. Wild trusted him with this and he wouldn’t let him down.

“I’ll help to.” Hyrule proclaimed. He helped Four craft Wild’s sword both times.

“So will I.” Warriors swore from his position.

“We’ll all help!” Wind said bouncing up from his seat. The rest of the group nodded their agreement.

Wild looked over the group with so much gratitude and love. ‘Thank you.’ He signed as his voice finally failed him. Twilight moved forward to pull the young man into a tight hug, the others quick to join in.

“Alright.” Time called as he helped Malon from her chair. “We’ve all had a long day. Some of us had longer than others.” He said as he thought over the stress of rescuing Malon this morning, his hand tightening around hers. Malon gently rubbed her thumb over his knuckles causing him to loosen his grip. “We should all head to bed.”

He paused ready to ask Wild if he was sure he didn’t want to sleep in his bed, only of Twilight to tip his weight to the side, bring himself crashing down onto the cots. Wild, who was still wrapped in his arms from their earlier hug, had no choice but to be pulled down on top of his brother. “N’ite.” Twilight called from his position while holding on to a disgruntled Wild.

Malon smiled and giggled at the boys as the rest of the chain moved to find a place around the ranch hand and his cub. “Goodnight boy. Love you.” She called as she lead Time up the stairs by their joined hands.

All the boys froze for a second, before scrambling over themselves to yell various versions of, “love you to.” Back up to Malon.

They all bedded down for a peaceful night.

It was around two in the morning when Wild’s slate let out another shrill beeping sound. The boys instantly waking up at the sharp noise. All their hearts jumping to their throats.

The Sheikah Slate had only made that noise once before. They all knew what it most likely meant.

Someone else had arrived in Wild’s Hyrule.

Notes:

I really want to plant the seeds of TOTK here. Its why I mentioned Zelda's golden horse in the last chapter. I love that the Sages have the Champions weapons and wanted to make Wild returning the Weapons a moment or at least a plot point in the story.

Next time a new loved one joins the group.

Chapter 4: Legend's Rude awakening

Notes:

Sorry I've been gone forever. Work has been kicking my butt. But here we go again!!!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

A shrill sound awoke Legend from his sleep. He sat up and immediately reached for the sword on his back only to grasp air. For a second, he panicked, his breathing stilling in his chest. Then he remembered where they were.

They were in Wild’s house. They were safe. All their gear was stored by Wild’s stairs. They didn’t need it while they slept because they weren’t in danger.

No, that sound meant someone else was in danger.

As Legend worked to get his breathing under control his eyes swept around the room. Everyone was up. Hyrule was next to him in a similar state, calming down from being scared awake. Warriors was near them with Wind. While the older had already snapped into captain mode, ready to come up with a plan, the younger was rubbing his eyes still getting his barring on the world. Four was awake, but had the dazed looking his eyes that he got from time to time. Even Sky, who could normally sleep through a thunderstorm, was up and alert.

Legend’s eyes drifted up at a flash of red hair. Malon and Time were at the railing of the loft looking down at the boys. Their faces set with worry for whatever would come next.

All eyes were locked on Twilight and Wild. The older sat close to his cub. He was obviously trying to peak at the screen but by his facial expression Legend assumed he hadn’t seen anything yet. Wild on the other hand, sat curled around his Slate as he looked at the screen.

The noise had stopped, but it had stopped quickly before. It was just an alert. The last time it had sounded was to tell them that Malon had arrived.

With it sounding again the group could only sit in tense silence wondering, who was it this time?

Legend’s eyes swept the room again. Warriors, Wind, Twilight, and Sky all had plenty of loved ones. Warriors had friends from the war, competent warriors who could survive on their own for a bit if needed. Sky’s friends were mostly trained but untested knights. Wind was friends with pirates, unless it was his sister or grandmother, they should be fine for a bit. Twilight though was friends with ‘rebels’ and ranchers. It was a 50/50 chance that his loved ones would be able to protect themselves or not.

His eyes drifted to Four and his successor. As far as he knew Fours only friend was his Zelda, Dot. Hyrule, outside of his own Zeldas, Dawn and Aurora, didn’t have anyone. At least rescuing a princess was nothing new for them.

His eyes drifted up to Time and Malon. Would the goddess be cruel enough to drop another one of Time’s loved one into this world? Maybe. The shadow they were chasing definitely was, and they weren’t yet sure who brought Malon here.

All speculation stopped when Wild’s head snapped up. It had only been a few seconds, but the wait felt agonizing for the chain. Wild’s eyes locked on Legend, his face pale.

Legend sucked in a sharp breath and tried to control his panic. He was the vet. He had more experience than anyone. Whatever this was he could handle it. Never mind the fact that he had already lost so many people. Never mind he couldn’t handle the loss of another.

“Legend-” that was all Wild was able to get out before Legend was moving. He had to know what was happening. Not knowing was far worse. If he knew what was happening, he could start making a plan to deal with it. He could handle this.

He got to Wild’s side and looked at the screen. The map was open to an island, because of course it was. For a moment that was all he could focus on. Until he saw the flashing purple bunny symbol on the screen.

He couldn’t handle this.

Ravio was here.

Ravio his best friend. Ravio his roommate. Ravio the person he- no he couldn’t. He loved HER and look how that turned out. He couldn’t… he wasn’t…

But that didn’t matter right now. What mattered was that Ravio, self-proclaimed coward, was stuck on an island miles away from any shoreline. He was stranded on an island. An island in Wild’s Hyrule, a Hyrule Ravio wasn’t supposed to be in. He was a merchant! Not a fighter. What if there were guardians there? Or lynels?

Suddenly a hand was waving in front of his face, cutting off his view of Wild’s Slate.

“Le-nd. ege-d. Legend!” His hearing swirled back in as he realized Twilight was calling for him.

Legend jerked his head up away from the map to look at the room. Twilight had moved to sit beside him, placing a grounding hand on his shoulder. One Legend now realized he needed, as his breathing was on the verge of hyperventilation.

Wild sat on his other side the Slate between them. His hand being the one that had cut off Legends view of the map.

Across from them he could see the rest of the chain looking at them in worry. Hyrule looked ready to launch himself over to his predecessor, only Sky’s hand on his shoulder stilling him. Sky and Warriors were sending him twin looks of worry and understanding, Legend looked away from them as quickly as possible. Wind’s face just held worry and fear. Their youngest leaning on Warriors trying to figure out what to do.

Four was looking at him like he was a particularly difficult puzzle to solve. Legend tried not to take it personally, it was how Four looked at most things. But he couldn’t look at Four very long.

Time and Malon were making their way down the stairs. His panic spring them into action as they approached where the boys were with worried filled faces.

Legend couldn’t deal with this. The worry and the fretting.

Ravio needed rescuing.

With that thought Legend pushed himself up. His breathing was still too fast as black dots filled his vision, but he ignored that and turned to look down at Wild. “How fast can we get to that island?”

‘Theres a shrine on the island that we can teleport to.’ Wild quickly signed before turning the screen to face Legend once again. ‘We can leave as soon as you’re ready.’

“Good.” Legend said as he made his way towards the stairs where their gear was. “Then let’s not waste any time.”

Time watched as Legend grabbed his red over tunic and pulled it over his head, before turning his gaze back to Wild. The boy had pushed himself to his feet and with a few swipes on his screen his outfit changed to his traveling clothes. The champion’s tunic was still drying after Legend washed it earlier that day, so the Champion had changed into a red tunic with leather armor. His familiar cloak hanging from his shoulders.

“What island?” Time asked the question that was on everyone’s mind.

“Don’t you dare old man.” Legend whorled around to point his finger at Time. “Don’t you dare try to tell me to slow down and think about this. Not after you threw caution to the wind just because there was ‘something’ happening at Lon Lon.” Legend continued his rant as he settled his sword and sheath onto his back. “We didn’t even know Malon was there and you ran off. Ravio is here and I’m not waiting.”

“Legend!” Sky called trying to calm their aggravated brother.

Time held up his hands in a calming gesture. “I was only asking so that we knew where you were heading. If you take longer then a few hours to return, I would like to know where to look for you.” Time kept his composure as calm as he could. He knew the fear that was currently running through Legend’s veins, as he had experienced it only hours before.

He watched as some of the fight left the younger hero as the Vet’s shoulders dropped at the news. “Oh.”

“Evertide” Wild’s rough voice called their attention back to him. Twilight stood close to his cub fussing over the boy. They all knew Wild was still exhausted from teleporting Time and Malon earlier in the day, but the Champion was standing tall.

Once he was sure he had everyone’s attention he switched to signing. ‘It’s an island to the south of Hyrule. If you head down to the beach and secure a raft you can sail to it in about a half a day’s time, depending on the wind.’

Wind perked up at the mention of sailing. “Oh, the wind won’t be a problem.”

“Alright,” Warriors called their attention as he stood up as well. “Wild and Legend will teleport over to this island. If they’re not back in,” he paused looking to Wild, trusting the Champion to offer them a reasonable time estimate.

Wild took a second to think before he signed, ‘Four hours.’

Warriors nodded before continuing his statement. “Four hours, or we don’t hear from them in that time, then we can start making our way to the island.” His voice carried a finality to it. His time as an army Captain bleeding in when the group needed to make quick plans.

With a quick round of nods the group agreed with the plan.

Legend turned back to gathering his items when a hand rested on his shoulder. Turning around he found himself face to face with his successor. Hyrule met his eyes, his own gaze filled with worry. “Here.” The Traveler said as he held out a bottle of red potion to Legend. “Just in case.”

Legend knew what that meant. Just in case they were too late and Ravio was already hurt. Just in case something goes wrong, and they need it. Just in case because I can’t be there to heal you.

Legend accepted the potion, quickly storing it in his bag before pulling the Traveler into a quick but tight hug. “We’re coming back. I promise.” As he felt Hyrule hug him back he wasn’t sure who the statement was meant to comfort. Hyrule the healer and brother he was leaving behind, or himself, for he knew if he lost one more person he would never recover.

As the two separated Legend turned to see Wild nearby. The boy was being fretted over by both Twilight and Malon as Time watched on in what Legend could only call contentment. Legend walked over to tell Wild he was ready, but once he was close enough Malon pulled him into a tight hug.

“You take care of yourself you hear.” Malon held him tightly as though he was precious to her. In that moment Legend wanted nothing more than to sink into her embrace, but he couldn’t. Ravio needed him. Reluctantly he pulled himself away and stepped towards Wild. The Champion giving him a broad smile.

“Don’t worry about me, I always pull through.” Legend reassured Malon.

“Oh, I know that. But it doesn’t stop me from worrying about you. Take care of each other.” She smiled warmly at the two boys. Time wrapping his arm around her waist and holding her close. He knew her and knew that all she wanted to do was keep the boys safe at home. But they had to go. There was no force in all of Hyrule that would have stopped Time from getting to Malon, and he knew the same was true for Legend and Ravio.

“We will.” Legend promised, as he rested his hand on Wild’s shoulder.

The younger boy pressed a button on his Slate before turning to face Legend. He held up his hand and crossed his pointed and middle finger before shaking them at Legend. ‘Ready?’

Legend nodded and with one more look at the chain Wild selected the option to teleport. The world around them lit up in blue swirls as the two departed.

Notes:

Off we go to Evertide Island to rescue Ravio.
Originally I was going to have the whole Island adventure in this chapter as well but I really wanted to get something out to y'all after so long. Sorry works been kicking my butt. I have Ravio's rescue about half way written and will hopefully have it out soon.
