Work Text:
hate may have been a strong word but it was truly the only word yoongi could think of to describe his job. dealing with drunken college kids every night wasn’t exactly how he expected his life would turn out; being the one who sells the alcohol to the drunken college kids made things even worse.
“why do they buy drinks if they’re just gonna leave it on the bar to go dance?” yoongi grumbled angrily to namjoon as he mopped up another spilled drink that had been abandoned. namjoon shrugged.
“more money for the club though, right?” damn namjoon. sometimes yoongi hated his friend and his rational thinking.
“fuck you, let me complain for once.” yoongi sighed heavily, throwing the soaking wet cloth under the bar. “all you ever have to do is break up fights and stop underage kids getting to the bar. why aren’t you helping me clean this up?”
“because it’s not my job,” namjoon retorted cheekily. “do you know how hard it is to break up bar fights? these people are complete savages.”
“yeah, i’m sure they are.” yoongi rolled his eyes before his attention was pulled to a group of boys stopping by the bar. he moved to stand in front of them, trying to wipe as much of the pissed off expression off his face as he could. “what can i get you guys?”
three of the four listed off different types of spirits, handing over the appropriate money. yoongi made their drinks with practiced ease, sliding them over the countertop to their respective owner before he he turned to the fourth boy.
“uhm, just a coke for me, please.” the boy looked slightly out of place, his styled hair messed up from nervous fingers running through it over and over. the striped sweater he had on was covered with holes but he had the sleeves pulled over his hands, fiddling with the loose threads. with the way he was dressed he would have fit right in, if he didn’t look so shy about everything.
“just a coke?” yoongi asked as he accepted the cute boy’s money. “not following in your friends’ footsteps?”
the boy laughed softly behind his hand. “no, no, that kinda stuff isn’t for me. i don’t like the taste or the effect of it.”
“that’s fair.” yoongi pushed the drink over to the boy with a smile. usually he avoided conversation with customers but he had a feeling this boy was going to end up sitting at the bar alone for most of the night. he would feel bad if he didn’t see this happen to someone nearly every night.
one of the cute boy’s friends stayed with him by the bar for a while. yoongi could hear the boy’s sweet laughter over the noise even as he served other customers and, every now and again, he would catch a glimpse of the way his eyes curved up when he smiled. he really was one of the cutest people yoongi had ever seen.
naturally, the cute boy’s friend disappeared into the crowd after a while, blending into the mass of bodies on the dancefloor. there was a popular edm song pounding throughout the club, everyone either jumping to the beat or grinding on a partner. it wasn’t a new sight to yoongi at all.
on the other hand, cute boy looked to be in awe. it was clearly his first time in a club and yoongi snorted under his breath at the innocence. he may have looked mature but the way he was acting clearly showed how young he really was.
“so, i take it you aren’t one for dancing either?” yoongi teased the boy once he had a free moment. the boy was nursing his coke in both hands, taking tentative sips.
“dancing, i like.” the boy chuckled. “just not… this kind.”
“ah, so you aren’t one for having sweaty people pressed up against you then?” yoongi laughed at the boy’s shrug.
“i would prefer to avoid it where necessary.” he paused for a moment, hesitating. “uh. i’m jungkook. by the way. yeah.”
yoongi would have cooed over how adorable the introduction was if he were a man without any dignity. which he wasn’t, for the record. “yoongi.”
jungkook smiled toothily, taking another drink of his coke when yoongi bustled off to tend to other customers. truthfully, yoongi would have loved to sit and chat with jungkook a little longer but, in order to keep his job, he had to work. capitalism really kills.
it turned out that jungkook was indeed good company to have around. whenever yoongi wasn’t serving or mixing drinks, he was standing with jungkook, happy to listen to the boy talk about whatever. he discovered that he had been right - it was jungkook’s first time in a club.
“it’s my jimin hyung’s 23rd birthday,” jungkook had explained. “he wanted to go to a club and honestly, i just didn’t want to be left out. plus, i’d feel bad if i bailed on his birthday celebration, you know?”
yoongi wanted to laugh because, god, this kid was cute. his mouth was a little lopsided whenever he talked and he had an overbite that showed through whenever he smiled. there was sweat dotting his forehead from the heat of the club and he had gotten slightly more talkative as the night had gone on.
“sounds like he’s lucky to have you as a friend,” yoongi commented casually. jungkook flushed at the compliment and giggled quietly.
“yeah, he totally is.” jungkook smiled brightly at yoongi and yoongi couldn’t stop himself from smiling back. jungkook’s happiness was just a little contagious.
when yoongi went to serve some people, he could see jungkook place his drink down and pull his phone from his pocket. his slender fingers tapped around the screen quickly and yoongi had to pay extra attention to the customer to ensure he didn’t get distracted.
maybe it was a good thing he had been so drawn to jungkook, otherwise he wouldn’t have seen the man on the barstool next to jungkook’s slip something into the boy’s drink. he was certain he had never moved so fast when jungkook went to raise the glass absentmindedly to his lips, ignoring the customers in front of him.
“do not drink that!” he yelled at jungkook, snapping his fingers to get namjoon’s attention. namjoon was standing upright instantly, following yoongi’s pointed finger to the man next to jungkook. the man looked like a deer caught in headlights before he was on his feet a split second later, disappearing into the crowd with namjoon hot on his heels.
jungkook’s eyes were wide with confusion, the glass frozen halfway to his mouth. he blinked at yoongi questioningly and yoongi let out a sigh of relief when he began to lower the glass.
“i saw him slip something into your drink,” yoongi told jungkook quickly, watching the boy’s eyes widen even more. “don’t drink it, i’ll get you another.”
“oh.” jungkook put the glass down cautiously, fear tinging his features. “oh, god.”
“hey, it’s alright, you’re fine.” yoongi poured got jungkook another glass, swiping the tainted one from the counter. “it’s just a good thing i saw him do it.”
“yeah.” jungkook nodded vigorously. “thank you so much, holy shit.”
yoongi huffed out a tiny laugh. “don’t worry about it. i don’t particularly want anything to happen to you.”
jungkook’s cheeks were pink and he ducked his head. a small smile was on his face as he thanked yoongi again. yoongi opened his mouth to speak again but was interrupted by jungkook’s friend leaping onto his back and yelling in his ear.
“kookie, we’re going back to jimin’s now! you coming?” the orange haired boy had his arm wrapped around jungkook’s shoulder, their cheeks smushed together.
jungkook locked eyes with yoongi for a brief moment and yoongi could see the conflict brewing inside the boy. he nodded to jungkook in a way that he hoped came across as encouraging. hoseok sometimes told him that he rarely came across how he wanted to.
“i… i think i’ll stay here for a little longer, tae.” jungkook gently bumped his head against his friend’s. “i’ll come over tomorrow though.”
jungkook’s friend seemed a little surprised at jungkook’s choice but decided not to question it. “alright, kookie. text us when you get home, okay? be safe!”
he dashed off towards the exit after ruffling jungkook’s hair affectionately, jungkook muttering under his breath as he tried to fix his already messy hair. yoongi smirked in amusement before leaning across the counter towards jungkook.
“listen, i get off work in an hour,” he started, jungkook’s eyes snapping to his. “how would you like to hang around ‘till then? we can go somewhere quiet and get coffee.”
“coffee at 1am?” jungkook grinned. “i’m not sure there are many places open then.”
yoongi scoffed with an eyeroll. “shut it, brat. we can go back to my apartment and i’ll make you coffee there?”
“yeah.” jungkook tilted his head cutely with that adorable smile. “that definitely sounds good.”
