Recreation of oneself

Summary:

It was exhilarating to witness something brand new, something he had created that would keep recreating itself as long as it was allowed.

Work Text:

1. The stars

New stars were glittering in the vastness of open space, spreading their warm, newly discovered light. Crowley was proud of the work he’d done whether anyone else appreciated it or not. It was exhilarating to witness something brand new, something he had created that would keep recreating itself as long as it was allowed.

Look at you, you’re gorgeous.

Only one other angel had fully appreciated the sight with him. It had been nice to share the moment with someone.

2. The darkness

Crowley didn’t mean to fall. He had only been curious and asked some questions. He spent time in the wrong company.

The most devastating part of it all was the loss of light. Crowley’s new eyes could no longer see stars the way he had created them, and the brightness of Heaven was now too sharp and cold for him. Whatever light there was in Hell lacked the beauty and the shimmer.

Down here Crowley wouldn’t be creating anything; he was only supposed to take and destroy.

It was lonely.

3. The green

Get up there and make some trouble.

The world was a mix of everything Crowley loved about light and darkness, and the humans… the humans had so many choices. It had been easy to do what he did best, ask a few questions, make them wonder.

Too easy. It made Crowley wonder too.

He recognised the angel on the wall immediately, but only fully paid attention after Aziraphale confessed what he had done with his sword. The angel also breaking the rules because it was the right thing to do made Crowley feel less alone.

4. The first end

To the world.

Maybe after all that they were going to be on their own side. On humanity’s side.

5. The second end

“I’m sorry.”

It didn’t matter who said the words first and who pulled the other into a hug. It didn’t matter whose side they were on. They were together now.

+1 The garden

Crowley was lying on his back on a blanket on a field and looked at the night sky. Bright lights shimmering in the vast darkness. Britain was too far north to see Alpha Centauri, but seeing the other stars and remembering the birth of some of them made Crowley feel half-joy, half-sadness.

The sense of his angel approaching made Crowley feel warm. He couldn’t sense love like angels could, but he could always sense Aziraphale.

“Blanket, my dear? The night is getting chilly.”

Instead of leaving the blanket and going back inside, Aziraphale settled down to lie next to Crowley and spread the blanket on top of them both.

“Look, a shooting star,” the angel said, smiling widely at the quick flash of light. Crowley couldn’t take his eyes off Aziraphale for a moment.

Look at you, you’re gorgeous.

“It’s very pretty,” Crowley said when he turned his gaze back into the sky.

Under the blanket he took the angel’s hand and squeezed.

Aziraphale squeezed back.
