Gargoyles and Yokai

Summary:

One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled.
It was a time of darkness, it was a world of fear.
It was the age of Gargoyles and Yokai!
Stone and images by day, warriors by night.
We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect.
Frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years.
Now here in Manhattan…
The spell has broken…
And we live again!
We are defenders of the night!
We are Gargoyles and Yokai!

Prologue.

~}I{~

Scotland, 994 AD

A castle made of stone was under attack by a horde of Vikings. The Army that dwelled within this castle was already manning their battle stations, fighting off the invading force. The sky above was slowly changing from bright blue to an orangey-red colour as the sun was setting over the horizon.

The Capt. of the Guard parried a sword with his own and then struck back at his opponent. The sky overhead was slowly turning from orangey red to a bluish-purple. The Capt. of the Guards quickly shouted at his men, "Hold them back as long as you can! Reinforcements will be awakening soon!"

One of the oldest men of the Army, who stood at 180.4 cm with long ash blonde hair that reached his back and was currently tied back in a high ponytail except for a pair of strands that hung freely in front of his ears and slightly spiky at the top, light green eyes, and was currently wearing the armour the other soldiers wore quickly glanced at the setting sun when he punched a Viking warrior in the face. "The night is falling, brethren shall awaken soon!" This blonde warrior shouted to the rest of the Army in a relatively thick accent from far across the sea.

A young man of average height and build has black hair that he keeps in a rather spiky ponytail, dark eyes, and a scar that runs across the bridge of his nose managed to shove one Viking down a flight of stairs, thus knocking down any other Vikings that were unfortunate enough to be on that staircase. The sun started vanishing over the horizon and taking its light with it.

The leader of the Vikings, Hokon, somehow managed to reach the top of the highest tower. He smirked as he raised his sword, ready to shatter the stone statue before him as a way to show his victory.

The sun had disappeared completely over the horizon, turning the sky black.

The statue's stony exterior started cracking as soon as the sun vanished from the sky. Hokon stared at the statue as the crack started multiplying. The stones started falling off the statues and revealing a living, breathing gargoyle underneath. This particular gargoyle had a muscular build, lavender skin, and long dark brown hair, brown eyes, also wearing a dark brown loincloth that is held up by a black belt. When idle, he keeps his wings folded cape-like, but will open them if angered or in flight. He has two horn-like structures on his forehead. This was the leader of the gargoyle clan that lived in the castle. He was named Goliath by the humans of Castle Wyvern.

Goliath quickly notices the Viking leader before he picks him up by one arm. The gargoyle stood up, dangling Hokon over the ledge, and said in a deep voice, "You are trespassing."

Undaunted, Hokon swung his sword at Goliath, who caught it easily enough in his free hand. A small, slow trickle of blood oozed from Goliath's palm.

The other gargoyles started awakening from their days sleep, the stone skin breaking off their bodies as they awoke. However, the gargoyles weren't the only ones that were waking up from their slumber.

Creatures different from gargoyles started appearing on the walls of the castle before they started literally walking right out of those images. Two giant fox-like creatures, two humans with black feathered wings sprouting out of their backs, two butterfly-like creatures, two shadow-like creatures, two angel-like creatures, a topless man that seemed to be surrounded by mist, a girl who was holding what appeared to be crystals, a cloaked figure, a deathly pale man wearing just a pair of slacks, and a girl with long blonde hair and six floating hands that surrounded her walked out of the walls.

The Viking warriors were utterly shocked at the sudden appearance of the gargoyles and the other strange creatures that called this castle their home.

Goliath tossed Hokon towards a gathering of Vikings before quickly landing next to the tallest fox-like creature, and saying, "Minato, let us show these trespassers the reason why they should leave."

The taller fox-like creature had blond spiky hair, bright blue eyes, blond fox ears on top of his head, stood at 179.2 cm, had paws instead of feet, he wore a green shirt and black slacks that have been modified to allow his nine orange tails to move freely and wore a long white short-sleeved cloak that was open the front and held together by a thin orange rope. The fox man gave the gargoyle leader a smirk before saying in a thick accent from across the seas, "We not oppose to removing the trespassers from our home. Especially attacking trespassers that try harming brethren."

With that, the strange creatures aided the gargoyles and the human allies force out the Vikings.

On top of one tower, three gargoyles were watching the fight. The first gargoyle was red with long white hair and a beak for a mouth. The second gargoyle was small, green, and bald and his wings were attached to his arms in a web-like structure. The third gargoyle was large, rounded, and had bluish-green skin.

The red gargoyle turned to his brother when he said, "What are we waiting for, let's not let our brothers and sisters have all the fun!" The red one then jumps off the tower and glides down to join the others in defeating the Vikings.

"Not afraid are you?" The green gargoyle asked the blue.

"Afraid? Me? Why, all of nature trembles at my passing," the blue gargoyle said before he pushed up his stomach to make it look like he was more muscular than he was, but that didn't last long.

"I can see why," the green gargoyle joked as he poked the other stomach.

The sound of beating wings was heard over the green, blue, and red gargoyles. The three turned to the noise to see the older of the two raven-like creatures. This one was roughly 178 cm tall, had a fair complexion, onyx eyes, under which were long, pronounced tear-troughs, had jet-black hair that was pulled back in a low ponytail and his face was framed with centre-parted bangs that extended to his chin, he had raven talons rather than feet, and his entire wing span was easy twice his own height. Those wings were slowly beating the air around them to keep this raven hovering. This creature folded his arms as he looked at the two gargoyles and said, "You can either help our allies or continue to act like hatchlings. Personally, I would choose the first rather than the second." With that, the Raven humanoid flapped his wings and dove towards the battle.

The green, blue, and red gargoyles gave each other a glance before they glided into the fray.

One of the eldest gargoyles was fighting off a trio of Vikings but failed to notice one Viking sneaking up behind him with the club until Goliath picked up that Viking and tossed aside.

"Watch your back, old friend," Goliath advises the elder gargoyle.

"I'd suggest you watch your own," the elder gargoyle stated as he used his sword to perry an oncoming Viking.

Minato landed nearby and used one of his tails to slam a Viking that was trying to sneak up on the duo, off to the side when he said, "Perhaps I be watching both you's backs for you." The elder and Goliath gave each other a knowing look before smiling at their ally and fighting off more Vikings.

Meanwhile, the younger fox-like creature was fighting alongside the younger raven-like creature. The younger fox looked almost identical to the older except he had three tails rather than nine, had whisker-like markings on his cheeks and stood only 166 cm tall. The younger raven looked pretty similar to the older raven, except he had black eyes, mildly short spiky black hair with a blue tint with bangs that hung over his face, which didn't have the same facial lines, and stood 168 cm tall.

The younger fox was using his three tails to take out two Vikings but didn't see a third sneaking up behind him. The younger raven easily took care of that attacker, as well as four other Vikings easily enough. The younger fox growled in annoyance when he said, "Hey! Sasuke! I was going to take them out!"

The young raven-like teen, Sasuke, gave the young fox a huff before saying, "If you had really planned on that, then they would've already been defeated. Cht, your only redeeming quality is that you're the 4th Hokage's son, Naruto." With that, the black-winged teen flew off to aid the other warriors.

The younger fox, Naruto, growled as he watched the raven-hybrid fly off. One of the younger fox's orange tails slammed a Viking to the side.

The other creatures aided the gargoyles and humans in the fight against the Vikings.

Ice formed on the metal weapons the Vikings used, making them brittle. The ice user conjured up an ice sword and stafferied their weapons with nearly no effort.

A shroud of mist engulfed a few vikings before they started floating in the air and then tossed over the castle wall by the mist.

The shadow creatures used the vikings’ own shadows to attack them while two humanoid butterflies flew overhead-as they used slingshots to shoot rocks at the vikings.

The pale man wearing only slacks was fighting off the Vikings with what looked like sharpened bone, more bones poked out of this man's skin, making a makeshift armour.

The angel-like Yokais also flew above to aid the Gargoyles and human allies.

The cloaked figure didn't seem to be doing anything but every time any vikings got near it they seemed to back away as if something invisible was attacking them.

One Viking tried to strike the older blond warrior with a mace, but something caught his wrist. When the viking turned to see who it was, he only saw a disembodied hand holding his wrist. A teenage girl with long blond hair that was tied back in a high ponytail, light blue eyes, a simple gray dress, and was holding a mace with her hands. But what this viking noticed right away was the blue eye in the centre of her forehead. The girl used this opportunity to hit the Viking right in the head with the mace, knocking him out cold.

The disembodied hand released the limp viking and joined five other disembodied hands that hovered behind the girl.

The Vikings were about to retreat when Hakan ordered them to stay and fight. They were taking this place over.

"Shame," Minato said, shaking his head as the Gargoyles, creatures, and allies gathered behind the older fox as they pushed more Vikings towards the main gate. The older fox glanced over towards the cloaked figure and asked, “Shino, would you like to convince Head Viking to leave with his allies?”

The hood of the cloaked figure moved up and down.

Hokon gave a laugh when he sneered, “What's that thing going to do to me? Wrap me in that cape of his?"

The cloaked figure, Shino, held out an arm, letting the cloth lift a bit. A winged insect flew out from under the cloak. Followed by another, and another, then a dozen more, and a few dozen more. Soon an entire swarm of buzzing insects hovered over the cloaked figure.

Hokon's eyes widened and his mouth dropped open. The cloud of swarming insects loomed overhead before striking at the vikings. The tiny insects bit the vikings wherever their armour couldn't cover. The vikings did try to strike at the insects, but they were too small and too fast to hit.

This was enough to drive the vikings away. They screamed in fear and pain as they ran from the castle and the creatures within.

Now Castle Wyvern was safe once more.

}I{

While the majority of the humans of Castle Wyvern celebrated their victory, the Yokais were doing something else entirely.

Minato watched alongside three of the older Yokai, an older raven-haired human-like man with a few scars on his face, a large-bodied brunette with swirls on his cheeks and the butterfly wings, and the warrior with the long blond hair that was tied back into a ponytail. Shino stood among these four as they watched the trials before them, along with most of the Gargoyle Clan and the other Yokais.

The pale-skinned Yokai that had the bones growing out of his skin, a man wearing gray clothing slacks with bandages wrapping around the lower half of his face, and the man with half his face hidden and a silver haired man and only had his left eye visible were a makeshift ring.

The mock battle started and the three in the circle launched at each other.

The pale-skinned Yokai pulled a bone out of his arm and used it as a makeshift sword as he charged at the silver-haired man. But the older side-stepped out the oncoming attack and manoeuvred the pale-skinned Yokai to collide with the bandage-wearing man.

The bandaged man turned into mist upon contact. "Watch it, Kiminaro!” The mist snapped in annoyance.

The pale-skinned Yokai stood up as he said, "Apologies, Zabuza, I was not aiming for you.”

The mist, Zabuza, let out a growl before turning his attention on the silver-haired Yokai.

The silver-haired Yokai, who quickly moved to avoid the oncoming attack, easily avoided the other Yokais.

The "Battle" continued for another minute or so before the silver-haired Yokai managed to throw the bone-growing Yokai out of the make-shift circle. The paler Yokai clicked his tongue before conceding to just sitting and watching the remaining two Yokais battle.

The mist Yokai and the silver-haired Yokai fought for a few more minutes before the mist Yokai managed to enveloped the other in its gaseous grasp.

The silver-haired Yokai smirked under his mask when he said, "I was waiting for you to do that, Zabuza."

"Oh?" the mist Yokai got out in an amused tone.

Static started emitting from the silver-haired Yokai's body.

Before the mist Yokai, Zabuza, could even react, there was a surge of electricity that caused the mist Yokai to both scream in shock and forced him away from the silver-haired Yokai.

The mist Yokai reformed into his human form outside the make-shift ring with a groan that sounded like it was mixed with annoyance and pain.

"Zabuza!" The young Yokai that used ice as a weapon during the Viking attack rushed over to the mist Yokai's side and looked him over for any serious damage. Zabuza clicked his tongue in annoyance as he moved to a more comfortable sitting position.

The older Shadow Yokai, Shikaku, raised his right hand in the air when he announced, "One contender remains!"

The older blonde warrior, Inoichi, then announced, "Thus the challenge has concluded!"

The older butterfly Yokai, Choza, then announced, "The title of second has been earned!"

The cloaked Yokai and the youngest of the overseers, Shino, finally announced, "Please take your place by the Hokage's side so he may make it official!" He somewhat tugged his hood to make sure his head was covered, obviously not liking the attention on him.

Minato smiled as Kakashi walked towards him. When the silver-haired man was roughly two arm lengths from the blonde, he knelt. The kitsune waived his right over the other when he said out loud, "As Fourth Hokage, I hereby grant thee title of Fifth Hokage! The next to lead the Yokai should I no longer be able to!" Minato then tapped the silver-haired man on the forehead when he said, "Now, rise if you accept your new duties."

With that, the silver-haired man stood to his feet, and the Yokais gathered around and started cheering. A lot of the Gargoyles joined in the applause. A few of the humans also applaud, most of them probably did it out of politeness. One of the humans, the one called Iruka, stood among the Gargoyles and Yokais rather than the others of his species. Though he didn't seem to care or felt out of place. In fact, Iruka had more of a kinship with the Yokais than the other humans that lived in castle Wyvern.

Soon enough, the festivities truly began. To both celebrate the victory against the Vikings and the completion of the next Hokage trial of the Yokais.

}{

Food, water, and spirit were available for all. The celebration of the victory against the Vikings and the selection of the next Hokage of the Yokai.

One of the angel-like yokais had fair skin and long black hair, has featureless white eyes with a slight lavender tint, he wore a beige-coloured shirt, a dull blue shirt beneath that, and mesh armour beneath that, paired with dark blue sandals with open toes, and wrapped bandages around his right arm, chest, and right leg, he tied his hair back in a loose ponytail tied a few inches above the end, a black headband with two straps that frame the sides of his face. The other angel-like yokai was a slender girl with fair-complexion with the same featureless white eyes with a lavender tint, she has dark blue hair that she keeps in a bob-cut that was cut just above her forehead akin to a bowl-cut with chin-length strands framing her face, and was wearing the same thing the other angel yokai was wearing with the only difference being the size and shape . These two angel-like yokai moved close to Kakashi as the celebration continued.

The angel-like yokai with the longer hair fluttered his white wings when he said, "Congratulations on earning the position of 5th, Father." The other angel-like yokai nodded in agreement as she wrapped one of her wings around Kakashi in a timid manner.

The silver-haired yokai wrapped his arms around the younger ones when he said fondly, "Thank you, Neji, Hinata. But you two do know that you have to do your part for the clans, right?"

The timid angel-like Yokai, Hinata, nodded in a weary manner as the other, Neji, stated in a more sure tone, "I know and I shall fulfill my duties."

From just his visible eye, you could tell that Kakashi was smiling. He ruffled the Angel-like yokais' hair affectionately when he said, "Good, but don't forget to take time to be yourselves." Both Neji and Hinata nodded in agreement.

A perch away, Itachi watched the festivities. He wasn't interested in participating in these events, but it was amusing to watch. He sat on an open ledge as he pulled a leg to his chest and rested his chin on that knee with his arms wrapped around that leg. The Tengu's talons on that foot easily kept its grip on the edge of the ledge.

"Oi! Itachi!" someone below called out to the Tengu.

Itachi looked directly down to see who was calling. There he spotted some of the younger Yokais waving at him; the blonde girl with the third eye and the floating disembodied hands; Ino, the younger shadow Yokai: Shikamaru, the younger butterfly Yokai; Choji, Naruto, and the ice-using Yokai; Haku The Tengu smiled at them before he hopped off the ledge and glided down to the group when he asked, "Enjoying the festivities?" The teenagers nodded at the question.

Ino then looked around when she asked, "But where is Sasuke?" All six of the blonde girl’s disembodied hands were mimicking the same motions as her attached hands were doing, twiddling.

Naruto couldn't help but grumble, "Who cares. It's his fault that he's missing out on the fun." That earned him an elbow to the gut by the blonde girl. The other guys couldn't help but let out a weary exhale.

With a small smile, Itachi stated calmly, "I'm sure Sasuke isn't far and is just enjoying the festivities in his own way." He noticed the mass of food on Choji's plate when he added, "Like some of you."

This was when the big, chubby blue Gargoyle glided down when he said as he held a pair of turkey legs in hands, "Yo! Choji, I snagged you a leg!"

Choji's eyes sparked in joy when he stated chipperly, "Thanks, Brother!"

When the big, blue Gargoyle landed, he gave the Butterfly-Yokai one turkey leg before they both bit into the tender meat.

Haku folded his arms in amusement when he said, "Choji and that brother are too much alike."

Shikimaru shrugged when he stated broadly, "A little, but it helps them get along." He let out a sigh before he told the other yokai, "I'm going to find the smart, green brother and see if he wants to do some mind puzzles with me." He waved at the others before he headed off to find that particular Gargoyle.

Meanwhile…

Sasuke peered around a tree to see if anyone was near the grave while keeping himself hidden.

There was only one, a familiar yokai that wore a gray hood and long cloak. Shino was kneeling in front of the grave, speaking softly to it.

The tengu let out a sigh of relief at this before he hid himself back behind the tree as he went over everything. His talons were cleaned and polished, feathers were preen to perfection, his hair has been washed, and he had a small patch of light purple flowers that resembled little bells. Sasuke quickly brushed his bangs a bit to make them shine before he took a deep breath and then walked over to the grave.

Shino went quiet before he looked over his shoulder to see who was coming. He relaxed at who he saw when he said softly, "Oh, evening, Sasuke. Are you here to visit father?"

The Tengu gave the other a small smile when he said, "I was going to tell him what happened, but you seemed to already have done that." He held up the bell-shaped flowers when he added, "I found some of Shibi-Sama's favorite flowers."

This seemed to pirk Shino up when he said in amazement, "You managed to find those?”

Sasuke walked over when he said, "I happened to have found a nice patch during a patrol fight one night." He carefully knelt next to the other yokai as he placed the flowers at the base of the grave stone and said, "I figured tonight warranted a few flowers."

Shino nodded when he said softly, "A new Hokage candidate has been chosen and victory against the invaders." He looked at the gravestone when he added, "I am sure father would have approved of both… And glad Kakashi earned the title…"

Sasuke moved one of his wings to gently wrap around the other when he vocalised softly, "You're doing good as the South Pillar… Shibi-Sama would be proud of you."

Shino somewhat leaned into the soft feathers when he said softly, "Thank you Sasuke."

The tengu nodded before they stayed where they were for a few minutes, as they offered their prayers to the grave stone.

Neither of these yokai cared much for the loud celebration of castle Wyvern. Here was fine for them.

}{

One of the female Gargoyles, the one with waist-long bright red hair, pale blue skin, dark eyes, and somewhat deep purple underside to her wings, wearing a small gold tiara to keep her hair out of her eyes, a pair of matching earrings, a gold armband, and a gold anklet, wore a white cloth that showed off her midriff and had one of the arms of the top on her right shoulder was watching the festivities from one of the corridors of the castle with a frown. As much as she disliked the humans and their 'issues', she knew they were needed for her clan's protection during the day. But there had to be other ways to be protected during the day.

"Please tell me you're not that upset about Kakashi taking the title of 5th Hokage rather than me, Sister?" Zabuza asked as he walked to the same window the female gargoyle was looking out of. He leaned against the wall as he glanced down at the festivities When he asked, "Not interested in the festivities? Or is something else on your mind?" Zabuza smiled when he saw Haku having a nice conversation with the other yokai.

The red-haired Gargoyle narrowed her eyes at the humans enjoying themselves when she told the mist-yokai, "I guess you can say that." She glanced at the Yokai when she asked, "Tell me, would it be possible to make more of those 'Kyō no Ōbu' things?"

Zabuza raised a brow at the question when he replied in an unsure tone, "Uh, it is, but it takes an entire night, only on the full moon, with the complete focus of the Four Pillars, and only one Kyō no Ōbu will get made." He looked at the gargoyle when he added, "The Hokage has already asked the Four Pillars to try to make another orb during the next full moon."

The female Gargoyle placed a hand on her chin when she asked, "How many of these are there now?"

Zabuza wasn't sure what the other was thinking when he replied, "Three that are fully powered, but two that need a few nights before they can be used again…"

This gargoyle narrowed her eyes at the festivities below when she mused. "So five Kyō no Ōbu as of now."

Zabuza folded his arms as he continued to lean against the wall and asked, "Is there a reason you're asking about them?" Right now, he wasn't getting a good feeling about this sudden interest in the orbs that allow some of the Yokais to function during the day. That was when he noticed where the red-headed gargoyle was glaring, or rather whom she was glaring at. Zabuza let out a sigh when he told the gargoyle, "Sister, I understand your weariness towards the humans, but they aren't all bad. You just need to find some common ground and be friendly with them." He thought about his words for a bit before he added, "Just pretend you're interacting with Iruka if that will help with your interactions."

The female gargoyle glanced at the mist-based yokai when she stated sternly, "Iruka was raised among the Yokai and is practically one of them."

Zabuza nodded when he said, "Exactly, and that could help you interact with the humans better." He shrugged when he added, "You don't have to get along with all of the humans living here, but you should at least understand them a little better."

The redheaded gargoyle folded her arms when she grumbled out, "I'll think about that…"

Zabuza nodded when he said, "Good, and besides, Magnus has been courting Kakashi for a while, so maybe try being friendly with him first." He snickered when he added, "He's been blocked by Neji a good number of times, so that should be fun to watch if it happens."

The female gargoyle seemed to frown when she said, "If you say so…"

Not dissuaded by the other’s mood and trying to cheer her up, Zabuza took the gargoyle by the wrist in a friendly manner when he said in an amused tone, "Come now, Sister, go join your chosen mate and enjoy the night." With that he pulled the gargoyle to one of the balconies that looked over the castle.

The redheaded female gargoyle couldn't help but smile at her friend’s antics before they took flight. Her spreading her wings to glide and him turning his lower half into mist to float on the air.

The blue gargoyle with the waist long red hair could dislike the humans later, now was for celebrating the night's victory and the choosing of the 5th Hokage. The red headed gargoyle joined Goliath in admiring the rest of the clan, celebrating as Zabuza joined the other adult Yokais in conversations. Minato smiled as he watched his son interact with the Gargoyles and other Yokais. Neji seemed to glare as Magnus chatted with Kakashi, Hinata tried her best to keep her brother at bay so he wouldn’t interrupt the courting. Naruto tried to flirt with a few of the females during the festivities, but wasn’t having much luck.

Tonight was for the Gargoyles and Yokai.

To be continued in Awakening Part 1.

Gale-Dragon : I've been working on this prologue off and on for roughly two years or so. I honestly don’t remember, I just got the idea after reading the Gargoyles: Naruto Version (It’s incomplete, but what’s written so far is pretty good). I already have a few plot ideas regarding this story that I'm going to work on on the side. And before anyone asks, yes, I know I'm leaving out a lot of the Shinobis from the Naruto series in this, but don't worry, they'll come into play later in the story. As you noticed, I've made a few changes regarding the Naruto characters I did use for this part of the story (aside from the Yokai species), there's a reason for that, of which will be touched on later in the story. Regarding the pairings that are going to be present, eh, I'll let the story dictate that.
