Chapter Text
2018. The Garden.
In a desolate world that was filled with plant life, a portal opened up in the middle of an open field. The portal was like a black hole. A giant purple alien man came out of the portal and landed on the field. He had a gaping wound in the middle of his chest that was the result of a powerful axe named Stormbreaker that was thrown by an Asgardian Thunder God named Thor Odinson that landed itself deep into his chest in Wakanda. Thanos used his remaining strength to use all six Infinity Stones to snap his fingers inside the Infinity Gauntlet to fufill his mission of restoring balance to the universe by wiping out half of all life in the universe, which ultimately resulted in half of the population of the planet Earth to disintegrate into dust. That resulted in the biggest act of mass genocide the world has ever seen. Billions of people vanished into dust without any explanation. After fulfilling his goal of wiping out half the population of the universe, Thanos used one of the Infinity Stones to open up a portal to escape from Wakanda to a desolate planet that he called the Garden, which was where he planned on retiring to after he had fulfilled his ultimate goal.
Thanos had tried many times in the past to try and obtain the six Infinity Stones to fulfill his goal of restoring balance to the universe. In 2012, he had hired the Asgardian God of Mischief Loki to start the Chitauri Invasion that led S.H.I.E.L.D. to hire a group of superheroes called the Avengers to stop the alien invasion in what had become known as the Battle of New York, which stopped Thanos's attempts at getting the Tesseract a.k.a. The Space Stone. There are six Infinity Stones that were created at the advent of the Big Bang that created six singularites in the universe. The Infinity Stones came in many different colors and had wildly different powers that were unique to each stone. The six Infinity Stones were as followed:
The Space Stone: a blue colored stone that was once encased in a glowing blue cube called the Tesseract. It was wielded by many different individuals over the years such as Johann Schmidt a.k.a. The Red Skull, a German man who had acquired the Space Stone during World War 2 in the year 1942 in Norway. The Red Skull had planned on using the Tesseract to use it's power to mass-produce a line of advanced military weaponry. The Tesseract's power was beyond what he had initially imagined and it gave him enough confidence to betray the Third Reich entirely to make his own plans of world domination using the power of the Tesseract. In 1945, Schmidt had managed to refine the power of the Tesseract into a series of devastating bombs and his own personal aircraft through which he had planned on attacking the United States.
His plane was boarded by Captain America, with the chaos of him battling the Red Skull shaking the Tesseract free from its restraints. When Johann Schmidt had seized the glowing blue cube, it suddenly activated, and in disgust with his abuse of its power had banished him to the planet called Vormir, where he was forced to guard the Soul Stone, knowing that he wouldn't be able to make the sacrifice required for its power. The Tesseract than burned a hole through the decks of the Valkyrie, where it eventually came to rest in the middle of the Arctic Ocean where it was soon found by Howard Stark. After helping to found the government agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division), Howard Stark began to study the Tesseract for some time and he eventually theorized a new element that was based on its atomic structure. Due to the limitations of the technology of the time, Howard Stark wasn't able to actually synthesize the new element and so he instead decided to subsitute it with another element called Palladium, which he used in his various Arc Reactor prototypes. Howard had left detailed notes on both the Tesseract and his new element in the hopes that his son Tony Stark would one day succeed where he had failed. Following Howard Stark's passing in 1991, the Tesseract had remained in the custody of S.H.I.E.L.D.
In 1989, The Tesseract had eventually found its way into the possession of a group called Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. (Potential Energy Group - Alternate Sources - United States), which was a joint venture between S.H.I.E.L.D., NASA, and the United States Air Force that was founded by a woman named Wendy Lawson, who would later become a Kree soldier named Mar-Vell. Mar-Vell had studied the Tesseract's power which led her to create a Light Speed Engine to help the Skrulls, a alien race who had the ability to shapeshift and mimic virtually anybody on Earth flawlessly, under her protection. Mar-Vell's research of the Tesseract eventually drew the attention of a man named Yon-Rogg who was a Kree Empire commander and the leader of a group of space mercenaries known as Starforce, who had sought to claim the Tesseract for the Kree Empire only for the Light Speed Engine to be completely destroyed when he had come to confront the rogue scientist, its Space Stone derived energies had bathed and bonded itself to an United States Air Force pilot named Carol Danvers. In truth however, The Tesseract had been safely stored within Mar-Vell's orbital laboratory.
Six years later in 1995, the Starforce had arrived at Mar-Vell's laboratory, which was located in a Kree spaceship, to try and claim the cube for themselves but Carol Danvers along with her allies Maria Rambeau and S.H.I.E.L.D. Nicholas Fury had managed to keep the Tesseract from the Kree by storing it inside a Fonz and the Happy Days lunchbox before an alien feline creature called a Flerken by the name of Goose (who was named after one of the characters from the movie Top Gun (1986)) had swallowed the Tesseract and stored it within the pocket dimensions that were stored within her body. Goose later vomited up the Tesseract on Nicholas Fury's desk.
In 2010, the World Security Council had successfully restarted Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. in an attempt to try and harness the Tesseract's power into advanced weaponry like the Red Skul had tried to do during World War 2. Following the Asgardian God of Thunder Thor's arrival to Earth, S.H.I.E.L.D. hired an astrophysicist named Dr. Erik Selvig to study the alien artifact and accelerate it's progress. In order to safely contain the cosmic cube, Selvig had built a Tesseract Accelerater in an attempt to try and harness the power of the Tesseract. Two years later in 2012, the Asgardian God of Mischief known as Loki had met up with Thanos aboard his ship called Sanctuary, who agreed to supply him with an entire Chitauri army with which to conquer Earth in exchange for the Tesseract. Loki found the Tesseract at a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility in New Jersey where he had mind controlled several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and personnel, including Clint Barton and Erik Selvig, to safely contain the Tesseract's energies within Tesseract Accelerator to open up a wormhole to let the Chitauri invade Earth through. The Chitauri made landfall in New York City where they were defeated by a superhero team called the Avengers.
Afterwards, Thor used the power of the Space Stone within the Tesseract to take it, along with himself and Loki back to Asgard (In an alternate timeline when the Avengers time travelled to the year 2012 in New York to get the Space Stone from Loki, Ant-Man had the 2012 version of Tony Stark cause a mild cardiac arythmia as a distraction to get the 2023 future version of Tony Stark who had disguised himself as one of the guards of Stark Industries to steal the Tesseract from within its case, which was then thwarted when the Hulk had inadvertently knocked him over with the door that led to the stairs in a fit of rage that he was forced to take the stairs down to the lobby causing the Tesseract to be stolen by Loki which forces Tony Stark and Steve Rogers to go to Camp Lehigh in New Jersey in 1970 to obtain the Tesseract there).
Once he and Loki returned to Asgard, Thor entrusted his friend and gatekeeper Heimdall to protect the Tesseract, who then used its power to rebuild the Bifrost which was a rainbow bridge that allowed the Asgardians to travel between the nine realms. It was then stored within Odin's vault in Asgard. That was until the following year when after managing to gain possession of the Reality Stone, the Asgardians felt that it was unwise to keep two of the Infinity Stones: the Space and Reality stones in Odin's vault so they instead travelled to a planet called Knowhere where they gave the Reality Stone to the Collector to have him store it in his museum.
In 2017, Thor's long lost sister Hela came to Asgard and inspected the treasures that were in Odin's vault. She admitted that the Tesseract was "not bad" but she wanted the Eternal Flame rather than the Tesseract. Loki then went into Odin's vault and secretly stole the Tesseract while trying to enact Ragnarok, an apocalyptic event that had destroyed Asgard when Odin died and Hela took over. The prophecy of Ragnarok was fufilled when Asgard was destroyed by Hela and the fire demon Sutur, which led to the deaths of almost all of the Asgardians with the exception of Thor, Hulk, Loki Valkyrie and Heimdall among some other Asgardians who were lucky to survive Asgard's descruction aboard a ship called the Statesmen. The Statesmen was soon attacked by Thanos's forces aboard his ship called the Sanctuary II. Half of the Asgardians who were on board the ship were slaughtered by Thanos and his followers. Thanos had saught to extract the Space Stone from the Tesseract, which Loki had taken from Odin's vault on Asgard shortly before it was destroyed. Loki attempted to use the Tesseract as a distraction long enough for the Hulk to defeat Thanos. Thanos easily defeated the Hulk and crushed the Tesseract in his bare hands, revealing the Space Stone within it. Thanos then put the Space Stone inside the Infinity Gauntlet, a metallic glove that was designed to hold all six of the Infinity Stones at once and enables whoever weilds it the ability to harness the powers of the stones to initiate destruction upon worlds, warp reality among other things.
Loki tried to assassinate Thanos using one of his small daggers, but Thanos had used the Space Stone to prevent him from trying to assassinate him before proceeding to lift Loki off the ground by his neck with one hand and proceeded to snap his neck which killed the Asgardian God of Mischief for good. After he killed Loki, Thanos used the Space Stone to teleport him and his followers Ebony Maw, Cull Obsidian, Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive, known as the Black Order out of the ruined Asgardian ship. Thanos soon used the Space Stone to travel to the planet known as Knowhere to obtain the Reality Stone from the Collector's museum, where he had abducted his surrogate daughter Gamora. Thanos brought Gamora back to his ship where he had abducted his other daughter Nebula, where he proceeded to use both the Space and Power Stones to torture Nebula which forced Gamora to reveal the location of the Soul Stone, which was on the planet Vormir. Thanos and Gamora went to the planet Vormir to get the Soul Stone, which was guarded by The Red Skull, who had spent the past 73 years between World War 2 and present day of 2018 guarding the Soul Stone for anyone who wished to obtain it.
