Chapter 1: Number 11

Chapter Text

_____

It was a sunny and fresh day at Toyokawa Highschool. Today there was a soccer match between the soccer club members, a lot of girls who had crushes on the players and soccer loving boys came to watch. Yuki was neither of them, he came simply just because he thought he might find inspiration for a new music piece he’d been trying to finish (or he said to himself).

He sat on the bleachers, away from the excited girls and loud guys. He had a notebook on his lap and a pen between his fingers that he just twirled for now. He scribbled something on his notebook then sighed softly. He put the pen between the pages and closed the notebook, he took his chin on his hand and glanced at the field, he thought he might find an inspiration for himself.

Players were still at the middle of the match, there were two teams. The red team, and the blue team. Yuki wasn’t supporting neither. He didn’t know any of those guys anyways, some were on his class, some tried to talk to him but he didn’t remember anyone he didn’t care, so they were all new to him…except one guy. An underclassman of Yuki.

His name was Momo, Sunohara Momose…The soccer club captain even though he was only a 2nd year. Yuki did remember him, his face, his name, his number, his eye color. Momo did stand out after all, he left an impression on Yuki.

______

It was few months ago when he first came across to Momo. Yuki was at the music classroom as usual, playing with the strings of his guitar. He was playing a new song he composed, melody was good and melancholic even the perfectionist Yuki was kind of proud of it.

As Yuki continued to play, the door of music classroom slowly opened. Yuki didn’t notice anything at first, he finished the melody few seconds later and raised his head from the guitar, then his eyes drifted towards the door, someone was peeking.

Yuki tilted his head to side in confusion and the person peeking startled from Yuki’s sudden glance.

“A-A-Ah!! I’m sorry!!”

The person yelled and suddenly opened the door. He had fluffy black hair, slightly tanned skin, now flushed with pink near his cheekbones and big, wide fuchsia eyes. He was wearing the usual school uniform, the first buttons of his shirt unbuttoned.

“I-I’m really sorry! You think I’m a creepy person now, right? like because I listened to you play the guitar secretly at door for 10 minutes straight!

He said, fast and nervously. Then suddenly he noticed he gave himself away. The boy nervously put his hands on his mouth to stop himself from saying more embarrassing stuff.

Yuki glanced at boy calmly and quietly, as if studying him. Boys eyes met his and boy quickly looked away, the pink on his cheeks turning into a reddish color.

Yuki shook his head.

“I didn’t say you’re a creepy person.”

Yuki said simply.

Boy pulled his hands away from his mouth slowly and talked.

“…You don’t think so…?”

Yuki shook his head again.

“No. Do you like it?”

He asked, boy tilted his head to side.

“Huh…?”

Yuki sighed softly.

“The music, I mean.”

Then boy smiled excitedly, his earlier embarrassment nowhere to be seen. He nodded fast.

“Yeah! That’s why I stood there, listened and listened! It was really melancholic, seriously got me all emotional and stuff! Like…the walls are getting closer and closer, slowly crushing you!”

He said, then his blush intensified.

“D-Did I say too much…?”

Yuki’s eyes were wide. That was exactly the feeling he was going for, he felt like that a lot of times after all. Yuki quickly shook his head.

“No, that was exactly what I was going for. You get it.”

He said, a slight hint of smile forming on his lips.

“What is your name?”

Yuki asked, as if he decided boy was a person that his name is worth to be known.

“M-Momo…Sunohara Momose! But you can just call me Momo!”

Momo said with a sudden rush of excitement coming through him.

Yuki nodded, then called his name. Almost tasting it on his lips.

“Momo…”

He glanced at Momo with somewhat softened eyes.

“And I’m Yuki. Orikasa Yukito, you can call me Yuki, Momo-kun.”

Momo nodded.

“Okay! Yuki-san then!”

And that was how they came across to eachother for the first time, that day Yuki offered to play one more time for Momo and Momo accepted flusteredly. They chatted a bit afterwards and the day just passed.

After that day they didn’t talk much. Just simple waves from Momo when they came across eachother. Yuki tried to get closer to Momo, but for a reason, Yuki couldn’t help but to feel like Momo was running away from him purposely.

_____

Match continued at full speed, Momo was running around, stealing the ball and yelling at his teammates for tactics. He was clearly the ace of the match. Yuki’s eyes only followed Momo, he didn’t care about others, Momo was the only important person on the field for Yuki.

“He’s fast…his legs look strong…”

Yuki thought to himself, then in seconds Momo goaled. That was his second goal so far. His team was ahead.

Yuki couldn’t help but to get impressed. So this is what Momo likes…his hobby…like music but different.

Then coach blew the whistle, announcing that it was break time.

Momo was immediately surrounded by his teammates, laughing, ruffling his hair and slinging their arms on his shoulders. Celebrating his goals.

Then Momo glanced at the bleachers as he found himself a moment to drink water, he noticed Yuki sitting there.

Yuki got surprised slightly when Momo noticed him, but without thinking a lot he smiled at Momo.

Momo’s eyes widened and he immediately coughed while drinking his water, looking away shyly with flushed cheeks and wiping his mouth to back of his hand.

Yuki watched him with a fond gaze.

“He is really cute…”

Yuki muttered to himself. Then looked down to the closed notebook on his lap, he opened it carefully and took his pen back to his hand. He draw a little heart next to the number 11.

Then the break ended, the 11 numbered boy put his bottle on the grass and ran back to play.
