Work Text:
It's been a month since Bert moved in with his wife Bertha.
At first, Ernie supported their relationship and was Bert's wingman. But once Bert started spending more time with Bertha, he felt like he was getting more distant from him.
Now that Bert had moved out, Ernie felt like he lost a part of himself.
He stayed outside until it was nighttime. Trying to fill the void as he hung out with his other friends.
Once he goes back to the apartment, it feels too quiet.
Ernie calls Bert every night, trying his best to stretch out their conversation. It's nice to know that Bert isn't completely out of his life, but it still feels weird that he doesn't live with him anymore.
One day as Ernie was getting ready to go outside, there was a knock on the door.
A muffled voice followed the knock.
"That's one knock!"
He knew it was The Count.
Ernie opens the door just before Count could get in a second knock.
"Ernie, how wonderful it is to see you!" Count spread his arms wide, hugging him.
"Hey, Count, what're doing here?" He asked as Count pulled away.
"Just wanted to stop by and see how you're doing."
He scratched the back of his head, unsure if he should tell him how much he misses Bert.
Usually, Bert would be the one comforting him. Just the thought makes him want to tear up, but he can't keep this to himself.
"Count, can I tell you something?"
"Why, of course! What's been bothering you?" Count slightly tilted his head.
Ernie fidgeted with his hands. "Well, ever since Bert moved away I've been feeling a little lonely. Don't get me wrong I'm happy for him but things just haven't been the same."
He felt tears forming in his eyes. Quickly, he wiped them away with his handkerchief.
Count's thought about what to say for a moment. His brows furrowed trying to think of something to cheer up his friend. Then something came to his mind.
"When I miss a friend what helps me is that I count the memories I have with them! Tell me what do you remember?"
"Hmmm..." Ernie's eyes landed on where Bert's chair used to be.
"Oh! I remember this one time it was Bert's birthday..."
Ernie listed about 10 memories.
"Thanks Count, talking about the times I've spent with Bert made me feel a little better," Ernie said as he held out the door for him.
"It was my pleasure! But I best be going now, things aren't going to count themselves!" Count said as he walked out of the apartment.
He still missed Bert but at least he got it out of his chest. Ernie walked to the window and rested his arms.
"I wonder what Bert is doing right now."
