Chapter Text
The rain thundered hard against the deck, steadily pouring down from the mast and spraying mist from the ocean. Waves crashed steadily, knocking the boat side to side.
He could not see within 10 feet of the boat, holding tight to the main mast so the sea did not take it, even as it called for him, desperate for it to be dragged into its tides, down into a depth where he would freeze far long before he drowned.
His captain called again, their voice traveling not far, the rain blotting it into distant commands now drowned out by the constant fall of rain. His hat dipped low, and his prosthetic hand clothes tighter to the mast as the ship swayed again. Lightning lit up the night, dancing off the waves with glittering hues.
He heaved himself upwards, using the ladder to claw his way to the crows nest, the waves threatening to throw him overboard, to leave it stranded. He dug his fingers into the worn slabs and managed to throw himself up into the crows nest.
Rain poured from it, like a bowl not able to hold its due. He could make out the forms of his captain, trying to correct the ship, to guide them out of the storm. He could see the 12 other crew mates, running around on board.
The Oblivion creaked again and the crows nest swayed, clutching hard to the mast as the waved swayed the deck relentlessly. His captain called out again, something in panic that he could not make out.
The ship rocked one more time, and The Oblivion swayed, turning heavily. The water nearby..swirled. A spiral leading down deep, a whirlpool that was certain fate for each and every one of them.
The Oblivion was not strong enough to fight it, not strong enough with her torn silver sails and crying boards. She took them starboard, threatening to tip over. The waves swallowed the bilge first, and then the deck. He watched his comrades go under, and then it was his turn. The world faded to inky black, the cold seeped into his flesh.
There was no sun. No light for him to go to. He sank down, for the current too strong to let him free, and his eyes flickered close. A bubble pillowed the surface, but nothing came up but a singular, broken plank.
