Work Header

wait for me

Summary:

(Not him, never the bastard son that even his own father didn't want, but a daughter of Zeus who never made it to Camp anyway.)

(It's uncharitable to think about her like that; her tree saved his life and likely hundreds of other demigod lives, and she saved Luke's life with that sacrifice, but the truth stands. There is nothing that holds them together, in his view.)

And he can't take it. There's no way he'll let his cousin take the last time he'll get to see his husband alive.
(The small of his back burns.)

Work Text:

Percy will be the first to admit that he’s never truly gotten along with his cousin Thalia. It’s half their fathers — Zeus and Poseidon have their rivalry — and half their very own creation.

(She never reached out to him.)

There was no point in him trying to befriend her, not when she refused to listen and she was everyone's favorite.

There is nothing that holds them together, in his view.)

... But he still loves her. That's still his cousin. Someone who's had his back for years - someone who came with him, someone who fought with him, someone who forced him to shoulder the prophecy that everyone thought would kill him - someone who's cupping his husband's face and telling him to look at her-

And he can't take it.

Luke is his.

There's no way he'll let his cousin take the last time he'll get to see his husband alive.

(The small of his back burns. He thinks of his mom - Luke's mother-in-law - and ties her memory around him as he moves. It's the least he can do to stay alive.)

"Luke," he says quietly, shoving at his cousin until she gives way.

Luke's eyes are blue. They're back to being blue, instead of the gold that he'd hated seeing in Luke's face. His voice is soft and sweet and Percy can feel the tears building in the back of his throat as he lets out a sob. It strangles him to the core to let it out.

"Baby," Luke murmurs, coughing. “Oh, I- I’m sorry.”

“You didn’t do anything,” Percy rasps, lacing their fingers together. He ignores the way Thalia — thief, whispers a part of his mind, the part too possessive for his own good, she tried to take him away from me — raises her voice, the way Annabeth is just as loud. He can’t let them take this, too. “Well, you did a hell of a lot. But you didn’t do anything here.”

”Heh.” Luke’s laugh is a small, wry thing, painful in the way he dies. “Did you ever-”

Percy smiles, teary and broken even as he feels his mortal spot burn, “You don’t need to ask.”

“Did you ever- want me?”

“I loved you, Luke.” It’s the only thing he can say. It echoes in the hall where his husband will die. “I always will. Wait for me.”

“Try for three times,” he croaks, “the Isles.”

“I’ll come with.”

“I don’t want to see you for decades, baby,” Luke says, “please. I’ll miss you- as long as- take your time.”

“Wait for me.” Percy begs, because if Luke leaves him again - before they ever have the chance to truly exist together - he doesn’t think he’d survive that.

“Always.”

“… I love you.”

(He watches his mortal spot die there. He watches half of his tie to the Earth leave him, and Percy curls himself over Luke’s body and blocks his cousin and Annabeth out.

They have never cried over the other, and he won’t let himself start now.)

(We need a shroud. A shroud for the son of Hermes who killed himself to save the world. A shroud for the Hero of Olympus. A shroud for Luke Castellan, the boy who loved so much he nearly destroyed the world for it.)
