The sudden downpour hit as they were walking home from a case, glad of the cool air and companionable silence in the early spring morning after a tense and difficult case.
Lucy watched George’s brow furrow, saw Lockwood’s jaw tense, the long years of shouldering adult responsibilities bowing down their teenage backs.
With more feeling than intention, she thought back to the snatches of joy she’d had in her too-short childhood.
It was the work of a moment to grab the boys’ hands in hers and pull them into the deserted road, running with gleeful abandon towards the rapidly-forming puddles.
