1 to 10

Summary:

He’s been nervous his whole life, but nothing compares to the moment he’s attempting to propose. After years as childhood friends, he finally dares to say what's in his heart: that you are everything he could want—or need. What follows may not go entirely according to plan, but when love demands bravery, messes are worth the magic.

Work Text:

Your gaze
Filled with worries
I’ll confront them like this
With confidence in my eyes

The words you want to hear
The things you want
I want to give them all to you

Sungjin had never been more nervous in his entire life, but he was doing his very best to hide that from you.

The fact that you looked so worried was actually helping to boost his confidence, but… then again… you were probably worried because he was basically making a giant mess out of this proposal.

So, he stopped what he was saying. He pressed his lips shut, shook his head to himself, and then lifted his gaze to meet yours once more.

“Please, forgive me,” he murmured, setting his hat down on a nearby side table and taking a step closer to you. “I’m not making much sense, am I?”

You answered him with a shaky smile and said, “Well… not particularly. But, please. Do go on.”

Sungjin took a deep breath and attempted to compose himself before starting over. He tried to think of what he could say to truly express himself, but he also tried to think of what he could say to convince you his feelings were true.

“I know we have known each other… all our lives, practically,” he began. “And I have always cherished you as a friend, as I believe you have done to me.”

“Yes, of course,” you replied softly.

Sungjin blinked, letting his eyes stay closed for just a second longer before lifting his gaze to you with all the confidence he could muster.

“Recently, my feelings for you have evolved. I have realized just how beautiful and intelligent and caring and witty you are, among other things, and it has led me to understand that you are everything I could ever want… everything I could ever need. I would consider myself the luckiest man on Earth if you… would consent to being my wife.”

“What should we do today?”
There’s no need for those words
At any time,
I’ll prepare everything to suit your taste

Babe from 1 to 10
(I’ll give it all, give it all for you)
I’ll give you everything you want
(I’ll give it all, give it all for you)
I know you
There’s no one else that knows you,
Nobody loves you
More than me baby

Ooh ooh ooh ooh (1 to 10, 1 to 10)
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh (1 to 10, 1 to 10)
Nobody loves you
More than me baby

Sungjin couldn’t stop a small, amused smile from tugging at his lips when you let out a soft groan and stormed out of the room. He knew he shouldn’t be smiling at your frustrations – you were his fiancée, after all – but you were just so cute when you were frustrated!

Once he heard you slam the front door of your house behind you, he turned to your mother and bowed his head. “Please excuse me.”

And then he went off to follow you.

Unsurprisingly, you were hiding behind the large Oak tree near the front of your house, one the two of you had climbed innumerable times as children. When Sungjin approached you, he didn’t even need to say anything – you blurted out the answer to the question he had been about to ask.

“Yes, I am fine,” you sighed, crossing your arms over your chest. “I just wish my mother didn’t insist on helping with the wedding plans! She’s not even helping, she’s just trying to tell me what to do!”

Sungjin pressed his lips together, came to stand in front of you, and put his hands gently on your upper arms.

“I know, my love,” he answered quietly.

“She doesn’t even give me any time to think, so now I feel like I have no idea what I even want for our wedding!” you cried, clearly distressed.

Sungjin squeezed your arms, but before he could try to comfort you again, you furrowed your brow and continued on.

“…What do you want? What should we do?”

With a soft sigh, Sungjin let his hands slide down your arms. He grasped your fingers and replied, “I want what will make you happy. We should do whatever you would like. All I care about is that, by the end of the day, I will be married to you.”

A tiny grin curved your lips, and you squeezed his hands. “I would like to banish my mother from making any further plans. Can we do that?”

Of course, Sungjin laughed at your words. But then he had to shake his head. “You are her only daughter. I fear it would not be right to exclude her, at least not entirely.”

You sighed with disappointment, frowning and pursing your lips. “You are right, I know. But how do I tell her I just want a small, simple ceremony?”

Sungjin looked into your eyes for a few moments, searching your face as if it held the answer he needed. He then released your hands and pulled you up into his embrace, his heart flipping when he felt you press your face into the crook of his neck.

“Whatever you do, whatever you tell her, I will be there. By your side. I will always support you,” he murmured. “Because I love you with all my heart. With everything I am.”

When it’s tough
Telling you “It’ll be okay”
I don’t like doing that
I’ll be worrying with you, by your side

You don’t have to know
Just trust and follow me
At any time,
I’ll prepare everything to match your mood

Once you were able to convince your mother to let go of her own wishes and appeal to yours, the wedding planning process went much more smoothly. And even though Sungjin truly didn’t care what the ceremony was like, he stayed by your side through the whole thing.

He was glad of it, though, when it came time to plan the honeymoon.

You began to worry and stress too much about where you should go and how you would get there and where you would stay, so Sungjin decided to step in and take over.

“I will do it,” he’d offered – although it was more of an insistence. “Let me plan the honeymoon, and you focus on everything else.”

“Are you sure?” you’d asked hesitantly.

Sungjin had quirked his brow at you, a smirk pulling one corner of his lips. “You don’t trust me?” he’d teased.

And that, of course, had made you relent and leave the honeymoon in his capable hands.

But as the wedding day drew nearer and nearer, Sungjin found it wasn’t as easy to plan as he’d anticipated.

You hadn’t known where to go, and quite honestly, neither did he.

He had surveyed his map of the country countless times, but nowhere truly seemed quite right. He’d come up with many nice places, but… he wanted to take you to the perfect place.

So, really, all he’d done was transfer your worry to himself. That was still preferable, though; he would much rather bear any and all burdens in your stead than to see you suffer, even a little bit.

And besides, he knew that it didn’t truly matter where you went on your honeymoon. As long as you were together, that was all that mattered.

…But then he had the absolute perfect idea.

You don’t need to know
Where we gonna go
Whenever or wherever
I’ll give you what you want
I’ll find out
The wish you’ve been hiding
Deep in your heart

Babe from 1 to 10
(I’ll give it all, give it all for you)
I’ll give you everything you want
(I’ll give it all, give it all for you)
I know you
There’s no one else that knows you,
Nobody loves you
More than me baby

“I can’t believe you still have not told me where we’re going!” you giggled after Sungjin closed the door to the carriage.

The ceremony – small and simple – had gone off without a hitch, and the two of you were now off on your first journey together as a married couple.

“Why do you need to know?” Sungjin chuckled. “It’s not enough to simply find out when we get there?”

“No, it certainly is not,” you retorted. “I want to know now!”

Sungjin simply leaned over and pressed a slow kiss to your lips. “Patience, my love,” he whispered.

He felt your lips curve into a smile against his, and you reached up to cradle his face in your hands. “It will be much easier to have patience if you continue to kiss me.”

…Obviously, he liked the sound of that.

And you were now husband and wife, after all. There were no rules or regulations to keep you from kissing each other.

So, he did just that. He kissed you to his heart’s content, and before he knew it, the scenery outside changed from the rolling hills of the countryside to…

Before you could look through the window and see, Sungjin brought his hand up to your face and covered your eyes.

You let out a startled gasp. “What are you doing? Why can’t I look?”

“Tell me,” Sungjin began, placing his lips by your ear. “Where is it you’ve always longed to go but could not?”

Your brow furrowed under his hand, and you tilted your head curiously. “Always longed to go…” And then you went still. “…Sungjin. You don’t – you don’t mean…”

He lifted his hand, and your gaze snapped straight to the window of the carriage.

The second your eyes beheld the vast, sparkling sea, your jaw dropped. Your hands came up to cover your mouth, and your eyes filled with tears.

For as long as Sungjin could remember, you’d expressed a desire to visit the sea. As a child, you had loved reading and acting out stories about pirates and mermaids, but your father never had any interest in traveling. He would take your family into the city sometimes, but nothing more.

Sungjin was a bit ashamed he hadn’t thought of this earlier, but you had long since given up the idea since your father had never agreed to it.

Seeing the expression in your face, the joy in your eyes right now, he was more pleased with himself than he ever had been in his entire life.

…Well. Except for when he had finally managed to propose to you.

“Oh, Sungjin,” you breathed, your nose practically pressed to the window. But before he could say anything in return, you whirled around in your seat and threw your arms around his neck. “Thank you. Thank you so much, I don’t deserve you.”

Sungjin held you tightly to him, squeezing you as hard as he dared. “You do,” he answered. “You deserve this and so much more, and I am going to spend the rest of my life trying to show you just how much I love you.”

He really couldn’t think of anything else he wanted to do more.

…But then you kissed him, and he realized that was one thing he wanted to do more.

For the rest of his life.
