Chapter Text

Real... The word describes something actually existing, and not being fictional. The world has been taken over by a singular company over these past years, Nero Corporation. Lately, strange phenomenons have also started to happen. Unexplainable creatures appearing, noises with no discernable origin... People have dubbed these phenomenons "Digital Hauntings" due to the fact they seemingly appear near technology, no matter its age.

But enough preamble, you're here for a journey, aren't you? Well, since you're here already, I'll indulge you. Let's start with the first of our protagonists, Raito Kasagawe. They're not particularly interesting. Just a normal kid, with normal interests, that doesn't exactly like large crowds. "Urgh... Homework... And not even any fun topic..." they mutter. "Sigh... Maybe Miri can help...? Or Mit...? Urgh... Who am I kidding, Mitsuku is even worse at this than me..." Raito grumbled. Truth is, they are terrible at maths, despite their father being a scientist. "What's up, Rairai?" a voice asks. It's Raito's father, Takeru Kasagawe. "Please stop calling me that..." Raito mumbles. Takeru, in response, ruffles their hair. "Sorry, old habit. ...Maths, huh? Still don't get how you're bad at this, but I guess not everyone can be good at some things. Don't worry, if you need help, just ask me." Raito looked at their father. "...I've been trying to solve this for the last five hours," they answer. "The past five- Alright... How about a break...? Maybe you just need to clear your head..." Takeru says, trying to wrap his head around what his child just said. "Yeah. Sure. I'll be at the park, then." Takeru looks after Raito as they leave. "...Sigh... Back to work..."

The park was... weirdly quiet for the time of day. "...Why's it so... empty?" Raito asks themself. "Over here..." a voice beckons. "Huh? Who said that?!" Raito looks around, not seeing anything or anyone out of the ordinary. "Over here..." the voice beckons again. "...The old shed? ...What?" Raito felt weird, like this voice was calling for them specifically. "Over here..." Raito doesn't know why, but their legs just gravitated towards wherever that voice came from. Opening the shed door, Raito only found three chip-like sticks, and strange devices, glowing faintly. For some reason, Raito knew how to activate it. They hadn't ever seen this device before let alone heard of this, but... something about it seemed familiar... Pressing a button, the device turns on. "Insert drive," appears on it. "Drive...? The stick, probably..." As soon as Raito inserts it, a ball of blue... something appeared, materialising as a kind of white dragon with a scarf. "Well, this is... interesting. Tell me, where are we?" the being asks, circling Raito. "We're in Tokyo, Japan. But... Uhm... What exactly... are you? I don't think I've ever seen or heard of something like you." The dragon creature nods.. "I understand. My name is Huckmon. I am a Digimon, a being born from data. I do not know why I am here, though," the being, Huckmon, answers. "...It seems that you are carrying a Digital Visualiser System, or D-Vis for short. I wonder how you got one..."

"It was just... lying here, in this shed," Raito answers. They honestly didn't even know why the devices were lying here, obviously. "How interesting... Well, I suppose the answers will have to wait. I do hope you will tell me if there is anywhere for me to live in this world," Huckmon says. "I... Maybe I can explain you away as a pet to dad? Urgh... But his allergies... ...D-do you even invoke allergies? You said you were born from data?" Raito gives the dragon Digimon a questioning look. "That is correct. As for your concerns... I assure you, your father will be fine." Raito lets out a sigh of relieve. "I... really hope you're right... I guess we should go to my home...?" Huckmon nods. "I suppose such is an astute assumption. Let us go." Raito looks at Huckmon with an unamused expression. "...Could you not talk like you're from the 19th century?" Huckmon lets out a chuckle. "Haha, I do appologise. I did not realise how much humanity has evolved. I suppose my vocabulary comes from the data I absorbed during my birth. I will try to sound more modern, however I can not promise anything." Raito nods. "Good enough for now. By the way, name's Raito."

"I'm home!" Raito calls out. "Ah, good. I've been meaning to talk with you. I just can't decide on dinner..." Takeru says, entering the hallway. "If you have any ideas, I'd like to-" Takeru stops talking upon seeing Huckmon. "...Log entry needed..." he mutters. "...Wha- How?! When?! Who- Why do you have a digital lifeform with you?!" Takeru sputters. "I... kinda found him?" Raito answers. "Great... Just great... You have a lifeform made out of data, a literal impossibility, mind you, with you... This is gonna be hard to explain to Shigeru..." Huckmon walks up to Takeru. "Excuse me, but you are the father of Raito, correct? May I stay with you and them until I find a way to return back to my own world?" he asks. Takeru lets out a sigh. His studies have not prepared him for this. "Yeah, yeah. Whatever. I just- I need to figure out how to file this report to my coworkers... ...A digital lifeform... In the data... Hoo boy..." Takeru mutters, clutching his head. "Coworkers? ...You mentioned how I am a "digital lifeform". An astute observation, I am impressed. Do you wish to learn about me and my fellow Digimon?" Huckmon asks. "If I- Of course!" The enthusiasm catches Huckmon off guard. "Ah, I apologise. I tend to get... overinvested in many things. I appreciate your offer. ...Uhm... Is there anything you need? Specific food? Any preferred thing to sleep on?" Takeru asks, composing himself. "I do not believe so, however your caution is appreciated. I will let you know if there is any accomodation I need, within reason, of course."
