Chapter Text
Period 1
“This is where it was, right Yukkie?” Ruka Kayamori was looking through the trees.
The silver-haired girl fixed her glasses as she looked at her MePad. “Almost. The odd Cancer sightings aren’t too far from here. Just a bit more of a hike into the mountains.”
A short, pink-haired girl was wheezing as she walked up. “Gyah... No more walking...”
“We’ve done longer walks before.” A taller pink-haired girl walked up, arms crossed.
“No... I concur with her...” A blonde girl walked up, groaning.
“Same...” A black-haired girl with an orange hoodie grumbled.
“Seriously, you two?” Yuki sighed. “If this is what gets to you, I fear for our squadron’s future...”
“Can’t you two just... switch?” Ruka asked. “Like, have Tsukasa go Awakened and have Karrie take over.”
“I think the other me would switch back instantly if I were to use her for something like that.” Tsukasa said.
“Karrie said that I should build up more leg muscles.” Karen added.
“No way, no way!” Ruka complained. “If that’s the case, then you gotta do push-ups too to keep the balance!”
“That’s what you’re concerned about?” Yuki would never get used to the antics of 31-A’s leader.
She tuned out the complaining from the others as they continued the tall trek up the hill. Going past several trees, they had arrived near the top.
“Hey, there’s somethin’ there.” Megumi pointed forward.
Built into the side of the mountain was what appeared to be a set of ancient ruins. The pillars were covered in moss, and crumbling. They would’ve run forward, if not for a large furry animal slumbering nearby.
“A bear?” Tsukasa said.
“Finally, something to kill!” Karrie had already taken over. “Let’s-!”
“Sneak around it.” Yuki said. “It’s sleeping.”
Karrie grumbled before switching back to Karen. The six quickly teleported past, forgoing the risk with stealth. Past the bear, they started observing the ruins. The interior had a few windows and cracks in the ceiling, but seemed sturdy enough.
“Damn, this place is pretty old.” Megumi tapped one of the pillars. “I wonder what it was for?”
“Odd. These ruins seem to be of those you’d find from ancient Greek or Roman dig sites, except it wouldn’t make sense for them to be in Japan.” Tsukasa put a hand under her chin.
“Wow, you actually said something insightful.” Yuki noted.
“H-Hey...” Tsukasa pouted.
“I found something!” Tama said. “Over here!”
They went to closer to the foot of the mountain, seeing what appeared to be a large stone coffin.
“A coffin?” Ruka said.
“Maybe there’s a mummy in there.” Karen suggested.
“Bzzt, wrong.” Yuki said. “Why would something out of Ancient Egypt be in Japan?”
“What if it’s treasure?” Karen said. “Being rich would be nice.”
“Wait, could we even sell it for GP?” Yuki wondered.
“So Megumin thinks it’s a mummy and Karen thinks it’s treasure. “Ruka put a hand on the lid. “Well, only one way to find out who’s right!”
“H-Hey, hold it!” Megumi said. “Ain’t you worried about unleashing an evil spirit or something?!”
Ruka shrugged. “Eh, I’ll just have Kozue take care of it if I get possessed or something. Alley-oop!”
She pushed off the cover, kicking up a lot of dust as a result. Looking in, there wasn’t a decomposing corpse, nor a pile of gold. Instead, some odd dusty relic that barely resembled some kind of instrument. It was green with odd red spikes all over.
“Whoa! Ancient instrument!” Ruka picked it up, raising it over her head. “Da da da daaaa!”
“I can’t tell what it’s supposed to be.” Yuki said. “I guess it kind of looks like a french horn?”
“I thought it looked like a trumpet!” Tama said.
“How much do you think it’s worth?” Tsukasa asked.
Megumi was deep in thought. “Hmm... I want to say an ancient thing like this is worth two thousand and seven yen.”
“Since when were you the expert?” Yuki asked. “Your sense of value is really off.”
“You think it’ll toot?” Ruka asked, looking at the mouthpiece.
“Do not toot it!” Yuki shouted. “Are you trying to die of infection with how old that thing probably is?!”
Before Ruka could decide whether to toot it or not, they all heard the bear roar.
“Crap, looks like it’s awake!” Megumi realized.
“Well, we should just leave.” Ruka said. “We don’t want to hurt the bear-”
They heard a loud crash from the outside. One that clearly wasn’t from the bear. Ruka quickly dropped the horn and glanced at her team. Quickly nodding at one another, Squad 31-A ran outside. Though the horn they left behind started to glow...
Running out of the ruins, they saw the bear standing and roaring. Though the bear had its back to them. It was facing down...
“Whoa! Those Cancer are bright and flashy!” Tama said.
“Wait, those Cancer seem weird.” Yuki narrowed her eyes. “The shapes seem to follow the trend, but... they shouldn’t be this brightly colored.”
“They’re glowing too. Why are they glowing?” Tsukasa asked.
The bear charged and swiped at one of the odd creatures. But to 31-A’s utter shock, mere contact with the monster caused the bear’s arm to disintegrate. Another monster slammed into it, turning into dust alongside the bear, killing it on the spot.
“D-Did you just see THAT?!” Tama shouted.
“T-The bear turned into dust with the Cancer...” Tsukasa trembled.
“What the hell, when did the Cancer get this busted?!” Ruka yelled.
“Hello world!” Not taking any chances, Yuki called for her Seraph, taking aim and firing at a few of the monsters. Thankfully, her blasts managed to take a few down. “Looks like we can kill them the same way, but these ones don’t have barriers.”
“Good call, Yukkie!” Ruka nodded. “Let’s go, everyone! Just in case, don’t let these things touch you when we take them down!”
“Roger!”
“My legend begins now!”
“Yer Savior has arrived!
“There exists more than one truth!”
“Reaping your last breath!”
“Unsinkable!”
All of the girls summoned their Seraphs and prepared to charge, but before they could even attack, a battlecry was heard ringing in the air. “Hwooooooooaaaah!”
Slammed into the ground and pulverizing one of the creatures was a girl dressed in orange armor. A white scarf fluttered behind her.
“Whoa, what the heck?” Ruka stepped back.
As the dust faded, the girl looked back and they saw her features. She had light brown hair and orange eyes. With a smile, the girl gave them a thumbs-up. “Don’t worry, it’ll be okay!”
“Eh?” Ruka raised a brow.
Landing by the new girl were five more, each garbed in a similar armor of a different color.
“So it was true.” The blue-haired, blue-armored girl said, gripping a katana. “The Noise have arrived in this world.”
“What the hell, I thought we took care of them!” A white-haired girl in red armor grumbled.
“It seems that a few made it out even though we destroyed the Treasury of Babylonia.” A pink-haired woman in silver armor frowned. “Or perhaps we were unable to destroy it.”
“Maybe a few got out, dess!” A blonde-haired girl in green armor said. “Maybe the big explosion sent them here, dess!”
“Then we need to take care of them.” A black-haired girl in pink armor noted. “And we need to keep those girls safe too.”
“O-Oi! We can take care of ourselves!” Megumi shouted.
“They do have weapons, but they’re at risk at being carbonized.” The blue-haired girl noted. “Tachibana, would you mind staying behind and keeping them defended? The rest of us will handle the Noise.”
“You got it!” The first girl jumped back, as her allies went forward and engaged the Noise, whittling down their numbers. Landing in front of Squad 31-A, the girl introduced herself. “Hi there! I’m Hibiki Tachibana, age 17! My birthday is September 13th, and my blood type is O!
“Wh-Why are you-?” Yuki was incredibly confused.
“According to my latest checkup, I'm 158 cm tall! As for my weight... I'll tell you when we're better friends! My hobby is helping others, and I love rice and more rice! Also, I've never been in a relationship for my entire life until a few months ago!”
“Uh... hi?” Megumi waved back.
“Well if that’s the case, I’m Ruka Kayamori, age uh... I’m not sure! My birthday is June 24th, and my blood type is uh... I’m also not sure! And according to my latest checkup, I’m 159 cm tall. As for my weight uh... I’ll also tell you when we’re better friends! My hobby is also helping others, and I love to rock like GYAYAGRAYYYY BODODODODUOH! And as for me, I’ve never been in a relationship for my entire life!”
“YOU’RE ALREADY ON THE SAME WAVELENGTH?!” Yuki screamed.
“What? It’d be rude if we didn’t introduce ourselves back.” Ruka said with a shrug. “Oh, we should do the same with her friends and... hold on, are they singing?!”
(Insert Rikka Ryōran by Aoi Yūki, Nana Mizuki, Ayahi Takagaki, Yōko Hikasa, Yoshino Nanjō and Ai Kayano)
Team 31-A turned back to Hibiki’s friends, hearing a tune play as they fought the monsters. Despite multitasking with both singing and fighting, they were handling the monsters with complete ease.
The blue-haired girl raised her sword, as it extended in size from a katana to a massive broadsword. It glew brightly, before she swung it forward, launching several beams of blue electricity.
Blue Flash
The electrified blade beams slammed into the Noise, slicing through them.
“You guys saw that, right?” Ruka asked.
“The weird scroll thing that showed up when the blue-haired chick swung her sword, right?” Megumi asked. “Or how she just punked me with how big she made her sword?”
Several noise were sniped by the girl in the red armor, as she fired red crossbow bolts all around her. She swapped the crossbows for a pair of gatling guns, mowing them down. A set of missile launchers opened on her legs, blasting all the Noise around her.
MEGA DETH PARTY
“What in the world?! How many firearms does that girl have?!” Yuki shouted.
The pink-haired girl swung a dagger forward, only for it to extend into a whip-sword. It wrapped up the last few Noise.
EMPRESS†REBELLION
“How long is that sword-knife-whip thing?” Tsukasa asked, amazed.
“Kirika! Shirabe!” The pink-haired girl called.
The girls in green and pink armor ran forward. The blonde girl slashed with a scythe, while the black-haired girl spun, her skirt turning into a buzzsaw. Once they had cleared up the area, the blonde girl shot several wires towards the black-haired girl, as she made a scythe blade under her feet. The black-haired girl moved the buzzsaw so it was like a large wheel, as the two prepared to launch straight into the last group of Noise from each side.
Forbidden Wheel of Evil: ZABABA Eclipse
“Gyah! A guillotine!” Tama shouted.
“Kyah ha ha! It’s like an execution!” Karrie laughed.
The two launched, slashing through the last of the Noise. With a final burst of carbon, every Noise had been defeated.
“That appears to be the last of them.” The pink-haired girl said.
With flashes of light, their armor disappeared. All six of the girls were now wearing dark blue uniforms. Hibiki ran over to join her friends.
“Whoa, they’re good. And coordinated.” Ruka said, impressed.
“But who are they?” Karen asked.
“That’s a really good question...” Tsukasa said. “And one I don’t have an answer for.”
“I don’t think anybody would have an answer.” Yuki pointed out.
The six girls walked over to Squad 31-A, who had dismissed their weapons. The blue-haired girl was the first to step up. “Apologies if we surprised you.”
“N-No, not at all.” Ruka said. “So, who are you guys exactly? Your buddy Hibiki here gave a full introduction, but we’re still in the dark about the rest of you.”
“Ah, I suppose that’s fair. My name is Tsubasa Kazanari.” Tsubasa briefly bowed.
“Chris Yukine.” The white-haired girl said.
“I’m Maria Cadenzavna Eve.” The pink-haired woman said.
“I’m Kirika Akatsuki, dess!” The blonde girl grinned.
“Shirabe Tsukuyomi.” The black-haired girl finished.
“Okay okay, nice to meet you all.” Ruka said. “Now do you mind explaining the... basically the everything else that just happened?”
“Would it be possible if you could take us to whoever your leader us?” Maria asked.
“Hey, we’re not aliens.” Megumi scoffed.
“Well technically you are to us since we’re from a different world, dess!” Kirika said.
Squad 31-A blinked. “Huh?”
“Oh that’s right!” Hibiki remembered. “We’d better go grab Gjallarhorn!”
“Gjallarhorn? That ancient horn from myths of Norse?” Tsukasa clarified.
“Yeah, that’s how we got here!” Hibiki said. “We’d better go get it!”
“People from another world...” Yuki said, watching Hibiki go back to the ruins.
“Yeah, it’s weird the first time around.” Chris chuckled. “We got used to it after a while.”
Period 2
Squad 31-A had returned back to base with their new companions in tow. The six new girls were receiving a few odd looks from the other Seraph Squadron members here and there.
“Is this what fame feels like?” Shirabe asked Tsubasa and Maria.
“Sometimes, but not all the time.” Tsubasa said.
“Fame?” Ruka asked.
“We’ll tell you later.” Maria said. “But what is this place, exactly?”
“This is the base for the Seraph Squadrons.” Yuki explained. “The last bastion of hope for humanity against the Cancer.”
“Geez, that disease haunts everybody, dess.” Kirika shivered.
“No, not that kind of cancer.” Karen explained. “The Cancer are aliens that arrived from outer space and attacked humanity. The devastation was horrible.”
“An alien invasion?” Chris asked.
“Yes.” Tsukasa nodded. “That clock tower has a counter shows how many humans are left on Earth.”
Looking up, the girls were stunned to see how low the number was.
“That low...?” Shirabe murmured. “Not even 10 million?”
“How many in your world with how you fought those alien thingies?” Ruka asked.
“Our world never experienced death on such a wide scale.” Maria said. “Our population is nearing 10 billion.”
“Well, whatever you guys are doing is the right thing.” Ruka sadly noted.
Hibiki frowned, but noticed something bouncing by her leg. Looking down, she saw black squishy blob looking up at her.
“Oh hi there!” Hibiki picked the blob up. “Who’s this little fella?”
“I noticed a lot of them around the base.” Tsubasa noted. “What are they?”
“These little guys are Narbies.” Ruka said, patting the one in Hibiki’s arms. “They’re also aliens, but they’re harmless little friendly blobs.”
“Nice to meet you, Narby!” Hibiki smiled, before putting it down and letting it bounce off.
Ruka smiled. Yup. Narbies always cheer us up with how huggable they are.
They walked into one of the buildings, and Ruka led them to an office.
“Hey, Commander Tezuka!” Ruka said with a wide grin. “Squad 31-A reporting back!”
“And can you explain who these other girls are?” Tezuka asked, standing up from her desk.
Tsubasa glanced at Maria, who nodded and decided to be the one to speak for the group. “My name is Maria Cadenzavna Eve, and these are my companions. Hibiki Tachibana, Tsubasa Kazanari, Chris Yukine, Shirabe Tsukuyomi and Kirika Akatsuki.”
“Can you explain why you are here?” Tezuka asked.
“Well, it’s a bit of a story. The thing is, we’ve come from another world.” Maria said.
Squad 31-A expected the commander to react, but she surprisingly stayed composed. “This is quite the outlandish claim.”
“She sounds like Tomosato, dess...” Kirika murmured to Shirabe, who nodded.
“Nah, we can kinda back it up.” Ruka said. “They actually fought and beat those weird Cancer that were reported.”
“Though that’s mostly because they weren’t actually Cancer.” Yuki said. “They mentioned that their monsters from their world called Noise?”
Tezuka looked back at the girls. “Very well then. If Squad 31-A can say such things, I’ll listen further.”
“Thank you.” Maria smiled. “Our world is... far less devastated than this one, according Ruka explained to us.”
“Oh hell yeah, first name basis already.” Ruka grinned, as Yuki hit her shoulder.
“In our world, there are many different threats, but one of the first was the Noise. Alien creatures that kill with a single touch. Upon contact with a living organism, both the Noise and the victim will turn into carbon.” Maria explained.
“So that was the creepy thing that killed the bear!” Tama realized.
“However, humanity did have a weapon.” Maria held up the red pendant around her neck. “The Symphogear. Fragments of ancient relics that we can harness for our own use.”
“Are you able to demonstrate?” Tezuka asked.
Nodding, Maria gently grasped her pendant. “Seilien coffin Airgetlám tron~”
With a flash of light, Maria had donned the silver armor she had before. Once more, Squad 31-A looked towards the commander, who didn’t seem to react.
“This armor enhances our physical abilities significantly, allowing us to create weapons to fight.” Maria held up her knife, as it extended into a longer weapon and shrunk again. “We use Phonic Gain, the power of songs, to empower ourselves.”
“This is proof enough, since nothing like this exists in our world.” Tezuka said, as Maria dismissed her transformation. “You may continue.”
“My companions and I are part of the organization SONG, which stands for Special Disaster Response Team. We assist in disasters and threats that normal humans cannot overcome.” Maria said. “We had once believed to have permanently ended the Noise threat. Several years afterwards had led us to find the relic known as Gjallarhorn, which connects our world to others.”
Hibiki held up the large horn that Ruka had considered tooting earlier.
“We’ve used it to visit other worlds time and time again, sometimes assisting the residents if our paths crossed.” Maria said. “Relics appear quite frequently, and trouble tends to follow them.”
“That’s a portal to other worlds?” Ruka asked. “Does this mean that I can find a world where everyone’s a rock star?”
“Is that all you can think about?” Yuki asked.
“Well I was also gonna consider a world where everyone is nak-”
“Only people with Symphogears can use it to go between worlds.” Chris cut her off.
“Boo boo.” Ruka pouted.
“Returning to my explanation, our sensors picked up Noise in this world that had similar signatures to the ones we once faced.” Maria said. “We were sent here to investigate the matter, bringing us here.”
“So you’re here to lend your assistance, and I’m to understand that it’s temporary?” Tezuka asked.
“Yes. Once we find and defeat the remaining Noise in this world, we will return home.” Maria said. “We don’t want to influence this world more than we have to. This is simply us cleaning up our own mess.”
“Very well.” Tezuka nodded. “We do have a vacant room next to Squad 31-A’s room. You may use that as a temporary form of residence.”
“We appreciate the cooperation, Commander Tezuka.” Maria held out a hand.
A rare smile appeared on the Commander’s face. “We’re both adults here. You may call me Saki.”
“The Commander is smiling and she’s on first name basis with Maria! Ruka is shook!” Ruka shouted.
“Is it really that surprising?” Shirabe asked. “I guess she does seem a bit of the serious type.”
“You act like that too, Shirabe, dess!” Kirika pointed out.
“Do you have anywhere to put this?” Hibiki asked, holding up Gjallarhorn. “It’s kind of our ticket home, so...”
“I’ll have it placed in high security in the laboratory.” Tezuka said. “They’ll monitor it constantly and provide any updates if something happens.”
“Higumin’s gonna have a lot of fun.” Ruka chuckled, as Hibiki put it down on the office couch.
“With that, you may be dismissed. Squad 31-A will act as your guides for the duration of your stay.” Tezuka said. “Oh, and those Symphogears of yours, avoid using it on the base outside of the training arena. We have a similar rule to avoid summoning Seraphs.”
“That we can promise.” Maria said.
“No no, you gotta transform on base some time!” Ruka said. “It’ll be so cool when you do that magical girl transforming thing, and sing too!”
“Absolutely not.” Tezuka said.
“Come on, maybe I can transform with them and we can start up a super magical duet!” Ruka added.
“Absolutely not.” Tezuka repeated.
“In that case, what if we put the Commander in one of those super tight magical girl cosplay outfits and-”
“ARE YOU A DUM-DUM?!” Tezuka suddenly shouted, causing the SONG members to jump. She fixed her hat quickly and went back into her usual demeanor. “Apologies you had to see that.”
“I-It’s no issue.” Maria assured her.
“Well, it’s almost lunchtime, so we can talk more in the cafeteria.” Ruka said. “The six of us haven’t properly introduced ourselves yet, anyways.”
Hibiki’s stomach growled and she nervously laughed. “Sounds like a great idea!”
Lunch
Arriving at the cafeteria, an enriching smell was in the air. One that many of the girls recognized.
“Okonomiyaki?” Megumi said. “Hell yeah, the classic!”
“It’s just like Flower back home!” Hibiki had stars in her eyes.
“Yay! I’m so hungry, dess!” Kirika cheered.
“Alright! Time to go all out!” Ruka whooped.
“What are you, kids?” Yuki and Chris said at the same time.
The two stared at the other briefly, before making a nod of approval.
“See, Yuki? You can also get on someone else’s wavelength.” Ruka chuckled.
As the two teams ate, Ruka took the time between bites to explain their world to the SONG agents, as well as introduce Squad 31-A properly.
“Okay, so you explained the alien invasion thing. And that the surviving parts of humanity are living in domes around the world.” Chris said. “On top of that, you guys fight the Cancer using those barriers and Seraphs?”
“And you call them out via a cool chant.” Kirika noted. “That’s just like a Symphogear, dess!”
“If only we had magical girl transformations too.” Ruka mused.
“Magical girl?” Tsukasa repeated. “I thought it was more like tokusatsu.”
“Yer both crazy. Clearly it’s more of a mecha transformation.” Megumi said.
“They’re not giant robots, Megumin.” Ruka pointed out.
“I don’t see them in frilly magical girl outfits, do you?” Megumi asked.
“Then it’s clearly a tokusatsu transformation!” Tsukasa argued.
“I didn’t see no unnecessary and unexplained explosion go off behind them after transforming.” Ruka said. “Actually, that’d be really rad if it happened for us after summoning our Seraphs.”
“Ignore them.” Yuki sighed. “What about you all? You mentioned that you fought more than those Noise?”
“That would be an understatement.” Shirabe said.
For the longest time, 31-A were under the impression that the strongest Cancer in their world were at the top of the food chain. That their ultimate goal was to become strong enough to take them down.
This was before the SONG agents revealed they had fought terrorists, alchemists, ancient monsters, and even beings that were considered the Gods of their world. Stopping things like the Moon falling or even the Earth being destroyed, a significant jump compared to the Seraph Squadron’s accomplishments.
“So you guys are basically superheroes?!” Tama shouted.
“That’s nuts...” Karen was amazed.
“...seriously though, why do your Gods sound so lame?” Ruka asked.
“What do you mean?” Tsubasa asked.
“They call themselves “Custodians”?” Ruka raised a brow. “Like janitors?”
The SONG agents blinked a few times, realization washing over them.
“Huh, I guess she’s right...” Hibiki said.
“Congrats, Ruka. You just said something sacrilegious to an entire pantheon of divinity.” Yuki sighed.
“From what they’re telling us, these Janitors were real jerks.” Ruka said. “That and they got more than one pantheon since they mentioned a lot more than just the Janitors.”
“Custodians! They’re Custodians!” Yuki shouted.
“Tomato, tomato.” Ruka shrugged.
“You do realize that people reading the fanfic won’t realize that you pronounced it differently, right?” Yuki asked.
“Oh shoot, right.” Ruka realized before raising her hands to her face and sticking out her tongue. “Whoopsie-gravy!”
“STOP THAAAAAT!” Yuki yelled.
“Wh-What’s wrong with what she said?” Hibiki asked, confused.
“This is their bit.” Megumi explained. “For some reason, Yuki really hates it whenever Ruka says that.”
“I think the expression is funny!” Kirika raised a hand. “Whoopsie-gravy, dess!”
“AAAAAAAAAH! IT’S SPREADING TO OTHER WORLDS NOW!” Yuki screamed.
“To think my legend would reach inhabitants of another world, and one would put their own spin at the end!” Ruka was incredibly proud of herself.
“Whoopsie-gravy... yeah, it’s fun to say!” Hibiki agreed.
“NOOOOOOOOOO!” Yuki screamed.
“Whoopsie-gravy.” Shirabe said.
“IT’S OVEEEEEER! WE DOOMED ANOTHER WORLD!!” Yuki’s voice was reaching new octaves.
“Calm down, Yukkie.” Ruka said. “It’s not that bad.”
“IT IS THAT BAD! I’M SERIOUSLY GOING TO DIE!” Yuki ran her fingers through her hair.
“Well, while Yuki calms down, I was thinking we could split off into duos, one from each team. That way we can each give the SONG girls a tour of the place.” Ruka said.
“A wise idea.” Tsubasa noted. “I can see why you’re the leader.”
Even after all that insane crap? Chris sweatdropped.
“I was thinking you and I can be paired off.” Ruka said, holding up her fingers. “Then Bikki and Megumin, Chrissey and Yukkie, Maria and Tsukassie, Kiri and Cappy, and Shira and Karerin.”
“You already gave us all nicknames?” Hibiki said, amazed.
“That’s also kind of her thing.” Megumi said.
“Wait, how are you aware of Tachibana and Akatsuki’s nicknames prior to-” Tsubasa started to ask.
“I don’t like that one.” Chris interrupted. “Can I get another?”
“Is Chris-chan okay?” Ruka asked.
“Chrissey is fine.” Chris grumbled, as Hibiki giggled behind her hand.
“Wait, why don’t I get a nickname?” Maria asked.
“We already got both a Mari and a Maria on base, so I kinda got to stick with your normal name until then.” Ruka explained. “Plus, it’ feels a bit disrespectful since you’re older than us.”
“So now you’re worried about being respectful after that scene in the commander’s office?” Yuki sighed.
“But if you really want a nickname, does... Mari-Mari work?” Ruka asked.
Maria chuckled. “If you insist with it.”
“Alright then!” Ruka stood up. “C’mon, Basa! Let me show you around!”
Tsubasa slightly hesitated at the nickname, but softly smiled. “Very well. I’ll take up your offer.”
Period 3
Ruka guided Tsubasa around the base, pointing out all the major highlights, as well as stopping by and saying hello to her fellow Seraph Squad members. Tsubasa was a good listener, and paid close attention to everything Ruka was saying. Ruka kinda found it a bit weird since Tsubasa looked and acted older than her. She was usually used to helping guide around people that didn’t know their way.
“And here we end the tour with Narby Square.” Ruka said. “It’s the best place to chill in the entire base. Any questions?”
“None at all.” Tsubasa said, as several Narbies bounced around. “I think it’s quite admirable that your organization is working towards defending Earth in spite of how much has already been lost.”
“Well, a world free from the Cancer is kind of like the shared dream of everyone in the Seraph Squadron.” Ruka said. “We’re all working towards that goal.”
Tsubasa smiled. “I think that’s a goal you’ll be able to reach, Kayamori.”
“Jeez, you’re making me blush here!” Ruka laughed. “Also, you don’t need to use my last name if we’re buds.”
“Apologies, but that’s what I prefer.” Tsubasa said.
“But I heard you call Mari-Mari by her first name.” Ruka remembered from their conversations earlier.
“That’s... a different situation.” Tsubasa said, face turning slightly red.
“Oh you’re blushing now.” Ruka observed, as she put the pieces together. “Wait, are you and Mari-Mari like, a thing?”
“I’m... not sure what that means exactly, but if you’re implying we’re a couple, yes we are.” Tsubasa said.
“Whoa! Ruka is shook!” Ruka said. “And with an older girl? That’s impressive!”
“Well, our relationship didn’t actually start off the best.” Tsubasa admitted. “We were actually enemies at first.”
“A magical girl and dark magical girl scenario?” Ruka asked. “That’s pretty rad.”
“I wouldn’t personally describe it like that.” Tsubasa said.
Before she could elaborate further, two girls walked up. Both were on the younger side, one with long silver pigtails and the other with a black ponytail. Tsubasa noticed that they both carried swords on them.
“Yo Hisame-chi, Inorin.” Ruka greeted. “What’s up?”
“Kayamori.” The silver-haired girl said. “May we ask who this new girl is?”
“Oh, she’s guest here.” Ruka said.
“My name is Tsubasa Kazanari.” Tsubasa said. “And you two are?”
“I’m Hisame Ogasahara.” The silver-haired girl said. “And this here is my pupil, Inori Natsume.”
The black-haired girl didn’t speak, but simply nodded.
“Tsubasa Kazanari... I sense wells of experience from you.” Hisame said. “Are you a practitioner of the blade?”
Tsubasa was impressed. “Though I do not carry one on me, you were able to deduce my skill from a simple glance?”
“Heh heh, I’m not a genius swordsman for nothing.” Hisame chuckled. “Would you do me the honor of a duel? My pupil is carrying a spare blade.”
Inori held up another blade, but she looked a bit conflicted.
“Let me guess Inorin, you want to fight her too?” Ruka asked.
Though Inori did not speak, Ruka could tell she wanted to test herself against Tsubasa as well.
“Yup. Gotcha.” Ruka nodded. “Hisame-chi, Inorin wants to duel against Tsubasa too.”
“I see. It’s only natural for my pupil to desire a challenge.” Hisame said. “But what to do...”
“If you wish, I’m more than willing to take you both on.” Tsubasa said.
This caused the others to all look at her in surprise. Hisame was the one to speak. “You wish to take on both a master swordsman and her pupil at the same time?”
“I have experience fighting multiple opponents.” Tsubasa said. “And I’m sure that you two would benefit from a team duel.”
“An interesting proposal.” Hisame admitted. “Though I was hoping Kayamori would analyze our duel and give feedback. This might not be as feasible if she has to keep an eye on both my pupil and I at the same time.”
“No worries, I got an easy solution walking over.” Ruka said, holding up a hand. “Hey, Mona-nyan!”
A muscular pink-haired girl walked over. “What is it, Kayamori?”
“Perfect timing. You mind watching Hisame-chi while I watch Inorin? They’re about to duel my new pal Tsubasa. Tsubasa, this is Hisame-chi’s squad-mate, Mona-nyan.”
“I should assume that’s Ruka’s nickname for you and not your actual name?” Tsubasa asked.
“Yes, my actual name is Monaka Tsukishiro.” She sad. “So Ogasahara and Natsume are both duelling you?”
“Yes.” Tsubasa nodded, catching the spare blade Inori tossed.
“You seem quite confidant in your skills.” Monaka observed.
“It’s quite interesting indeed.” Hisame agreed, drawing her blade. “It gets my swordsman blood boiling.”
Wordlessly agreeing, Inori drew out her own blade. Tsubasa drew the spare katana, placing the sheath to the side.
“I think a max limit of three minutes is fine, right?” Hisame asked. “Non-lethal strikes, and a near-direct attack is good enough for a win.”
“I can work under those conditions.” Tsubasa agreed. Inori nodded as well.
“Count us down.” Hisame said.
Monaka held up a hand. “Three... two... one... fight!”
Tsubasa widened her eyes as Hisame took a single step forward and disappeared. She felt the fighting spirit behind, and quickly brought the blade behind her to block Hisame’s strike. Inori tried striking from the front, but Tsubasa quickly pushed back Hisame before slashing outwards to intercept Inori. The two Seraph swordswomen made graceful strikes, but Tsubasa weaved between the blades, almost like a dance. All three swordswomen closed their eyes, relying only on their instincts.
The second the all opened, they disappeared in bursts of speed. All that could be seen on the battlefield were sparks, accompanied by the sound of blades clashing.
“I can barely record this with my eyes!” Ruka shouted. “You getting this all, Mona-nyan?!”
“I am.” Monaka’s eyes were wide as she observed the duel. “Ogasahara and Natsume’s moves are almost like blots out of the darkness, bursting out from still movements. In contrast, Kazanari’s movements are like bolts of lightning; a sharp movement in an instant with devastating power. I’m not sure who has the upper hand in this duel.”
The sound of blades started to slow, as it was clear the combatants were tiring. At the two minute and thirty second mark exactly, the blur cleared as the swordswomen came back into view. Inori and Hisame both had their blades aimed at Tsubasa’s chest. But Tsubasa was holding her sword at just the right angle that a single slash would cut through both of their necks.
“This duel is over.” Monaka said. “It’s a draw.”
All three got out of their positions, sheathing their blades.
“Excellent... I saw no openings at all.” Hisame noted.
“I can say the same for both of you. Ogasahara, your skill is incredible, and I can see how much you’ve taught Natsume” Tsubasa complimented.
“Kukuku... only natural that... a master swordsman like myself could accomplish...” A small burst of blood dripped from Hisame’s mouth as she fell to her knees.
“What?!” Tsubasa took a step back. “I never hit you!”
“No... this is a consequence of my own ability...” Hisame winced. “I can only fight at maximum skill for three minutes... It strains my body...”
“Then why would you-?” Tsubasa started.
“She’s fine.” Monaka said as she walked over. “Don’t scare her, Ogasahara.”
“Yeah, this is her bit.” Ruka added, watching Inori “help” Hisame to her feet. “She just bites her lip to make herself look cooler.”
“Why would you-?” Tsubasa started.
“I am impressed at your skill, Tsubasa Kazanari!” Hisame admitted, abruptly changing the subject. “You truly are a swordsmaster of true character.”
Inori nodded, speaking for the first time. “Thank you for this opportunity.”
Tsubasa smiled. “It was an honor for me to duel you as well. You are both incredibly skilled, working in-tandem to put me on the back foot.”
“Indeed they are.” Monaka nodded. “I’ve fought alongside Ogasahara for a long time, and the skills she passed down to Natsume are showing strong as well.”
“It’s really impressive even though Hisame-chi’s Seraph is a gun.” Ruka added.
“You did NOT need to bring that up, Kayamori!” Hisame snapped.
Tsubasa blinked. “You’re a master swordsman, yet your primary weapon against the Cancer is a firearm?”
“But mine is a GUN! Isn’t that hilarious?! HAHAHAHA!” Hisame cackled insanely.
Inori didn’t speak, but Tsubasa could read from her expression that this was a huge sore point for her mentor.
I should introduce Yukine to her later. Tsubasa thought.
“Though I should ask, Kazanari.” Monaka said. “The way you fight... the style feels almost free, yet some moves feel... incomplete.”
“I normally fight alongside my own team.” Tsubasa admitted.
“It’s not that.” Monaka said. “Some of your moves are clearly one meant to work in-tandem with a partner.”
“Well, she does have a partner.” Ruka chimed in. “I met her today too.”
“I see.” Monaka nodded. “Then treasure your partner well, Tsubasa Kazanari.”
Hisame nodded in agreement, as did Inori.
“I plan on it.” Tsubasa said.
Saying their farewells, the other Seraph Squadron members went their ways.
“Yup. Basically everyone on the base is my pal.” Ruka nodded.
“Your earnest personalty is infectious.” Tsubasa chuckled. “It reminds me a lot of Tachibana.”
“Please, praise me more!” Ruka chuckled. “Anyways, you worked up quite a sweat. Mind if I treat you to a coffee or something?”
“I wouldn’t want to overstep my welcome.” Tsubasa said.
“Eh, don’t worry about it. I got plenty of GP here while you’re kinda broke.” Ruka pointed out.
“That... is a valid observation.” Tsubasa sighed. “I suppose I will have to go with you.”
“Yippie!” Ruka whooped, as Tsubasa chuckled. Ruka’s affable nature really was quite uplifting. She understood exactly why Ruka was the leader of her squad in spite of her perks.
Chris was sitting on a bench with Yuki. The girl with glasses was typing on her mePad.
“So you spend your time sitting on this bench just doing that stuff?” Chris asked, looking at all the data Yuki was sorting through.
“It’s my role in my squad.” Yuki said. “I do this to make sure that we all make it back from the battlefield alive.”
“Jeez, you’re pretty well-geared to do that.” Chris noted.
“Honestly, I’m glad that someone levelheaded is here to hear me talk.” Yuki admitted. “If one of my squadmates were here, they’d probably drive me nuts.”
“Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from.” Chris nodded. “The others like messing with me and being annoying. Especially that dummy.”
Yuki also nodded. “Like Hibiki is to you, Ruka drives me insane.”
“And at the same time, they’re all irreplaceable and like family, right?” Chris asked.
“Yes! Exactly like that! You get it entirely!” Yuki smiled. “Finally, someone that understands my pain!”
“Need a shoulder to vent on? I’m your girl.” Chris chuckled.
“Well, that’s a difference between us.” Yuki noted. “I’m usually the one venting to others.”
“Okay, enough of us complaining about our friends.” Chris said. “What else do you do? Like, what’s your whole deal?”
“Well, prior to the Seraph Squadron, I was part of Orchid.” Yuki explained. “We were the elite of the elite when it came to hacking.”
“What, like cyber terrorists?” Chris asked.
“The opposite, actually.” Yuki clarified. “We were responsible for stopping cyber crime all around the globe. I don’t mean to brag or anything, but we prevented World War Three from breaking out.”
“No shot, for real?” Chris blinked. “That’s pretty badass.”
“It’s one of the things I take pride in.” Yuki admitted. “That, and something else.”
“There’s more?” Chris asked.
“Yes. Let me introduce you to... this artificial intelligence.” Yuki said, pulling out her mePad. “I programmed this on a whim and it’s grown on its own. Just... don’t laugh, okay?”
“Weird request, but sure.” Chris said.
“...ASS, please introduce yourself.” Yuki grumbled.
“I am ASS. It is nice to meet you.” The voice on the mePad greeted.
...
...
...
“Snrk!” Chris stifled a laugh.
“AHHHHHHHHHH! I KNEW YOU’D REACT LIKE THAT!” Yuki screamed.
“S-Sorry, sorry!” Chris hit her chest to stop herself from laughing further. “It just slipped out! But why did you name it-?”
“I DIDN’T! RUKA DID THIS TO MESS WITH MEEEE!!” Yuki yelled.
“Yeah, that sounds like her from how much I’ve seen.” Chris coughed, getting all the chuckles out.
With Yuki having calmed down, she turned back to Chris. “But yeah, that’s mostly what it’s been with for me.”
“Well, thanks for showing me your ASS-” Chris stumbled on her words, blushing. “Wow it just got worse.”
Having mostly screamed herself exhausted, Yuki merely nodded. “At least it responds well. Ruka keeps joking about it being our child.”
“Let’s quit it with talking about ASS-” Chris winced. “Move this in a different direction.”
“Fine by me.” Yuki said. “Is it fine if we talk about you, then?”
“Eh... I’m not so sure if I’m ready to open up yet.” Chris admitted.
“Then why would you-?”
“Yo, Izumi.” A blonde girl with a large coat walked up. At her side was a shorter girl with pale hair.
“The assassin sisters?” Yuki said. “What brings you here?”
“Seika’s going nuts, nya.” The shorter girl sighed. “She got a new thing and she’s been all over it. We were wondering if you knew what it was all about, nya.”
“Oh, that... that’s from one of our new guests.” Yuki explained.
“The shorty here, huh?” The blonde girl asked, looking at Chris.
“Shorty...?” Chris’ eye twitched.
“Um, these two are from Squad 31-B.” Yuki introduced. “Ichigo and Sumomo Minase.”
“All the squad leaders got info about a few new faces that were temporarily gonna be on base.” Ichigo noted. “She said that they were pretty strong but, it’s kinda weird, y’know?”
“How about I show off?” Chris asked, standing up. “Your commander said something about an arena here, yeah?”
“Over this way, nya.” Sumomo said. “I guess we’re kinda interested to see what you can do, nya.”
Please don’t be a disaster, please don’t be a disaster... Yuki silently begged.
“I mean, I saw the girls you got strapped to your legs.” Chris said. “So I think I can appeal to you two.”
This caused the sisters to blink.
“You know guns?” Ichigo asked.
“I use all kinds of them when I fight.” Chris said. “Pretty much anything ranged.”
“I think we’re gonna like you, nya.” Sumomo smiled.
Yuki breathed out in relief. Seems like things would be fine.
“Hey you’re not a vampire, right?” Chris suddenly asked.
Ichigo blinked. “What?”
“I know Charlotta has an outfit like that, nya.” Sumomo put a hand under her chin. “Maybe we could put sis in that, nya.”
“I’m not doing that.” Ichigo said firmly.
“Hey!” A blonde girl with a superhero-esque costume and mask was running up to them. “Ichigo, I need your opinion on a new script!”
“Not now, Carole!” Ichigo shouted back. “I got a new gun-nut pal to hang out with!”
Megumi had taken Hibiki to the tables outside the cafeteria, where the two were talking about their abilities.
“You use the power of song to transform and fight monsters, huh?” Megumi said.
“Yeah, that about sums it up.” Hibiki nodded.
“So it’s like a karaoke armor, right?” Megumi asked.
“I... guess so.” Hibiki admitted.
“Well, I think it’s pretty cool.” Megumi admitted. “Transformin’ to fight monsters and villains? That’s some total Savior type stuff there.”
“I don’t really think it’s anything like that.” Hibiki rubbed the back of her head. “I just want to help people.”
“That’s also some Savior type stuff!” Megumi said.
“Why do you keep saying that?” Hibiki asked.
“Because I’m a Savior myself.” Megumi chuckled. “Wanna see what I can do?”
“Sure thing!” Hibiki said.
“Watch this.” Megumi poured a glass of water. “Keep an eye on the cup, yeah?”
Hibiki nodded, staring at the glass.
Megumi’s fingers started to spark. “Hoooh... like this!”
The water rose out of the glass. Hibiki’s eyes were wide as pie plates.
“You’re lookin’ at a prodigy psychic here!” Megumi chuckled, as she made the water dance around her.
“That’s so cool!” Hibiki had stars in her eyes.
“You fought Gods and ya think this is impressive?” Megumi blinked.
“It’s what makes you special, right?” Hibiki grinned.
“Heh, guess that’s true.” Megumi smiled. “Yer pretty humble for the girl that saved her world.”
“That’s where Chris-chan would call me airheaded or something.” Hibiki chuckled. “Oh, is it okay if I can call you Megumi-chan?”
Megumi was conflicted at the suggestion, all while spinning the water. She was pretty sure that she was older than Hibiki, but there’s also the fact that Hibiki herself was a big step-up than usual.
“Delivery!”
Megumi’s concentration broke as she splashed herself with water. “Glub!”
A pink-haired girl in a blue vest rolled up on her skateboard, giving it to a pink-haired girl in a black jacket and a tanned teal-haired girl.
“Thanks for the towels, Minori.” Chiroru Matsuoka said. “Filming is pretty hot today.”
“No issue. Thanks for the business!” Minori Ohshima said, skating away.
“Hey, Megumi. You need a towel?” Maki Kurosawa held one up.
“Yeah. ‘Preciate it.” Megumi grumbled, as Hibiki looked almost apologetic.
Period 4
Tsukasa had taken Maria to the library of the base, where there were a lot of books all over the shelves.
“It’s an impressive library, but why bring me here?” Maria asked.
“Well, I did think that you’d want to know more from our world.” Tsukasa said. “And where else to learn more about our world than a library? A quiet place like this is also helpful for a conversation.”
“How insightful of you.” Maria chuckled.
“I have to be on top of things.” Tsukasa looked proud. “I am an Elite Intel Agent, after all.”
“Does this Elite Intel Agent also read light novels?”
Tsukasa looked down to see she had instinctively grabbed one off the shelf. “Ah! Sorry!”
“It’s fine, really.” Maria smiled. “I won’t judge what you like to read... even if that cover is quite suggestive.”
“Ugh...” Tsukasa silently chided herself. “I’ll just take you to the history section before I make myself look stupid.”
“You should have more confidence in yourself.” Maria advised. “I’m sure you’re irreplaceable to your team.”
“I suppose that’s true...”
“So keep pushing forward, alright?” Maria assured her. “I’m rooting for you.”
“Mama...” Tsukasa cooed.
“Excuse me?”
Tsukasa blushed and bowed in apology. “Ah, I’m so sorry!”
Maria blinked a few times. “Is... Is there something you’d like to explain?”
“W-Well, one of our Seraph Squadron members is so caring to everyone that practically everyone mentally regresses to that of a baby in her presence.” Tsukasa explained.
Maria didn’t know how high her brow could go as she heard this.
“B-But also...” Tsukasa looked away. “Well, it’s nothing really.”
Maria could tell that Tsukasa was going into a touchy subject and decided to avoid pushing further. They had grabbed some of the world history books and moved to one of the tables. Though they were surprised to see that it was occupied by a few other Seraph Squad members.
“Nay, nay, nay! I refuse to let you write about Japanese tradition in that matter!” A girl wearing a fox mask said in a hushed voice.
“B-But it’s for my sisters...” An older girl in a green beret muttered.
A blonde girl sighed, overlooking the two. She noticed Tsukasa and Maria’s approach. “Ah, Tojo. And you are...?”
“This is a guest on base, Maria Cadenzavna Eve.” Tsukasa introduced. “Maria, may I introduce you to squad 30-G’s leader and beauty on the base, Yuina Shirakawa.”
“I don’t think of myself that way.” Yuina chuckled, shaking Maria’s hand. “Though perhaps you two can help here.”
“What seems to be the problem?” Maria asked.
“The girl in the fox mask is another member of 30-G, Miya Kiryu. The girl in the beret is the leader of squad 31-E, Ichiko Ohshima.” Tsukasa explained. “Though I’m not sure what would cause these two to come into conflict.”
“I just wanted to draw a picture book for my sisters...” Ichiko said.
“Your sisters?” Maria asked.
“Yes, all five of them.”
“F-Five?!”
“They’re sextuplets.” Yuina explained. “A squad consisting of six sisters.”
“I see... but Miya here is having problems with it?” Maria asked.
“She wants to make it a lewd book based around Japanese culture!” Miya nearly screamed.
“I just thought that the beauty of the body would help them be more engaged with it.” Ichiko said.
“And to that I say nay, nay, nay!” Miya waved a hand.
“This is incredibly stupid.” Tsukasa said, her voice harsh.
“Tsukasa?” Maria was surprised by her friend’s sudden change of tone.
“She can explain this to you later.” Tsukasa said. “Right now, I believe we should leave and ignore this ridiculousness.”
I see Tojo has entered her Awakened state. I hope Maria isn’t too shocked. Yuina thought. Still, neither of these two are backing down. I’m still not sure how to-
“I’m not sure making a book like this is appropriate.” Maria admitted, as Miya vigorously nodded. “Yet at the same time, you can look at it more from the eyes of business.”
“From the eyes of business?” Miya asked.
“It’s a lot like how celebrities have swimsuit shots on magazine covers, where over half the time it’s just to get interested readers.” Maria said. “Perhaps it can be similar here.”
“Well, drawing bodies is quite hard. I can work with drawing clothes.” Ichiko nodded.
“And if the Japanese culture is not being tainted directly, I suppose I can concede here.” Miya added.
“There we go.” Maria smiled. “Everyone wins here, right?”
What in the world is this?! Yuina widened her eyes. She managed to calm them both down in an instant?! It’s identical to the motherly aura from Murofushi! Who is this amazing woman?
“Are you amazed?” Tsukasa asked Yuina.
“I suppose I am.” Yuina was calm compared to her internal thoughts. “Thank you for your assistance, Maria.”
“Happy to help.” Maria smiled.
Kirika and Tama were on the bridge overlooking the water. Tama had cast a line out, as they were waiting for a bite.
“How often do the fish come, dess?” Kirika asked.
“Very rarely, but when they do, they’re big fish!” Tama said.
“So we won’t have to wait too long, dess?” Kirika looked into the water.
“Not long at all!” Tama said. “After all, something like this is what I was made for!”
“You really like sea stuff, huh, dess?” Kirika noted.
“I was practically born for the sea.” Tama said. “And the sea is for me!”
“Even though this is like a lake...” Kirika noted. “But what do you mean you were made for this, dess?”
“Oh, I was basically specifically raised to be a ship captain.” Tama said. “Ever since I was young, that’s all I can remember.”
“That sounds harsh, dess...” Kirika’s smile seemed to droop.
“Maybe, but I still loved sailing and everything that comes with it!” Tama declared. “But tonight, we will dine on the biggest fish!”
“Okay, dess!” Kirika said. “Let’s do it!”
“Again with the fishing?” A pink-haired girl with an angler fish hat walked up. “You know the best fish are in deeper waters!”
“Who are you, dess?” Kirika asked.
“Aina Mizuhara.” The girl said. “I know all about fish, and I can tell you that you won’t get something big here.”
“Dess?! But we’ve been standing here for hours! Tama said they’ll come, dess!” Kirika said.
“She usually had Kayamori with her and they were a bit desperate with what they did catch.” Aina said. “But I can take you both to a better fishing spot, to get all the fish we need.”
“That’s better then standing here!” Tama said.
“I’ll go into the water and catch them myself, dess!” Kirika declared.
“Then with you two assisting me, we’ll have a feast fit for the Seraph Squadron!” Aina put her hands on her hips. “Let’s go together!”
A brown-haired girl with an eyepatch walked by the three, only to suddenly stop.
“Why do I sense hundreds of souls about to leave this plane of existence?” Kozue Hiiragi wondered. “And they’re all... fishy...?”
Karen was hanging out with Shirabe at the arcade. Shirabe watched with amazement as Karen absolutely killed it at the games.
“Wow...” Shirabe saw Karen’s hands dance across the game with grace as she made zero wasteful movements.
“It might be a bit boring not playing, but I kind of wanted to show off a bit.” Karen admitted.
“It is pretty cool.” Shirabe said. “I remember some of the others said that Hibiki-san hit the arcade machine and screeched like a pterodactyl.”
“That sounds like something our own leader would do.” Karen said, thinking about Ruka.
“You look up to her a lot, it feels like.” Shirabe said.
“Yup. She’s a bit silly at times, but always knows how to pull through.” Karen said.
Shirabe was curious. “Silly how?”
Before Karen could elaborate further, a brown-haired girl in formal butler-esque wear walked up. “Pardon me.”
“Oh, hi there Yanagi.” Karen greeted. “Shirabe, this is the leader of squad 31-F, Mion Yanagi.”
“Hello.” Shirabe greeted.
Yanagi nodded. “Apologies for interrupting your game session, but one was passing by with my lady and her friend.”
Shirabe looked over to see two shorter girls peeking over. One had a blue beret and the other was wearing witches robes. “Um...”
“Kanata Maruyama and Miko Tenne.” Karen identified.
“Thanks.” Shirabe said, before turning back to Yanagi. “Why come over?”
“Well, they were just wondering if you, the new arrival on the base, were aware of Asakura’s other side.” Yanagi explained.
“Aware of what?” Shirabe asked.
“That it’s KARRIE now!” Karen’s eyes turned red as her cat hoodie sharpened into horns. “And every single one of you now will be a stain on the floor!”
Predictably, both Kanata and Miko screamed and ducked behind the corner. Shirabe and Yanagi on the other hand, were both unfazed.
“Does it not scare you that you’re alone with a serial killer?!” Karrie asked, annoyed.
“I’m a former terrorist.” Shirabe said simply. “And I fought monsters that are far scarier.”
“Likewise, one has put away scum far more terrifying than a simple serial killer.” Yanagi fixed her gloves.
“Also you can’t exactly summon your weapon and I can...” Shirabe added.
“And one is more than capable of apprehending you, should you move even an inch towards my lady.” Yanagi said.
“Tch, these two aren’t going to make an entertaining end.” Karrie grumbled. Her hoodie went back to normal, as her eyes went from harsh to soft. “Ah, sorry about that.”
“As long as there are no further complications.” Yanagi said, as she walked off to go find Kanata and Miko (Karrie sent them running for the hills).
“Sorry, Shirabe.” Karen apologized. “I hope I didn’t scare you.”
“No worries. I’ve dealt with this before.”
Karen blinked. “Wait, what do you mean you dealt with-?”
“It’s a bit of a long story.” Shirabe admitted.
“Well, I have time to listen.” Karen said. “I think Karrie might actually be interested too.”
“If that’s the case... it starts with a lot of ancient history, even more that was explained earlier...” Shirabe started.
After School
After a filling lunch of various fish dishes (Kirika looked weirdly guilty) and sharing what happened during their little excursions, Squad 31-A guided the SONG girls to the spare dorm room, where it already been cleaned up for them. The room was pretty bare aside from the beds, coffee table, couches, desks and chairs, but it was to be expected considering this was a temporary residence.
“So these are how all your rooms look like?” Maria asked, running a hand across a desk, only to find it was spotless. No traces of dust at all.
“Well, usually they’re customized since we live here long term.” Tsukasa said. “But it’s the same general formation.”
“So what do defenders of humanity like you guys do in your spare time?” Chris asked, sitting down on one of the couches.
“Defenders of humanity, huh?” Megumi grinned. “I like the sound of that.”
“Don’t get a big head.” Yuki said, before turning to the others. “Well, I suppose it might surprise, but Ruka here is the leader of a band, and we’re the other members.”
“You’re a musician?” Tsubasa asked, surprised.
“Yep.” Ruka smiled. “The lead guitarist and a vocalist of the group. Yukkie is on the drums, Megumin plays rhythm guitar, Tsukassie is on keyboard, Cappy is bassist and Karerin is also vocals. Together, we are She is Legend; Tokyo’s sensation reborn!”
Ruka had struck a dramatic pose. Megumi held up her hands and created electricity for dramatic effect.
“Wait, like the Will Smith movie?” Chris asked.
“Hold on, Will Smith exists in your world too?” Ruka asked.
“Oh, that’s really cool!” Hibiki said. “It’s just like Tsubasa-san and Maria-san!”
The electricity stopped as Squad 31-A turned to the older girls. “Huh?”
“Yup!” Kirika made jazz hands towards them. “Presenting the Queens of Music, dess!”
“You are aware that was just the name of our joint concert. We’re not officially a duo.” Tsubasa said.
“Well it fits you two.” Chris chuckled.
“Queens of Music?” Tsukasa questioned.
“Tsubasa-san and Maria are world famous idols.” Shirabe explained. “They’ve travelled the globe together a lot to perform all around the world. Though it’s mostly Maria bodyguarding Tsubasa-san.”
“A-Around the world?!” Tama breathed out.
“We’re like small potatoes compared to that...” Megumi muttered.
“Shirabe, were you boasting for us?” Maria sighed.
Though Shirabe’s stoic expression remained, she did have a small smirk. As for the leader of She is Legend...
“Uh... do I gotta bow my head, shine your shoes or something like that?” Ruka’s voice was shaky. “I didn’t realize you were the real deal, haha...”
“N-No, you don’t have to do that.” Tsubasa sweatdropped.
“Her prideful personality is gone...” Yuki murmured. “I didn’t realize how much respect she had for musicians of a higher degree...”
“You guys shouldn’t have done that.” Chris chided Kirika and Shirabe.
“We wanted to show them off, dess!” Kirika looked proud as Shirabe nodded in agreement.
Tsubasa sighed and shook her head. “Ruka, if you don’t mind, why don’t you show us some of your skill?”
“Really?” Ruka asked. “I’m kind of a mouse compared to you guys...”
“No you’re not.” Maria said. “Music is a way of communication, and I’m sure you’ve touched the hearts of many with your songs. So believe us when we say we don’t see you in a different light in the slightest just because you performed on a lower scale.”
“If that’s the case...” Ruka’s smile returned. “Allow me to show you where She is Legend practices!”
“You bounced back pretty quickly...” Yuki noted.
Evening
The Symphogears were led into the woods on base, leading to an old storage building. Entering, they saw how Squad 31-A had refurbished the room into a rather impressive studio. It was clear there was a lot of passion put into their practice area.
“I’m amazed, Ruka.” Tsubasa said, running her finger across the keyboard. “A place like this isn’t that far off from where I’d practice.”
Ruka chuckled. “It’s my pride and joy to have a place like this, ready for music making.”
“Could you play us a song?” Maria asked, sitting down on one of the chairs.
“Well, what do you say, girls?” Ruka asked her band.
“I can’t exactly say no now, can I?” Yuki sighed.
“No one said anything yet.” Megumi said. “Ya agreed before anyone could even say anything.”
“I’m just getting it out of the way ahead of time since I know everyone would say yes.” Yuki said. “What song should we show, Ruka?”
Ruka put a hand under her chin. “I say we give them the She is Legend special and introduce them to our style with “Burn My Soul.””
“Our first song, huh?” Karen smiled.
“Then we can’t disappoint them!” Tama raised a fist.
“I agree!” Tsukasa nodded, already excited.
The other SONG members had also sat down, anticipating the incoming song. Ruka grinned as she grabbed her guitar. She strummed the strings once, as her friends got into position. “Alright then, listen to our song!”
(Insert Burn My Soul by She is Legend)
From the first opening notes, the song was already exploding into action as all the instruments blasted into a powerful intro. Ruka and Karen’s vocals tied it all together as they started to sing. Hibiki and Kirika were already getting into the mood with cheers, while Chris and Shirabe were quieter with their enjoyment. On the other hand, Tsubasa and Maria were practically studying the performance.
The way she carries herself... there’s such a casual confidence to it. Tsubasa noted, watching Ruka sing and play guitar. It’s different from my own performances. I can understand why she saw success in her world.
With one final guitar strum and beat of the drums, She is Legend finished their performance. The SONG agents clapped, though Hibiki and Kirika in particular gave a standing ovation.
“Ta da!” Ruka had a proud smile on her face, any sense of nervousness and uncertainty gone. “That’s the new She is Legend in action! What did you think? Did we blow your socks off?”
“It was so good!” Hibiki whooped. “So cool!”
“Cool.” Shirabe parroted.
“Yeah, pretty damn good.” Chris agreed.
“Encore, encore, dess!” Kirika said.
“Hold up a sec.” Ruka held a hand up. “I wanna get the constructive criticism from the experts.”
“It’s very different from our own music, we can say that.” Maria noted.
“Yet at the same time, I can hear the passion and soul behind your music.” Tsubasa smiled. “The songs you and your friends play will bring joy to the world, Ruka.”
“A super passing grade and first name basis!” Ruka grinned. “I call that a perfect score!”
“Normally I’m not the one to comment this, but it does feel nice having our work validated by experts.” Yuki admitted.
“This makes us pros, yeah?” Megumi asked.
“I think the lack of all the musical celebrities nowadays means we are by default.” Tsukasa said.
“Pro leagues, yeah!” Tama cheered.
“I think that’s for baseball specifically...” Karen noted.
“I’d like to listen to your other songs some time.” Tsubasa said.
“Glad to hear it, but we really gotta get to writing a new song.” Ruka said. “We do concerts pretty often, so we gotta cook up a tune.”
“We’re a bit behind schedule, though.” Tsukasa said. “The last few missions took a bit longer than we thought.”
“And we can’t just play one of our old songs as the opening act.” Yuki said. “Those should be saved for the encores.”
“Wait, I think I got an idea!” Hibiki raised a hand.
“What is it?” Karen asked.
“Our group is pretty musically talented! What if we help out with a song of ours?” Hibiki suggested.
“Hmm... that is an idea.” Ruka agreed. “We can take a bit of a backseat then and focus on music. Karerin and I can be supporting vocals then.”
“But, like them, we can’t just use one of our old songs.” Tsubasa said.
“We’re in another world though.” Maria pointed out. “So one of our old songs would technically be new here. I’d be fine introducing this world to some of ours.”
“Plus, if we play a cover of it, that’s not the same as you guys just, playing a recording of your old stuff.” Ruka said.
“I suppose that’s true.” Tsubasa agreed. “I’d be honored to bring our music to your world.”
“You guys got a music video or something you can play?” Ruka asked. “Show us your songs so we can get a good idea and decide which one to do.”
“We’re gonna have to make it a movie night.” Chris chuckled. “There are a lot of songs.”
Night 1
After about an hour of showing videos, the SONG agents reconvened in their borrowed dorm to discuss everything that had transpired. They had finished summarizing everything after their arrival, and also reported anything significant they learned from their free time with the members of Squad 31-A. In particular, they were enjoying their recollection of the other Seraph Squad members they met today.
“Delivery folk, sword fighters, assassins, marine biologists, butlers, and even sextuplets, huh...” Chris went through a few.
“There’s a lot of nice people on the base!” Hibiki said.
“I think “nice” isn’t the correct word, but they were polite.” Shirabe said. “But it is surprising to know that Squad 31-A has two people that can switch personalities on a whim.”
“Tsukasa and Karen.” Maria said, remembering what Tsukasa had explained to her, and what Shirabe reported. “I’d imagine their teams had gotten used to it by now, but it was surprising hearing Tsukasa so harsh in this “Awakened” state of hers..”
“It’s weird that Karrie feels just as natural as Karen.” Shirabe added.
“We can’t really talk when it comes to weirdness, dess.” Kirika pointed out.
“Though this is a step-above our usual weirdness.” Chris admitted.
“So, what’s the final verdict?” Maria asked. “And I don’t need your answer, Hibiki.”
“Ahaha...” Hibiki rubbed the back of her head. “I’m that predictable, huh...”
“I believe they’re all trustworthy allies.” Tsubasa concluded.
“Same here, dess!” Kirika nodded with Shirabe.
“Yeah they’re weird, but we can’t really talk.” Chris admitted.
Maria looked out the window. The moon was hidden behind the clouds. “Still, to fight in a war at such a young age...”
“It’s not that different from our fight with the Noise and more.” Chris noted. “Though this world wasn’t as lucky as we were.”
“And we really can’t help them more than we already are?” Hibiki asked.
“We don’t really have the right to interfere with this world.” Tsubasa said. “We don’t know the potential catastrophic outcomes if we extend our hand too far. We need to remove the Noise threat here, as that’s our responsibility.”
“But this is dimension travel, not time travel, dess.” Kirika said.
“I understand it though.” Shirabe said. “I’d feel weird if someone super strong just showed up and solved all our world’s problems. We can’t do that either.”
“And evacuation to our world is just not feasible, even with the significantly lowered population.” Maria added. “Not to mention how they can’t even go through Gjallarhorn without a Symphogear.”
“Man, this still sucks.” Chris grumbled. “We’re helping, but it’s more like we’re cleaning up our mess.”
There was a knock on the door, and Hibiki stepped up to open it. “Oh, hi Ruka!”
“Yo, Bikki.” Ruka waved. “You guys all here?”
“Yeah, why?” Hibiki asked.
“Was wondering if you guys wanted to wash up with us.” Ruka asked.
Chris raised a brow. Having a good grip on Ruka’s mischievous nature, she half-expected an ulterior motive. Yet Ruka’s offer was completely genuine.
Night 2
“You are the worst sometimes, you know that?” Yuki asked, sitting in the bath.
“Come on, I’m innocent here!” Ruka protested, getting in next to her.
The two teams had gathered in the baths for some quality bonding time. Yuki looked around at everybody, but noted the rather well-toned bodies of the Symphogear-users.
“Holy crap, those are some nice muscles on ya, Hibiki!” Megumi said, staring at Hibiki’s body.
“Well, I do train a lot.” Hibiki said. “The others are saying I’m starting to look like my Master.”
“Ya gotta arm-wrestle Karrie sometime!” Megumi looked excited at the idea.
“They’ll break the table, dess!” Kirika said.
“But it would be cool...” Tama mused.
“You know, they could always arm wrestle on the floor instead.” Shirabe pointed out.
Karen chuckled. “I think the floor would break too...”
“Wow...” Tsukasa was staring at Maria’s beautifully-toned body. One fitting of an idol of her status.
“Do you want me to wash your back for you?” Maria offered.
“You seriously asked six girls you met in one day to join us in the bath?” Yuki asked. “There’s got to be a catch here.”
“I say believe her.” Chris was sitting on the edge of the tub. “And I’m pretty good at picking up when people are being weirdos.”
“There’s nothing like a warm soak to bring us closer.” Tsubasa agreed, rinsing the soap off her well-toned idol body, honed by years of training. “I appreciate the offer, Ruka.”
“Anytime, Basa!” Ruka grinned. “Seriously, anytime. I’m down for some bath-time songwriting or something.”
“Why did you make it sound like an innuendo?” Yuki asked, irritated.
“I was talking about actual songwriting. You’re the one that thought it was something else.” Ruka chuckled.
Realizing she could feel the stares of the others, Yuki slid into the water as if attempting to hide.
Ruka leaned back, sighing happily. “Nothing beats bath time.”
Late Night
Normally around this time, Ruka would be in bed, but found herself waking up. Nature called for everyone, after all.
After relieving herself in the bathroom, she realized that someone else was also up at this hour. Tsubasa was sitting at one of the lounge tables. She was in a pair of borrowed pyjamas, reading through several folders.
“Hey, Basa. Whatcha up to this late?” Ruka asked
“Ah, Ruka. Did I wake you?”
“Nah, I had to use the bathroom.” Ruka said, sitting down at the table. “What are you doing this late?”
“I’m used to operating without much sleep due to training.” Tsubasa explained. “I was using this opportunity to go through a few files your commander provided.”
“Provided about what?”
“When Will Smith was mentioned earlier, I was curious to see if our worlds shared any similarities with famous figures.” Tsubasa said. “I’m surprised to see several names, and how the histories of our worlds are relatively similar.”
“Really? That’s pretty cool.” Ruka said. “Ooh, maybe there were other versions of you guys here, or maybe we even got versions of us over there!”
“That’s entirely possible, but the commander said that it’d be difficult to receive the data for us to check here.” Tsuabsa said. “I do plan on seeing the situation from our world when we return home.”
“Yeah that makes sense.” Ruka leaned back in her chair. “If you guys do find a “me” over there, I wonder what I’m like...”
“I’m sure she’d also be a talented musician like yourself.” Tsubasa said.
“Thanks for the ego boost.” Ruka grinned, as Tsubasa let out a small chuckle. “Man, we’ve only met for a day, but I like this little wavelength we got going on. Musicians gotta stick together, yeah?”
Tsubasa smiled. “You sound quite a lot like Tachibana when you speak like that. She says a lot of similar things along the lines of “reaching out”.”
“Then I just gotta talk to Bikki more.” Ruka concluded. “But when we got more free time, I wanna talk more with you too, y’know?”
“That can be arranged.” Tsubasa agreed. “I did enjoy this talk.”
“I got to ask.” Ruka sat up. “How jealous would the people of your world be, knowing that I’m having a casual one-on-one talk with one of their most popular idols?”
“You’d thank everything that you’re a talented musician and that you and I are just discussing a potential collaborative work.” Tsubasa said.
“Jeez, idol fans are real scary...”
Notes:
Hello everybody, and welcome to a new story of mine.
As many of you know, Symphogear is one of my favorite franchises of all time, and I had just recently finished up my story (Symphogear X2) for it. But part of me wanted to write more, and this is where this new short story comes from.
Heaven Burns Red is a visual novel game that has taken a strong hold of my mind with the powerful writing and colorful cast of characters. I've tossed ideas around here and there for writing ideas, but nothing seemed to click (I even had crossover ideas with both RWBY and Lycoris Recoil). But after reading a short crossover with Honkai: Star Rail that treated the fic like an event for the game, that's when I got thinking. What if I tried something like that, but for Symphogear?
Both series have that main squad of six, and that's when I started looking deeper and realized "wait, there's a lot of character parallels I could make here". Hence, this short story was born. It won't be a very long story, but it's one I hope that can get my enjoyment of both series across.
Feel free to leave a review. See you all next time.
Chapter Text
Early Morning
The SONG agents were woken rather abruptly the following morning. Their next door neighbors were blasting rock music early in the day. A very muffled “GYAYAGRAYYYY BODODODODUOH” could be heard from Ruka.
“Gah!” Chris sat up, scowling. “What the hell is wrong with them?!”
“And just when we thought we’d get used to some of their antics...” Maria shook her head.
“Something tells me this won’t be the last time this happens...” Shirabe murmured.
Morning
After 31-A did roll call, Tezuka called them and SONG to her office.
“I apologize for calling you in this early, but there are a few updates.” Tezuka said.
“Hey can we get a sorry too?” Ruka asked, as Yuki gently pushed her shoulder.
“It’s no issue. What is it?” Maria asked.
“At around 3 in the morning, the activity of the Cancer in the mountain had increased significantly.” Tezuka said. “There were also sightings of other creatures, which I am going to assume from the information we received, are the Noise creatures from your world.”
“A sudden spike in activity?” Tsubasa put a hand under her chin.
“Squad 31-A will be sent to investigate it. Though you aren’t under our command, I would request that you join them.” Tezuka said.
“We have no issue with that.” Maria said. “We will accompany them.”
“Yeah, look out Noise and Cancer! We’re taking you down!” Ruka said.
“Wow, that sounds real depressin’ out loud.” Megumi noted.
“When you say ‘em side by side like that... yeah, it sounds like crap.” Chris agreed.
“It doesn’t even sound like we’re fighting aliens anymore.” Karen admitted.
“Well regardless of what we’re fighting, we can’t just ignore it!” Ruka said. “It’s not gonna go away like that!”
“We’re still talking about the aliens, right, dess?” Kirika asked.
“C’mon, teams! Let’s go kick some butt!”
Period 1
Squad 31-A and SONG arrived at the heliport, where Nanami Nanase was waiting for them.
“Yo, Nanamin!” Ruka waved.
“The Commander has already informed me of the situation, Cadet Kayamori.” Nanami said. “The helicopter is ready.”
“On top of things as always, huh?” Ruka grinned. “You’re the best, Nanamin.”
“Helicopter, huh?” Chris looked at the chopper. “We’ve used these a few times ourselves. Think Maria piloted one too.”
“It was certainly an experience.” Maria agreed.
“The helicopters will drop you off a little higher than the base of the mountain. That is the area where the Cancer and Noise have been seen the least.” Nanami explained.
“Works for us!” Ruka said.
“Yeah, all good for us too!” Hibiki nodded.
“Then good luck.” Nanami said.
The helicopter landed above the base of the mountain, as the two teams stepped onto solid ground.
“Alright, let’s move.” Ruka said, before turning to SONG. “You guys might wanna transform first, since you guys don’t have the barriers we do.”
“Good call, dess!” Kirika agreed.
All six of them sang their holy chants, before six flashes of light hid them. The armor formed around their bodies, finishing their transformations.
“So cool...” Tama was still in awe.
“I don’t think it’s fully settled in we’re fighting alongside actual godkillers.” Tsukasa said.
“Magical girl godkillers too.” Karen added.
“Magical girl godkillers that are also mecha superheroes.” Ruka said.
“Girls, just pick one and stick with it.” Megumi sighed. “Yer givin’ me a headache.”
“You guys are definitely going a bit overboard. Though it kinda reminds me of the cover stories SONG comes up with.” Chris admitted.
“Cover stories?” Yuki asked.
“In order to prevent widespread information and keep our identities as hidden as possible, SONG’s information division has used several forms of cover stories to keep us under the radar.” Tsubasa explained. “In particular, they’ve made a franchise called The Kaiketsu☆Utazukin! to explain our sudden appearances on various battlefields.”
“Wait, how did you say the star part of the title-?” Tsukasa started to ask.
“And that one in particular is based around Chris-chan!” Hibiki said.
Ruka looked at Chris’ transformation up and down. “Oooh, I get it. Since Utazukin is a Red Riding Hood parody, and Chris is like Red Riding Hood with guns.”
“Yeah. I thought it was dumb at first, but they did make it work.” Chris admitted. “Show’s not half-bad either.”
“Well then, let’s get started with the long walk, girls.” Ruka said.
“I’ve been preparing for this!” Tama said. “I won’t get exhausted this time!”
“We’ll beat the mountain!” Tsukasa declared.
“We won’t be doing that exactly, but we won’t get super tired like last time.” Karen said.
“Are you going to be alright, Chris? Kirika?” Maria asked.
“It’s just a small walk up the mountain, dess!” Kirika said.
“Plus, our Symphogears help deal with the exhaustion issues like it’s no big deal.” Chris added.
“Just making sure, considering the training sessions we’ve had.” Maria said.
“Not the most athletic, huh?” Ruka asked.
“I guess those transformations give an even bigger boost than we thought.” Yuki said, seeing how heavy the armor looked in spite of how easily the girls were walking.
Period 2
The girls had hiked up quite a bit, while SONG’s members told them a few of their stories.
“That stuff is still crazy to hear.” Ruka admitted. “You guys seriously fought a naked dude that used the power of a God to turn into a bull man thingy?”
“Well, Tachibana prevented him from actually using divine power in the first place.” Tsubasa clarified.
“Still, that’s really cool!” Ruka had stars in her eyes. “Compared to us, we’re kinda tame.”
“Are you really going to discredit all our work like that?” Yuki asked.
“I have to agree with her.” Tsubasa said. “Your battles and struggles were just as important as ours.”
“Also those stronger Cancer being the size of mountains? We don’t deal with that too often.” Chris said. “Noise might be as big as buildings, but even that size is a bit much.”
“Take pride in your work.” Maria said. “We can already see that you’re worthy protectors of humanity.”
“Well, if heroes like you guys are saying that, I guess I’m inclined to agree!” Ruka chuckled. “Though now that we’re talking about stuff like that, I got another question.”
“We’re all ears! Even if it looks like our ears are covered, dess.” Kirika said.
“I gotta wonder, what if we tried singing and fighting at the same time?” Ruka suggested. “I mean, it’s just singing, right?”
“Oh, and we get that super cool armor too, huh?” Megumi said. “I like the sound of that. I bet we’d look totally kickass!”
“But you guys would need to sing, meaning that only Ruka and I would be able to use it.” Karen said.
“We sometimes do backing vocals, so that should count, right?” Tsukasa asked.
“It’s not that simple.” Shirabe said. “To use a Symphogear, you need to be a candidate.”
“A candidate?” Tama asked. “You mean like, there’s tryouts?”
“You need to be comparable with the relic you’re using.” Hibiki explained. “Not everyone can just use any relic. And sometimes you might not even be comparable enough, so it’ll get... rough.”
“Rough how?” Yuki asked.
“It can damage the body, for starters.” Tsubasa said. “A low compatibility is enough to cause severe internal injuries. A well-trained body and mind would need years to improve their compatibility.”
“And you guys gotta keep watch for yourselves, and sing and fight at the same time?” Ruka was impressed.
“We do.” Shirabe said.
“That’s amazing.” Tsukasa said. “Though I can imagine we’d have problems learning it on the fly...”
“I don’t see a need for it.” Tsubasa admitted. “I’ve seen you all in battle, and you’re quite skilled without a Symphogear. Those weapons of yours work well enough.”
“Well, they might sometimes have errors, but they’ve been with us through thick and thin.” Ruka said. “I wouldn’t trade my girls for anything.”
“You... know our weapons aren’t sentient, right?” Yuki asked.
“I thought you’d be used to this by now.” Megumi said.
“It’s good to think of your swords as an extension of yourself.” Tsubasa said. “It improves your mobility and skill that way.”
“I think you’re really happy to talk to someone else who uses swords, Tsubasa-san.” Hibiki noted.
“I suppose I am, Tachibana.” Tsubasa nodded. “My conversations with Ruka turn out quite fruitful.”
“Seriously?” Chris asked, remembering about how silly 31-A’s leader could be.
“We’re the sword and song sisters!” Ruka said, putting an arm around Tsubasa’s shoulders.
“I use a sword too, sometimes.” Maria reminded the others.
“Yours is a knife.” Shirabe said.
“But it can be as long as a sword.” Maria said.
“Then it’s a long knife, dess!” Kirika said.
“You’re not being jealous of their shared sword solidarity, are you?” Tsukasa asked.
“N-No...”
“Hmm... there’s actually something I wanted to ask, Bikki.” Ruka suddenly spoke up.
“Yeah? What is it?” Hibiki turned to her.
“I remember in your intro that you mentioned you weren’t in a relationship until recently.” Ruka said. “So you’re seeing someone?”
“Why would you ask that?” Yuki raised a brow. “That’s not something you can ask out of nowhere.”
“Well, it was part of her introduction and I thought it was important. It’s like how she also didn’t mention her weight.” Ruka said.
“You have no tact sometimes.” Yuki sighed.
“It’s okay, I’m fine with it!” Hibiki assured them. “But yeah, my girlfriend is Miku Kohinata! We’ve known each other since forever!”
“Childhood friends to lovers, huh? That’s rad.” Ruka said.
“It took them way too long to realize it.” Chris grumbled.
“Lemme guess, everyone else saw it but them?” Megumi guessed.
The other five Symphogear users nodded while Hibiki chuckled, rubbing the back of her head.
“Well, doesn’t that sound familiar.” Tsukasa said, glancing at Yuki.
“...why are you staring at me like that?” Yuki asked.
“You and Ruka smooched, so it counts, right?” Tama asked.
“NO IT DOESN’T!” Yuki screamed.
“Wow, it doesn’t?” Ruka sounded disappointed. “But that was one of the most important moments of our lives...”
“STOP MAKING IT SOUND WORSE!” Yuki begged.
“I... see you two have some history together.” Maria coughed into her fist.
“IT WAS CPR! CPR! IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK!” Yuki shouted.
“Ah, so you were saving Ruka’s life?” Tsubasa tried helping Yuki out.
“And when I woke up, she asked me to never leave her. She proposed to me.” Ruka remembered.
“You two married?” Chris asked.
“WE’RE NOT MARRIED EVEN IF WE MIGHT AS WELL BE MARRIED!” Yuki shouted.
“It’s this bad, dess?” Kirika realized.
“Incredible.” Shirabe added.
“Well, good luck to both of you!” Hibiki smiled.
“It’s not like-!” Yuki widened her eyes. “Girls, heads up!”
31-A summoned their weapons, as a horde of Cancer came down the mountainside.
“Where’d they come from?” Ruka gripped her blades. “We didn’t see them coming!”
“They must’ve used the trees as cover...” Yuki realized. “Ruka, your orders!”
“We’re gonna need a more open area if there are 12 of us fighting.” Ruka said. “We should fall back to the clearing we passed earlier!”
“That might prove to be a problem.” Maria said.
“Why?”
“The other guys are behind us!” Tama shouted.
Seeping out of the ground were the bulbous Noise. Squad 31-A and SONG were surrounded completely by both the Cancer and Noise.
“Y’know I probably should’ve asked earlier, but you guys got some tips to taking down Noise?” Ruka asked.
“They’re usually immune to most weaponry, but I’d imagine your weapons would be enough.” Tsubasa said. “But just as a precaution, we’ll handle the Noise while you handle the Cancer.”
“Stick to our specialties. Got it!” Ruka nodded. “Let’s go, everyone!”
The two teams rushed out at the alien enemies, tearing through their forces. Despite being outnumbered, the two teams of six proved far too much for the monsters. Tsubasa, Ruka, Maria and Tama’s blades slashed foes apart. Kirika and Karrie’s scythes tore them asunder. Yuki, Chris and Tsukasa filled them full of bullet holes. Shirabe’s saws shredded through any armor while Megumi crushed them with her massive sword. And Hibiki was weaving between the ranks, smashing through the formations with her powerful strikes.
“Hah! These suckers don’t stand a chance!” Megumi shouted, stabbing a larger Cancer and tearing through the barrier.
“I will say...” Tsukasa shot at the weakened Cancer, finishing it off. “It’s one thing to team-up with fellow squads. It’s another working alongside SONG.”
“You’re not the only one!” Maria swung out her whip-sword, ensnaring several Noise. “Fighting alongside you all is different from our own allies!”
Chris dropped from above, shooting the Noise with crossbow bolts. “Different, but similar enough.”
We’re taking the Cancer and Noise down at an accelerated rate... how? Yuki wondered as she blasted several Cancer. Is it the singing they were talking about? Is that why we’re all so in-sync despite it being only a day since we started working together?
Several trees were knocked over, as a larger Noise came into view. Looking up, Ruka smirked. “Hey, Basa! Mind giving me a hand here?”
“Gladly.” Tsubasa nodded, raising a pair of swords to match Ruka’s.
The large Noise shot out several tendrils at the two, but they jumped to the side to avoid it. Kicking off the fallen trees, they jumped skyward. They tore their blades on each side, slashing upwards as they slashed it in a cross pattern, slicing it into four before it burst into carbon.
“Yeah!” Ruka landed. “That’s how it’s done!”
So they can harm Noise with their weapons. Tsubasa noted. And they’re unharmed thanks to their barriers. That’s relieving.
As they regrouped, Yuki put a hand under her chin. “So the Noise come from the ground?”
“Not necessarily.” Maria said. “Though with the Noise in the new world, we can’t be sure if their behaviour is the same as they would in our world.”
“The Cancer seemed different too.” Karen noted. “The way they moved was almost more maniacal, when you can normally predict the movements from the lower-tier Cancer.”
“And with how we took ‘em down, I don’t think they’re gettin’ weaker.” Megumi said. “They’re still the tough little jerks we know.”
Chris tapped her foot. “Something feels wrong... maybe we should try tracking them down from where they came?”
“So we gotta keep going up the mountain.” Ruka said. “Let’s get going.”
Period 3
Instead of trading stories this time, Squad 31-A and SONG opted to travel in silence, keeping watch on all sides. This time if there was an ambush, they’d see it coming a mile away.
“Did you hear that?” Karen suddenly asked.
Everyone froze, looking around. Shirabe narrowed her eyes. “Which way?”
“Over there.” Karen said, pointing off a ledge.
“Approach with caution.” Maria advised.
Everyone slowly stepped towards the ledge, keeping as quiet as they could. Looking over the ledge, a large spider-like Cancer was resting in the rocks. The center part was large and bulbous, and the creature seemed asleep.
“That’s a big Cancer...” Ruka said.
“Why is it more colorful though?” Tsukasa asked.
Hibiki looked closer. “Hey guys, doesn’t that color pattern look like...?”
“A Noise, dess!” Kirika whispered.
“Wait... those two things combined?” Chris realized.
Several Cancer scuttled nearby, keeping closer to it. The Noise were partially in the ground, practically swimming in circles.
“But how?” Yuki turned to SONG. “Can they do that?”
“No, they shouldn’t be able to...” Tsubasa muttered.
“Maybe when the Noise got into this world, that jump made it fuse with the Cancer here?” Maria theorized.
“We’re gonna have to report this to Elfnein later. See if she can make heads or tails of it.” Chris said.
“Should we attack or retreat?” Karen asked. “Karrie’s really excited to start fighting.”
SONG looked closer. The Cancer-Noise hybrid wasn’t moving, but there were far more Noise and Cancer present compared to the smaller skirmish earlier.
“We’ll fall back for now.” Tsubasa said, as the others nodded. “We know where it is, and we know that it has several Noise and Cancer allied with it. If we want to guarantee the Noise threat is finished, we’ll need a solid plan. Perhaps a few extra allies from the other squads if your Commander is willing.”
“No problem there.” Ruka said. “I can ask her specifically, and I know a couple of folks who’d be willing to help out.”
“Then let’s quietly leave.” Maria said.
Everyone nodded, though Ruka glanced over the ledge again.
“Ruka?” Yuki asked.
“You know... if that big guy is a fusion of Cancer and the Noise...” Ruka put a hand to her chin. “We could call it the “Noicer!””
“We are NOT calling it that.” Yuki shot the idea down.
Returning to base via the helicopter, they entered Tezuka’s office once more. They reported what they had seen to the Commander.
“So... the aliens from your world fused with the ones from ours into this... Noise-Cancer hybrid?” Tezuka asked.
“We’re calling it the “Noicer.”” Ruka said.
“We are NOT.” Yuki put her foot down.
“Were you unable to defeat it?” Tezuka asked.
“After some thinking, we decided to retreat ahead of time.” Tsubasa said. “Though our team of twelve have proven strong, we’d like extra assistance for an assault tomorrow. We don’t want to risk any Noise escaping.”
“Very well.” Tezuka nodded. “I’m not sure who will be available to assist tomorrow morning as others will be on different missions, but I shall inform you of which Seraph Squadron members will be able to fight at your side. In the meantime, take the time to recover if need be.”
“Thank you, Commander Tezuka.” Maria smiled.
“It’s strange.” Tezuka commented. “We’ve only known each other for less than two days, yet it feels like we’ve fought together for quite a some time.”
“Guess military stuff is second-nature to us now.” Chris shrugged.
“Maybe we’re just better listeners than Ruka, dess!” Kirika suggested.
“Hey, hey! I listen perfectly fine to the Commander!” Ruka protested.
“You literally talked about putting her in a skintight cosplay yesterday.” Yuki deadpanned.
“That doesn’t count!” Ruka said. “I listen really well, right Commander?”
Tezuka merely stared at her.
Tsukasa closed her eyes, feeling the secondhand embarrassment. “I think that silence speaks for itself...”
Period 4
With their plans for tomorrow laid out, the teams had split apart to take the rest of the day off. Tsukasa, Karen and Tama had decided to take Maria, Kirika and Shirabe to the cafeteria for conversation. Dinner wasn’t for a while, so it was less crowded. Kirika wasn’t complaining since half of 31-A was offering to pay for any snacks.
“The night before a full-scale operation always feels like this.” Tsukasa noted.
“Always intense.” Karen agreed.
“So you gotta stock up on sweets, dess!” Kirika said, scarfing down some cookies.
“Kiri-chan you’re going to spoil your appetite for later.” Shirabe frowned.
“You’re saying this while snacking on candy, dess!” Kirika grinned.
Shirabe pouted, before popping a gummy in her mouth.
“Though it is rather relieving how the facility provides you all with so many different accommodations.” Maria said. “It reminds me quite a bit of SONG itself and its support.”
“Well, we do live here.” Tsukasa said. “It’s more-or-less our home now.”
“Though my home will always be on the big blue sea!” Tama declared.
Kirika was chewing her cookies when she noticed a girl with a helmet and lobster claw glove. Blinking a few times, she saw the little girl staring at the cookies as if she was studying them. What was so notable was that Kirika was sure that she had seen the girl when they had walked in earlier. Swallowing her last cookie, Kirika decided to walk over and ask. Curiosity had overtaken her. “Hi there, dess! What are you looking for?”
“I’m looking for a cookie for Master, snip!” The girl said. “But they’re out of her favourite kind!”
“Oh really, dess?” Kirika said. “What kind did she want?”
“She said chocolate chunk, snip!” The girl said.
Kirika sweatdropped, remembering that she had just finished off the last of the chocolate chunk cookies. She wasn’t sure how to handle this.
“Bungo?” A girl with white hair and an eyepatch walked into the cafeteria. “It’s been almost an hour. Iz everything alright, my minion?”
“There are no more chocolate chunk cookies of the best kind, snip!” Bungo said.
“That’s because Kiri-chan ate them all.” Shirabe said, walking up with the others.
“Dess?! Why would you sell me out like that, Shirabe?!” Kirika shook her by the shoulders.
“You still have some chocolate on your mouth. They’d figure it out eventually.” Shirabe said, as Kirika kept shaking her like crazy.
“Vell, there’s not much ve can do about that.” The white-haired girl shrugged.
“Wait! I remember Shirabe mentioned she could cook. Maybe she could make some?” Tama suggested.
Kirika stopped shaking Shirabe. “That’s right, dess! Shirabe, you got to make some super tasty cookies, dess!”
“I guess I can...” Shirabe was shaking off the dizziness.
“Get to it! They’re for Master, snip!” Bungo said.
“Zat’s not good my minion. Did I teach you to be rude to someone villing to help vith our planz?” The white-haired girl asked.
Bungo bowed her head. “S-Sorry, snip.”
“It’s okay.” Shirabe said. “You can all help.”
“Ve appreciate it.” The white-haired girl introduced herself. “Ah, I’ve forgotten to introduce myzelf. You may call me Bon Ivar Yamawaki, future ruler of the world.”
“And I’m her minion, the fearsome Yayoi Bungo, snip!”
As Shirabe led them into the kitchen to make cookies, Maria, Tsukasa and Karen looked on.
“You do have the colorful cast here.” Maria noted. “Though I wasn’t expecting a super-villain and minion here.”
“If you’re asking about Yamawaki and Bungo, they’re not actually evil.” Tsukasa said.
“That much I did figure, since your team does have a serial killer.” Maria remembered.
Karen looked off to the side before looking back at Maria. “I think Karrie’s insulted you compared her to people playing pretend.”
“Playing pretend?” Maria repeated.
“Yamawaki’s real personality isn’t that of a villain. It’s just a role she has to play for Bungo’s sake.” Tsukasa said. “I’d rather not explain more since that’s Yamawaki’s private business, but she’s a kind girl deep down and a strong leader for Squad 31-C.”
“Pretending to be a villain, huh...” Maria softly smiled, though Tsukasa could feel a hint of sadness in her tone.
After School
Tsubasa was sent back, her feet skidding on the dirt. She raised her practice sword again, as Yuina Shirakawa raised one of her own.
“Your skill is amazing.” Yuina praised. “Ogasahara and Tsukishiro haven’t praised your skills enough.”
“Maria said she sensed a strong warrior, so I was more than glad to take up the chance to test my ability further.” Tsubasa said.
Tsubasa was engaged in another duel, this time against Yuina Shirakawa. Yuina was curious about their new ally’s skill, so she wanted to see just what had interested Monaka and Hisame. A few Seraph Squadron members had come over to observe as well. The curious viewers included Ichigo who wanted to talk guns with Chris again, but she also brought along Byakko (who Hibiki was cuddling). Among them were Isuzu Ohshima of Squad 31-E, and Shiki Hanamura of Squad 31-F.
“God damn, look at them go.” Ichigo said, impressed.
“Their duel is like a sonata of passion.” Shiki put a hand under her chin. “Fantastic...!”
“If Niina wasn’t always staring at her reflection, she’d be envious from their sword work being this much better.” Isuzu noted.
“Grrr!” Byakko seemed to nod.
“Ichigo and the artists are pretty fired up.” Ruka noted.
“What about you, Ruka?” Hibiki asked, cuddling the big tiger. “You’re the musician!”
“Well, I gotta agree with Shikkie.” Ruka said. “Basa’s duel with Hisame-chi and Inorin felt like a skilled duel between masters. But Basa’s duel with Yuina-senpai... it’s almost like they’re dancing on the battlefield.”
“That’s Senpai for you.” Chris proudly smiled. “She can make anything work.”
“I can agree there.” Yuki nodded. “It’s similar for us and Shirakawa.”
“We can make a “proud of our sword senpai” club.” Ruka suggested.
“That name’s so lame.” Chris and Yuki both said at the same time.
Byakko seemed to growl in agreement.
With another clash, Tsubasa and Yuina had finished their duel. Both of them had worked up a sweat from how intense it had gotten.
“Looks like they’re done now.” Megumi said. “It lasted pretty dang long for a duel.”
“Impressive.” Yuina put her practice sword down. “I couldn’t get a single clean hit in.”
“Likewise, the fact that you were able to push me to such an extent is also worthy of praise.” Tsubasa said, sheathing the blade.
“You fight like a seasoned veteran.” Yuina noted. “Though there is something I noticed.”
“The way you fight, it’s like you’ve been had a partner for years.” Ichigo spoke up, Yuina nodding to her point. “It’s that pink-haired girl, right?”
Tsubasa briefly hesitated. “Yes.”
“Gotcha.” Ichigo smiled. “Then you’d better watch her back, alright?”
“I always trust my allies. Maria especially.” Tsubasa sheathed her sword.
“That’s relieving to hear.” Yuina said. “I’m honored to have traded blades with you. I can see how you’re Maria’s partner.”
Tsubasa shook Yuina’s hand. “It was my pleasure, Yuina Shirakawa.”
“You two look pretty tired after that.” Isuzu said. “You guys fine if I help you loosen up with a massage?”
“Veto, VETO!” Ruka crossed her arms in an “X” shape.
“I was wondering what the noise was.” A nun in a red uniform walked up. “I’m not surprised to see you here.”
“Who’s the nun?” Chris asked.
“Oh, this is the other Maria I was talking about.” Ruka said.
“Buongiorno.” Maria slightly bowed her head. “I hope the cazzone wasn’t proving too troublesome.”
“Aw come on, why are you so nice to everyone but me?” Ruka pouted.
“I’ll kill you.” Maria glared.
“She’s joking, right?” Hibiki asked.
“Yeah that’s her bit.” Ruka said. “To me and Irene specifically.”
“What brings you here?” Ichigo asked her friend.
“Carole wanted to call a team meeting, but Charlotta is missing.” Maria said. “I know she tends to stay around you quite a bit, so you were the first person I decided to ask.”
“Charl?” Ruka grumbled.
“Over there.” Isuzu pointed over her shoulder at the large tree in the center of Narby Square.
Byakko sniffed the air before slightly growling.
“I did sense an ominous presence behind the tree before my duel started with Shirakawa.” Tsubasa said.
“You did?” Chris said. “I just thought that girl was leaning against it for a better view of the sparring session.”
Ruka sighed when she saw a bit of a black jacket peeking out from the tree. “Charl, why are you behind the tree?”
“Charl is not behind the tree.” The girl behind the tree said.
“Why did none of you guys say anything?” Ruka asked the others, as every single one of them shrugged.
Maria walked up behind it, sighting as she pulled her squadmate out. “There you are. Why are you hiding there?”
“RuKa Is WiTh OtHeR wOmEn...” Charlotta’s voice seemed to distort.
“Calm down, Charlotta.” Maria said.
“Heheh, Ruka’s charms naturally attract those all around the Seraph Squadron. Perhaps you’ll rival me one day.” Shiki chuckled.
“Absolutely not, Shikkie.” Ruka said, flatly.
Wow, Ruka of all people is responding that quickly. Guess this girl’s even more trouble than I thought. Chris glanced at the sly smile on Shiki’s face.
“Is she your friend, Ruka?” Hibiki asked.
“Well, uh...”
“Ruka is my destiny...” Charlotte said, hands on her cheeks, a rather love-struck expression on her face.
“Are you still sure about your fellow harem denial, Ruka?” Shiki asked.
“Absolutely.”
“I mean it’s definitely not with how she keeps rebuffing me.” Isuzu pointed out.
“You keep saying you’ll “unlock the door to my heart” in the bath!” Ruka complained.
“Oh... Oh that’s a good line I’ll have to use.” Shiki chuckled.
“Hey, don’t steal my shtick!” Isuzu yelled.
Charlotta’s aura seemed to grow darker. “OtHeR wOmEn GeTtInG cLoSe To-”
“Well, if you’re Ruka’s friend, that makes us friends too!” Hibiki said, walking up and shaking Charlotta’s hand up and down rather vigorously. “I’m Hibiki Tachibana!”
Somehow, some way, Hibiki’s friendly and bright presence seemed to expel all negative aura around Charlotta. The girl’s expression lightened up significantly. “Derug...”
Shiki blinked. “Incredible. She managed to completely change Charlotta’s demeanor with a single handshake.”
“I don’t think I can even do that with my massages.” Isuzu added.
“Did she just... exorcise all the scary stuff out of her?” Ichigo asked, turning to Maria.
“That... I’m not sure.” Maria admitted.
“Well, Bikki’d make a great psychic, I can tell ya that.” Megumi chimed in.
“Grr!” Byakko roared as if saying the same.
“Heh.” Chris chuckled. “METANOIA...”
“Hibiki... I owe you a free concert.” Ruka smiled.
“All of our concerts are free.” Yuki reminded her.
“But how did you sense Charlotta?” Maria asked Tsubasa.
“Oh, I was trained by a my good friend, Ogawa.” Tsubasa explained. “He’s my manager that’s also a master of ninja techniques.”
“Ninja manager? Whoa.” Ruka was impressed.
“Did someone say ninja manager?!” Adelheid Kanzaki shouted from a nearby tree.
“Seriously? A ninja is your manager?” Ichigo blinked. “That’s... actually really cool.”
Evening
Squad 31-A and SONG had gotten together in the studio, as Ruka went through the various song samples.
“Hmm... you guys got a lot of rocking tunes here.” Ruka noted. “Gosh, I really don’t want to do this, but I need to do process of elimination style for which song we’ll play.”
“That’s entirely understandable.” Tsubasa said. “Not all of our musical styles will exactly fit yours. Not to mention the lack of certain instruments.”
“Yeah. I mean, we could make up for it using other ones, but it might be stretching things too far.” Ruka crossed her arms. “So by default we gotta cut out... Bikki, Basa and Mari-Mari’s songs.”
“Aw.” Hibiki looked a bit disappointed.
“Chrissey, and Kirishira’s songs might be easier to do since there’s a lot of similar instruments.” Ruka analyzed.
“Wait, why did you group us-” Shirabe started.
“What about one of their group songs?” Yuki suggested.
“Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.” Ruka scrolled through the options. “That way, everyone’s voice can be heard and stuff. We do got plenty of spare mics.”
“If that’s the case, can I make a suggestion?” Hibiki asked.
“Sure, go for it.” Ruka said.
Scrolling through her phone, Hibiki held it up and played the song in question.
“Ah... this one.” Tsubasa smiled.
“Oh... Oh!” Ruka smiled. “Yes! This is the type of song we can totally play! What do you say, girls?”
“It does seem a bit different from our normal songs, but I think we can pull it off.” Yuki agreed.
“Song sounds nice... I’m down.” Megumi flashed a thumbs-up.
“What a resonant melody...” Tsukasa closed her eyes, smiling.
“Yes...” Karen gently moved her head to the beat.
“I’m all for it!” Tama said.
“This is normally a seven singer song, but I think you guys can take Miku’s spot!” Hibiki said.
“We’ll take up the challenge.” Karen was ready to sing.
“Sorry to both Hibiki’s girlfriend and Yuki in particular that I’m taking this role.” Ruka held her hands up in apology.
“WHY ARE YOU APOLOGIZING TO ME SPECIFICALLY?!” Yuki screamed.
Night 1
With free time after a quick dinner of beef stroganoff (Hibiki brought up a song about boys not knowing and apparently the fact there doesn’t even need to be beef), Ruka walked out of the cafeteria, stretching her arms. Looking over, she saw Tsubasa sitting on a bench. “Yo, Basa.”
“Ruka.” Tsubasa smiled. “...you have some rice on your mouth.”
“Seriously?” Ruka ran a finger on her lips, seeing a piece stuck there. “Yeesh. Yukkie’s getting sloppy.”
“...can you clarify what that means before I get the wrong idea?” Tsubasa asked.
“Ah it’s nothing weird.” Ruka said. “Yukkie’s usually the one to notice if something’s off with my appearance. Like if I got a food stain on my shirt, or bad bed hair I didn’t comb properly.”
“She’s not a servant to you, I hope?” Tsubasa asked.
“She’s not a ninja manager like you explained, if that’s what you’re asking.” Ruka said, sitting down next to her. “So I gotta ask, are you nervous for tomorrow’s mission?”
“No.” Tsubasa said. “I’m confidant in my allies, with how we’ve been in countless battles before. It’s the same as you, is it?”
“Well... I did think that, but it’s on and off.” Ruka admitted. “Cause I do trust them, but... sometimes I get worried.”
“That’s the natural human reaction, I’d wager.” Tsubasa said. “Though are you worried at this moment in particular?”
“...Hey, Mona-nyan, Yuina-senpai and Ichigo mentioned you fighting like you’ve had a partner, right?” Ruka suddenly asked.
“You’re not trying to change the subject, are you?” Tsubasa asked.
“No. This is tied to it.” Ruka stood up. “You fine if I take you somewhere on base?”
Tsubasa stood up. “If it’ll help you take your doubts away, I’ll be glad to. I’d imagine any of my friends would do the same.”
Ruka and Tsubasa weren’t the only ones on a nightly excursion. Hibiki had taken Megumi to the clock tower, and they were looking out at the base and the land around it.
“Pretty great view, right?” Megumi smirked.
“Yeah, it’s amazing!” Hibiki nodded.
“Heh, just watch this.” Megumi held up her fingers, letting a few sparks shoot out like little fireworks.
“That’s so cool!” Hibiki cheered. “You’re really cool, Megumi!”
Megumi proudly put her hands on her hips, but it was a bit half-hearted. “Honestly, it’s kiddy stuff compared to what you’ve done, Hibiki.”
The smile slightly dropped from Hibiki’s face. “What do you mean? I thought you said you were a savior?”
Megumi leaned against the railing. “Thing is, I wasn’t always all for the Seraph Squadron. Stuff happened and... I left the team for a bit.”
“You did?”
“Mm.” Megumi admitted. “Ruka, Tama ‘n everyone else say it’s fine, but sometimes I think back to it. I don’t feel to proud about it since all of ‘em could keep fighting.”
“But you did come back, right?” Hibiki asked.
“Well, I’m here now.” Megumi said.
“Then I think that’s pretty savior-like that you were able to come back and help even after you thought you gave up!” Hibiki said.
“Hibiki...”
“It’s always been tough for me and the others too... but we always kept looking forward.” Hibiki said. “It was the people around you that helped bring you back here, right?
“Yeah... guess you’re right.” Megumi smiled. “You really know what to say to help lift people up, huh?”
“It took a lot of practice.” Hibiki admitted, thinking back to when she first started out.
“Still, thanks for saying it aloud.” Megumi said. “Helps push down any lingering doubts.”
“It’s alright, it’s going to be okay!” Hibiki gave a thumbs-up.
“You’re definitely savior material yourself, Hibiki.” Megumi chuckled, before she held up her hands. “Alright, let me do a special service! Your very own personal fireworks show! Let me know what ya wanna see!”
“Ooh! Make some flowers!” Hibiki suggested.
“Sparkly bouquet of flowers, coming right up!”
Yuki had accompanied Chris on her walk. They stopped just outside the airfield, looking out at all the parked helicopters.
“So why’d you want to bring me out here?” Yuki asked.
“Well, I figured we wouldn’t be overheard here.” Chris said.
“Not overheard? Why?” Yuki asked.
“Well, I saw how you, uh, blew up at the others teasing you.” Chris said. “I thought it’d be best to talk somewhere away from all that.”
“Ah, that.” Yuki blushed, fixing her glasses. “I’m used to the teasing now. It’s unfortunately now my bit with Ruka.”
“Trust me, I get that feeling.” Chris agreed. “But you do care about Ruka a lot, huh?”
“I... I do, yeah.” Yuki admitted.
“You said you saved her life and all that too... I think you’re doing a good job keeping her safe.” Chris said.
Yuki blinked, before stepping closer. “You want to talk about yourself a bit, don’t you?”
Normally Chris would get all defensive, but around a kindred spirit like Yuki, she didn’t feel the need to. “Yeah...”
“I’m all ears.” Yuki said. “I’ve spent most of my time venting to you. It’s only fair I do the same.”
“...I don’t want to get into too many details.” Chris said. “But... well, I lost my folks when I was a kid.”
“I... I’m sorry.”
“A lot of crap happened to me after that.” Chris sighed. “Took me a long time until SONG was able to really save me. But even with them being my new family, I never forgot what Mama and Papa wanted.”
“What would that be?” Yuki asked.
“They wanted their songs to help bring peace around the world.” Chris said. “Our songs aren’t exactly like theirs, but the ones you guys sing? It feels like the kind of songs my parents wanted to share to everyone. It’s like their mission is being continued here. It might be weird to say, but thanks for that.”
Yuki gently smiled. “I suppose that’s one way to see it. I’m glad you feel that way, Chris.”
“Honestly, I’m glad to have met you, Yuki.” Chris said. “You’re like, someone that gets me in every way.”
“I know a thing or two about losing people close to you.” Yuki admitted, thinking about how Orchid had fallen apart. “And the feeling’s mutual. I never thought I’d find a friend like you from another world.”
“Well, this friend of yours is rooting for you.” Chris held up a fist. “You’ll save this world, and get with Ruka.”
Instead of shouting at the mention of her and Ruka’s special relationship, Yuki chuckled and returned the fist bump. “Thanks, Chris.”
Maria and Tsukasa were on the roof of the dorms. The stars were sparkling above them.
“The stars are shining brighter compared to our world.” Maria noted.
“The Cancer invasion meant that there aren’t as many people to create light pollution.” Tsukasa said. “A lot of abandoned areas of the world have practically returned to nature.”
“I suppose once humanity starts rebuilding, they might have another chance to avoid similar mistakes.” Maria said.
“Well, I believe once proper Cancer cleanup is over, maybe. Though I’m not sure if we’ll avoid the same mistakes.” Tsukasa said.
“This Awakened version of you is far more pessimistic, isn’t she?” Maria asked.
“Heh, I suppose I am.” Tsukasa agreed. “After everything I have seen, it’s a bit difficult to keep a positive attitude.”
“Should I assume it’s tied to the normal you’s state?” Maria pieced together.
“It is.” Tsukasa said. “I’ll avoid indulging you with military secrets, but the loss of my mother greatly contributed to how I would normally act.”
“So you also lost family...”
““Also”?”
“For me, it was my younger sister.” Maria said. “She had the potential to become even stronger than me, but she died when we were young. She sacrificed herself to save me, Kirika and Shirabe.”
“It appears you had a noble sister.” Tsukasa said, watching Maria sit down on the bench. She blinked a few times when Maria patted down next to her. Following Maria’s direction, she sat down next to her... only to be surprised when Maria gently put an arm around her. “...Maria? What are you doing?”
“Even if you’re a bit harsher than your usual self, you’re still the same person at the end of the day.” Maria said. “So I felt you would appreciate some comfort.”
“That’s not-” Tsukasa was about to pull away, but Maria’s warm embrace was eating away at that idea. “I...”
“Shhh... It’s fine.” Maria whispered.
“I...” Tsukasa closed her eyes. For once, her more serious side decided to relax and let Maria comfort her. Thinking about her late mother, she quietly let her tears flow. They sat there in silence, and for a moment, Maria thought Tsukasa had fallen asleep. But she stirred, opening up her eyes. “What...?”
Maria glanced at Tsukasa’s face. The softer expression told her that Tsukasa had returned to her usual state.
“E-Eh?!” Tsukasa widened her eyes, realizing the position they were in. “Maria?! What’s-?! Was I crying? What is-?”
“You can relax a bit longer, Tsukasa.” Maria assured her.
“Ah... okay...” Tsukasa softly smiled. “This is nice...”
Shirabe and Kirika were in Squad 31-A’s dorm with Karen and Tama. They pulled out a board game and were killing time with it. It was one that the two duos were surprised to find existed in both worlds; Monopoly.
“I guess bankruptcy remains the same in both worlds, dess...” Kirika looked at her lack of properties.
“You don’t know the half of it!” Tama agreed, her house count being in the single digits.
Compared to them, Karen and Shirabe had a much wider control of the board. While Shirabe had invested in her spaces, Karen had more properties overall.
“I wanted to ask, now that we have the time.” Karen looked at Shirabe. “You explained that whole story about that Finé lady. And Kirika saved you, right?”
“Yep, dess!” Kirika nodded. “Though we were fighting...”
“You were fighting because you guys loved each other, so I think it balances out!” Tama said.
This caused the two to briefly blush, but their focus returned.
“Why do you ask?” Shirabe was curious about Karen’s question.
“So if she awakened... that would have been the end for you, right?” Karen asked. “Were you... afraid that you’d disappear?”
“I wasn’t because I never realized it until Kiri-chan really saved me.” Shirabe said. “Kiri-chan was the one that was scared since she thought Finé would awaken in her.”
“I kinda made dumb decisions because I thought it’d happen to me, dess.” Kirika admitted.
“But if it did happen...” Karen frowned.
“I don’t think she’d have wanted it either.” Shirabe said, rolling the dice. “After she met Hibiki-san, I think that changed her.”
“I... supposed that’s reassuring.” Karen said.
“I kinda feel left out...” Tama admitted.
“Well, you shouldn’t feel left out, dess.” Kirika patted her on the shoulder. “We gotta stick together, as the cheer-uppers, right?”
““Cheer-uppers”?” Shirabe parroted.
“That’s our job, dess!” Kirika said. “We make everyone happy by just being there!”
Karen smiled. “It does feel like that whenever Tama is with us. Is it the same with Kirika?”
Shirabe nodded, slight blush on her cheeks. “It’s always sunnier with Kiri-chan around.”
“Aw, Shirabe!” Kirika wrapped her arms around Shirabe in appreciation.
“Oh, it’s your turn by the way.” Karen said, seeing it was Kirika’s turn.
“Right!” Kirika grabbed the dice. “C’mon, give me a good roll, dess!”
Kirika rolled a one and a three. With a quick count, Kirika felt the dread creep up as she realized where she landed. Karen and Tama both saluted Kirika for the damage she was about to take.
“That’s my hotel space, Kiri-chan.” Shirabe said, holding out her hand. “Pay up.”
“Aw dess!” Kirika threw her money.
Night 2
Tsubasa wasn’t sure where Ruka was going to take her, but she didn’t expect a mortuary to be their stop. Ruka stopped by the altar, sitting on one of the stone benches.
“Hi Aoi. Kura. Hope I’m not bothering you two.” Ruka said.
Tsubasa looked around, seeing gravestones in the fields surrounding them. Ruka...
“A lot has happened since our last visit.” Ruka said. “We got these new friends from another world. They fight using the power of music! How cool is that?”
Tsubasa sat down next to Ruka.
“Honestly, of all of them I’d want to introduce you guys to Bikki.” Ruka smiled. “I think you’d get along super well with her, Aoi. And Kura, you’d have someone that’d really appreciate your rice.”
Tsubasa watched as Ruka continued to talk about the Symphogear-users. There was so much passion in her words, even if she wasn’t directly speaking to anyone. It was clear that Ruka thought a lot about these two.
Once Ruka had stopped, Tsubasa gently spoke up. “Ruka... these two you were speaking to... are they your fallen comrades?”
“...Erika Aoi was the leader of Squad 31-B, and Satomi Kura was a member of Squad 30-G.” Ruka said, looking out at the graves. “They... They were the first two people I lost here.”
“I see... 31-B and 30-G... those would be...”
“Ichigo and Yuina-senpai’s teams.” Ruka said. “Ichigo cared a lot for Aoi even if she didn’t always show it, and Mona-nyan... she didn’t realize that Kura loved her until it was too late.”
“So that’s why...” Tsubasa realized why those three could read her fighting style like that. They had understood her without any words.
“This is why I kinda wanted to ask if they were right about the partner thing.” Ruka said. “So if it’s not too private to ask-”
“Kanade Amou.”
Ruka turned to Tsubasa.
“Before I was partnered with Maria, I knew a girl named Kanade Amou.” Tsubasa said. “She was my first. My first friend, my first partner, everything. She was always there for me with a smile on her face. She actually reminds me quite a bit of you, Ruka.”
Ruka was surprised to her that, but knew there was more to the story. “And the reason she’s not with us...”
“At one of our concerts, our combined power wasn’t enough to stop the Noise, and Kanade sacrificed her life that day.” Tsubasa clenched her fists ever so slightly. Despite how long it had been, thinking back to it was still difficult. “Tachibana inherited her Gungnir in the aftermath. Kanade’s legacy lives on with her.”
Ruka really wanted to ask more details, but figured that she should stay listening.
“Your friends understood me quite well, as they’ve been through the same pain as me.” Tsubasa looked up at the stars. “Is that why you’re scared, Ruka?”
Ruka instead looked at the ground. “I... I don’t want to lose anyone else. Aoi was a really good friend, and Kura was a reliable senpai. I constantly wonder if I should’ve gotten to know them more... the more we could’ve hung out together. Become even better friends...”
“But you’re aware that this is the risk of being on the battlefield, correct?” Tsubasa asked. “The harsh reality is that not every battle will come out without casualties.”
“I know that, I know...” Ruka kicked at the ground. “It’s just... I’ve gotten so much stronger now. It makes me wonder... what if I was this strong back then? Could I have saved them?”
“That’s something I understand all too well.” Tsubasa looked out at the graves. “Some days I curse the weakness I once had... but I learned that it’s also my strength.”
“What do you mean?”
“Kanade... she wanted to teach me that I was more than just a weapon.” Tsubasa said. “She showed me so much, and that was only the beginning. Tachibana, Yukine, Maria, Tsukuyomi and Akatsuki. Them and all of my allies, showed me that a sentinel was more than a tool to protect humanity.”
“What are you trying to say?” Ruka asked.
“Your fallen allies... they wouldn’t want to drag you down in regret.” Tsubasa said. “They’d want to lift you to the future. If they were here now, what would they say?”
Thinking about it, Ruka pictured the two. Aoi would probably apologize for leaving everyone behind. Kura might have put on a haughty front, but she’d want everyone, especially Monaka, to keep moving forward. Both of them were caring in their own ways, the same way everyone in the Seraph Squad was.
“I’m not asking you to forget them, Ruka.” Tsubasa said. “Kanade Amou’s spirit still flows within me today and helps me look towards the future. I want to say your friends would do the same.”
Ruka looked down, noticing that a few Narbies were sleeping by her feet. A secret she couldn’t exactly share to Tsubasa or any of the others, but she brushed that aside. Tsubasa was right, Aoi and Kura wouldn’t want her to always sulk like this. She had seen 31-B and 30-G pushing forward... were their spirits lifting them too?
“You know just the right words to say, Basa.” Ruka smiled.
“I had some good teachers.” Tsubasa chuckled. “And I wasn’t exactly the best student.”
“Still, thanks for telling me.” Ruka said.
“I believe I should say the same in return.” Tsubasa looked out at all the graves. “But, one thing I can say for certain. Tomorrow’s operation, there will be no casualties.”
“Yeah, definitely.” A determined glint was in Ruka’s eyes as she held up a fist. “We’ll kick that thing’s butt for sure, and everyone’ll come back home together.”
Tsubasa nodded, tapping her fist against Ruka’s. “Of course.”
Notes:
We have a lot of character interactions here. Some of them are thematic, some I just wanted to use my favs from HBR, and some just turned out like this.
I'm uploading this a day after the second Angel Beats collab hit EN servers for HBR, and it makes me realize that I could def do more with this later down the line if I wanted to.
Final chapter is still a WIP, but I hope to get it done in time.
Feel free to leave a review. See you all next time.
Chapter 3: Day 3
Chapter Text
Early Morning
Surprising herself, Ruka was the first one of Squad 31-A to wake up this morning. Sitting up, she realized it was a few minutes before Yuki’s set alarm. Normally Ruka slept like a rock, but the upcoming mission was different compared to the norm. This one was an operation she absolutely refused to screw up in any way. Even with SONG helping them, she didn’t feel completely sure on the mission’s outcome. They didn’t really fight the Cancer-Noise hybrid, so it was completely new territory for them.
I won’t let this monster hurt anyone else. Ruka was determined. I swear it.
Morning
Squad 31-A arrived at the Commander’s office, where SONG was already there. Tsubasa and Maria were by Tezuka’s desk, looking through a MePad with her.
“Looks like you guys got here before us.” Ruka said.
“Well, we had a strategy meeting with Commander Tezuka and who we would bring to assist us.” Maria explained.
“30-G is unfortunately on another mission, which is a shame.” Tsubasa said.
“Dang, seriously? They’d make this too easy.” Ruka pouted.
“It’s better if it is too easy.” Yuki pointed out.
“We’ve discussed this among ourselves based on our interactions with them, but we decided on this team of six.” Maria said, going through the list. “Ichigo Minase of Squad 31-B, Ichiko and Isuzu Ohsima of Squad 31-E, Mion Yanagi and Inori Natsume of Squad 31-F and Maria de Angelis of Squad 31-X.”
“Hmm... yeah, I think that works.” Ruka agreed. “Icchi and Isuzuchhi work really well together, and so do Ichigo and Maririn. I haven’t seen Nagi and Inorin work too closely, but they’re like, the two serious members of Squad 31-F, so I think they got it. Plus, all six of them together makes a pretty balanced team.”
“Are we sure three leaders isn’t a bad idea?” Yuki asked.
“I mean, if they stick to duos they should be all good.” Ruka shrugged.
“Mm.” Tsubasa nodded. “A similar conclusion we made after discussing this with Commander Tezuka.”
“You will need the extra assistance.” Tezuka said. “We’ve received reports that activity has increased on the mountain.”
“Increased? What do you mean?” Yuki asked.
“The reports of Cancer have increased, as have the unknown enemy that we determined to be the Noise.” Tezuka said.
“Increased? We got more of ‘em now?” Megumi asked.
“That appears to be the situation, but we cannot confirm it.” Tezuka said. “It is another purpose of this mission.”
“Then we can’t waste any more time.” Maria said. “We’ll deploy immediately!”
“Right, let’s go, everyone!” Ruka nodded.
“Yeah!”
Period 1
The three teams had deployed from the helicopter. The forest was much louder, the sound of Noise and Cancer activity having skyrocketed.
“Yeesh. Sounds like a party.” Ichigo crossed her arms.
“I’ll kill them.” Maria declared.
Isuzu rolled her eyes, before turning to her sister. “What’s the plan?”
“We’re here as support, so we’ll be following Ruka’s lead.” Ichiko said.
“Indeed.” Yanagi nodded. “We’re awaiting your orders.”
Inori said nothing, but her silence told Ruka she was ready to go.
“Alright. While the Cancer aren’t gonna be a problem for us, the Noise are pretty messed up.” Ruka said. “We can take them down no problem, but if at any point your shield is down; retreat at all costs.”
“Why?” Isuzu asked.
“Contact with the Noise without any sort of protection will induce instant carbonization.” Maria explained.
This surprised the support team, but they steeled themselves for the battle to come. The ground trembled and the trees shook.
“Here they come!” Megumi shouted.
The Seraph Squadron summoned their weapons, while the Symphogears transformed. Ruka, Tsubasa and Inori drew their blades and rushed forward. With the blink of an eye, they had cut down several Noise and Cancer with ease.
Chris went back to back with Yuki and Ichigo, as the Cancer surrounded the three. Taking aim with their guns, they sprayed widely, shooting in all directions at the aliens. Their bullets peppered the entire area surrounding them, creating a wide area raining with gunfire.
Hibiki and Megumi were rushing forward, their heavy strikes smashing through the enemy with ease. Any time the Noise got in close, Ichiko’s weapon flew in to defend them. A perfect mix of offence and defence as they tore through enemy lines.
Both Marias brought out their blades as the thinned out enemy lines. The Maria with a Symphogear would use her whipsword to ensnare foes, letting the Maria with a Seraphim Weapon swing down her massive blade to smash through their armor. Tsukasa took out anything flying in from above, picking them off one by one.
Another group of Noise were ripped apart, as the scythe pair of Kirika and Isuzu shredded through with viscous force. They hooked in any armoured Cancer and dragged them in close for Tama to drive her blade through.
Yanagi aimed and fired into dispersed crowds of foes. Anything her bullets failed to fell, Shirabe and Karrie were there to pick off the remainders. The familiar saw-scythe combo was unstoppable.
“We’re making good time here!” Ruka slashed through another. “We’ll have these chumps cleaned up in a flash!”
“But until we take care of the one in control, we won’t be making any further progress.” Maria ensnared a Cancer, before tearing it apart with her blades.
“There’s more of the Cancer coming too.” Ichiko said, looking up the hill to see another swarm arrive.
“Then one proposes some of us stay behind as a diversion.” Yanagi suggested. “We have had no issue with these monsters, and it doesn’t seem likely we’ll continue to.”
“I’ll kill them.” Maria stabbed her sword into the dirt.
“Very well. We’ll leave them to you.” Tsubasa nodded.
“Yeah, go for it!” Ichigo slammed her Seraph’s blunt end into a Cancer, before aiming behind herself and shooting a Noise without looking. “We’ll keep ‘em here!”
“We’re counting on you!” Isuzu called, using her scythe to drag a Noise in. Inori didn’t say anything, as she cut through it, but she gave a small affirming nod.
“Thank you!” Hibiki gave them a thumbs-up, as the Symphogears and Squad 31-A ran into the deeper horde.
Period 3
The team of 12 arrived at the cliff face again. Looking down, they saw all the Noise and Cancer, but the large fusion between the two was nowhere to be seen.
“Huh? Where’s the big guy?” Megumi looked around.
As if to answer her question, the ground started to tremor. The land beneath their feet crumbled as they all slid into the canyon. Breaking through the canyon wall was the Noise-Cancer fusion, larger than they had last seen.
“Whoa?! What happened here?!” Ruka widened her eyes.
“It appears that the Noise-Cancer fusion has combined itself even further with even more, increasing its size significantly.” Maria gripped her blade.
“Then we’ll cut it down to size! Kyeheheh!” Karrie declared.
“Scythe power, dess!” Kirika agreed.
The two jumped up and brought down their weapons, hooking onto each side of the Noise-Cancer and slicing through. Though to their shock, the slashes started healing almost instantly. It swung out its tendrils at the two, but Maria swung out her whip-sword, intercepting.
“Our normal tactics might not work on this.” Maria noted, as she sliced through the tendril. It started healing up again, as if her attack failed to do anything. “Any ideas?”
“Maybe if we hit it hard enough, it won’t get back up!” Megumi shouted. “C’mon, Bikki!”
“Right!” Hibiki lept onto the flat edge of Megumi’s blade, as the pink-haired girl swung forward, launching Hibiki. The Gungnir girl drew her fist back before tearing straight through the Noise-Cancer with an almighty strike. It was enough to make it stagger, but it was still regenerating from the attack.
“Not even Tachibana’s power works?” Tsubasa frowned, gripping her blade.
Ruka narrowed her eyes. Hibiki’s punch had definitely done a lot of damage. Looking closer, she noticed the Noise-Cancer was glowing blue as it healed up. “Looks like the Cancer barrier combined with the Noise’s... weird body thing. Might be why it’s healing so fast.”
“So what’s your idea, Ruka?” Yuki asked.
“We just need to keep hitting it until it gets overtaxed. Once we see the opening, we hit it hard.” Ruka said. “Basa, can I get you to back me up?”
“My sword is yours.” Tsubasa nodded.
“Alright guys, keep it up!” Ruka called, before holding up a sword and shouting orders. “Yukkie, Tsukassie and Chrissey, provide covering fire! Cappy, Mari-mari, Kiri and Shira, slow it down! Megumin, Karerin and Bikki, keep it busy!”
“Roger!”
All of them ran in, attacking from every angle. The Noise-Cancer shot out tendrils, but they were all either sliced or dodged. Hibiki, Megumi and Karrie ran in, delivering heavy strikes that staggered the massive creature. Flying in for smaller strikes, Maria, Kirika, Shirabe and Tama’s slashes prevented the Noise-Cancer from recovering so quickly. Any attempt the Noise-Cancer tried for swiping at them was interrupted with Chris, Yuki and Tsukasa firing a storm of bullets.
“Just a bit more...” Ruka gripped her blades.
Tsubasa stepped up, staying near Ruka. “On your mark.”
“Yeah. Almost there...” Ruka narrowed her eyes.
The resounding crack told her the Noise-Cancer’s shields had shattered.
“Now!” Ruka shouted. “Finish it!”
The two teams jumped at the monster from all angles, but it steadied itself. It stomped on the ground before roaring, the loud sudden sound throwing them all off. The blast of sound knocked them all back. Ruka widened her eyes, dropping one of her blades from the shockwave.
Crap! Sweat fell down her brow. Not again!
Tsubasa kicked off the cliff and flipped in the air, grabbing Ruka’s sword. “Ruka!”
She swung a leg out, launching a blade towards her. Widening her eyes, Ruka caught the sword. It morphed, growing a pair of boosters on the cross-guard. “Whoa whoa whoa!”
It pulled Ruka skyward, and Tsubasa kicked off the Noise-Cancer to join her. “Keep a strong grip on the blade, Ruka!”
“You got it!”
The two dropped from the sky, their their eyes on the target. “Haaaaaaaaaah!”
Holding the pairs of blades, the two slashed down with four vertical strikes. There was silence as they landed on the ground. The Noise-Cancer was frozen as the faded blue cracks grew brighter. It briefly split into five vertical pieces before dispersing completely into Carbon.
There was silence, as if they were worried it’s spring up again. Five seconds... ten seconds...
“Is it... dead?” Tama asked.
Yuki pulled out her mePad, sending a message to the other team. She got a response in a few seconds. “They said that the Noise have slowed down their activity and stopped, leaving the Cancer easy targets to wipe out.”
“So... we did it, dess?” Kirika asked.
“Yeah.” Yuki smiled. “Mission complete.”
“Hah!” Chris shouldered her crossbow. “That fusion freak didn’t know who he was dealing with!”
“Damn right!” Megumi fist-pumped.
“C’mon, that’s it?!” Karrie shouted. “I wanted more from that slimy bastard!”
“Calm down.” Shirabe said. “We finished what we came to do.”
Maria nodded. “We should return to base. I’m sure your Commander will want to hear of this.”
“Yeah.” Ruka watched as the sword Tsubasa tossed her dispersed. Tsubasa returned her other blade to her. “Awesome move, Basa.”
“I’m not sure what came over me.” Tsubasa admitted. “But it worked out in the end.”
“Sure did.” Ruka grinned, holding up a hand. “Up top, Basa!”
Tsubasa chuckled as she returned the hi-five.
After School
Surprising the returning team was that several Seraph Squadron members were waiting for them at the heliport.
“Huh?” Ichigo blinked. “What are you guys all doing here?”
“Waiting for you, nya.” Sumomo said.
“We heard that the mission was a success.” Kanata said. “So we figured we’d greet you all when you come back.”
“One is humbled by this gesture.” Yanagi smiled.
“And Saku-chan’s here too, huh?” Ruka looked at a tall pink-haired girl carrying a crystal ball.
“I had a prediction you’d all return alive.” Seira Sakuraba of Squad 31-C smiled.
Why doesn’t that exactly assure me? Tsubasa frowned. She sounds a bit like when Phara would say something foreboding.
“Well, we’ll accept the hero’s welcome later.” Ruka said. “We gotta report back to the commander. And then...”
Tsubasa smiled. “It’s almost time, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. Time for some last minute tweaks before we rock this joint!” Ruka grinned.
Arriving in Tezuka’s office, the teams reported back from their mission.
“So this creature has been defeated. Good work.” Tezuka fixed her hat. “Thank you for your assistance, SONG.”
“The least we could do.” Tsubasa nodded.
“The makeshift team is dismissed. I have a few things to discuss with the other two teams.” Tezuka said.
Ichigo, Ichiko and Yanagi all nodded, before leaving with Isuzu, Natsume and Maria.
“I should let you know that Higuchi has spent nearly all her time analyzing Gjallarhorn.” Tezuka said. “She said she hasn’t returned with any new results, but did say that nothing about it has changed.”
“Have you found a way to store Gjallarhorn?” Tsubasa asked. “If there’s any future incidents, it would be convenient for us to arrive here instead of in the wilderness.”
“We’ve been working on building a chamber for it, and any other potential similar finds.” Tezuka said. “It should be ready in a few hours.”
“Then it’s almost time for us to return home.” Maria said.
“But we got one last thing to do!” Hibiki grinned.
“Yeah, a few hours is plenty of time!” Megumi said.
“Let’s make this a great goodbye concert.” Karen said.
“But saying goodbye is sad, dess.” Kirika murmured.
“Then we’ll make it a happy occasion, Kiri.” Ruka assured her. “Get ready girls!”
Evening
Ruka was sitting down, fine-tuning her guitar. Tsubasa had finished with the mic assignments for everyone, while also planning out spots on the stage for everyone with Maria. With a group of 12, it’d be a bit crowded, so they arranged things in a way to avoid any accidents.
“Ruka.”
Looking up, Ruka saw Yuina walk over. “Oh hey Yuina-senpai! You’re just in time for the song!”
“Glad to hear.” She said. “I was a bit concerned when my squad was unable to lend our assistance to your mission, but I’m glad to see that my fears were unfounded.”
“We managed fine.” Tsubasa stepped over. “But it’s good to hear your worries.”
“The Commander told me that you’ll be leaving tonight.” Yuina said. “Ogasahara and Tsukishiro mentioned they’re a bit disappointed they won’t be able to spar with you again.”
“I would like to trade swords with them once more, but we must head back soon.” Tsubasa said. “But if the opportunity arises, I’ll gladly spar with them again.”
“I see.” Yuina smiled. “I’ll take my seat now and get ready for the performance. Give Maria my regards.”
“I will.” Tsubasa nodded, holding her arm forward.
With one final handshake, Yuina returned to her squad.
“Alright, we’re all good to go!” Megumi called.
“Everyone’s in position.” Shirabe added.
“It’s time!” Tama looked eager.
“Time to sing, dess!” Kirika grinned.
Tsukasa and Maria nodded to show they were ready, while Chris and Yuki each flashed a thumbs-up. Tsubasa and Ruka took their spots at the front, Karen between them. Ruka tapped the mic to get everyone’s attention.
“Alright folks!” Ruka shouted. “Thanks for coming out! But before we get into the song, let’s give a bit cheer for our new friends from SONG!”
Hibiki smiled. “Is this how it’s like on the stage, Tsubasa-san?”
“Always.” Tsuabsa chuckled.
“Now for a special number!” Ruka called. “Listen to our song, “Ashita e no Flügel”!”
(Insert Ashita e no Flügel by Aoi Yūki, Nana Mizuki, Ayahi Takagaki, Yōko Hikasa, Yoshino Nanjō, Ai Kayano and Yuka Iguchi)
Ruka was the first one to start playing, as the others backed her up. With all the guest vocals assisting today, she’d have to bring her A-Game. Luckily, SONG was there to support her and Karen.
We want to always be proud
Of the yesterdays that had been
Leading us
To this day today
We'll never forget the melodies
That we'd come to be
Assembling
For this day today
Even if
People hurt
Others when
They touch one another
That's why
We'll walk on
Vowing to
Never forget how it feels when we connect our hands
And so
Our dreams
Bloom forth
As we head to the end of a world we've never seen before…
Yes, just believe
We'll create history with a light unknown to even the gods
And we'll never run away
From living our lives
As we aim for the future!
Yes, just believe
On this day, a thousand years from now
The things precious to people will fly
We learned that's what "song" is
So let's live on
Without being afraid of ending this story of ours!
Ruka could feel everyone’s energy. Hearing all the voices together in harmony after only a small amount of practice was breathtaking. This was the kind of music she lived for.
Tsubasa looked into the crowd, seeing the cheers as they sang. She could spot all the members of the Seraph Squadron they had met prior, showing their support whether vocally or silent.
We want to convey
With this song what it means to
Resound together
And flap our wings
We want to entrust
Our testimony to someone else
Again, and
Run alongside them
People will
Always
Keep on
Growing up with other people
And they'll keep
Wanting to
Create and
Nurture dreams with each other across generations
And so
We spin together
This moment…
As we head to the end of a world we've never seen before…
Yes, just believe
The answer to music is still unable to be found
But, tomorrow
We'll be another step
Closer to finding that answer
Yes, just believe
Even when we pass on the baton
And become the ones who push peoples' backs, we'll wish
For the new era to already
Seem to be right ahead
So that someone can search for that answer
As the song started to slow down, Ruka felt the lower energy tune of the song. The others were still ready to finish, so the song was about to enter the last stretch.
She thought she saw an orange feather, but it disappeared from her view once she blinked. Time for the finale.
Even if
People hurt
Others when
They touch one another
The feeling of
When we connect
Our hands will
Always be able to say that, in the end, love won't lose
And so
Our dreams
Bloom forth
As we head to the end of a world we've never seen before…
Yes, just believe
We'll create history with a light unknown to even the gods
And we'll never run away
From living our lives
As we aim for the future!
Yes, just believe
On this day, a thousand years from now
The things precious to people will fly
We learned that's what "song" is
So let's live on
Without being afraid of ending this story of ours!
That will become the wind of our next beginning!!
With one final powerful strum, She is Legend and their guest singers finished the song to a standing ovation. Ruka raised a hand, and Tsubasa met it with a hi-five.
Late Night
Squad 31-A was the only one present in the newly made Gjallarhorn chamber. Higuchi of Squad 31-B was keeping an eye on things from an observation room, and Ruka swore she heard irritated muttering from her even though the glass window. Guess Gjallarhorn was more interesting than she initially believed.
The Symphogears had already donned their armor, Gjallarhorn slightly glowing as they stood nearby.
“So, this is it, huh?” Ruka said.
“Mm.” Maria nodded. “We have people waiting for us to come home.”
“But I don’t wanna say bye!” Ruka pouted. “No way, no way!”
“What are you, four?” Yuki sighed. “But I suppose goodbye is a bit hard to say.”
“Yeah.” Chris agreed. “We only knew you girls a few days, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget any of you, or anyone else we met from the Seraph Squadron.”
“Well, they’re our friends no matter what!” Hibiki said. “I think one day we’ll see each other again!”
“Always the optimist, aren’t you?” Chris chuckled.
“As long as Gjallarhorn remains, we do have a way to return here.” Tsubasa reminded them. “Like Tachibana, I’ll choose to believe we’ll encounter one-another once more.”
The mood seemed to lighten up as the hope of another meeting was in their minds.
“As long as the sea is around, I think we’ll meet again, Kirika!” Tama said.
“I don’t get what you’re saying, but I agree, dess!” Kirika said. “It was great meeting you, Tama, dess!”
“You and Karrie better stay safe.” Shirabe said.
“We promise.” Karen gently took Shiabe’s hand into her own. “Karrie says the same to you.”
“I’m thankful for everything you’ve done for us, Maria.” Tsukasa bowed her head.
“Likewise, I’m thankful for you and your squad’s hospitality.” Maria said. “Don’t overwork yourself, alright?”
“Get home safe, Chris.” Yuki held out her hand. “It was good to meet someone that understands what I go through.”
“Back at ya.” Chris accepted the handshake. “Keep your head up, yeah? You’re the one keeping these dummies in line.”
Hibiki and Megumi bumped fists. Megumi grinned. “Ya better keep that smile on your face for the next time we see each-other, aight?”
“I will!” Hibiki smiled. “And I know you’ll become a saviour like you want!”
This left Ruka and Tsubasa, the two singers staring at one another.
“Honestly, with everything I said earlier, I’m not too sure what to say to you specifically.” Tsubasa admitted.
“I don’t think you got to.” Ruka said. “You taught me a lot, and I’ll make sure to keep it in mind for the future.”
“Never lose your love of songs, Ruka. And never forget that we’re comrades even across worlds.” Tsubasa said.
Smiling, Ruka raised her arm, as Tsubasa tapped her wrist against hers. “Catch you later, Basa.”
The Symphogears went over next to Gjallarhorn, as the relic grew brighter. Hibiki kept waving until the light covered the entire room. “I know you guys can save your world!”
Squad 31-A lowered their arms as the blinding light faded. They were the only six left as Gjallarhorn’s glow faded.
“They’ve left...” Tsukasa said.
“I already miss them!” Tama shouted.
“Normally I’d say it’s only been a few seconds, but I get it.” Yuki said.
“Well, then we’d better heed their words.” Karen said.
“Yeah.” Megumi remembered what Hibiki said. “We will.”
Ruka was the only one not to say anything, as she stared at Gjallarhorn. We’ll make you guys proud, so we can see you again without the fate of the world on our shoulders.
-Epilogue-
A few days had passed since SONG had left. Squad 31-A had been given a few days off after taking down the Noise-Cancer. They didn’t have any real plans for the day, so they were playing cards in their room for now.
“You know, I never asked, Ruka.” Tama said as she shuffled the cards. “What was it like to use Tsubasa’s sword?”
“Basa’s sword?” Ruka put a hand under her chin. “It was pretty dang cool. It was different from my own swords, almost... techno-like?”
“You know, it makes me wonder how it would be if we wore their Symphogears.” Tsukasa admitted.
The girls all took a moment to think. Tama put down the cards, thinking of Kirika’s Igalima. “Eh, I don’t think I’d rock the green. And scythes aren’t my style.”
“Me with Shirabe’s Shul Shagana... maybe it would work?” Karen said. “I think Karrie liked her buzzsaws.”
“I... I think I might cause issues by using Maria’s Airgetlam.” Tsukasa admitted, thinking about how the weapon had various forms. “But maybe if it was the other me...”
“If I was using Chris’ Ichaival-” Yuki started blushing, remembering the design. “Actually, I’m not going to think about it. ...I do think the firearm specialty would help, though.”
“Me with Hibiki’s Gungnir, huh?” Megumi raised her fists, making a few jabs. “I bet I’d be a total badass if I was pummelling the Cancer with my fists.”
“And as for me... I don’t think much’d change if I had Tsubasa’s Ame-no-Habakiri.” Ruka said. “But more swords would be cool.”
Thinking about their friends’ transformations got them thinking about the SONG again.
“You guys think we’ll see them again?” Ruka asked.
“They did make the promise.” Megumi said. “I think I’ll believe it.”
“Maybe if there’s another big threat they’ll show up again.” Tsukasa suggested.
“Do NOT jynx us.” Yuki said. “If I were to meet Chris again, I’d want it to be on a less stressful terms.”
“Yeah, same here.” Ruka said. “Honestly, I kinda want to meet all the others from their world too some time. Like, Hibiki mentioned a girlfriend, her teacher and so many others. I’m kinda curious how their world was able to fight back against the Noise and all the Gods and stuff.”
“But for now we need to focus on fighting back the Cancer on our world.” Yuki said.
“Yeah.” Ruka nodded. “When all the fighting’s over... I’m sure we’ll see them all again. So let’s do our best, everyone!”
She put her hand forward, and the rest of her team placed their hand over hers. Hands connected in a way that’d make Hibiki proud.
It was a small moment, but this hope encouraged them to continue fighting for their world.
Another reason to not give up on life, in a world that burned red.
