NEW YORK POST
Andrei Rozanov: 'Ilya was very quick to abandon us when his career took off'
By Eloise Ferguson
One of Russia’s most outspoken socialites isn’t backing down from calling out his NHL-golden-boy brother, and he doesn’t care who’s offended.
“Father always wanted him to play in the KHL, but he refused.” The 38-year-old told The Post in an exclusive sit-down. “Ilya has always been… impulsive, even when we were boys. It pains us to see him being called a hero of hockey while he keeps refusing to support the people who raised him.”
“My brother Ilya, he let money and pride take his brain”, Rozanov went on. “As soon as the NHL came knocking, he was gone like the wind. What a shame he didn’t stay in Russia. He could have been a great man here.”
The eldest son of the late high-ranking Russian officer Grigori Rozanov isn’t shy about blasting his wayward sibling.
“Ilya has always had issues with right and wrong,” he said sharply, “He does not care for our family. The last time I saw him was years ago, at the funeral for our beloved father. He has not met my son. He has not met my wife. Nothing.”
Ilya Rozanov, who is married to Ottawa Centaurs teammate and former Montreal Voyageurs captain Shane Hollander, has repeatedly hinted to the press that his marriage is the reason he “cannot safely return” to Russia.
But when The Post pressed Andrei on whether he’s ever met his brother’s husband, he didn’t miss a beat.
“I do not know this boy,” he said, dismissively. “I do not know what Ilya wants with him. But Ilya always likes to spit on tradition. Our expectations for him were always low, but this is a shocking lack of respect to his real family, to the people who have given him everything he has.”
Speaking to The Post over a video call from his glass-walled penthouse in the center of Moscow, Rozanov opened up about their childhood bond after the early death of their mother, Irina. A bond, he claims, Ilya has completely abandoned.
And when talk turned to the Irina Foundation, the mental-health charity Ilya and his husband founded, Rozanov’s tone hardened instantly.
“Our mother Irina, she was not depressed. She was never mentally sick”, he snapped. “Even the suggestion is an insult. Her death was nothing more than a tragic accident. Ilya goes to unbelievable lengths to rewrite our life, our mother, everything. He is trying to twist this into some Western fairytale to go along with his fancy new life.”

Russian socialite Andrei Rozanov is reportedly under investigation by Russian authorities after millions of dollars go missing in alleged fraud scheme. This comes days after his controversial interview criticising his NHL-superstar brother nyti.ms/3X9BUD45
NEW YORK TIMES
The Andrei Rozanov Files: NHL-Superstar's Brother's Cultural Foundation Under Criminal Review
By Daria Lobanova
MOSCOW — The Russian Ministry of Culture confirmed late Friday that it has opened a formal investigation into the Rozanov Cultural Foundation, a high-profile nonprofit founded by the late Russian Senior Police General Grigori Rozanov and chaired by his son, Moscow socialite Andrei Rozanov, who also used to be active in the Russian police force. The investigation follows a damning independent audit that alleges large-scale financial misconduct, falsified records, and the diversion of more than a billion rubles in both donor and state funds.
According to the 147-page audit, obtained exclusively by The Moscow Times, the foundation, which was long touted as a champion of the preservation of Russian arts and culture, allegedly spent less than six percent of its operating budget on cultural programs. The remaining funds, as claimed by auditors, were routed through a complex network of shell companies and fake consulting entities tied to Rozanov and his close associates.
The inquiry centers on roughly 1.6 billion rubles (approximately $19.8 million) of unaccounted expenditures.
-
Amongst the most striking findings The Moscow Times could unearth were ₽41 million (approximately $509K) labeled as “historical restoration services”. This money was apparently directly paid to a luxury interior design firm that worked exclusively on Rozanov’s penthouse in Moscow’s city center.
More than ₽120 million (approximately $1.5 million) was rerouted to a consulting agency registered in Cyprus. This agency, according to corporate filings, had no real employees and lists Rozanov’s wife as its only director.
Several more frivolous purchases were also exposed: a modified Rolls Royce Phantom featuring custom embroidered seats with Rozanov’s initials and vanity license plates was purchased under the category “mobile exhibition transport”, gold-plated mirrors and toilet seats were selected under “sanitation support” and a gold-plated espresso machine and a collection of expensive Swiss watches were on record as “artifacts of European craftsmanship”.
Dozens of invoices bear signatures that handwriting analysts have identified as “highly likely forged”.
“These cannot be explained as simple accounting irregularities”, said Elena Jacobs, a former anti-corruption prosecutor advising the NYPD. “This is one of the most blatant cases of high-scale, intentional fraud we have seen in recent years.”
Russian sources close to the case claim that the investigation began after a newly hired junior accountant grew concerned about unverifiable expenditures. The accountant, whose identity is being withheld for safety reasons, resigned late November following alleged threats from Rozanov and his inner circle.
-
The Rozanov Cultural Foundation, which was founded in 2016, quickly became a fixture in elite circles. Donors included oligarchs, state ministries, celebrities and high-profile European patrons.
The Foundation’s annual “Brown Bear Gala” held this past June, reportedly cost ₽26 million (approximately $322K) to stage, including a champagne fountain valued at nearly ₽1.8 million (approximately $22K), paid for with a Foundation credit card.
The Ministry of Culture has temporarily seized control of the Rozanov Cultural Foundation, citing “urgent need to protect public assets”. Several of Rozanov’s personal accounts have also been frozen pending review.
-
Rozanov was reached for comment at his residence by The Moscow Times, but dismissed the allegations as “a disgusting political smear orchestrated by Western European-influenced interests”. When asked for clarification about his custom Rolls Royce, which featured prominently on his social media, Rozanov ended the call.
His wife, Yelizaveta Sokolova-Rozonova, declined to comment but has since deleted numerous photographs of the couple’s penthouse and lavish events from her social media accounts.
-
The scandal comes only days after Rozanov gave a viral interview to the New York Post, in which he sharply criticized his younger brother, NHL-player Ilya Rozanov, accusing him of impulsiveness, betraying tradition and abandoning the family.
Online speculation has intensified regarding whether the timing of the investigation is coincidental. Officials declined to comment on any connection.
When asked whether he believed Ilya Rozanov tipped off authorities, a Ministry of Culture spokesperson replied, “No. Our investigation is evidence-based".
Ilya Rozanov, his representative or his team could not be reached for comment.
