Work Text:
Nobody saw it coming.
But nobody was entirely surprised, either.
Everybody loved Luke. He was the one that greeted them when they arrived at camp. He was the one the one that made them feel welcome. He taught them how to fight and how to survive.
They all saw him change.
It was small at first, tiny little things that nobody paid any mind to.
And the changes stayed tiny, but they kept happening.
Luke Castellan had never been the happiest person but no demigod could say they'd ever seen him angry.
Not at them, at least.
Annabeth watched with worry. His brothers watched with caution. His campers watched with sadness.
What could they do? They were children, he was the head counselor. He was in charge, and when they asked, he simply smiled.
When Luke tried to murder the newest camper no one could say they were surprised.
After all, even tiny things built up into something huge over time.
Nobody expected it to happen, but nobody was shocked.
There were denials and protests, righteous anger, but deep down everyone knew.
They hadn't seen it coming.
Noticed, but not seen.
Maybe if they had seen, this would've never happened.

Your writing hits hard with how quietly Luke changes over time. The sadness in the camp’s reactions feels real and human. You capture the heartbreak without ever overexplaining. What made you choose this slow-build style for his downfall? (Guest) Thu 04 Dec 2025 09:11PM UTC
