Hey, Soulmate

Summary:

On your 17th birthday, words appear on your wrist: the first words your soulmate says to you since gaining the mark. For a "loser" like Scott McCall, he's feeling like he might never meet his soulmate with such a cliche phrase on his wrist.

Chapter 1: Soulmark Curse

Notes:

Birthday accuracy will not be accurate (eg. Stiles has a mark even though he might technically be younger than Scott in canon i can’t remember nor do i care)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

No one really knew why or how it happened. Some speculated that it was supernatural, some spiritual, and some kids even thought it was an adult sneaking into their rooms and writing it on with sharpie.

However, one thing stays the same: everyone on their 17th birthday wakes up with words scrawled on their wrist, in their soulmates handwriting. The words were supposed to be the first words their soulmate says to them (after gaining the mark).

For the “loser,” Scott McCall, he woke up with the simplest words on his wrist. “Happy birthday, Scotty” is what it reads.

The day went by too quickly, for someone who assumed he’d meet his soulmate the same day he gained his mark. His mom said happy birthday, hugged him and cooed about how she’s “getting old.”

Then at school, Stiles ran up and practically jumped on Scott’s back. Scott yelled out “Dude!” but didn’t dare drop the other boy. Stiles’ first words to Scott were the same as the ones on his wrist.

Scott flinched and grabbed his best friends’ wrist, and let out a breath of relief as he saw that Stiles’ mark said “Ew, loser.” Good. His best friend that he saw like a brother isn’t his soulmate.

”Definitely Lydia. I just…haven’t gotten a chance to talk to her yet,” Stiles mumbled, refusing to meet Scott’s gaze.

”Nah, man, you’re just a pussy,” he replied, shoving Stiles’ wrist away and laughing as they walk to class.

They chattered through the halls, until a group of girls pass them, with two of them being Lydia Martin and Allison Argent. The target of the two “losers” affection.

Stiles chooses now to be the perfect opportunity to see if Lydia is his soulmate. “Hey, Lydia! Your hair looks wonderful today,” he compliments.

”Ew, loser,” she replies, giving him a look before turning back to her friends with a giggle. Stiles snaps his head over to Scott, smacking his best bud’s bicep.

Allison, however, smiles and waves shyly, her free hand tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

”Dude!” Stiles shrieks, grinning like a mad man on steroids, “she’s my soulmate! Now I just gotta wait until she gets her mark next month, and she will be mine!” he declares.

After School

The final bell rings out, and Scott can already feel the exhaustion creeping into his muscles and eyes. Six hours of smiling and thanking people as they wish him a happy birthday, hearing that nickname from his close friends was enough to send him off the deep end. He would hear that phrase, “Happy birthday, Scotty,” and each time, he was disappointed as the words on their wrist didn’t fade away, nor match what he had replied.

It was the last birthday-related conversation that really sent him for a fucking loop.

He was about to get into Stiles’ Jeep, when a voice cuts through. “Stiles!” the voice calls.

Scott turns and sees Isaac running over, grabbing Stiles’ shoulder and shoving a textbook in his hands, “Your dumb ass forgot this in class…again.” However, once Isaac catches a glimpse at Scott, he smiles, softer this time.

”Happy birthday, Scotty,” he congratulates, tipping an imaginary hat.

”Thanks, Izzy…means a lot from you.”

There’s a silence, before Isaac attempts to be subtle as he glances at his own wrist and then to Scott’s. He walks over, getting in Scott’s personal space and grabbing his wrist, “No way…” he whispers.

The words on both of their wrists slowly start to vanish, the sign that they had found their soulmate.

Isaac looks up at Scott, his smile softening as his thumb brushes over the birthday boys’ pulse point, ”We’re soulmates…”

Oh fuck. This is not what Scott was expecting when he woke up this morning.
