Chapter 1: ever on alert

Chapter Text

Oh heck no. No hecking way! Stephanie Lauter was pregnant! She had to be why would she be sick this morning if she wasn't? She didn't have to worry though. She might be intimidated by the consequences of her sins but Grace Chasity knew just what to do! She'll find a trusted adult who can help Steph deal with her surprise and she'll make sure that everyone knows about it, that way Steph will have a huge support system. After all what are friends for? Grace rushed through the halls of Hatchetfield High carefully reviewing her plan and thinking of how to execute it perfectly. The first step is to find the perfect person to tell. Who would be best to help Steph? As she looked for the perfect person Grace paid little attention to her steps as she moved forward. She was making an important plan and God would understand and guide her feet for her. But God must have been busy at that moment. She suddenly felt herself slipping on the ground. Her reflexes weren't fast enough to catch herself, so she was fudged! As she hit the ground she felt a sharp pain and heard a pop in her ankle. She looked up and saw everyone pass her by in the hallway, some even trying to hide a chuckle at seeing the nerdiest prude of them all stuck on the ground. Grace didn't have many friends outside of her church. It seemed people were just intimidated by how holy she was. That's why she needed to help Steph! Steph was always nice to Grace, she never laughed at her, and sometimes she would even wave to Grace in the hallway sometimes! No other kids her age really did that for her. Well except for one other person at Hatchetfield High.

Ahhh, this school is the perfect domain for an 18 year old boy to have total control over! After all, the nerds simply needed someone to keep their asses in check. They cannot be out stumbling in the halls thinking that they were worth shit. Max was worth something. He was the star quarterback, the most popular boy in school and he's a fucking Jägerman! He has to be worth something. The nerdy prudes needed to know that they were below him, to stay in their fucking place. So he spent most of his time between classes lurking in the halls trying to find some nerds to prey on. So far he wasn't seeing any nerds making the mistake of walking down one of his hallways, but he did see something that he liked from far away, a one Grace Chasity. Now most people would say that Grace was the nerdiest prude of them all, but that wasn't for them to decide. Max was the judge, jury, and executioner, he decides who is cool and who's not, and in his book Grace was just–where would he even begin with her? If anyone at school were to ask him it be just so simple, she's hot and repressed(and everyone knows repressed chicks are the biggest freaks), a winning combo. But if he asked himself why he liked her he could never figure it out. All the things he would tell other people were true, anyone who had eyes could see that she was like the hottest bitch in Hatchetfield. He just felt something else he couldn't place. What was it about her that just draws him in so fucking much? He didn't have much more time to ponder it though, as he realized that Grace had fallen on the floor. A few people in the hall were chuckling at her or the ground, Max would have to kick their asses later, and everyone else just seemed to pass her by. What the hell? Does no one in this school but him have any goddamn shovelry? As soon as he got close enough to her Max reached his hand out to help Grace up.

"Hey Grace! Do you need some help down there?"

Grace glanced at him as she tried her hardest to pull herself off the ground. She was very determined to get herself up, but that shit was not gonna work. By how swollen her ankle looked there was no way she could hold herself up on her feet.

"Oh I'm sure that won't be necessary! But thanks anyways for the offer!"

She started to stand up on her feet but the moment she had put pressure on her swollen ankle she let out a yelp of pain and sat back down on the ground. She didn't even have to say that she changed her mind because Max was fucking on it. He picked up all of her books off the ground and then lifted her off the ground and let her lean on his shoulder. He never thought he'd live to see this glorious fucking day. He was holding Grace Chasity's books and walking her to class!

Chapter Text

It was official. This might be one of the worst days of Grace's life. There was a boy carrying her books! And he doesn't even go to church! What were her parents going to say? They would understand that she needed help. Max was the only one willing to help her! But helping her walk did not mean that he had to carry her books! Though with one of her arms being used to lean on Max it would be harder to carry all of her books, so it was convenient to have them be carried for her. She was also lucky that she didn't have any classes that were upstairs that day. She couldn't imagining walking up stairs like this, even with Max's help. Oh criminy! How was she going to get to her other classes today? There was no way Max intended to walk her to all of her--

"So what classes do you have today?"

He was probably just trying to fill the silence, it was getting a little bit awkward.

"Well after this I have English, then Pre-Calculus, then there's lunch of course, after lunch I have Gym, then Home Economics, and finally Chemistry." It was fine to tell him her schedule, there was no way her was actually planing on doing this the whole day. Right?

"Nice only one floor! Brightsaps teaches Home Ec right?"

"Yes, why do you ask?"

Grace was starting to get worried. If he was actually planning on walking with her all day they were certainly going to get some looks. What if someone from her church saw? She didn't want anyone to think she was going around school committing sins! But he had to just be trying to make some small talk. It would be completely unreasonable, they didn't have a single class together!

"Well I kinda need to know where to pick up your assignments from."

Wait where were they even going? Grace was so distracted by all of the sins she was committing that she didn't even notice that they were walking the wrong way. She was completely lost for words so all she could do was give him a confused look.

"Oh shit you thought I was taking you to class? No, we're going to the nurse. Im not a doctor but your ankle looks pretty fucked up."

She flinched at the language used. But he was right. It seemed her ankle was only getting more swollen the further they got in the hallway. It probably was the best for her to go to the nurse. But he didn't need to get her assignments. Some ice would surely fix her right up! She would not be needing to go home

"Oh. That would make sense."

"Wait did you think I was going to walk you to all of your classes today? We can save that for another day Grace, cause currently you really gotta go home."

No no no! This book carrying scandal would not be lasting any longer than it needed to! Though it did feel alot easier to walk not carrying all that weight and walking with him felt kind of nice. It was nice of him to do this for her but she will be able to handle herself as soon as she gets some ice. She also will not be going home today. No fudging way! She is a busy woman.

"Oh I don't need to go home, infact Im feeling better already! You can give me my books back I'm sure I can walk my self the rest of the way!"

She took her arm off of his shoulder and began trying to prove she could walk.

"Grace I don't think thats--"

Grace quickly began to fall again. Max wasn't too far way, so before she knew it she was back leaning on his shoulder.

"Shit Chasity are you ok?"

Oh! He actually her last name correctly! She had to be impressed that he of all people said it right. Not even Steph said it correctly. At this point she had to belive that most people all school just thought her name was Chastity. Well it was easier to face than the alternative. But walking was not going to be possible. He may be slightly right that the day would be difficult to get through.

"Yes, Im completely okey-dokey!"

She was not and she could see him reading right through her.

"Yeah hate to break it to you but you're going home. And if the nurse says no I'm skipping and driving your ass to the doctor myself."

Why was he so stubborn? Grace needed stay in school she had to keep her streak of perfect attendance and she had to do her duties as hallmonitor. Oh golly and she almost forgot about Steph! She needed to get Steph help. There was no way that she could go home.

"No hecking way Max! I need to stay in school!"

Max wasn't budging. He looked at her seeming mildly annoyed. What did he have to be annoyed about? He wasn't on a mission to save his friend from sin. Wait a second! It finally hit Grace that Max and Steph were friends. Surely he would understand that she had to save his friend and then he'd let her stay at school.

"No this is really important that I stay!"

Grace hushed her voice trying to make sure that she didn't cause a scene.

"Stephanie is..."

It hurt Grace to let such sinful words out of her mouth so she took a deep breath before dropping the bomb.

"Steph's pregnant."

WOAH! Hold on a fucking second! Grace has to be shitting him there was no way. There wasn't a shot in hell that Steph was pregnant.

"Hold up, where the hell'd you get that info from?"

"Steph was throwing up in the bathroom and I asked her if she was pregnant and she said yes!"

Well after last night Grace might have to shoot out some prayers for if that baby was gonna be okay. Max and the boys always made sure that his birthday was the biggest party of the year. This year was especially fun because Kyle got a bunch of jäger-bombs as a pun. And Steph had alot of fun with those. So that baby was lucky that it didn't fucking die from all of that.

"Damn, so what does that have to do with you staying here?"

Grace looked at him like he had three heads. Whatever reason she had must have seemed oh so fucking obvious to her.

"I need to make sure I find the right first person to tell before I tell anyone else and I need to tell a trusted adult."

Oh. Yeah sure that checks. But she didn't need to worry about all that shit! Grace may be the best planner in all of Hatchetfield, but Max wasn't to be underestimated. He could just move some shit around and she won't have to worry about anything but her injury.

"Well you already told me so there's step one. And I have shop next period so I can just tell Mr. Houston and then voy-la! You can rest easy back at your house. And if you end up needing crutches I'm down to continuing this book carrying arrangement."

He smiled at her at her and she opened her mouth to protest but couldn't seem to find a point to argue. She had to go get some fucking rest. She may be stubborn but she had met her match. And he was objectively right! Her ankle looked like shit! He stopped as they reached the door to the nurses office.

"Wouldya look at that Grace we're already here!"

"Do I have to? I have a protest at Perky's Buds today too!"

No! Why would she do that? Perky was cool. They gave such a good discount to the football team for parties.

"Well if you rest your ankle you may have a goddamn chance but if you dont--"

"Hpmf!"

Well it seem Grace had finally waved her white flag and was going to let him help her out and get herself some rest. God she was something alright. Max could be pretty headstrong but Grace's willpower had him in awe. When she believed something she stuck to it to a tee. It's a miracle he even convinced her to let herself rest. In all of his life he had never seen someone as passionate about anything as she was with her beliefs. It really was admirable, annoying as shit sometimes, but admirable. They walked through the door and he let her and her books down on a bed.

"Well see ya round Grace!"

Grace looked annoyed that she was stuck there but shifted to a smile. Maybe she did understand that she did need help.

"Bye Max! And thank you for carry--helping me out back there. It was shockingly kind of you."

FUCK YEAH! The Jägerman was just called nice! And by Grace Chasity of all people. Today had to be the best fucking day of his life.

Notes:

chapter title is from the way I do from starship
this one was fun to write cause ac!grace can miss a bit of big picture details when she's stressed about something else (ex: not picking up that the jerries were involved in several deaths because of steph "relapsing") and max just generally tends to take things at face value (ex: the whole waylon prank) so im just living for the free dramatic irony they give me
