Desert/Water

Summary:

Going to God is an arduous and rough process, but the wounds will not matter when you fall into the hands that will erase them.

Work Text:

She is fifteen and somewhere along the uneven arc of adolescence she has gone astray. The desert feels infinite and excruciating with a night that never ends, an eternal absence of sun, and she sucks the blood from her tiny wound to satiate her abysmal thirst. It is a grotesque survival, but her heartbeat is the only judgement to which she will adhere.

“Just one more step.”

“Rest here.”

“Soon you will taste water again.”

She hangs the mantra of dreams above her head to keep her feet moving.

On her darkest days, a small star accompanies her, and she smiles back, and she rises to vanquish another brush with death.  Her lantern flickers, defying certain death again and again. She knows not where she is going but that she must continue forth. Eden beckons across a vast distance and several labyrinths to which she is irrefutably fated. She is dry, one foot in Hades and the other in limbo. She continues like the river she seeks. Soon I will taste water again. It will be clean and it will baptize me.
