Chapter Text
Ryan Rozanov-Hollander is the youngest of the Rozanov-Hollander family, and despite being the daughter of two of the biggest NHL hall of famers, she could say with confidence she was the best hockey player of the family. Her dads were old and so boring now, and not nearly as good as they used to be. But, she still loved them.
Her papa, Ilya, took her out on their monthly “daddy daughter” dates while her dad, Shane, went on his with her older sister Irina. Ilya still had his russian accent, despite living in Canada for well over 20 years now. He taught both her and Irina how to speak Russian, along with French and English, when they were little. Ilya liked to speak Russian with his daughters any chance they got, and so when they sat at Ryan's favorite pizza emporium, Sally’s, her papa started asking her about her life in Russian.
“Hockey season is almost here, are you excited, Ms. captain?” Ilya asked in his native tongue.
Despite Ryan being only a junior, she was appointed captain because of her skill and fervor for the sport. She was dedicated to it, partly because she loved the sport, but partly because she had this lingering feeling that if she did do anything wrong, she would let down her parents.
“Yeah, I think we got a lot of new girls this year… although..” she responded, also in Russian, deciding not to finish her sentence.
“Although what? what is it?” Ilya responded, quirinking an eyebrow and smirking ever so slightly.
“It's nothing, papa, just thinking.”
“Oh God. You are sooo boring. Just like your dad, ha? Irina is so quiet, I thought you were the fun one, Ry.” Ilya said, rolling his eyes playfully.
“Well,” Ryan started, fiddling with the menu in front of her, "there's this new transfer from the private school. She's a year older.. supposed to be really good. I'm excited to meet her but also kind of intimidated?” She mused, looking up at her papa again.
The waiter quickly came over to ask for their order. “Meatlovers supreme, yes?” he told the waiter-
-“and two Shirley temples. Extra cherries” Ryan chimed in.
“Ah, she knows what is good around here, I raised her right!” Ilya chipped as the waiter smiled.
“It will be out shortly” she said, turning on her heel to walk away.
“I sometimes think you purposely overdo your accent. There’s no way it's that strong after living here the majority of your life.” Ryan quipped, returning back to Russia as her papa rolled his eyes.
“Ah, and I cannot stand your stupid boring Canadian accent, dear. Russian is way more sexy, "Ilya wiggled his eyebrows.
“Ew, papa, save that stuff for dad” Ryan closed her eyes and covered her face.
“Ah, what were you saying before, dear? Something about the transfer student?” Ilya nodded to his daughter, taking a sip of his water.
“Yeah, her name is Amber.. Something.. I think her last name starts with a p? I don't know-” she was ready to ramble about her woes, but Ilya stopped her as he dramatically spit out his water.
“Ew, dad, what was that for-” she began but got cut off again.
“Amber Pike?” Ilya asked.
“Oh, yes! That's her.. How do you know her?”
“AH Pikes kid is being transferred to your school? He is so old I thought all of his kids were in college or graduated already! I must tell you dad now” he laughed, pulling out his phone.
“Do you know the pikes? Wait, im confused-”
“Hayden Pike, dear, he and Jacki are always at our house? Shane used to play with him in Montreal. He is Shane's best friend. I guess we got so busy with you guys and they were always so busy with their lives we never introduced you guys…” Ilya provided the information as the phone rang. Ryan saw the contact photo for his dad was an old one of Ilya and Shane, the contact name still being “моя любовь,” which meant “My love” in Russian.
“Hollander, you will never guess what Ryan just told me!” Ilya said, still in Russian.
Ilya put on speaker phone as shane responded.
“Ilya, no Russian right now, I can barely hear you in the first place. Irina and I are in the city!” Shane had been pretty much fluent in Russian at that point, still, sometimes it was hard for him.
“Ah, hello my sweet angel” Ilya responded, appointed to his elder daughter, Irina
“Hi, papa!” she responded
“Anyway, Ryan just told me a Pikes kid is transferring to her school and is going to join the hockey team!” Ilya laughed
“Wait, really? I thought all of Hayden's kids were out of school? Hey this is great! Hayden and I can catch up at all your hockey games, Ry!” Shane’s smile was apparent in his voice through the phone.
“No, dad, it's not great!” Ryan quipped, "I just got told that this ex pro hockey player's daughter is joining MY team! I gotta get WHOPPED, dad, WHOOPED!”
“No, sweetie, you are the captain! Plus, you're forgetting you are the daughter of two ex pro hockey players" Shane replied.
“Ah yes, I was always better than Pike anyway, you will surely win” Ilya smiled, like he was proud of himself.
“Yes, this is true! And I was always better than your Papa, so really, Amber is the one that should be scared.” Shane chuckled.
“Ah, this is not true, Ryan! Don't believe a word this man says…”
“I mean you did play for Ottawa, they used to be REALLY bad, pa..” Ryan smirked. She knew this subject riled her papa up.
“Ry, I did that for LOVE! If I never moved you would not be here, ah? Yes, we were bad, but because of me the team got so much better! And Shane played for us too? Ah we had me, Wyatt Hayes, Troy Barrett, Luca Haas, and your father! We won 5 Stanley cups before we retired, and-! Ah, you're laughing at me. This is no laughing matter, Ryan Yuna Rozanova-Hollander.”
All Ryan could do was laugh as the nice waitress delivered their pizza and drinks.
“Okay, well, Rina and I are very busy shopping right now, so ill leave that up to you guys..” Shane sarcastically interrupted the laughter.
“Ah, you are so gay, Hollander.” Ilya spat back.
“Yeah, no shit! We've been married for-” Shane sighed, “Ya lyublyu tebya, Ilya. (I love you, ilya)” Shane's smile was apparent in his voice again.
“Ya tebya tozhe lyublyu, Shane (I love you too, Shane)” Ilya smiled back.
Before Ilya hung up the phone, Ryan got in a quick, “IF YOU FIND ANYTHING CUTE FOR ME BUY IT!”
Ryan took a big bite of her meatlovers pizza before sighing in enjoyment. Her papa did the same, sinking into the booth a bit.
Ryan knew the story of her parents. Hell, she heard it a million times. They told it to any of her friends who were stupid enough to ask about it. Though, she found it cute how in love her parents still were after nearly 30 years of being together.
Ryan hoped she would find love like that one day. However, love was not on her brain at the moment. Right now, all she was thinking about was hockey and stupid Amber Pike.
