Work Text:
31st of December, new years eve, the first after Mane left Wemmbu and Egg with not even a good-bye, just an oak sign with two words;
lost cause
Those two words had haunted Wemmbu since then, he hadn’t even told Egg about it.
All Wemmbu knew was that he needed to prove Mane wrong. So he has spent the last year proving he wasn’t, that he could fight, that he wasn’t a lost cause, that he was worthy of life. If he wasn’t good at fighting, what would he be good at?
Egg was the planner and the smart one.
Minute was the guardian of the end.
Flame was the strongest.
What would Wemmbu be if he wasn’t one of the best?
Nothing.
That’s what he would be.
Not worth anything.
Now they had lost the Great Sea and Jaden was imprisoned.
They had only lost, they didn’t gain anything.
Only lost.
Wemmbu was snapped out of his thoughts by Egg landing next to him with a can of soda for himself and Wemmbu.
Though their lives weren’t the best right now, they could just watch fireworks for the new year. So here they were sitting on top of a building in Capital City at 11:55 on new years eve. “Do you think Minute and Jaden are watching the fireworks too?” Egg asked, turning his gaze from the crowd of players gathering to Wemmbu.
“I don’t know if Minute has left The End yet so he might, but Jaden probably isn’t, I doubt the LAW would let him out just for the fireworks,” Wemmbu responded, his gaze not leaving the crowd.
Distantly he wondered if anyone else was here. Flame, Spoke, Zam. Even if they have all fucked him over one way or another he still thinks they deserve to have some kind of enjoyment for new years, after it’s celebrating the fact you are still on the sever at least to see 2026. After all it would be the 3rd year this server has been up, with the server anniversary in mid to late April.
“Do you have any sunglasses?” Egg asked.
“Bro, it’s almost midnight. Why would you need sunglasses?” Wemmbu asked.
Egg was somehow able to give Wemmbu a look despite him just being a big eyeball with smaller ones on his halos.
Oh, right. Egg’s eyes were really sensitive.
“I don’t but I might have tinted glass in my e-chest.” Wemmbu said, putting down and enderchest and looking through his shulkers. He found some glass and amethyst shards but he didn’t have any wood but fortury Egg did so they were able to craft some tinted glass.
They placed it down in front of Egg.
Then immediately after the crowd started chanting;

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
There were shouts but not of fear like Wemmbu was used to, instead, ones of enjoyment. It felt good to just watch some fireworks with his best friend.
Wemmbu was too focused on the splattering colours in the sky to realise the eyes watching them from behind.
